Chapter 43

Forever

Jessica’s Pregnancy Calendar – Week 5

Author’s POV:

“Are you ready?” Kris asked aloud, throwing on a simple jacket before stuffing his wallet, phone and keys into his pants pockets.

Jessica trotted herself out of the closet, in the midst of buttoning her blouse up. “Yes~” she responded half heartedly as she looked around to figure out what she was missing.

Kris only watched in amusement, leaning his body on her vanity table. It was clearly evident that his wife was not ready.

A look of remembrance struck on Jessica’s face before she ran back inside the walk-in closet. “Forgot my bag…” she mumbled, quickly flashing a meek smile towards Kris as she waltzed back out. “Wait…my phone.” She snatched her cell phone off the bed. “There.”

“Are you ready now?” Kris had his arms folded while he was waiting for her. A smile never left his face.

“Yes!” Jessica giggled at herself, knowing that she was being slow today.

“Alright then, let’s go.” Kris was about to walk out of the door.

“Wait!” Jessica had extended her bag towards him. “I have to use the bathroom.”

Kris chuckled at her before grabbing her bag and patiently waited for her to release her bladder. Jessica was being quite delayed today. From the fact that she was taking a while to prepare lunch and to even get changed. Kris couldn’t blame her though. She was too excited, prancing around about the proposal they were to witness later tonight. His wife had been too ecstatic to focus.

“Okay, now I’m really ready.” Jessica grinned, walking back out of the bathroom.

“Alright now, silly.” Kris gestured her to walk out first, being the gentleman that he is.

Seeming that they were going to announce Jessica’s pregnancy later tonight at the group dinner, both Jessica and Kris only thought it was right that their parents knew first. They were indeed going to be grandparents.

The married couple wanted to stop by the market to pick up a few gifts or such before visiting. Seeing that both set of parents get along well, it wasn’t a big shocker that they were having a family hangout over at the Jung’s residence. Apparently it was something that they called ‘Sunday Tea Time.’ But anyways, the couple called and was expected to drop by.

“What are we going to get them?” Kris asked, accelerating the car. He wondered what to get their parents.

Jessica gulped down a few drops from her water bottle. “I was planning on a fruit basket. Maybe wine?”

“That’s easy enough.” Kris drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, as he waited for the light to turn green.

“I can’t wait to see their faces when we tell them about our little blip.” Jessica grinned, pulling out the small ultrasound photo of their developing baby.

Kris intertwined their fingers together. “I’m sure they’re all going to go crazy like they’ve always had before when they suspected that you were pregnant before.” He chuckled. “But I just know they’ll be happy. They’ve been waiting for this news ever since we were dating.”

“I remember those times.” Jessica giggled, reminiscing back to the days where both their families would somehow jump to conclusions.

“Well, I suppose their wishes and hopes have come true.” Kris pecked her hand.

A small comforting silence between them filled the car as the radio played lightly. As they made their way towards a familiar road down to the nearest supermarket, they happy hummed to the music.

“Kris…” Jessica suddenly spoke up, making Kris hum a response, eyes still peeled on the road. “I have to use the restroom.”

“What?”

“I have to pee.”

“You just used the restroom before we left the house though.” Kris was uncomprehending of the situation.

“Well, I have to pee again.”

Kris’ eyes widened and became at a loss for what to do. “Jess, I can’t just stop here in the middle of the road.”

“I know you can’t, so hurry up and get off somewhere.” Jessica squirmed around in her seat.

“I don’t get it, babe. You just peed like five, ten minutes ago.” Kris was ridiculously confused and perplexed. “You’re kidding right?”

Jessica shook her head. “I’m not, Kris. Hurry and just pull off somewhere. I have to pee.”

“Just hold it in, we’re almost at the market.” Kris had slowed the car down as another car cut in front of them.

Jessica’s eyes widened. “Kris. Are you asking your pregnant wife to hold her bladder right now?” she looked at him with expectation.

