Choose Me

School love never really seemed to last in Hayun’s life. Every school year there always seemed to be someone who made her heart skip a few beats. This year; Jaebum.

Jaebum was everything Hayun had ever imagined in a potential boyfriend, he was smart and handsome, he was muscular but not overly. Jaebum was perfection in a human form. Hayun’s heart beat like crazy whenever Jaebum was around, his thick arms and cold exterior made for the perfect ‘bad boy’. Jaebum displayed a lot of tsundere and always acted cold; Hayun had been slightly turned off by the fact that Jaebum always seemed to be angry, no matter what you did.

That had all changed the day of the fire drill. Hayun had yet to buy her new winter jacket with the money she had been saving up from her part time job and when the fire alarm started to scream in the middle of winter Hayun knew she was screwed. The winter nipped at her exposed arms and face as she tried her hardest to stop the numbness of the cold from spreading throughout her entire body. That was when she felt the pressure of a jacket falling onto her shoulders, strong hands rubbed her shoulders through the jacket.

“The sunlight of summer should not feel the cold nip at her skin, not even in the coldest of days.” Jaebum's voice came from behind Hayun as she tried to process his words. Had he tried to make a pun out of her name? But just as Hayun was about to turn to Jaebum, the boy was gone. Leaving only the memory, a jacket that smelt of him and desire to get to know him better left.

Jaebum just seemed like he was perfect in every way, perfect boyfriend material that was. Jaebum was the type of person you knew would love you and only you because he would only act loving around you and wouldn’t go around hugging and touching others, because that just wasn’t his personality. He was warm and loving, but only to the people he truly loved.

“Hayun-a~” Youngjae’s voice called from down the hall, pulling Hayun out of her daydream and slightly scaring her which made Youngjae laugh.

Youngjae’s personality could only be described properly in two words; ‘Human sunshine’. Youngjae was just a ball of light and positivity, if you ever felt down or pessimistic Youngjae was the one to call. Youngjae had been Hayun’s best friend since childhood.

Unlike a normal childhood friendship, Hayun and Youngjae’s parents weren’t friends, in fact their parents hated each other. Youngjae’s mother didn’t approve of Hayun, she was always somehow getting in trouble, her awkwardness and clumsiness only made for one mess of a human being. But youngjae never seemed to care, in fact he would only laugh at Hayun before helping her to feel better.

“Youngjae!” Hayun called back, running and meeting Youngjae in a friendly hug. Youngjae lifted Hayun just the slightest bit off the ground and laughed when Hayun let out a small squeal.

“I see a certain lover boy…” Youngjae teased once Hayun was back on her own two feet.

Youngjae knew all about Jaebum and Hayun’s irrational love for him, and it wasn’t that Youngjae exactly supported Hayun’s crush on Jaebum but more supported the fact that he now had another thing to tease his poor best friend about.

Hayun turned around, looking to see if Jaebum was truly there but Youngjae only laughed. Hayun sighed deeply, slapping Youngjae on his shoulder for teasing her. The boy laughed, Hayun blushed. She hated how Youngjae could so easily get under her skin.

“You’re so desperate Hayun! What are we to do with you?” Youngjae asked still laughing uncontrollably. Hayun placed her head in her hands, trying to cover her reddened cheeks. Youngjae gripped his stomach which now hurt from laughing so hard. Hayun couldn't help but wonder if under Youngjae's shirt he had a toned chest or a cute tummy…
What am I thinking?Hayun asked herself, shaking her head and pulling herself back into reality.

“Choi Youngjae You are so mean!” Hayun yelled, about to hit Youngjae again when a cold wind and a soft smell entered Hayun’s nose and she felt frozen in place.

A boy Hayun had never seen before passed her, his blonde hair cut long enough that it was covering his eyebrows and just the slightest tops of his eyes. He seemed so mysterious as he walked by, the smell of a restaurant wafting with him as he walked.

“Hey man, are you new?” Youngjae asked, reverting from his playful self to his more serious front he put up around other men. Hayun used to hate the fact that Youngjae changed so drastically depending on who he was around and would usually take time to for it. But Hayun was just a little distracted by this stranger.

The boy only nodded and gave a weak smile before walking away, leaving both Hayun and Youngjae in awe for different reasons. Whereas Youngjae couldn’t believe that the boy had just walked away, Hayun was in awe of the new boy. Hayun wanted to know this boy, it was strange but she just felt the need to know him, the need to be close to him.

