Goodbye Cali Goodbye!

Midnight Kiss

Ch 1- Good-bye Cali Good-bye. Hello Hello, Korea!

“Jin Jin!”

I turned around to find my friend Minah running towards me, calling out her nickname for me, embracing me in a big hug. Basically, she was suffocating me like a boa constrictor around a poor baby mouse.

(Minah from Girl's Day)

“Do you really have to go to Korea? I mean, you could stay here in Los Angeles and party with me! Plus, Kai might be there,” Minah nudged me playfully, grinning like a complete idiot.

(Kai from EXO)

I just laughed and placed a loose strand of black hair behind my ear, “You know I really really REALLY want to stay. But my mom insists that I see my dad,”

“Aw,” Minah pouted, “That's no fun! You hate your dad anyway right? So what's the point in going?”

“I don't hate my dad,” I protested. Minah glared at me. Her glare was starting like daggers. I uneasily tugged at my comfortable oversized sweatshirt.

(Your Outfit excluding the earmuffs)

Cute & stylish yet comfortable. I wasn't like the other Cali girls who dress up where ever they go. I like to dress up, but being comfortable comes first, especially if you were going to be in a plane for 12 hours. Seriously, I could've sworn I swear I saw some lady have a full out, long, elegant dress and glittered/bedazzled by diamonds stilettos. Sure I understand wanting to look good, but seriously...YOU'RE AT AN AIRPORT. I would hate to wear that for the flight...

“What? I don't hate him! I just don't know him that well,” I crossed my arms and put my sun glasses on. Yes, I know. Why where sunglasses in the middle of winter. Well, lately it hasn't been cold and surprisingly, we haven't had a single snow day in school. , I know. But, now we get to soak up the sun in winter. Putting on the sunglasses was my only to attempt to avoid eye contact with Minah. She always knew when I lied.

Minah shook her head, “Oh come on Jin Ae! I would so hate my dad if he left my mom & I when she was pregnant at 17. Plus, he never really seemed to care about you until now. Wasn't he kinda M.I.A practically all of your life? This mysterious dad of your was probably in hiding or some-”

“I get it Minah! Yes, I know my dad hasn't been there & yes, I haven't even met him before. But I can't claim he's really a bad guy unless I get his side of the story,” I responded calmly to her.

“Didn't your mom say that he left her for a Korean actress?”

“Yeah, but I know my mom's lying. One night I caught her after going to the bar with her friends and of course she was drunk like no other. She was crying like crazy, telling me she's sorry for not being a good mother, for always having to lie about my dad, etc. My mom doesn't remember anything she said, but it bugged me. I really wanted to know more about my dad.” I explained.

Minah huffed, “Well fine. Geez, could you just call your dad and talk to him? I don't wanna be alone at Victoria's party without my best friend to party the night away. I imagined us partying and celebrating 2012 when the clock struck midnight!”

“Sorry, I promise you when I come back I'll throw a party at my house,” I gave her the puppy eyes.

She struggled to fight it and finally gave in, “Fine! But I get to pick out the song playlist, DJ, and I'm in charge of the guest list,”

“Deal!!” We pinky promised and I grabbed my luggage

and entered through the gate, giving the assistant my ticket. I waved good-bye to Minah as I sauntered down the walkway which would lead me to my destiny.

When I was finally comfortably seated in the plane I glanced out the small window. As we took off I watched the city I grew up in, my safe sanctuary, slowly disappear to be replaced by the blue sky and it's clouds. It was perfect, like my kingdom pulled out from a fairytale. Like Cinderella, my story wasn't the happiest of them all.

Either way, Good-bye Cali. I'll miss you.

*             *              *             *

I strolled out of the plane with my hot pink luggage following after me. I watched as the mass of people tumbled out of the plane, hustling quickly, looking for their friends and families that held welcoming signs.

Suddenly I spotted my name on a rather large bright pink poster board with neon green letters.

Lee Jin Ae.

Holding the sign was a man in a classy business suit, with two assistants helping him. He was tall, had black hair, and looked around his late twenties.

I approached him slowly and gave him a weak smile, “Are you my dad?”

His bright white teeth smiled back at me, “Yes I am Jin Ae,”

“But you look around your twenties...My dad is suppose to be 38,” I answered.

“Well when you have the money you can look as young as you need to,” He smiled. So far I seriously don't like him. He gave off that boring lawyer feel and he made it sound like money is the only thing that helps you survive in this world.

