Calling Card

Shadows In His Heart

Hyorin was left behind as she watched Jaejoong race out and head to the two men. One of them must have heard something because he turned around just in time to block Jaejoong's attack. Hyorin stood back as she watched Jaejoong spar with both men, knowing that at this point interfering would just get in his way. The smaller of the two bodyguards pulled a gun, but Jaejoong was faster as he wrestled the man's gun away, breaking his wrist in the process. She was surprised that even though she wasn't in the fight, her body was tense and worried.

Finally, the last of the two fell and she walked towards them, taking out the plastic ties.

"They're dead don't bother, now let's get the money" He said quietly as he walked into the study.

Hyorin put the ties away and reminded herself that this was his job. Killing was normal and by the end of today she was going to have her first kill too. She followed him into the study, stopping off to the side once Jaejoong got to work on the safe. She watched him curiously as his brow furrowed in concentration and the low light from the small flashlight he held in his mouth illuminated his face. She looked around the study, spotting a family portrait of the man she was supposed to kill. In his lap he held what must have been his grandchildren and his own sons around him.

"Why does he have to die?" Hyorin asked quietly, staring at the portrait. He didn't seem like a bad man.

"I don't know" Jaejoong said after he took the flashlight from his mouth. It was the truth he didn't know, but he could guess. This was probably some sort of politician or businessman that was lobbying against letting her father's company do whatever corrupt deed they needed to get done.

"What do you mean you don't know? So what, you just kill people without asking questions?" She asked him as she slipped off her leather gloves, her hands were sweating like crazy from nerves.

"Yes" He answered simply. He heard the last tumbler fall as he unlocked the safe, pulling it open to find stacks of money neatly pilled inside.

"What if they did nothing wrong? I thought that the people we take out are people who are doing wrong things, that they're corrupt in some way, but if you don't even know..." She started, letting her unfinished thought trail off.

"It's not my business to know that stuff. If that's what they told you then that's what it is" He said simply, remembering a time when he too had asked those questions before finally learning that there were some things, one just didn't have a choice in after a while.

"But how can you do something like this? Just because they told you to? You have to know something to be able to come in here so calmly and just kill a man" Hyorin insisted, trying to find the reasoning behind this whole thing.

"I just do it because honestly, I don't really care as long as I get the money I was promised" He said coldly as he looked over the contents of the safe.

"That's not right, how can you kill someone just for money though? Don't you feel guilty? Don't you—" She began before she saw him slam his palm down on the wall cutting off the rest of her sentence.

"What is it that you want to hear Hyorin? That I'm secretly a good guy in disguise? That you're not working for people that kill for money?" Jaejoong said in a menacing voice as he went to her and looked down on her, his face only inches away.

"No matter how stupid you are in there" He began as he prodded her head with a finger, "You can't tell me that you honestly expected everything your father ordered to be noble and honest! So stop playing dumb and stop asking stupid questions and just do what you're told! You chose this because you want vengeance right? Well it's time to live with your choices just like I had to and everybody else that works for your father had to" He finished angrily as he suddenly pulled back and went back to the safe

She shut up, sensing the end of that conversation. He was right after all. She was the one that had agreed to work for them because she wanted vengeance for her mother. She looked at his back, so strong and firm and wondered what twist of fate made him end up working here. She walked over when he called her and helped him stack the money into the large black duffle bag they had brought along. Handling all that money felt dirty somehow, like it was leaving invisible stains on her hand that she couldn't see but would always feel. She closed the bag up as Jaejoong took a switchblade out from his back pocket and began to carve something into the inside of the safe door, right underneath the lock.

"When you become good enough" Jaejoong began, already anticipating her question, "You learn to leave a mark whenever you do a big job. It's like your calling card, it lets them know that you were here and that you're not afraid"

"Let's who know?" She asked as she watched him carve a rather intricate diamond with these swirls surrounding it.

"Anyone, the police, the owners, the public. It's like a challenge" He murmured as he finished it up, his voice still holding a bit of the anger from moments ago.

He hated having her judge him. She chose this life to, she didn't have the right to walk in and suddenly demand the ethics behind the job. She didn't have the right to assume he was a monster because of his job. He was good at it and that was that.

"Wouldn't that be bad? The police knowing it's you?" Hyorin asked, marveling over the finished product.

"No it's more like I'm mocking them? They know it's me, but they can't prove it because I never leave any fingerprints or physical proof behind. All they have is this and this isn't enough to put me away for anything. You'll have one too eventually" He told her with a smirk as they both stood up.

The sudden burst of light cut her off as they both turned in surprise. The man stood in the door frame, a fearful look on his face as he shakily held a gun on them.

