Chapter 9: Can't Do It.
The Most Beautiful Moment in Y(our) Life“I guess you don’t go out that much, huh?”
“U-uh, yeah. My mom doesn’t usually let me out on nights by myself,” Jungkook said as he stare at the sky, “I don’t know what made her let me today either,”
A light breeze passed by them, swishing Jungkook’s hair a little as he kept adoring the sight above him. The skies weren’t that pitch black—rather it was a nice, calming, deep navy blue with stars scattered over them twinkling like no tomorrow. The black-haired boy reached out to the sky, as if the distance between him and the stars weren’t that far. His eyes never left the sight, making the older boy in front of him pedalling the bike they rode together chuckle.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Hoseok says as he slow down his speed as they were turning, “You can’t get a sight like this in big cities like Seoul,”
“Yeah,” the younger smiled, “Not even a cloud is in the sky—this is amazing!”
“Welcome to Busan for you,” the older grinned, “Aren’t you going to ask me where are we going?”
“Oh yeah!” Jungkook facepalmed, which earned a laugh from the other boy, “I was going to ask you but I kind of forgot... so where are we going?”
“A place that I bet you’ll like it,” Hoseok replied as he began to catch up his speed again, “It’s not that far anymore,”
They keep on riding the bike until they finally arrived on a medium-sized skate park—it wasn’t that big, but it wasn’t small either. There weren’t many people there as they weren’t on a weekend, but still populated to say it was empty.
“Here we are,” Hoseok says, stopping at the edge of the park, “Go on. I’m going to lock the bike here first,”
Jungkook nodded as he stepped down from the backseat, scanning his eyes through the area. It was your typical skate park with some graffiti’s painted on the walls, but there were also a small basketball field with a pretty large space consisting benches and vending machines.
“Yo, Hobi~,” suddenly a boy much taller than him approached Hoseok, reaching out his hand for a high-five which was replied by the boy, “It’s been such a long time since you’re here! Who’s the boy here?”
“Yeah, you know, things happen,” he smiled at him and then patted at Jungkook’s head who’s pretty much confused about what’s happening in front of him, “This guy’s Jungkook! He’s a freshman at my school.”
“Hey, Jungkook!” the boy grinned at him and reached his hand for a handshake, “I’m Jongin. I’m this guy’s best friend! We used to be in the same middle school.”
“Nice to meet you, Jongin-sunbaenim,” Jungkook flashed a smile at him which was returned nicely.
“Jongin is the field occupied?” Hoseok says as he took off his hoodie and tied it around his waist. Jongin shook his head for an answer.
“Nope. Altough Namjoon and his guys were there before, but they left an hour ago. The rest of us are just skating,” the boy says. Jungkook’s eyes perked up at the name, “Namjoon?”
“Yeah, a scary guy with a bunch of scary friends too. But hey!” Jongin patted Hoseok’s shoulder, “He used to be this guy’s friend!”
“Hush, Jongin, stop saying strange things to him!” the older boy took a basketball from a box beside the park’s gate, “Come on Jungkook, follow me! Jongin you wanna go?”
“Nah,” he shrugged his shoulders, “Gotta practice some tricks. The team apparently made a bet with the neighbouring team that we’ll pay for their drinks for a week,”
“Well okay then,” Hoseok gave him a smile before he walked away, “Just come if you want, okay?”
“Gotcha. See you later, Hobi! You too Jungkook!”
As Hoseok waved him away, he then turned to the younger boy and gave him a smile too, “Let’s go!”
“What are we going to do, hyung?” Jungkook said as he followed the boy pass the skate park, “Skating?”
“Well we’re going to play this thing,” Hoseok nudged him the ball and stopped at the basketball field, “In this place,”
A sense of nostalgia washed over Jungkook. Street basketball—he used to play it a lot with his brother and his friends. They would play until night, until they were all exhausted and accept challenges from other teams or just simply showing off their tricks.
“You want to play basketball, hyung?”
“Yeah.”
“...Why me?”
“Don’t you like basketball?” Hoseok says as he dribbled the ball, walking to the ring and shot the ball. The younger boy moved closer to him.
“Yeah, I do like them,”
“So what reason do I need more?” the older boy grinned and passed the ball to him, “Let’s play!”
Even though Jungkook was suspicious about Hoseok’s action, he couldn’t just said no to basketball.
“Okay!”
“Here,” Hoseok puts a can of energy drink in front of him, “My treat.”
“You don’t have too, hyung!”
The older boy just grinned, “But I wanted to.”
They were finally finished with their basketball session—with some of Hoseok’s friends finally joining in which Jungkook found them interesting. It goes on untik a little more than a half and an hour, then they decided that it was enough. Right now, Hoseok has taken him to a convenience store close to his housing area, eating ramyun and just night-snacking.
“How was it?” Hoseok grinned as he opened his chopsticks, Jungkook already dawned his bowl first, “Pretty fun right?”
“Yeah!” he replied ecstatically, “Chanyeol-sunbaenim was really good! And Tao-sunbaenim too! Like, they could dunk! I ‘ve never seen someone dunk right in front of my eyes!”
Hoseok chuckled as he took a bite of his own too, “Of course, Kris and Tao were on their university team,”
“That’s so cool! I’ve always wanted to be in an official team!” suddenly the spark in the boy’s eyes began to falter, making him smile bitterly, “But I never had the chance...,”
“Why? You do really good, though! You could pass as a team member!”
Jungkook pursed his lips, contemplating about telling the older about his brother or not. But he doesn’t like keeping secrets, moreover Hoseok has been so nice to him.
He decided to go with it anyway.
“My brother... passed away before it could happen and we have to move,” he took a bite of his ramyun. Hoseok grew silent.
“I’m really sorry to hear that,” he frowned, “I must have brought your memories back,”
“Nah, it’s okay hyung.” Jungkook tried to smile at the older, “It doesn’t matter anymore anyway.”
“Okay then,” Hoseok smiled back, “Does he play too?”
Jungkook nodded, “He was much better than me,”
“No wonder you’re good then—it’s in the gen!”
