Humble Beginnings

Back At Your Door

IMPORTANT: I kinda messed up the timeline here since everytime I update I rewrite the chapter a lot. (insecure author here haha) So if you all backtrack and connect this story in real time, it would be something like this:

1st - Introduction/First day of classes (Monday)
2nd - Jessica asks for Yuri's number (Tuesday)
3rd - YulSic goes to see the sunset (Wednesday)
4th - Yuri tells Jessica that he likes her + Walk-in session with Dr. Kim (Thursday)
5th - Yuri gives out the invitation to their party + YulSic eats unch together + TaeRi and TaecSica meets at the Cafe (Friday)
6th - Yuri gives a origami flowers to Jessica + half of this chapter (Saturday)

Technically, it's supposedly Saturday in real time however this is a Fanfic, I want you guys to pretend that it isn't! So pretend!!! (It doesn't really affect the story but I just want to give a heads up to those who are keen to details haha)

Chapter 11

--

Author’s POV

Class 3A’s morning classes went by in a flash and soon enough it was time for their break. Everybody was packing up their things and was headed for the door. As for Yuri, he did not move from his seat. He had one hand under his chin while his other one was lightly tapping his desk.

“Yuri, aren’t you gonna leave?” Taeyeon looked over to her friend who had his eyes fixated on the window.

The boy only shook his head and nothing more. Taeyeon sensed that her friend was in a rather serious mood. She knew better than to ask Yuri so she shrugged and looked over to Kris and the others.

“How about you guys?” She asked the other three who were already standing with their bags with them.

Taecyeon saw this as an opportunity to spend time with Jessica so he quickly grabbed it.

“Let’s all go the canteen then!” Taecyeon said with a grin.

Kris nodded in response while Jessica gave a hesitant smile. She left the paper bag Yuri gave her on her seat since they were going to use the same room anyway for their next class.

Confirming everyone’s answer, the four of them headed for the door. Jessica was the last one to leave. Before she stepped out of the classroom, she took a glance at Yuri. She was worried but then she couldn’t really bring herself to ask the boy what was on his mind so she reluctantly left and caught up with the others.

Yuri’s POV

Ok Taecyeon.

Ok Taecyeon.

Ok…

Of course.

I took out my phone and dialed in a number.

*Ring Ring*

“Good afternoon, Mr. Kwon. What can I do for you today?” The other person on the line answered swiftly

“Could you please check the guest list for the party on Saturday for me?”

“Of course sir. I have it now. Do you have a name on mind, sir?”

“Yes. His name is Ok Taesong.”

I heard typing noises and after a few seconds, the person on the other line spoke again.

“I found him, sir. According to our list, he’ll be accompanied by his nephew. Ok Taecyeon.

I guess I don’t need to invite him after all.

“I see. That would be all. Thank you.” I hanged up and kept my phone back in my pocket.

I should’ve known. Ok’s not really a common last name. He’s the nephew of Ok Taesong of EDX incorporated. It’s the top textile company in Korea as of the moment. I got too caught up with Jessica that I even missed such an obvious detail.

I wonder if he’s aware that it’s my family’s party. No wait. Probably, not. If he did then he would’ve asked me about it. Everything just keeps on getting interesting. I’m sure Taecyeon would stick close to Jessica once he sees her at the party. I did plan out a couple of things for Jessica on that night however I don’t want to put her in a difficult position of choosing between me and Taecyeon. At least not yet. There’ll come a time where she needs to make such a decision but for now, I’ll just let things happen naturally.

Whatever happens, happens.

--

Author’s POV

Yuri continued not to utter a word to anyone during that day. He only spoke when teachers asked him to do so and if it was absolute necessary. Taeyeon wasn’t new to this. There were times in the past where in Yuri wouldn’t say anything for long periods of time. She found it weird at first but then she learned to not be bothered by it anymore.

Jessica, on the other hand, was slightly worried. After their class, Yuri left without saying a word to anyone. Not even Taeyeon. Jessica found his expression very different from his usual ones. It was as if, Yuri was pondering over something and very deeply at that. Curiosity was getting to her but she couldn’t really bring herself to ask.

