Chapter 12: ManYul’s Brother

chocolate CHIP COOKie

The morning after Taeyeon’s birthday…

“Tiffany-ah~…” Yuri called out. She was waking up her roommate.

There was no response.

“Tiffany, wake up.” Tiffany didn’t budge.

“Fany-yah, wake up!!” she shouted. Her patience is as long as Dell Inspiron 14R’s battery life and I’m telling you now that it’s not that long.

“FANY, WAAAAKKKEEEE UP!! I’LL CALL SHINYOUNG TO COME HERE AND FART ON YOUR FACE IF YOU DON’T WAKE UP RIGHT NOW!” She said it all in one breath. She remembered the story Shinyoung told them when Taeyeon was in grade school and didn’t want to wake up to go to school.

“What do you want from me~” Tiffany said groggily.

“Wake up, now! Breakfast is ready. Everyone’s waiting for you, your highness!”

Tiffany refused to stand up. She was still too sleepy for it was only 8 in the morning but she recalled Yuri’s threat. Who would want to wake up due to an earth-shaking fart coming from Shinyoung?

“Alright, I’m up!” she stood up but toppled when she stepped on the blanket. Yuri was standing a foot away from her but just stood there when she fell down and collided with the floor.

She sat up and felt a little sting from the fall. She scrunched up her face when she saw the other girl looking at her. Yuri’s still standing there, unconcerned about the whole thing.

“Thanks!” Tiffany exclaimed sarcastically.

“Did you want me to catch you?” Yuri asked with the intention of ticking Tiffany off.

“Yeah, that would’ve been nice. Normal people would’ve done that. Apparently you’re not normal. Either that or your reflex is a little messed up,” Tiffany answered back.

“You should’ve yelled ‘Help’ or ‘Mayday, Mayday’ or something.” Yuri shrugged and offered a hand to Tiffany but the latter swatted her hand away.

“No, thanks. I fell on the floor by myself. I think I could manage getting up with no help from you.”

“Sure. Go ahead and be rude,” Yuri said as she started walking away.

Yuri was almost out of the room when she heard Tiffany spoke.

“Remember this Kwon Yul, I won’t catch you either when you fall!!”

“Don’t call me Yul,” Yuri shot her a glare.

Tiffany walked towards her and said, “MAN.YUL.” She shoved past Yuri and hastily went downstairs.

---

“Why do we have to wait for Tiffany?” Hyoyeon said while rubbing her tummy. She was hungry and she wanted to devour the food.

“Because that’s what friends do, they wait for their friends to arrive and then eat,” Sooyoung said crossing her arms.

Hyoyeon scoffed, “You’re the one to talk. You go to our house all the time and eat whatever my mom cooked and you don’t even wait for me before you start eating.”

“Whatever, you look like a dude.” They heard Tiffany shout as she entered the dining room. She sat at the right side of her sister.

Everyone sighed and dug in. They finally get to eat.

---

When all of them were finished with whatever they have to do before going to their first class, they all headed to their classroom. Their first class for the day is Hangul and they’re all in the same class.

Yuri, Sooyoung, Hyoyeon and Sunny sat at the back while Jessica, Yoona, Taeyeon and Seohyun sat in the front row.

“Jessie, let’s sit in the last row. This isn’t my favourite subject and I don’t want to be noticed by the professor. If I sit here, I WILL get noticed and the professor might call me all the time and there’s this big chance that I wouldn’t know the answer…” she continued her rant while Jessica was spacing out.

Jessica finally returned from dreamland and shook her head, “What were you saying, Tiff?”

Tiffany hit her sister in the back of her head and sat in the last row.

“Good morning,” greeted the young man sitting on her left.

She smiled at him and said, “Good morning. I’m Hwang Tiffany.”

“Ok Taecyeon. Nice to meet you, Tiffany,” he smiled showing off his perfect set of teeth.

Tiffany couldn’t help but smile wider when she recalled last night’s event. So he was my zombie. Whoa, his ears.

Wow, where’d her eyes go? She’s pretty. Another victim of Tiffany Hwang’s eye smile.

