Prologue
(ED. C4) SEIJIRA ACADEMY 세이지라 아카데미When I was five, I walked in a bread store hand-in-hand with my mom. I remember feeling happy and contented after having spent a day well at the park, just playing with the other kids and flying a kite for the first time. It was only on our way home that we found the store by the corner of the street. As mom was paying at the counter, I was left looking outside. Suddenly, an old woman caught sight of me, stopped in her tracks and smiled. Back then, I didn’t know that you weren’t supposed to talk to strangers. So, when she walked inside the store and asked for my name, I didn’t hesitate in the slightest bit.
“Mi Yeon,” I said. “Lee Mi Yeon.”
“I see,” she said. The way she spoke was not threatening at all. It was calm and soothing, and she was smiling at me all that while. Her eyes were alert. She looked at me knowingly as though she figured out something I haven't. On top of that, she was wearing a baggy gray dress under her faded green coat as though people wear them normally. In my head, I speculated that the old woman was not just some common office person. I knew because she’s not even carrying a bag like my mom always does.
What she did next surprised me. She went down on her knee, took my hand in her grasp and said, “It’s an honor to meet you.”