“What’s that?” Kris asked pointing to the paper bag Jessica had in her hand.

“Oh this… uhm it’s from Yuri.” Jessica said hesitantly as her eyes met Taecyeon who also was curious.

Kris nodded while Taecyeon’s face stiffened.

Even when he doesn’t talk to her, he’s still gets past me! I need a new game plan!

Kris, Taecyeon, Taeyeon and Jessica all went on their way. Taeyeon and Taecyeon went the same way however they separated somewhere in the middle since the latter’s house was nearer than the former. The two cousins arrived at their humble abode and as soon as they entered, Kris couldn’t help but ask Jessica about her stand on Yuri and Taecyeon.

“Taecyeon seemed really pissed when you mentioned that it was from Yuri.” Kris then went ahead and grabbed something from their fridge. Seconds afte, he came back with a bottle in hand

“If you hadn’t asked then I wouldn’t have had to say it.” Jessica pouted as she remembered what had just happened moments ago.

Jessica was conflicted. Two guys have been tugging on her heart and she doesn’t know what to do. Even if she tells herself to stay away, she can’t resist each of their company. They both made a good impression on her and now more than ever she was confused as to what she really wants. She was only days into her new school and everything has gone topsy-turvy. What more can happen, she thought.

“I was just curious! Plus, I’m pretty sure Taecyeon would’ve asked anyway.”

“I feel bad now and I don’t even know why.”  Jessica plopped herself on their couch and stared at the ceiling

“Jess, it’s not your fault that they both like you. Just go with what you feel and don’t mind the others.”

The problem lies within Jessica’s indecisiveness. She knows where these kinds of things led to and that very thought scares her however she’s not capable of stopping herself.

“I feel….hungry.” Jessica joked

Kris smiled and went back to the kitchen to cook their dinner.

--

Yuri remained silent until the next day. He did not leave their classroom during breaks. With this going along, Taecyeon took every chance he could get to get close to Jessica. He joined Taeyeon’s group during their breaks and he'd sit beside Jessica. He even tried to ask her out at one point.

“Hmm. Tomorrow’s Friday! We got through one week of school already.” Taecyeon turned to Jessica. Everyone was having their own conversation and so he took this time to strike up one of his own with the latter.

“Yeah and you haven’t been late ever since that day. Good job!” Jessica teased.

“I’m just keeping my promise.” Taecyeon grinned

Jessica let out a small laugh. She found Taecyeon’s wide grins amusing. There was a moment of silence before Taecyeon spoke.

“So…” Taecyeon trailed.

“Hmm?” Jessica looked at him with anticipation

“It’s Friday tomorrow…. I was wondering if you have time to spare?. After class!”

Hearing the word Friday made Jessica remember her deal with Yuri. She didn’t really forget about it, in fact she’d been thinking about it a lot. It was just, at that moment, she was caught off guard.

“I’m going out with a friend tomorrow to well… shop for clothes.” Jessica politely declined Taecyeon’s impending offer

Taecyeon was slightly disappointed but he concluded that whoever that friend is, was probably a girl. Shopping was involved after all.

“Ohhh. Okay. Maybe next time then.” Taecyeon played it cool and gave her a reassuring smile.

Jessica only smiled in response. She hasn’t really come to terms with what exactly she was trying to do. Not getting attached to someone was her goal but evidently she was steering away from that. Over the course of two days she was slowly getting used to Taecyeon’s company. They often had fun and light conversations. Jessica no longer had the grasp of her feelings anymore. At one hand, she felt worried about Yuri but then on the other hand, she was enjoying Taecyeon’s company and on top of these two conflicting feelings was her compelling instinct to just stay away from these two persons who have been causing the reawakening of those feelings she had buried deep inside of her.

