Your Own Little Fairy Tale
I Fell in Love with My Best Friend
“Maybe I do!” he furiously shot back. Somehow, those three simple words pierced my flesh and heart like thousands of bullets travelling at maximum velocity. My breath hitched as my asthma threatened to attack again. My jaw dropped as I struggled to comprehend each word of his laconic claim. My eyes twitched while shameless tears continued to form in them. My lips quivered while I racked my brain for the right words to say at the moment. Do I congratulate him, since the female lead of his love story returned his feelings at the same extent - if not at a higher intensity? Do I accuse him for siding with my enemy? I couldn’t bring myself to do either. I simply gave up.
“You know what, Kris? Forget it. Forget everything. Forget our friendship. Forget our promises. If you don’t want me here, I’ll find my own place, because I’m done dealing with all your crap. If you don’t want to believe me, then don’t. I don’t need it anymore. I was so hurt when you didn’t even believe me a bit. And what’s worse is that you never wanted to hear my side of the story. I guess you just don’t care anymore. Well, then I could care less, too. If you don’t appreciate our friendship, why should I?” I dryly chuckled. “I had enough, Kris Wu. I’m done. Whatever you do now, it’s no longer any of my business.”
Before hearing his reply, I bolted for the door. Before exiting, however, I delivered the closing statement of my defense argument, “I wish you and your Xinyi the best of luck. May your love story have the happiest ending of all.” I never knew that my own words could take a stab at my own heart and gut. Luhan and I had The Little Mermaid as our love story for a brief period of time. For some reason, I envied the love story that my enemy was about to have.