“Youngjae… I’ll be right back.” Hayun mumbled dismissively bolting off in the direction that the blonde haired boy had headed in. Hayun needed to know this guy.

“Hey excuse me!” Hayun yelled once she had finally caught up to him Hayun was breathless from her run and tried to hide that factor. The boy turned around, his dark eyes matching with Hayun’s. Hayun felt her breath being taken out of her body, the exact same way she felt when Jaebum had looked into her eyes.

“I’m sorry, did I do something?” The boy asked, his english accent prominent. Hayun didn’t know what else to say and so she simply didn’t respond and stared into his eyes. The two of them just stood there for a while, looking at each other. It was a good chance for Hayun to catch her breath and figure out what should come next.

“My name’s Hayun…” Hayun blurted when she could finally open . “I don’t recognise you.”

“My name’s Mark, I just moved here from america.” He responded, offering his hand to shake. Hayun giggled softly and took his hand, bowing in the process. Mark gave Hayun a sheepish look. “I forgot about the bow I’m sorry…”

Hayun just shook her head in response, a big smile stretching across her lips and giggles escaping. Mark responded by laughing too, his smile making Hayun’s heart beat faster as he reached behind his head to scratch his poofy hair.

“You have one of the cutest laughs…” Mark finally said, breaking the silence. Hayun was about to respond when the bell rang. Mark turned to her and showed his schedule, “I uhh…”
Hayun had almost forgot Mark was new. Hayun nodded, pointing Mark in the direction of his class. He thanked her quickly before running off.

Just as Mark entered the classroom Hayun felt the need for him and made the choice that changed everything...

Chase after Mark

“Mark wait!” Hayun called catching the boy just on time. Mark turned around, his eyes full of curiosity and what Hayun read as the slightest bit of relief.

Hayun didn’t know exactly what she was going to say next but when she ran up to the strange boy she understood what she wanted to do. Hayun looked up to Mark’s eyes and down to his lips, back to his eyes; asking the unsaid question.

“Yes” Mark whispered, leaning right into the smaller girl and connecting his lips to hers. Hayun’s hands instinctively moved up towards Mark’s hair and her fingers entwined in his fluffy blonde hair. Mark's hands began to explore down to Hayun’s hips, pulling her closer.

Hayun couldn’t help but wonder what exactly was happening. She just met this boy, she didn't even know who he was, and yet it felt like something so pure, a love so pure she didn’t even care people were watching. Was this love at first sight? It had always been something Hayun had written off as a myth and yet here Hayun was wondered what would happen next, she definitely didn’t want to lose Mark Now that she’s found him.

“Hayun…” Mark panted once they finally split, placing his forehead against hers. “Be my girlfriend?”

Hayun felt joy wave over her as she nodded furiously. Both lovers grabbed their foreheads in pain and started laughing. Of course Hayun had to ruin the moment! Her forehead was in intense pain but the joy and pure love she felt pulsing through her acted as the best band-aid.

“Meet me at the front after class!” Mark yelled down the hall and Hayun gave a quick thumbs up before disappearing into her class.

“Hayun-a!” Mark called, catching the girl's attention before quickly pulling her closer to him and giving her a peck on the lips. Hayun looked up into the boy's dark eyes, seeing herself in the reflection, hair messy and eyes full of love. She looked better than she had in the past four years. But that little peck was not enough and Hayun started to crave his candy lips on hers, his strong arms wrapped around her waist.

“Mark…” Hayun whispered her breath being stolen by the taller boy’s loving gaze. Mark’s eyes stayed patient as Hayun tried to think of what she was going to say but she just couldn’t wrap her head around the whole situation. She just wanted Mark to be closer to her. “Stay..” She whispered and Mark only nodded attaching his lips to hers. “Be mine Hayun…”

Head to class

“Hayun! Hurry we’re going to be late!” Youngjae’s voice called from behind Hayun and she turned to face her best friend, forgetting about the transfer student and heading back to class, hand in hand with her oldest friend.

“Youngjae?” Hayun asked, not sure exactly what she was going to ask him, it was more that she wanted to confirm that it was Youngjae.

“Yeah?” Youngjae responded, turning to face Hayun his eyes sparkling. Hayun just shook her head, a smile forming as the thought of the transfer student slipped her mind and she wrapped her arms around Youngjae. It had been such a strange day and so much had changed, yet as always Youngjae was there to be her sunshine.

“Eh it’s nothing..” She responded shaking her head and feeling her hands grow clammy. “Let’s get to class.”