Flashback Summer Last year + Last year’s opening of classes at Daewon)

Jessica and Kris had just moved to Korea from California. Both were capable of speaking the language somewhat  well so communication wasn’t really a problem. The only struggle they had was getting used to the culture of Korea. There were a lot of things they didn’t quite understand. Like how you’re supposed to address someone who’s only 1 year older than you, formally. As complicated it was, both worked hard to understand and make sure they didn’t do anything disrespectful to anyone. Kris’ parents did not come with him in his move to Korea. Due to certain circumstances, his parents had to delay their move and instead send their son earlier than them. Jessica, on the other hand, moved with her parents but her little sister was left behind because she was already committed into finishing her studies there, at least until she graduates from middle school. Krystal, her sister, will continue her education in Korea afterwards. Being the eldest, Jessica didn’t really protest against their move. She was sad to leave the friends she had made during her years of stay and schooling in California but she was not the type to go against her parents and so she quietly followed. The only reason her little sister couldn’t leave with them was because she was part of an arts program in her school. When she completes it, it would help her get into an Arts high school in Korea.

Jessica and Kris were admitted to Daewon High School. It was one of the most prestigious schools in Korea. Their first day of classes went smoothly. The two cousins, caught the attention of their classmates as soon as they walked inside their room. Everyone just immediately gawked at them. Who wouldn’t? They were both very much attractive. Kris was tall, he had fair skin and he had strong eyes. Jessica, though small in terms of height, she too had fair skin and she emitted a sense of warmth around her.

Their homeroom teacher introduced both of them. The two then sat down at the free seats at the back. When their break came, the pair were immediately asked by various groups of people to join them during their break. For the next couple of days, Jessica and Kris spent their free time with a girl named Tiffany and her friends. This girl happened to be the first one to approach them on their very first day and they found her bubbly personality very interesting too.

“I know we just met and all but I’d like to invite you guys to this annual party my clan holds.” Tiffany handed them both invitations with an insignia on top of it.

Jessica and Kris both looked at the invitation with much interest. They couldn’t help it, the invitation itself was unlike any other.

“It’s happening this weekend. Are you guys free?” Tiffany asked with such anticipation

Jessica eyes turned sour while Kris waited for his cousin to answer. He didn’t mind going but he definitely didn’t want to go alone.

“I’m really sorry Tiffany but I sort of have plans this weekend.” Jessica declined with much effort. She felt bad that she couldn’t go because the former was nothing but nice to them.

Hearing his cousin’s answer, Kris had to think fast.

“Me too. I’m looking into joining a weekend soccer club. Sorry, Tiffany.” Kris said with apologetic eyes.

Tiffany could only sigh but she didn’t take it against them. It was on short notice anyway.

“It’s fine guys but keep the invitations! Just in case!”

The pair nodded and kept their invitations in their respective bags. The reason why Jessica couldn’t make it was because she signed up for a vocal workshop and their first meeting was scheduled to be on that weekend. It was sort of an orientation but their actual classes will be held regularly after her classes.

Jessica too wanted to get into an Arts high school before in California but the thing she lacked the most was confidence. This girl could sing but she felt as though she wasn’t good enough. Her plan was to hone her skills first then she’ll try her luck here in Korea to get into an Arts College after high school. It’s never too late, she thought. That’s why she signed up for this particular vocal workshop which was near their home. She had researched about the place too and it had good reviews on the interwebs.

Days passed and that fateful weekend came to Jessica. She felt nervous because she hasn’t had the chance to sing in front of anyone. Jessica’s singing was confined to the four walls of her room and her bathroom.

She landed in front of a white building. The only thing standing in her way was a glass door.

I can do this. This is what I want. Don’t turn around Jessica. You can do this!

Jessica was silently cheering herself on. With a strong mindset, she entered the building. She got directions from the receptionist on where the studio was located at. She took the lift up to the 5th floor and got out. Jessica walked at the end of the hallway until she reached the distinct blue door the woman at the front desk had told her about.

She gave it a knock and slowly opened the door. A piano melody greeted her ears. It came from the middle of the room. A man was playing a somewhat sad melody. It gave off a delicate sense of beauty. Jessica entered the room and gently closed the door behind her.  There, Jessica stood, just watching this man play out his heart.

