Lesson Four

Interludium

The next morning Taehyung woke up on his sofa. Outside the sun was shining brightly already, warming up the town for the last days of summer. There were still birds singing lightly, but there was also another sound. Taehyung slowly opened his eyes, his arm still halfly covered them. He looked around until he noticed that he was in his living room. There it was again. Again and again there was that sound. The sound of a piano playing always the same part several times after another.
Taehyung rolled on his side and slowly moved up. It wasn't the best idea to sleep on the sofa but last night he was thinking a lot and it seemed like he fall asleep while staying on the couch. He listened to the piano, which kept playing the same part. He knew the sound was coming from Jungkook's apartment next door. He took a deep breath and rubbed his face to wake up. When he finally got up, Taehyung stretched his body before he ambled to his door. He put on some house shoes and walked over to Jungkook's door, where he rang the bell without a break.
The door opened and because he didn't want to get hit by the door again, Taehyung stepped aside. But this time Jungkook opened the door slowly and peeked out of a small gap. He blinked when he saw Taehyung. "I don't need any cleaning service at the moment", he said calmly.
"It's not about cleaning", Taehyung replied and grabbed the door to open it, which caused Jungkook to flinch.
"Iyann~", Jungkook whined slightly.
"What the heck is tht 'Iyaan' for?", Taehyung asked but didn't pay attention to Jungkook. He just passed the younger one and stepped inside Jungkook's apartment. "Look at it from my standpoint. I have to listen to such terrible pia", Taehyung talked and suddenly stopped as he saw Jungkook's living room again. It almost looked like they never had cleaned it up some days ago. Everywhere were clothes and stuff animals lying around. Empty bottles and plates with left overs were covering the table. "Why?! It's only been a few days, how the heck..." Taehyung couldn't believe it, he put so much afford in cleaning that room, but it was for nothing.
"I'm sorry...", Jungkook apologized but immediately walked over ot his piano, "I haven't finished memorizing it yet but I will do it somehow." Jungkook sounded desperated but the young boy didn't want to disappoint Taehyung again. "Please give me another week."
Taehyung observed the boy, who was trying hard to concentrate on the score.
"The promise was three days", Taehyung spoke and stepped behind Jungkook, who was sitting in front of his piano again, "I will play it for you. Listen and look at the score. If you can't look at it while playing, memorize it with those good ears." Jungkook wasn't sure if he was dreaming or not, but then Taehyung suddenly poke his cheek and the younger one couldn't help but smile.
Taehyung played the piece once from its beginning till the end for Jungkook, who stood besides the piano, observing how Taehyung's slim fingers flew over the keyboard so that they were producing the wonderful sound. "Wow! Amazing", Jungkook clapped his hands loudly as soon as Taehyung had finished, "Your playing is so accurate! Just exactly as it's written!"
"You're just too sloppy! To play with me, you have to get your part perfectly, okay?", Taehyung said and wanted to turn his face to Jungkook, who suddenly was really close to him. The younger one wanted to check the score and Taehyung didn't notice how close he was. Luckily Jungkook didn't notice Taehyung, who quickly turned away again after his nose got so close to Jungkook, that it had almost touched the younger one.
Now it was Jungkook's time to play it, but Taehyung told him that he wanted to help the younger one. Taehyung was professional and noticed every little mistake Jungkook was doing. "No, that's my part." - "Softer accompaniment." - "Your left hand is too loud again."

After a while Taehyung had decided to practice together at school, where they had two pianos. Every time Taehyung criticized something, Jungkook nodded and agreed, trying hard to play like the older one wanted it. "Play it smoothly like a violin. Pay attention to my sounds", Taehyung said while playing along with Jungkook, until he looked over to the younger one, who sulked and didn't play with all his heart like he used to do, "Stop with that face!"
"Huh?", Jungkook looked confused to Taehyung, but he was keeping his duckface like mouth, which hated Taehyung so much. Taehyung sighed and allowed Jungkook a short break to get some fresh air and eat something, but they quickly returned to pratice together.