When did Hayun become like this around Youngjae? Maybe it was the way he talked to that transfer student, it made Hayun remember that Youngjae wasn’t still that kid she used to play house with as a kid. Hayun had never even considered Youngjae as more than a friend but recently he just seemed to be exactly what Hayun was looking for.

Youngjae was always by her side, always understood when she was upset and took care of her, he never pressured her to do anything but also convinced her to do things she never imagined. Like jump off a cliff into rushing rivers, or the time he took her to the local grocery store and bought almost everything with her ex’s credit card.

Now that Hayun’s eyes were opened she didn’t know if she could close them again.

Youngjae gave Hayun a strange look before sitting down beside her and scribbling something on a piece of paper and handing it to her. Hayun laughed, they hadn’t passed notes since fourth grade when Ms.Choi called their parents because they were writing swear words but replacing one letter so they technically weren’t swearing.

Hayun looked at the page and in Youngjae’s neat writing it read ‘you’re acting weird something you want to tell me?’ Hayun looked over the older boy, whose eyes were full of pity and curiosity.

‘Have you ever considered dating?’Hayun scribbled, passing the note back to him. Youngjae read it and looked up at Hayun, nodding.

“Who?” Hayun mouthed and Youngjae looked away blushing. He wrote something down on the paper but erased it and wrote something down, only to erase it again repeating this process a couple more times before finally passing the note back to Hayun.

‘Someone super close to me, I’ve had a crush on them since before they even talked to me but now I don’t know what to do…wbu?’

Hayun placed pencil to paper and let loose.Just recently there’s someone I’ve had my eye on but today I realised he was always there for me and he never left my side, even when Ms.Choi called our parents and his mother told him to never see me again and yelled at me for being a bad influence. He still snuck out of his house to see me and make sure I was okay…’ she shyly passed the paper back to the boy, whose eyes she couldn’t make contact with.

Hayun could hear Youngjae’s pencil scratching away and prepared herself for rejection. Tears pricked her eyes and threatened to fall when she felt the edge of the paper poke her in the back but when she looked at the paper, her slightly foggy from the tears she couldn’t read them but she could see Youngjae had only written six words.

Hayun blinked fast, allowing the tears to fall and unfogg her eyes. She read the words over and over making sure they were correct. As if Youngjae sensed her disbelief he leaned over to her and whispered the words into her ear.

“I have only love you, Hayun.”

Skip class and try to clear your head
Hayun needed to get out of there. The hot hallways of the school, crawling with students who were late and the stuffy classrooms full of different versions of the same brand of cologne just seemed too much for Hayun right now. She needed to clear her head.

That’s how she ended up in the hedge maze just near their school. Usually this was the place kids came to do explicit acts if they were feeling frisky, but today Hayun just wanted to find the bench in the eye of the maze so she could clear her mind. Somehow Hayun had been able to weave through the halls, ignoring Youngjae's and her teachers calls.

“Hayun?” A voice called from behind her. Hayun looked around, somehow she was already deep into the maze. Hayun jumped when she felt a strong hand touch her shoulder and she turned around to see Jaebum.

“Oh! Jaebum what are you doing out here?” Hayun asked, her heart jumping in her chest when he let out a small laugh and smiled slightly.

“I could ask you the same thing…” Jaebum sassed with a smile. Hayun smiled back, her anxiousness suddenly leaving her as she realised Jaebum wasn’t as bad as people told her. Jaebum wasn’t this bad boy figure at all, his smile was soft and his eyes warm.

“Things are just too complicated, I needed somewhere I could go to where I could just sit and rest for a bit.” Hayun explained, looking down at her feet in embarrassment.

The two had moved their conversation to the middle of the labyrinth where a small bench was located. The bench was so small Hayun felt like she was sitting more on Jaebum than beside him. Hayun looked up at Jaebum but regretted it immediately as she realised he had been looking at her the whole time. Both looked away quickly and Hayun felt her cheeks burn.

Suddenly Hayun felt pressure on her hand and she looked up to see that Jaebum was smiling again, holding Hayun’s hand up almost to display how he had control.

“Come with me~” Jaebum started to run through the maze, dragging Hayun behind him until they reached the entrance, where he let go of Hayun's hand and instead wrapped his muscular arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer.

“Jaebum-” Hayun felt herself blushing deeper and deeper as she realised what was happening. The taller boy just laughed and dragged her along with him, pulling her towards the nearest bus stop.

“Sometimes even sunshine needs a little break…”