(Listen to me!/Click me!)

Each key pressed elevated the piece towards perfection. The flow of the notes were smooth as silk. You can feel the power in each note. If that wasn’t beauty itself then Jessica didn’t know what was.

The man stopped playing and turned his head sideways, towards the direction of Jessica. He was surprised to see her, especially at this time. No one was supposed to be there.

“Hi there. Can I help you?” The man spoke in such a gentle tone that made Jessica’s heart skip a beat.

Could he be the instructor then...?

“Uhm. I signed up for a vocal workshop. The woman at the front desk told me this where it should be but I guess I got the wrong door… No one’s here….” Jessica’s eyes couldn’t help but observe this man’s facial features.

He had milky white skin and light brown eyes. His nose was perfect, Jessica thought. Not to mention, this man’s smile was indeed captivating.

“Ohhh. No. You’re in the right place! You just came a little bit early, that’s all. The other students will be arrive in a few and also my brother!” the man enthusiastically said.

Jessica put on a confused look.

“My brother owns the place. He’s the instructor here. I on the other hand teach music. My brother takes charge of the singing lessons.”

Jessica then nodded. She looked around the studio. The piano was in the middle of the room while the other instruments, such as the guitars were hanged up on the wall. There was a door on the right which led to the recording studio. There were also chairs at the side and a big white board.

“So, did you like the piece I played?” the man with milky skin stood and approached Jessica.

“It was very beautiful. Was that an improvisation?” Jessica answered with a smile. You could definitely hear her admiration towards the man or well the piece the man played.

“It was, actually…” he let out a wide smile before continuing his sentence.

..

..

..

“….I’m Daniel. And to whom do I owe the pleasure of hearing that wonderful compliment?”

Jessica blushed at the way Daniel spoke. She extended her hand and replied.

“I’m Jessica.” She said with a smile

Daniel shook her hand and took his time with it.

“That’s a wonderful name.” Daniel still had her hand in his. He gave her another smile to which Jessica’s heart responded with a few skipped beats.

Unknown to Jessica at that time, that man would play a very crucial role in her life. Only time will tell the humble beginnings of her downfall.

End of Flashback

--

Yuri’s POV (Present day/Fast forward to Friday)

It’s Friday today. I’ve been waiting for this day to come ever since Jessica told me her little condition. I’ve actually arranged something for her. I’m not really sure how she would take it but whatever. It doesn’t really matter to me what she chooses to wear. I’m only after her time which Taecyeon has been fully taking advantage of since the other day. I haven’t said a word to anyone, including Jessica, after Ms. Hwang’s announcement of groupings for the sky lantern making project. There wasn’t any special reason. I just really wanted to see what Taecyeon would do if I backed up a bit. Pure curiosity, that’s all. It wasn’t surprising anyhow. He was all over Jessica. Whether it be during breaks or during transition periods (that short time when we switch teachers). I found his antics very amusing and well Jessica seemed to enjoy them as well. There were a few times where Jessica would give me sneaky glances.

I pretended not to notice any of them though. Again, I was just curious as to what would happen if I ignored her for a bit. From what I’ve observed she’d have this disappointed look in her eyes when she looks away from me.

There was still a couple of minutes before my last class ends. While our teacher had his back on us, I took out my phone and sneaked a text to Jessica.

To: Uncoordinated Jung

Text me when you get home. I’ll pick you up, okay? I just need to drop by somewhere first.

I’m assuming she hasn’t forgotten our little deal. Well, I’m hoping she hasn’t.

I looked at her. She took out her phone from the front pocket of her blazer. It took her a few seconds to read it. She couldn’t really type out her reply because our teacher suddenly turned around. Instead she put her left hand behind her and showed me a thumbs up.

She remembers after all.

Our bell rang, signaling the end of class. Everyone did what they had to do and left the classroom. As for me, I packed up my things and made my way out just like everyone else. I didn’t bother saying goodbye to Taeyeon and the others. I’d see them tomorrow at the party anyway.