"Who are you?! Get out of my house! I've called the cops!" He yelled as he took a flimsy step forward.

"Everything seems to going wrong tonight" Jaejoong said calmly as they both froze.

With one swift movement Jaejoong tripped Hyorin from underneath making her fall to the ground as he rushed the man, narrowly avoided a badly aimed shot.

"You should've had some target practice before you took a gun out" He hissed as he kicked the gun from his hands and twisted his arm back pulling him to where Hyorin was getting up.

"Do it" He ordered as he kicked the gun over to her and she picked it up nervously.

"Do what?" She asked quietly, knowing what he meant.

"Do what we came here to do and hurry" He snapped.

Hyorin nodded as she steadied the gun and aimed it at the man's forehead. Jaejoong straightened him up and the man shook as he raised his horror filled eyes to hers.

"Please don't! You can have all the money I have just don't kill me! I have a family that will miss me, it's not my time yet" He sobbed.

Hyorin froze. She had never before seen a grown man cry. Especially not because of her. The man in front of her sobbed and begged for his life. He was really a feeble thing she noticed, not even making Jaejoong budge. Her hands shook slightly as her eyes glanced at the portrait hanging above them. What had he done to deserve this? Surely there must be a good reason why they were told to kill him. He must have done something horrible right? But as she looked into the man's eyes she could only see a sort of innocent fear that was hard to describe. She didn't want to do this she realized as she began to lower the gun.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Jaejoong yelled angrily.

"I can't. I can't kill him" She said softly.

"This is your job! The police are on their way and we will go to jail unless you do your ing job!" He screamed, frustrated at the way things were turning out.

"Let's just leave him and run. Please, I don't want to do this" Hyorin begged.

"Damn it Hyorin don't do this! You came this far you can't all of the sudden back down!" He yelled, "Think of your mother! You've lasted this long in that god forsaken building training and you can't even kill a person?! Remember! He must have done something wrong! How are you ever going to avenge your mother like this?! When you're being nothing but a coward?!"

"Shut up!" She screamed loudly, his words echoing around in her head. She looked at Jaejoong with so much resentment she fought to aim the gun at him. Looking at the man in Jaejoong's hold, she dropped the gun and shook her head.

"Damn it!" Jaejoong yelled as he pulled a knife from his back pocket and drew it across the man's throat.

Blood gushed out as Jaejoong let go of the man and he fell to the ground dead. He looked at up at her, her eyes wide and her body frozen in place, the gun by her feet. Nothing had gone right tonight he thought as he ran for the bag and grabbed her wrist as he pulled her away. She didn't say a word as they raced out of the house, barely making it out when they heard sirens approaching. They ran faster as they neared his car. He unlocked his car, threw the money bag in and they both got in as he backed up and raced away from the house.

"Pull over" Hyorin murmured half way through.

"Why ? We're almost back" He said as he kept driving.

"Just pull over damn it!" She screamed suddenly.

He pulled over, surprised at her tone as she wrenched the door open and stumbled out to the side of the highway. It was in the middle of the night and no cars drove by as he watched her suddenly bend over and throw up. Her whole body shook as she threw up over and over again until it was nothing but dry heaves. He watched her until her finally stepped out from the car and walked over to her. Standing over her, he watched as she quietly cried. Something about that reminded him of the first time he had killed someone, without really thinking about it his hand reached out to her in an attempt to comfort her, though he really had no clue how.

He felt her freeze under his touch.

"Please don't. Don't touch me" She whispered as she looked up at him and shook his hand away, as if the very thought of him touching her disgusted her to the very core.

He said nothing as he turned and walked back to the car, settling into the driver's seat once again. He heard as she got back in the car and shut the door. He slowly pulled away not daring to look at her. Jaejoong scolded himself for even going to her. His body burned in humiliation and anger. Why had she pushed him away, was it his fault she had chosen this life? Who was she to treat him like that? She was just a dumb fool who knew nothing about what was actually going on.

They finally got back to the hell they both called home and he walked past her angrily to deliver the money.

"Jaejoong..." She began unsure of what to say. Was he angry at her?

"Hurry up" He snapped, his eyes blazing with anger.

"I'm sorry" Hyorin started, finally getting the courage to really look into those angry eyes of his, "I may have jeopardized the mission, but tell that man that I'll come along and I'll help you steal, but I won't kill anyone"

Jaejoong looked her over once and turned around without another word only getting angrier and angrier as he walked away. He asked himself why he had felt disappointed when her apology hadn't had anything to do with when she pushed him away. He stopped suddenly and struck his fist into the wall. She had hurt his ing feelings he realized with an air of disgust.