“Nice to meet you, too,” Tiffany said. She wanted to wash away the guilt of what she did last night so she talked to Taecyeon a little longer.

Compared to other classes, this particular class had more students.

Their class went well because their professor, Shin Bong Sun, was not boring. She was quite funny and the Korean students laughed at everything she said. The foreign kids were having a little difficulty understanding her which is totally understandable.

The bell rang and everyone went to their next class. The roommates were separated again since their next class is a major subject. Sooyoung and Tiffany are in the same class, same goes for Taeyeon and Yuri.

---

After her last class, Tiffany sent a message to Sooyoung saying that they’d use her car to go to a hair salon nearby. She hasn’t made up her mind yet on what hairstyle to get. She’s done heaps of stuff with her hair. She’s already colored it blonde before. She’s cut it real short and looked like a very cute boy, much like Sooyoung’s hairstyle now. She’s even tried to have full bangs.

On the other side of campus, Sooyoung hastened her pace in order to not get caught skipping classes by her roommate Seohyun, who was also her classmate on the class that she’s ditching. She reached their house in a matter of minutes and saw Tiffany leaning on her car.

“Hey, Soo,” Tiffany greeted.

“Hi, Fany-ah. Let’s get going,” she said. She was still hoping that Tiffany would be done before her last class start. It was a major subject so she didn’t really want to miss it but since Tiffany asked her to come, how could she refuse? Would you refuse to spend a few hours with Tiffany Hwang? I don’t think so. If you said yes, you’re a hypocrite and I have to give you a good whack on the side of your head.

Tiffany nodded and they both got in the car. They drove off to their destination and got there after driving for thirty minutes.

“Soo, I need your help,” said Tiffany while looking at herself in the mirror.

“Help on what?” Sooyoung answered.

“I don’t know which hairstyle I want. What do you think suits me?”

Sooyoung stared at her for a whole minute before answering. “Shoulder length would suit you, I think. It’ll make you look younger. A short hair like mine would probably work, too and ask the stylist to give you a side bangs.”

Tiffany nodded and thought about what Sooyoung said. “Are you saying I look old?”

“What? No, no,” Sooyoung started waving her hands frantically, “I didn’t mean it like that. You would look even younger if your hair is short. Not that you look old, you actually look perfect, it--”

“I get it, I get it,” Tiffany cut her off. “You’re praising me too much,” she smiled at Sooyoung which immediately calmed the latter down.

“I can’t get a haircut like yours, though. Manyul would tease me about it.”

“Manyul?” Sooyoung asked.

“Yuri. She’d look like a guy if her hair were shaved off,” she chuckled. “A very hot guy,” she added.

Sooyoung laughed with her, “Yeah she has that manly look.”

“I know, right? And she’s telling me I’d look good if I go bald. Psh. Total non-sense.”

Tiffany told the hairstylist to cut her hair up to her shoulders. Sooyoung sat on one of the couches and stared at Tiffany. She wasn’t being a creeper. She actually has a valid reason to stare at her. What if the talkative hairstylist accidentally cut her ear off, right?

---

“Hyuk Joon oppa, right here,” Yuri waved at her brother. They agreed to meet up in a café near the campus.

Her brother sat on the opposite side, facing her. He took off his shades and cap. “Look, I shaved my hair off. I look good, right?” he smiled.

“Aish, oppa!” She recalled Tiffany teasing her about looking like a guy. Now that her brother had shaved all of his hair off, Tiffany has one more reason to . Tiffany hasn’t seen her brother yet but what if she does? She’ll call her ‘Manyul’ again.

“Why? What’s wrong? Dad said it looks good.”

“Nothing. Let’s just order, I’m starving. You’re late by the way,” she glared at her brother.

“It’s my treat so I have the right to be late and you’re my sister for crying out loud.”

The siblings ordered their snacks and talked about how Yuri’s adjusting to her life as a college student. They talked about trivial things while eating.

After a whole hour of talking, teasing, eating, occasional throwing of tissue papers, Yuri playfully punching her brother and Hyuk Joon hitting the side of her head, the two decided to go out of the café and walk along the streets of Apgujeong.