“Oh, crap.” Kris remembered instantly after her statement.

In the world of pregnancy, there’s no such thing as ‘holding in your pee.’ In fact, it’s a given that pregnant women need to use the restroom at least almost every ten minutes. Pregnancy makes one rush to the restroom all the time. Doctor Lee had given them an in-depth talk about this. Boy, was he exact with his facts.

Slamming his foot down on the acceleration, Kris was basically in a one-person race as he swerved through several cars at a fast rate. Jessica needed to pee. This is a crisis. A crisis!

“Kris, slow down.” Jessica felt scared that he’d hit a bump or something and cause her to ricochet in her seat, which would only make her full bladder feel worse.

“There should be restrooms in the supermarket right?” Kris asked in a rush, feeling the adrenaline. “Why is there a line?!” he groaned, seeing that there’s a line to enter the market. A pregnant woman has to pee!!

“I think we should stick within a ten minute radius of a restroom whenever we go out.” Kris mentioned as soon as Jessica walked out of the public restroom.

“I think we do.” Jessica pouted, having the worst experience trying to hold in her bladder that just didn’t seem to work the same as before she was pregnant.

Kris only embraced her and kissed her temple in agreement. “Are you feeling better now?” Jessica nodded her head. “You sure you don’t need to use the restroom again?”

Jessica gave him a glare for his comment. “It’s too early for that joke.” She walked off towards the front of the market to grab a shopping cart.

Kris only snickered and followed her. “Are we getting a fruit basket?” he took charge of the cart, letting Jessica walk freely.

“Yep. To the left.” Jessica gave him directions to turn as she placed her bag down into the cart.

Reaching the fruits and vegetables section, Kris stood idly as Jessica did her thing. Examining the fruit, Jessica peeked in the neatly wrapped baskets. She wanted to check every single one of them, wanting to see if even one of them had better, fresh fruit.

Watching his wife, Kris couldn’t help but silently check her out. Jessica was only wearing a plain fitting blouse and jeans, but he couldn’t stop himself from marveling at her. His wife didn’t look pregnant at all. In fact, she looked just as slim and beautiful as she was when he first met her. As she moved, he ogled her hourglass curves. My oh my, was she flawlessly y.

“Excuse me.” A voice behind Kris breaks him from his trance.

Turning around, Kris was met with a lady that needed to get by the aisle. He politely scooted over to let her push her cart through. The woman was about to pass, but she looked back and sighed out wearily.

The lady walked back a few steps to retrieve her daughter that was busily playing around with a few loose fruits. “Come on, let’s go.” She huffed out, grabbing the child by her hand and towing her along.

“Apple!” The little girl shouted sadly, her hand outstretched towards the fruits she was looking at from before. “No!” she frowned, looking as if she was going to cry.

Wringing her hand loose from her mother’s grip, the child ran back towards the apples. Kris watched as the mother grew angry in an instant.

“Stop wandering off! I said no more playing!” the woman grabbed the child harshly by the arm and yanked the apples off her daughter’s small hands.

“…Apples.” The little girl whimpered before breaking out in tears. Within a second, the wailing emitted, making Kris jolt in surprise at the high-pitched cry. The mother gave an embarrassed apologetic smile as she carried her child in her arms and quickly walked off.

Wow. Kris could only stare at the wailing child from afar, kicking and screaming at her mother despite being hugged onto. A grim look washed over Kris’ face. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to deal with something like that. Not with an over reactive and sensitive child. He silently hoped that his child wouldn’t become like that.

Not wanting to see any more of the loud behavior, Kris glanced around to look for Jessica. His eyes blinked openly when he couldn’t catch sight of his wife. It was his fault for being distracted and not being able to follow up on her. Now he doesn’t know where she went and he personally knew that his wife does tend to walk around a lot while grocery shopping.