"We're still not in synch", Taehyung spoke while playing the piano with Jungkook, but suddenly the younger one sighed and played the piece in a really sad and depressed way, "Don't change the keys!" The older one bumped his hands on the keys loudly and stood up. "I'm getting extremely irritated", he thought and frowned, "I know I'm not saying anything wrong" He looked at Jungkook who sadly played some keys on the piano and from one second to another Taehyung realized that he wasn't any better then Choi mubuchae, who used to scream at him always too. "Those lessons that I hated so much...", he kept thinking and sat down again, while he glance wandered to Jungkook again, who looked so sad, "I'm doing the exact same thing to him."
Taehyung suggested to return to Jungkook's place, where he could practice and Taehyung could listen only, since the academy was closing it's door for the day soon anyway. Although they had practiced the whole day already and Taehyung still wasn't satisfied, Jungkook didn't want to give up. He couldn't give up. He had to be able to play it the way it should be, so Taehyung would be satisfied and maybe even a bit proud of him.
The older one leaned against the wall next to Jungkook, who kept practicing. Taehyung slightly crossed his arms while listening carefully. When Jungkook had ended the piece, there was silence. The younger one turned slowly to Taehyung, waiting for him to say anything about it, but there was nothing. Taehyung looked like he was dreaming off with open eyes. "What's wrong?", Jungkook asked quietly, "I finally played it through without stumbling... Was there something weird?"
"Weird", Taehyung said unsolicitously.
"Where?", Jungkook asked and looked through the score. He wanted to find his mistake so he could do better the next time.
"It stinks...", Taehyung aspirated.
"Huh?" the younger one was confused and quickly turned back to Taehyung, who quickly covered his nose.
"Your head stinks..."
"Ehhh? Is that so?", Jungkook babbled and ruffled his hair, "But I washed it three days ago."
"Three days ago?!"
"Yes, I take a bath every other day, and I shampoo once every three days. I may not look like it, but I'm pretty clean, no?"
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?", Taehyung shouted and grabbed the boy on his collar, draggin him into is bathroom. There he pushed Jungkook over the bath tub and opened the shower extension, let the water hardly flowing on Jungkook's head, who screamed like a girl. "What do you mean 'I am pretty clean'? You are so not, did you ever take a look on your apartment? What kind of upbringing did you have?" Taehyung even shampooed Jungkook's head.
At the end Taehyung ended on Jungkook's bed, while Jungkook sat on the ground between Taehyung's legs. The older one was blow-drying Jungkook's hair, who was hugging one of his stuff animals, resting on it. "What am I doing?", Taehyung thought.
"Waah~ I feel good", Jungkook said happily and leaned against Taehyung's legs, who kept blow-drying him, "Kookie feels like a prince who's servant is doing everything for."
"Well and I feel like a dog groomer", Taehyung talked.
"Eh? A dog? Really?", Jungkook twitched and turned around to Taehyung, who turned off the hair blower, "Golden retriever? Chihuahua? Or maybe Shibaken?" Taehyung couldn't help but smile about the younger one's reaction, he had to admit that Jungkook was kinda cute in his own way.
"You...", Taehyung said and Jungkook looked up to him. For a moment they were looking into each other's eyes and time stopped for a second. "You are really weird."

On the next day Jungkook an Taehyung went to lesson together, yet they didn't had much to talk about but it didn't stop Jungkook from babbling around. Taehyung didn't listen to everything, because the younger one used to change the topics quickly and then suddenly talked about complete nonsense. Maybe it wasn't nonsense to Jungkook, but Taehyung couldn't follow the younger one's mind.
Their teacher was already waiting for them in the practicing room. Jungkook quickly walked over to his piano, playing quietly around. Whenever a piano was around the young boy seemed to be more happy than he was before. "Are you sure you're ready?", Yongbae asked Taehyung with a calm voice, "If you're not, we can postpone it."
"I promised to do it in three days."