It didn’t take long for me to reach my apartment. I put away my things and plopped down my couch. I took out my phone and made a call.

*Ring Ring*

“Good Afternoon, Mr. Kwon. How may I help you?”

“I need to borrow a car. Could you send someone to bring it to my apartment?”

“Certainly, sir. Are you going somewhere? I could arrange one our chauffeurs to take you.”

“No. It’s fine. I can get by, by myself. Oh and please don’t overdo it. Nothing flashy please. I don’t want to attract any attention.”

“I’ll look into it, sir. It’ll be there in a few. Would that be all?”

“Yes please. Thank you.”

I hanged up and placed my phone on my coffee table. This person, I’ve been calling is my father’s assistant. I talk to him more than I talk to my own father. Most of the calls I made in the past were just to check in about the events my family holds. I’ve never really asked for more than that, unlike now. I just called him to get a car for me which I haven’t done before however this is a perfect opportunity for me to use my license. I got it last summer and well needless to say I haven’t really gotten the full feeling of having a driver’s license.

I sighed and closed my eyes for a bit. I let out a yawn and shot my eyes back open. I’ve been waiting for this day, I can’t afford to feel sleepy now. I got up from my position and went ahead to take a shower. Afterwards, I changed into more comfortable clothes. I threw on a white shirt and jeans on. I went out again to my living room to check my phone.

From: Uncoordinated Jung

I’m home now! Text me whenever! :)

..

..

..

To: Uncoordinated Jung

I’ll be there in half an hour or so.

I hit the send button and shoved my phone in my pocket. I figured it would take that long for the car to get here. I’m not really in a rush anyway. I continued drying my hair with the towel I had in my hand and sat myself down on my couch once again.

*Ring Ring*

“Yes?” I said as I picked it up

“The car you’ve requested for is on its way, sir. I must apologize in advance if you ever find the car too flashy. It’s the simplest we have at the moment.”

“It’s fine. You did what you could anyway. Is that all?”

“Yes sir.”

“Alright then. Thank you again.” I hanged up and returned my phone to its place in my pocket.

Whatever car they sent will have to do. I just hope it doesn’t make Jessica feel uncomfortable. Well, if she does then I guess I’ll ditch the car somewhere or whatever. Geez, the trouble I’m willing to go for this girl is just amazing, really.

--

Author’s POV

About 20 minutes after that call, Yuri’s phone received a text message, saying that the car was now in front of his apartment complex.

Yuri quickly went down and out. A white sedan greeted him. It was a 2014 BMW 320i  xdrive. A man in his late 30s, went up to Yuri and bowed before handing him the keys and briskly walking away and entering the convoy car. Seconds after, it drove away, leaving Yuri and the car behind.

“Could have been simpler.” He muttered under his breath before entering the car and driving to Jessica’s apartment complex.

The drive was short indeed. It was, after all, a few blocks away from his home. When he arrived, he got out of the car and called Jessica.

*ring ring*

*ring ring*

“Hello?” Jessica answered.

“Go outside.” Yuri said and immediately hanged up after.

About 2 minutes after Yuri’s call, Jessica went down and saw Yuri leaning against a car. She didn’t expect this at all.

“Hey there.” Jessica greeted. Like Yuri, she donned a simple black shirt with a shark print on and jeans.

Yuri went to the other side of the car and opened the door for her. He said nothing, instead he gestured for her to get in. Jessica complied and got in the car. Once she was inside, Yuri closed the door gently and went on to the driver side.

“Do you trust me?” Yuri looked over to Jessica. She had her hands clasped together on her lap.

“H-huh?” Jessica turned a bit to look at Yuri. Hearing that word made Jessica flinch.

“Well whether you want to or not, you’ll have to because this’ll be my first time to drive ever since I got my license.” Yuri broke into a smile

Seeing the boy smile, Jessica let out a small laugh.

“I don’t really have a choice, do I?”

Instead of continuing their playful banter. Yuri leaned towards Jessica, making their faces just inches away from each other. Her breathing stopped, her eyes widened and finally Jessica’s heart fastened its beating.

