Scar-face 1

That Thing Called One-Shots

I hate everything. Everyone. I hate myself.

I once had everything at the palm of my hand. Money, fortune, looks and love. I was my schools’ top student, star player and things alike. Many students idolized me and many envies me. Back then I thought everything is going to be okay. That I’ll always be the best at anything and everything. But what happened to me took me by surprise. My whole life took a 180 degrees turn.

I was just a teenager back then. I was about to go home after drinking with my friends one night. I was drunk. I was passing thru a bridge long story short, I wasn’t fully aware of the road, my car that I sneaked from our house fell over the bridge. BAM. Everything went blank. I woke up in a hospital with a big bandage on the left side of my face. After a few weeks the doctor took off the bandage and when I saw myself in front of the mirror, the first thing I felt was disgust. The half of my face is ruined.

The next thing I knew, people stared avoiding me because of my face, even my so-called friends. I became depressed because of that, my grades started to flop, I was kicked-out of the basketball team, people started to make stories about me and my face, they would call me names and stuff. They started calling me Scar-face.

Since then I’ve been this stupid, cold, arrogant, selfish, good-for-nothing, worthless human being monster that I am. I started to care for nothing and become the monster people think that I am. My life is a living hell.

After high school, I home-schooled college to avoid people and their judging stares. I finished music major in guitar.

My brother took over our company and I just stayed in my apartment with my curtains always down and locking myself from everything and everyone.  I don’t talk to anyone, only when needed. I stay as far from people as possible. If I needed to go out I always put on a hoodie and keep my head down.

Today is a Sunday. I got out of bed, not knowing what time it is already. In my apartment there’s only night. Not a single ray from the sun can enter my room, I like it this way. I slowly walk to the kitchen to make some coffee. I always need a coffee after I wake up. I rummaged my pantry and found none. I went to grab my jacket, I’ve decided to buy now at the convenience store around the corner near my apartment.

I made sure that my hood will cover the majority of my face before going out of my apartment. As I opened the door, I squint my eyes to adjust quickly to the hallway’s lighting. I kept my hood up and my face down to avoid staring eyes. I hate attention. As I got out of the lobby I realized that’s already night. I don’t really give a damn. I walk briskly so that I could go home sooner. I reached the store and bought some coffee. After scanning my item, I immediately gave the exact amount needed. I didn’t wait for the receipt or for the clerk to put it in a bag. I just grab it and left.

I was walking with the coffee bag in my hand. I walked in an alley that serves as a shortcut. As I made my turn I immediately saw a group of men encircling a woman. From the look of it the woman was being harassed. Though I would gladly just walk passed it, I have this need in me to save the girl. As I got nearer their attention was shifted on me.

“Leave her alone.” I told them, still keeping my head down. I got in front of the girl trying to protect her.

“Ooh, a knight in shining armour.” A bald guy said, smirking.

“Mind your own business jerk.” A guy with a bad tattoo said.

“Not until you leave her.” I said.

“Why you little.. Why don’t you just go back to the hell whole you’ve come from!!” another guy said.

“I bet you would like it in there.” I said to him.

The guy launched forward aiming to hit me in the face. All I had to do was take off my hood. When I let the hood down, I can see pure horror in their eyes. I don’t know if I should feel happy since they ran for their lives or be ashamed because they ran away because of the horror my face gives people.

After seeing that their gone, I quickly put my hood up making sure the woman wouldn’t see my face to avoid giving her horror. As I was about to leave she grab may jacket.

“Mister. Thanks. May I at least know your name? I’m Krystal.” The girl said. Krystal?

“I’m no one. And I’m a girl.” I answered my back facing her.

“Oh sorry, miss. Let me just at least treat you or something.” She said.

“Let’s just forget this happened, okay?” I said calmly.

“I just want to know why they ran away from you when you took off your hood.” She said.

“If I show you my face then you’ll run away too.” I told her.

“No, I won’t. I promise.” She said.

“You asked for it.” I said. I slowly face her. I slowly took off my hood and we’re now having an eye contact.

She was the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. My heart starts to beat loud and fast as her hands slowly made contact to my face. Why isn’t she running away? Isn’t she afraid? Isn’t she disgusted?

“Amber.” Krystal said.