Yongbae nodded and looked at Jungkook, who used the time to check the score once more. It was payday and he didn't want to make any mistake, because Jungkook wanted to make it good, to see Taehyung being proud of him and to avoid that the older one will get mad with him again. "Jungkook-ssi is looking at the score", the teacher mentioned and couldn't believe his eyes. He was Jungkook's teacher since the boy had started studying at the academy and he never saw Jungkook working with the score before.
Taehyung looked at Jungkook, who was concentrated on the score, but suddenly his fingers stopped moving and the boy twitched. A mistake. Taehyung felt bad. Because of the pressure he put on Jungkook to play perfectly, when the younger one wanted to play with him. Jungkook sighed loudly and Taehyung turned his head away. He didn't know if he did right but pushing the kid so much. "Jungkook", Taehyung suddenly said and the boy looked confused over to him, but Taehyung kept looking away, "Play as you like." Then Taehyung turned back to Jungkook, who was obviously surprised about the older one's words. "Today you can play freely."
"Seonbae...", Jungkook talked quietly, his expression was a mixture of sadness, astonishment and a smile, "You just called me Jungkook for the first time..."
Taehyung gave the boy a slight smile before he turned to his piano. "I can tell...", he thought, "...he definitely has something special. And the person who can accompany him is only me!"
They both laid their hands on the keyboards and at the same time they looked at each other. Jungkook nodded and with the slight nod of Taehyung they started playing together. While Taehyung was looking at the score, Jungkook followed Taehyung's words to play freely, so he used to look on his hands only. "Up till now it's in perfect unison but the problem is after...", Taehyung thought, "Most of the time, the first piano presents the theme single-handedly." Taehyung's look wandered from the score over to Jungkook, who obviously enjoyed playing freely, it suited his personality and character. "There it is again", Taehyung immediately thought when he saw Jungkook, who was making his common duckface-mouth, "That mouth. He's starting to deviate. As soon as I tell him to play freely, he does as he pleases but I will accompany it." And so Taehyung did. He played along with Jungkook, so that they were still in synch. "I already know his habits. There. He skipped and bounced. Actually, his playing has been on my mind for a long time. I had always deamt of a moment, when I can be able to make music, a performance, which takes the people by heart, but I had given up on it until yesterday." Taehyung often looked at Jungkook, who was deeply into the piece, not noticing how the older one even smiled lightly while observing Jungkook. "Right now my body is even tingling a little."
When they ended the piece perfectly in synch, Yongbae could only clap to them. He didn't imagine that Jungkook could play like this, neither he thought that Taehyung would still let him be himself. "Bravo!", he said and stepped between is two students, "That's great, Taehyung-ssi. Seems like you've overcome a slump."

When the lesson was ended, Taehyung left first. He didn't know that Yongbae had already known that Taehyung had problems himself. Taehyung walked outside the building. The sun was already setting, wrapping the area in a warm, orange light. "So, it wasn't about helping a hubae...", Taehyung thought while walking down the way, "It was a lesson for me." He remembered his teacher's words, which he told his students, when Taehyung asked what he meant by overcoming a slump.
"People say that this piece for two pianos was composed for a talented student. But perhaps his real objective was to recall how to purely enjoy music by playing with him", Yongbae had said.
Taehyung stopped and looked up, holding his hand in front of his eyes, so he won't look directly into the red shining sun. "That raccoon professor...", Taehyung thought.
Jungkook had followed Taehyung outside. He kept some space, because the older one seemed to be deeply in thoughts. When Taehyung stopped and looked up to the sky, Jungkook stood some steps behind the other one. He laid his head aside and stared at Taehyung's back. "Kookie's heart is thumping and I want to jump on your back", Jungkook mumbled but Taehyung heard him and turned around to the boy, giving him a confused glance, "Could this be we are falling in love?"
Jungkook ran over to Taehyung, who stepped aside to avoid the boy. With one hand Taehyung pushed Jungkook away. "No! Absolutely not!"
