Chapter 23
Mr Kwon had opened up to Daehyun more and more, knowing his way with words proved useful in all aspects of life for Daehyun. Even talking his way out of the Sunday Dinner at Jaehyeok’s place. Anna had given him the clear sign of what his position was, he was not to step out of status quo if he didn’t need unnecessary attention to himself. “I’d like to spend my evening with a little down time, sir. It’s been a while since I had a barbecue, would you mind if I used some of your lighterwood?”
“I’ll add some wood to smoke meat if you’re interested.” Mr Kwon opened the lad’s heart with the joy of food. The men seemed to share a taste in rich food as well as desserts, much to Mrs Kwon’s glee for her cooking being devoured. The ride back to the farm was animated by the parents fussing over Daehyun’s driving. Mrs Kwon’s shrieking and Mr Kwon’s scolding deafened Daehyun, for the drive into town he could hear a quiet yet irritating ringing sounds. The pastor greeted Daehyun with the shake of his hand as the lad entered the department store. Assisting the lad with his short shopping list, he felt at ease with the pastor who easily discussed any problems the lad had. The boy was smart though, keeping tight lipped about his life that awaits him
The sun had set behind the hills, it was almost 8pm and start began to dot the sky. Daehyun had satisfied his craving for barbecued meat as the smoky scent of coal wafted through the air. Lying atop the dewed grass, brown orbs looked to the sky in hope of understanding the world a little more. Is that what it meant to feel at home? To have this peace of mind that nothing can harm me? Someone once told him the grass was much greener on the other idea, it wasn’t true. On the other side, the stars shine brighter, the people are happier, and peace can be found. Over the past month or so, Daehyun had become part of a family, worked his part and felt more loved than ever before.
He was calm. Life was peaceful. And most of all, Daehyun felt happy.