Yuri saw a pretty dress on the window of some boutique. She asked her brother to come inside with her but he refused saying that he’s not going inside a boutique for girls.

“Fine, stay here,” Yuri said and entered the shop.

---

“How's my hair?Do I look younger now?” Tiffany asked Sooyoung who just woke up. She fell asleep on the couch while waiting for Tiffany.

Only one word came out of Sooyoung’s mouth. “Breathtaking” She was. Sooyoung noticed something different about Tiffany besides her hair. “Did you put make-up on? Eyeliner perhaps?”

“Yeah. You were sleeping and I didn’t want to wake you up. You looked so serene so I decided to sort of experiment a little on what make-up would suit my new look. So do you want to go home already or do you want to eat first?”

As much as Sooyoung wanted to say ‘Yes’, she couldn’t. She could still attend her last class. “I can’t. You see I have one more class to attend to,” she said truthfully.

“But you said…”

“I lied,” she grinned like a little kid.

Tiffany shook her head and chuckled, “As much as I’d like to say that what you did was somewhat sweet, I can’t because truthfully, it’s idiotic. I could’ve asked someone else to come with me. I can’t ask Yuri because she’s mad at me for calling her ‘manyul’ but I could’ve asked Jessica.”

“It’s fine, really. The class I skipped was a minor one. I could just ask Sohyun what they discussed but I’m pretty sure it’s all about the rules in the class and whatnot.”

“Give me your schedule once we get home.” She walked towards her car but stopped when she saw someone across the street, “Oh.My.God. Yuri shaved her head!” She pointed towards the guy who was playing with his cap.

Tiffany crossed the street and Soooyoung followed. They approached him and at the same time Yuri got out of the shop carrying a paper bag.

“Whoa. Yul, you have a twin brother? Cool.” Tiffany smiled at Hyuk Joon, “Hi. I’m Tiffany Hwang.”

“Hi. Nice to meet you and we’re not twins. We just really look a lot like each other. Lucky her, right?” Yuri’s brother greeted back.

“I see you didn’t go for my suggestion of going bald,” she said when she noticed Tiffany’s new hairstyle. It suits her. She looks prettier and what’s up with the puppy eyes. Whatever, her make-up suits her, too. I’m praising this geek too much. Good thing I’m only thinking about it. I don’t want to give this geek an ego boost.

Tiffany faked a smile, “I don’t think it’ll look good on me but seeing your brother here,” she looked at Yuri’s brother and grinned, “It looks like being bald suits you, Yul.”

Goddammit, I was right!

Hyun Jook laughed at what Tiffany said, “That’s funny, my friends and some of her friends call her Yul, too…”

“Because she kinda looks like a guy.”

Tiffany and Hyun Jook said in unison.

“I hate you both,” Yuri muttered while glaring at the two.

“Uh…guys, I have to go, I’m going to be late for class. It was nice meeting you, Hyun Jook oppa. I’m Sooyoung by the way.”

“Hi.” Yuri’s brother smiled at Sooyoung. Tiffany couldn’t help but notice the similarity in the siblings’ smile.

“You two even have the same smile. That is so cool,” she giggled again.

This geek is getting on my nerves.

“I think we have to go home, too. See you next time, oppa.” She waved goodbye and pulled the giggling Tiffany with her.

“Alright,” her brother answered.

Yuri saw Tiffany’s car and said, “Great. I’ll be taking a cab back to the campus then.”

“No, no. I’ll take a cab. You two could go home now,” Sooyoung said and hailed a cab.

“Wait, Soooyoung, you can’t leave me with this thing. I’ll just go with you.” Yuri’s plea was ignored since Sooyoung was already inside the cab. She would be fine riding Tiffany’s two-seater Bentley any day but not today. Her roommate will surely about her resemblance with her older brother.

“Get in, Yul. Or do you want me to leave you alone and sulk because you look like a dude?”

She opened the door to the passenger’s seat and got in. She slammed the door once inside.

“Can you please stop calling me Yul?”