I made a face, making sure he didn't see I stated, “Well can we go home now?”

He nodded. The assistant offered to take my luggage, but I told him that I could handle it. When we reached the parking lot a limo pulled up, but since I grew up in California it really wasn't anything new to me. But man was I happy to see something that reminded me of home. However, it wasn't just any limousine, it was a Ferrari Limo.

“So Jin Ae,” My dad started, “You're sixteen right?”

“Yup,”

“You look just like your mother,” He smiled, but with some sadness in his eyes.

“I guess,” Was all I answered. I got that all the time. People always complimented me about how I look just like my mother. My mother was definitely beautiful, but I, on the other hand, was rather ordinary and plain. My mother always had an aura about her that made people gravitate towards her. I liked to stay away from crowds, because when you have famous parents, people leech all over you for their own gain. I grew up never having real friends besides Minah. Everyone would only talk to me for fame, fortune, or pictures of my mom. My past boyfriends would always date me just to see my mom. She's a beautiful model and all.

“So,” I stared at him, “Where am I gonna be staying?”

“I bought a house for you.” He answered calmly.

“A HOUSE?!” I looked at him like he was psychotic, “You could have gotten me an apartment room instead.”

“Yeah I could have, but I want what is best for my daughter,” He actually looked like he was sincerely trying to get me to like him, but throwing your money around doesn't impress me at all.

I sighed, “You don't have to spend your money on me. I don't really wanna owe you anything,”

“No, you don't have to pay for anything. I just want to make up for all the times I wasn't there for you,” When he said these words something inside of me snapped.

“You want to make up for the times you weren't there for me?!” I yelled, “Then explain to me dad, why weren't you ever there for me?” I felt my voice cut and sting like venom.

“I couldn't help it. Not seeing you was for your own good,” He tried to tell me.

“For my own good? When is it ever good for a daughter to grow up knowing that her father is still out there, keeps in contact with her mom, but never shows his face to the struggling family. You left mom when she was pregnant at seventeen. Honestly, it was illegal too because you were twenty-one when it happened!” I screaming as the anger grew inside of me.

I always use to tell Minah that I never hated my dad. That I didn't hate him because I didn't know his side of the story. I kept telling myself that over and over again so that it would seem true. However, I was just in denial, trying to keep my feelings from overflowing. But just seeing him made all that built up angry finally explode.

Suddenly it hit. What did I just say? I looked up at my dad, scared to see his expression. To my surprise, I didn't see an angry face nor did I see him crying. Rather his face was stone stiff, with no expression.

“Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry I didn't mean any of that,” I quickly apologized at my sudden out burst.

“No, Jin Aw, its okay. I'm glad you were able to tell me how you feel about all of this,” My dad stated calmly.

“I'm so-” I began again.

“Seriously, dear don't be. Thank you for speaking up, it gives me somethings to think about.”

For the rest of the car ride it was complete silence. I sat there with my hands on my lap, twiddling my fingers.

Gosh Jin Ae. Your so stupid! Why did you have to yell at your dad. I mean you barely know the guy. What right did you have to scream at him?

The guilt was seriously eating my up inside.

Suddenly, a hand was waving in front of my face.

“Jin Ae dear. You're home,” My dad was smiling at me.

I hopped out of the car.

“Oh. My. God.!” I screamed as I looked at the giant mansion. It was beautiful.

“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” Before I realized it I was hugging my dad, completely suffocating him in a bear hug.

“Oh I'm sorry!” I bowed as I let go, completely embarrassed.

He chuckled, his laugh, like a pleasant hum, rung throughout the air. “I'm just pleased you like it,”

I looked at the older man and noticed a sparkle in his eyes, his smile wider than it was earlier. I smiled. Maybe he wasn't as bad I thought he was.

As I dragged my luggage up to the door, I realized no one was following me. They were all heading back towards the limo.

“Dad, aren't you gonna be staying here too?” I asked, confused.

“I still have to go to work dear,” He said with sadness in his voice, “I'm sorry,”

“It's okay,” I smiled, “As long as you get home in time to celebrate New Years!”

He chuckled, “I'll try! Oh, and Jin Ae the rest of your luggage came in yesterday and we put them in your room. Also, some guests will be coming over later, please greet them when they get here,”

“O-Okay,” I said worriedly. How am I suppose to entertain the guests without my dad. I don't even know who they are. Or so I thought.