Yuri kept his gaze on Jessica as he reached for something behind her seat. When he got the hold of it, Yuri stayed there for a couple of seconds. He was momentarily paralyzed by Jessica’s fragrance. It was strawberry-like, he thought. When Yuri got back to reality, he slowly backed away from Jessica. He extended the seat belt along with him and snapped it into place.

“You smell really nice.” These words escaped Yuri’s mouth without much thought.

Jessica was still a bit stunned but she was able to thank Yuri for the compliment. Drawing his seat belt too, everything was now ready. Seconds after, they drove off into the distance.

--

Jessica’s POV

We drove downtown. Tall shopping complex buildings surrounded us. I’ve been here in the past with Tiffany but we weren’t really able to explore all the shops. There wasn’t really much traffic going on. I looked over to Yuri, he had his eyes focused on the road. My eyes found themselves observing his facial features. His side profile was just as amazing as his whole face, really. That face plus that mysterious vibe he has is such a perfect combination. It’s no surprise that girls are after him. I mean who wouldn’t right?

..

..

..

Would I?

“Staring at me again, huh?” Yuri said. It snapped me out my trance. I felt the embarrassment rise up to my cheeks again.

“S-sorry!” I said as I quickly turned my head.

“I like it though. When you look at me like that, I mean.” Yuri said as he stopped the car and turned off the engine.

I froze. His way with words just gets to me all the time, making me feel all gushy inside. And the fact that his voice is just perfect, isn’t helping me to calm down my already thumping heart.

He got out of the car and went to my side. I took off the seat belt as he opened my door. I got out with much ease and when I did he closed the door.

Yuri and I stopped in front of this absolutely beautiful store. Voltaire was its name. This isn’t just your ordinary store, Voltaire is one of the most renowned brands in the whole world. Come to think of it, the owner of Voltaire is…

“Wait, are you related to Im Sang Ah?!” I exclaimed. Flashing images of THE Im Sang Ah filled my head. She shared the same slightly dark-skin that Yuri has plus they have the same eyes too! Those Jet black orbs of perfection…

Yuri smiled.

“I’ll explain things later. Let’s go in first.”

He then again opened the door for me and when we entered, the store had this fragrant smell. It was a mix of decadent vanilla and fresh flowers. The store itself was wonderful and even more so the collection of clothing they had displayed.

“Oh my. Good Afternoon, Mr. Kwon! It’s nice to see you.” A stunning woman approached us. Gosh, everything about this store is just out of this world! Even its staffs!

“My friend here needs an outfit for tomorrow’s party. It’d be great if you can help her choose.” Yuri gestured his hand towards me

“Ahh yes, of course! Please, do wait here.” The woman left and went through a door that probably leads to their office.

Me and Yuri sat on the couch that was at the side. Once we were settled, I couldn’t help but press him on for questions.

“Answer my question! Are you related to THE Im Sang Ah?”

“She’s my mother’s sister.” Yuri said as if it was nothing.

My jaw dropped. This guy is so full of surprises. I’m sitting next to Im Sang Ah’s nephew. Oh my Gosh. Well, I should’ve expected this. Though, Tiffany has never mentioned Yuri to me before, she has let on a few stories about their clan. The Kwon clan is part of Korea’s elite society. Tiffany doesn’t carry the famous surname however she still has that blood running through her. From fashion elites to business tycoons, this clan had it all.

“By the way, I’ll be paying for whatever you end up choosing today. Don’t try to talk me out of it because it won’t work.”

“Do you already have something to wear for tomorrow?” I won’t back down this easily. Is he crazy? I’m not gonna let him do this without me repaying him.

“As of the moment, no but I’m pretty sure my aunt will send something tomorrow. She takes care of everything I wear to events like these.”

“Okay. How about we pick out  something for you! I’ll pay for it! I can’t just let you do this for me. I appreciate it though but still!”

“You don’t have to buy anything for me. Although you could give me something if you really want to make things even between us which by the way there’s no absolute need to.”

“Which is?”

“Your time.”