“Why? Other people call you that, your brother said so. Now give me one good reason why I can’t call you Yul.”

She couldn’t think of any, “Fine just don’t call me ‘Manyul’.”

“Sure thing,” Tiffany grinned and drove off.

---

When they got home, they saw the girls lying lazily on the couch. Some of them were talking while some were watching a film. “Despicable Me.”

“Hi everyone, we’re back,” greeted Tiffany. She flipped her hair to put emphasis on her new hairstyle.

“Looking good dear sister,” Jessica said. She was happier than usual.

“Why, thank you, Jessie,” she replied sweetly.

“I still look better though.”

Tiffany pouted.

“I agree,” Taeyeon said still watching the movie ad not looking at the two.

“Yah! Taengoo-ah, you’re supposed to be on my side.”

“Not when the other side is Jessica’s,” Sunny stated. Taeyeon pinched her forearm. “Ouch, sorry,” she mumbled.

“What do you mean by, ‘Not when the other side is Jessica’s’?” Tiffany asked.

The two shook their head and said ‘Nothing’ in unison.

Jessica got up from her seat and sat beside Taeyeon. “Spill it,” she said, “What does Sunny mean by that?”

Taeyeon thought of a sensible excuse, “She means…I’ll always agree on whatever you say…because you’re my roommate and you are capable of killing me in my sleep.” She covered her head, anticipating a hit coming from Jessica. Wrong.

Jessica pinched her right ear which made poor Taeyeon yelp.

“Are you telling me I’m that evil?”

“Jessie, stop that or else I’ll tell—“

Jessica let go of her hold on Taeyeon’s ear and raised both her hands. “Why do you have to tell dad everything,” she mumbled.

“Just because. By the way, we saw Yuri’s brother,” she said grinning like an idiot.

“Is he hot?

“Is he tall?”

“What does he look like?”

The girls asked.

“Imagine ManYul here,” she pointed at Yuri who was now glaring at her for calling her ‘ManYul’ again, “with her hair chopped off.”

“All of her hair chopped off? You mean, bald?”

Tiffany nodded and said, “He’s hot.”

Everyone in the room imagined Yuri being bald and they all smiled.

“I believe, Fany. Yuri, can you introduce us to him?” Hyoyeon asked and Sunny nodded.

“He’s married.”

Everyone’s mood went down.

“Aww guys, don’t worry. We still have Yul,” Tiffany said as she placed an arm over Yuri’s shoulder that the latter shrugged off.

“I’ll cook our dinner tonight. Taeyeon, don’t cook anything and you,” she looked at Tiffany, “you’re not allowed to eat anything that I’ll make.”

Oh crap! I ticked ManYul off! Damn it! I have to order pizza again.

Hi. :) Started reading this again the other day because i missed it so much... pagkatapos ko basahin, it reminded me again that this will forever be one of my fav yulti fanfics. It's light and fun to read, at hindi putchu putchung pagkasulat.
I didnt get to comment much in ssf so imma say it here.
I really just love love love how you've written evrything.
Like how they actually hated each othr at first then came yuri falling for her unconciously. It was heartbreaking to read the soofany parts and yuri getting hurt. Id say u did a good job putting in the emotions into us readers.
And i love both of their characters here, both have great temper, and they argue a lot. Its boring to read about them all cheesy and stuffs so yeah i like it best when they argue.

The only thing im kinda disappointed about is u'll be ending this with an epilogue.
Coz tbh, i wanna read more of their progress. Argue even more, introducing each other to their parents, argue more, more jealousy, future talks like marriage and stuffs. And maybe a little look to their pasts like past flings esp tiffany's. And yes i am demanding like that. Lol
But i think it wouldnt happen so imma just imagine it all on my head.
And also, Pinoy ka din. So i love you na. Hahaha
I really liked it when u wrote about those Pinoy references and even choosing CamSur.
May twitter ka ba? Pahenge naman pra ma follow kita. Mehehehe
Pro basta, yun na yun. I really love this fic. And i hope you'd write more yulti ff. More Power. Fighting! :)