Scanning around, Kris tried to concentrate on finding Jessica, but he couldn’t help but only hear the loud crying from the little girl from before. Just as he was mentally complaining, the wailing stopped. Curiously, he glanced over toward the little girl and spotted his wife happily playing around with the child. The little girl giggled joyously as she watched Jessica’s animated expressions, having fun as she was being lifted in her mother’s arms.

The little queasy and uneasy feeling in Kris died down instantly at the sight. Jessica just has a way with kids. It made him feel reassured and calm, even hopeful.

Watching till the scene prevails, Kris grinned when Jessica handed the little girl a lollipop from her tote bag. The child was instantly giddy and yelped in happiness. After a few seconds, the mother prodded the child to say their thanks and Jessica sparked a small conversation with the mother. With the way Jessica caressed her own stomach, Kris could tell that Jessica revealed the fact that she was expecting a child of her own. The mother made a few compliments here and there before walking off, leaving Jessica in a joyous mood.

Kris strolled his way over to her. By the time he reached her, Jessica went back to inspecting the fruits. A small frown hung on her lips. The fruits were unsatisfactory.

“Since when did we have lollipops?” Kris stood beside her and held her by the waist.

“Ever since your pregnant wife started to crave for candy.” Jessica grinned at him before walking off first.

With one hand holding onto the front of the cart, Jessica walked lightly and led the way as Kris towed behind, pushing the cart. “No fruit baskets?” he asked.

Jessica shook her head. “No, they’re not that fresh. I’d rather go for the wine.”

Kris only nodded his head. Once they reached the beverage section, the husband took it upon himself to pick and choose which wine to take, being the one who is more familiar and friendlier with alcoholic beverages. Having a low tolerance for alcohol, Jessica wasn’t the best at anything related to those kinds of beverages. Although she could say she improved her tolerance after being with Kris for so long.

“One?” Kris held the single glass bottle in his hand.

Jessica curled her lip in contemplation. “Two. One for each family.”

“Hopefully they’ll be able to finish it.” Kris placed the two wine bottles gently into the cart. “Because we obviously can’t help them.” He caressed his wife’s tummy.

“I can’t, but you can.” She corrected him.

Kris hummed. “I can, but someone has to drive my wife and baby home. A pregnant woman shouldn’t drive.” He pecked her cheek.

“You ready?” Kris asked as soon as he parked the car safely on the driveway.

Jessica only glanced at him and smiled. She nodded her head and the two shared a kiss. The couple shuffled out of the car after making sure Jessica had her ultrasound picture safely tucked into her wallet.

Once Kris grabbed their gift out of the car, they locked the automobile and reached the door. Jessica pressed the doorbell once and as expected, the door whipped open within a short thirty seconds. Krystal was always fast at opening doors.

“Unnie!!” Krystal leaped into Jessica’s arms without any hesitation, giving her a tight bear hug.

Jessica almost stumbled back due to the force, catching the worried expression on Kris’ face. “Soojungie, did you miss me?” she nevertheless joked around.

“Be gentle.” Kris warned, pulling Krystal back from Jessica.

Krystal only gave him a questioning look. “Why? It’s not like she’s an elderly. Unless…”

“I’m just feeling a little under the weather.” Jessica cut in, not wanting to ruin the whole announcement already.

“Are you sick?!” Krystal instantly became worried for her older sister. “Did the old man get you sick?”

Kris only gaped at her with a dull look. “She wouldn’t get sick if you let us in the house.” He emphasized, finding it very congesting to be stuck at the front door for more than three minutes.

“Jeez, maybe I should just let unnie in and you can just stand out there even longer. That way she wouldn’t get sick.” Krystal retorted, letting Jessica pass through and into the house.

The little Jung only stuck her tongue out at the man. Kris only shook his head and ruffled her head of hair before walking inside as well, grinning. It’s been too long, little brat.

“Stupid jerk.” Krystal shut the door and skipped past her brother-in-law with a smirk on her face, almost as if she knew what Kris was thinking.

