After spending half of his week end on the phone trying to issue a warrant, they finally got the chess board with the message to be sent to the precinct for examination. That’s why, when he arrived at work, Eunhyuk couldn’t hold his excitement. But soon his good mood was crushed by the only person that enjoyed ruining his day.

“How dare you?! Didn’t you hear Kangin when he said we are working together on this? If you find something you have to tell me immediately!”

Eunhyuk shut his eyes close and counted to ten, trying not to snap at Heechul.

“You’re correct we are working on this together, so did you share your infos with me?”

Heechul fell silent immediately.

“Didn’t think so!” Eunhyuk said, ignoring him and taking the stairs to go to the NP.

He didn’t have time to lose with Heechul and his tantrums.

When he got downstairs, the room looked as dark as always. He looked around; no one was there yet, since it was still pretty early, at the exception of Kyuhyun.

“Do you ever leave here?” Eunhyuk asked, startling the poor young guy.

“Gosh! At least announce yourself or something, before you come in and give me a heart attack!”

“Sorry princess, did I disturb you?” he said in a mocking tone.

Kyuhyun threw him a dark glance and Eunhyuk couldn’t help but smile. In all the crazy people in their department, he had to admit he always had a special like to Kyuhyun. This guy not only was a super genius and a mad hacker skilled, but also he had the kind of personality and humor that Eunhyuk appreciated in people.

“What brings you here, detective douche?”

The thin men ignored the insult. “Special delivery for Zhoumi.” he said waving the plastic bag with the chess board.

“Oh great! He was starting to get bored these days.”

“I think you’re the only one who ever see him in real life.” the detective commented.

“What can I say? My charms are irresistible.” Kyuhyun said with a smirk.

The detective couldn’t help but laugh at how the young boy was cocky. He handed the evidence to the hacker, silently praying that Zhoumi would find some clue on it. He was going back up when he turned to Kyuhyun.

“Be sure not to lose that! It’s really important. And tell me when Lee Donghae is here.”

“Seriously, hyung, what’s your problem with that guy?

“As you said before, it’s hard to fight against love at first sight.”

Kyuhyun rolled his eyes, and Eunhyuk went up, proud of his wit. He went back to his desk with his partner and started working. Actually, his joke with Kyuhyun made him think about the brunet analyst… Why was he so sure that he had anything do to with the present case? Was it to explain this weird attraction? Because even if Eunhyuk would never admit it out loud, he had at least admitted to himself that he was drawn to Donghae, like a morbid curiosity. He wanted to know more about him, and he wanted to be close to him, but he had no idea how to do that…

The man was lost in deep reflection when suddenly he felt something soft hit his head. His partner had just thrown him a paper ball.

“Lee Donghae is here, Kyu just sent me a message.”

Eunhyuk didn’t even notice the time passing, it just flew by. He got up.

“Alright, let’s do this.”

***

“Siwon you should go back.” Kangin said.

“I’m not going anywhere!” he turned to the thin man. “Hyukjae, you think it’s him?” he asked with a trembling voice.

The detective was incapable of answering him because he honestly had no idea. The last time he had seen a quote from Faust it was on his sister’s dead body… No actually there was another time too. The chess board he just found at the victim’s house had the exact same word on it, and the only other person to know about it was Donghae… Could it him who sent it? Was he toying with Eunhyuk? With a nonchalant movement, he closed the paper box on the nails.

“We should focus on finding the body from which the nails are from.” Heechul suddenly said. “And if we find the body…”

“We’ll be able to know if it was your wife’s killer of not.” Hangeng completed.

That seemed to calm Siwon down a little bit, but he obviously still seemed in shock.

“Hyuk?”

Eunhyuk couldn’t bring himself to say a word… And there was someone else who hadn’t spoked. The detective looked up from the box and saw Donghae staring back at him. The analyst didn’t vert his eyes, and they stared like this for a moment. Eunhyuk tried to figure Donghae out, to read it in his eyes, but all he could see was compassion. The thought that those eyes couldn’t possibly be from a killer, crossed his mind. But he couldn’t be sure… and anyway he didn’t need any pity from this guy. Finally snapping out of it, he took the box and put it on Heechul’s hands, who let out a surprised scream.

“I’ll let you guys find the victim then. Who found the package?”

“Henry found it on the porch.”

“Call him here.” then he turned to Siwon. “Won, go home for now, I’ll call you later.”

Reluctantly, the lawyer nodded and went out followed by Sungmin, who went to bring Henry. On the other hand Heechul threw the box to his partner, his face deformed by disgust. Because even if the platinum blond detective liked to play tough, he actually couldn’t handle even a little drop of blood.

“Since when are you the one giving the orders?” he complained.

“Calm down, Chul.” Kangin said. “He is actually right, go bring the box to Zhoumi and tell me if he ever gets something from it.”

Heechul was going to add something but Hangeng quickly pulled him out of the room. At the same time Sungmin came back with the young officer.

“I’m sorry sunbae! I swear I didn’t know what it was!”

The boy started justifying himself and apologizing.

“Breath, Henry! No one’s here to scold you.” Sungmin said.

He let out a long sigh, relieved. Eunhyuk was dying to interrogate him but he was conscious that Donghae was still in the room and if he was connected to the murders… He looked again at Donghae and finally something convinced Eunhyuk and decided that it didn’t matter anymore. The analyst here or elsewhere, if he was the killer or not, all of this was not important. He would figure everything out sooner or later, anyway…

“Tell me exactly, step by step, how you found the package.” he told Henry.

“I don’t really know… I was going out to do my shift when I saw a shadow, I went to see what it was and found this.” the boy said.

“You mean that someone put it there? That means the killer came here?!” Sungmin exclaimed.

Eunhyuk already thought so… If it was either his sister’s killer or the checkmate killer, he would’ve wanted to send the message to Eunhyuk personally.

“You said it was in the parking lot, right?” Kangin then suddenly turned to Donghae. “Go ask Kyuhyun if you can find anything on the surveillance cameras.”

Donghae didn’t move, still staring at Eunhyuk, when this one did an almost imperceptible head move, telling him to go. Then like a good soldier, the analyst left the room. The detective didn’t know why the man listened to him, but one thing was sure, something between them changed at that moment. Finally after taking Henry’s deposition, the boy went away leaving just Kangin, Eunhyuk and his partner in the room. Kangin sat on his leather chair, sighing.

“All of this is really messed up.”

“Is it all they found?” Eunhyuk asked.

“What do you mean?” Sungmin frowned. “You want more than a box with human fingers?”

“No I mean other than this message.”

Kangin and Sungmin exchanged a glance and Eunhyuk knew he was right.

“We found another paper attached to the package but it was blank.”

“Can I see it?”

Kangin handed the white paper to him and instead of looking at it, the thin detective immediately brought it to his nose. Again his thoughts were right. Lemon… it smelled like lemon. With only a glance, Sungmin understood wha

Chapter 44: I know i always love detective and medical examinator stories, but i never read one before! I usually watch tv series. But i have to say this one is totally mind blowing! All the complicated relations, and the twist?!! I couldnt stop reading it from chapter 1 to the last.. it's really addicting. Glad i found it when it was already completed lol.

Anyway, i suspected the classic killer to be one of the killers from the beginning. Or at least he had something to do with the murders. But the plot twist was really something! I didnt expect the other one to be the checkmate killer until one chapter before the reveal.

Eunhae's love was not the main focus while i read it, but it took a huge role to the twist. And i liked their love for each other here. You really wrote such an amazing story! Thank you for writing this <3