"But my chest feels so tight", Jungkook admitted and turned back to Taehyung. Once again the younger one walked over to Taehyung, but this time the older one stopped Jungkook by holding him on his head. Jungkook had pursed his lips, ready to kiss Taehyung. "Listen!", Taehyung talked strictly, "It just happened to go well today. Normally, such a performance is unacceptable. If you can't play according to the score, you don't stand a chance in competitions."
Jungkook laughed and stepped back. "Kookie in a competition? What are you saying? Kookie certainly won't play in any competition." Jungkook turned back and walked off and Taehyung was following him slowly.
"Then why did you enter the music academy? Why do you practice every day?"
Jungkook turned around to Taehyung and smiled brightly. "Because Kookie wants to be a kindergarden teacher."
Taehyung's eyes grew round because he was surprised. He hadn't expected such an answer of the younger one. "Is that your dream?", he asked and Jungkook nodded happily, then the younger one was prancing over the stairs of the foreplace and Taehyung looked after him. He smiled. He had to admit that Jungkook was a nice person, although he was the weirdest guy Taehyung ever had met. Maybe he even was a bit cute. "Seems like there are amazing people in Korea too", Taehyung thought, "There are things that I can still do here."

On the next morning Taehyung went to the academy early. He wanted to change devisions. Since he wanted to become a choreographer, he should do so and not only teach himself. Yet he never wanted to join the academy's choreographer division, because he couldn't go abroad anyway so it was for nothing. But the last day changed his mind. He walked straight to the register building, where he wanted to give Yongbae his application to change devisions. He was walking down the way and suddenly a bulk of students came, running crisscross. Taehyung was confused and didn't know what was going on. All the students were running to the secretariat, where he was heading to also. When he arrived the stairs to the building another bulk was coming. Taehyung quickly stepped aside, so he won't overrun by them.
"Hmph! Groupies", someone said cockily and Taehyung looked to the person, who was talking. It was a boy, he was a bit smaller than him, wearing colourful hiphop clothes. His hair was hidden under a cap, but small little curls looked out of it. "What's so great about Kwon Jiyong coming to the choreographer division?"
"No way!", Taehyung couldn't believe what he was hearing and talked to himself, "It's too good to be true! Just right after I decided to transfer to the choreographer division..." When he finally understood what was going on, he also started to run into the register building.
"Hey!", the hiphop boy said and quickly ran after Taehyung.
The secretariat was already crowded with students. They were pushing and pulling harshly because everyone wanted to take a look at the famous choreographer. It was loud because they all were talking across the room. "Somehow... in person, he looks a little bit different", one boy mentioned, who was holding a newpaper in his hands, which showed a picture of Kwon Jiyong.
Taehyung and the other boy arrived at the scene and swarmed themselves through the bulk of students. He was looking around. The teachers had surrounded the famous choreographer, so it was hard to see the man, but then someone moved and Taehyung's eyes grew big, when he recognized the man. It was the old man, who Taehyung had kicked out of his apartment.
Also the other boy's expression became surprised. "Oh, no! That old man, who ate at my dad's restaurant", Yoongi said surprised.
"You want to make a new students dance group?", Choi Seunghyun asked the famous choreographer, who nodded in agreement.
"With the students I choose, I will make my own group."
"But our agreement was that you would teach the choreographer division and A-group as guest instructor", Choi Seunghyun spoke.
"Of course, I'll honor that agreement. I just want more students to have a chance to take my lessons. Please gather the students from these photos", Kwon Jiyong talked and put down several photos of students on the table in front of him.
The teachers looked through the photos carefully and Choi Seunghyun looked confused to the choreographer. "Are... are you serious about them?", he asked and looked through more pictures, "This one is from the piano divison."
Taehyung saw the newspaper, which one student was holding. "Let me borrow this", he said and ripped the newspaper out of the boy's hands. He looked at the picture of Kwon Jiyong and then threw the newspaper on the counter in front of him. "Huh? Is something wrong?", Yoongi asked, who got a little fright when Taehyung through the newspaper away.
"Something wrong, you ask?", Taehyung spoke, but he was more talking to himself than to the boy, "I can't chance divisions!"