Making it into the kitchen, Kris quickly made greetings and gave hugs right after Jessica had finished. Presenting them with the wine, the parents expressed their gratitude and happiness to see them. It’s been a couple months or so since they met up with their parents and in-laws.

“How are you two?” Mommy Wu was the first to perk up. “Is the married life still as good as it was in the beginning?”

“Oh just look at them!” Mommy Jung spoke up afterwards. “They’re definitely never going to pass that honeymoon phase!” she grinned at the couple who were already tangled in each other’s arms.

“It’s nice to see true, pure love nowadays.” Father Jung pointed out. “My princess found herself a prince. A very reliable and handsome one at that.” He chuckled.

“I remember when I was that young.” Father Wu sighed. “Those were the days.”

Mommy Wu gasped. “What are you trying to imply?” she gave him a warning look.

“Nothing!” Father Wu tried to clear his name. “I was just simply saying that those were great times that continued to grow till today.”

“Aigoo~ Let’s not dwell on this little squabble. We all know he was kidding.” Mommy Jung settled it within seconds. “Let’s open up a bottle of wine and really catch up with our kids, shall we?”

Krystal only jumped up with excitement and reached for the wine glasses. “I call the first glass!” she held her glass up, standing in front of her father, who was opening the bottle.

“Whoa there.” Kris took the wine glass away from Krystal. “Aren’t you a little too young for this stuff?”

Whoa there.” Krystal mimicked him and snatched the glass back. “I turned twenty-one already.” She gave him an expression full of mockery.

Kris scowled at the younger sister-in-law, before receiving his own glass from one of the parents. “The baby Jung has turned into an adult…” he murmured with a tone of disbelief, retreating back to his wife.

Jessica only patted his cheek lightly. “She’s growing up too fast.” She grinned, knowing that Krystal is now an adult.

“She still acts like a child though.” Kris inputted, shaking his head.

“You’re still a child at heart too.” Jessica said as a matter of fact. “With your adorable pouty lips.” She giggled, reaching up to pinch his cheeks.

Kris only scrunched up his face and placed his glass of wine down to grasp at her hands to stop pulling at his cheeks.

“Jessi~” Mommy Wu called, walking closer with two wine glasses in hand. “Here you go.” She handed a glass towards her.

Jessica saw the glass and immediately shook her head. “Oh, no, it’s fine.” She denied the drink.

Mommy Wu suddenly recalled. “Oh that’s right! You have a low tolerance for alcohol!” she pursed her lips. “But I thought you worked on it?” she extended the glass of wine towards her again.

“No, it’s okay.” Jessica was unwilling to take it and waved her hands in denial. “I don’t think I should…” she gave a small smile.

“Oh~ don’t worry! A little won’t hurt. Yifan is here anyways. You won’t be getting yourself in any trouble. Just take it, honey.” Mommy Wu handed the glass over with a final look.

Kris stepped in. “Mom, she said she didn’t want it.” He wrapped an arm around his wife.

“Oh come on~ a little wine won’t hurt! I promise! It’s for a little celebration.” Mommy Wu smiled and tried to get Jessica to take the glass.

“No, mom.” Kris said with a final tone. “She can’t.” he was strict on his words.

The room fell into a small comfortable silence when they realized that Jessica was not willing to drink. Everyone took it as a considerate gesture, knowing that Jessica could not take alcohol that well, she didn’t want to ruin the little get-together.

“Unnie~! Just take it! It’ll be our first time drinking together!” Krystal cheered, taking the glass from Mommy Wu and taking the initiative to persuade her older sister this time.

“No, it’s alright, Soojung. Maybe next time, okay?” Jessica tried to compromise, knowing that Krystal really wanted to do that by the tone of her voice.

“Oh come on! Don’t be a party pooper! Just do it! We’re all adults here!” Krystal nudged Jessica. “Just take a sip at least. Hm?” she held the glass all the way towards Jessica’s lips.

Jessica only kept her lips sealed and shook her head.

“Stop it, Soojung.” Kris made her retract her arm. “She can’t drink it.”

Krystal pouted and backed up. “Why not? It’s not like she’s going to pass out!”

“Yifan, don’t be so strict on your wife.” Father Wu spoke up. “She should drink with us. It’s a special get together. Don’t be so controlling.”

“There’s no harm in drinking a bit.” Father Jung agreed. “Go ahead and drink the glass, princess.” He grinned at Jessica.

“We should all drink! You two brought the wine and you guys aren’t going to drink with us?” Mommy Jung gave a playful frown.

The couple only gave each other a glance and knew it was time to spill the secret. Kris stood behind her and held his hands at her hips.

“It’s not that she doesn’t want to,” Kris explained, kissing Jessica’s temple.

“I can’t,” Jessica blinked at the five people staring at her. “Because of our little blueberry.”

Both Kris and Jessica grinned widely as they both caressed Jessica’s tummy. At the gesture, everyone in the room fell into a silent pause with their jaws dropped. Plastered on each parent’s face was a blank expression of disbelief and all the married couple could do was chuckle at their reactions.

Slowly but surely, the two women placed their glasses down on the counter before cupping their mouths with their palms. After stuttering and shaking, the ladies somehow grabbed onto each other’s arm and squeaked out incoherent mumbles due to the overwhelming emotions. With the women having a happy emotional breakdown, the men were just standing there with the same shocked face.

“…I’m going to be a grandfather…” Father Jung sputtered out, still not having the big news hit him yet.

We’re going to be grandfathers…” Father Wu corrected, a small smile making it’s way onto his face. “I’m going to have a grandchild.” He choked. “I’m going to be a grandpa!!” he sounded as if he was sobbing. “It’s finally time to retire!! Yes!” he pumped his fist up. “I’m just kidding,” he laughed. “Congratulations, my babies~” he rushed over and was the first one to engulf the couple with a big hug.

“Dad, you’re so weird.” Kris shook his head, but nevertheless accepted the hug.

“I don’t think you should retire just yet. You still look young enough.” Jessica laughed, making her father-in-law chuckle.

“MY BABY IS HAVING A BABY!” Mommy Jung squealed, despite the tears streaming down her face. “Jung Sooyeon, you have made mommy proud! I’m so proud of you. I really am! Congratulations!! Omo~ I just can’t believe this!”

Mommy Wu sniffled, swiping her tears. “Wu Yifan…” she approached her son, giving him the biggest hug of his life. “You have finally fulfilled your mother’s dream. I just knew this was bound to happen sooner or later. I’m proud of you, Yifan. I’m proud to know that dad has taught you well. I’m glad there were no malfunctions this time. Mommy is not disappointed in you anymore, okay?”

“Mom…” Kris had a distorted facial expression. “I just can’t even…I can’t even answer that.” He sighed in defeat.

“Dad, are you okay?” Jessica smiled happily at her father, who was still in the midst of trying to get the message around his head.

Father Jung just suppressed the upcoming tears. “My princess has grown up.” He chuckled and sniffled while he encased Jessica into a hug. “There’s going to be another addition to the family…you’re growing up too fast, Sooyeon.” He took a minute to gather his thoughts. “It’s time for me to become a grandpa now. Boy, does that term make me sound old…” he laughed, joking around.

“I take it back! I won’t force you to drink any wine!” Mommy Wu made the six of them burst into laughter.

“We should make a toast though! This is really a special gathering!” Mommy Jung wiped the remaining tears from her face before holding up her glass.

Getting Jessica a glass of water instead, everyone in the room decided that this was something they definitely needed to praise and remember. With all of them raising their glasses, Jessica didn’t fail to remember the extra and semi-forgotten presence in the room.

“Soojungie~ Get over here~” Jessica urged her baby sister to come over and join them.

Krystal only snapped out of her daze when she got called on. It was then that it struck like lightning. Oh my god. Jessica’s pregnant.
