It went well.
Really well.
Too well, even.In fact, it went so well that Hoseok literally pinched himself on four separate occasions to make sure he wasn’t dreaming or dead.
Risa had been so worried about him, asking him again and again if he was really okay with it, if he was really ready, and making sure he knew that she was totally okay if he needed more time. But he didn’t want to make her wait even longer. It had already been three years; plus, he was ready.
Only he wasn’t.
But in the best way.
She had invited over the kind elderly couple who had taken care of her while she was gone. They had been wanting to come to Korea to visit her for a while and were ecstatic to finally meeting the man Risa had waxed poetic about since her teenage years. Hoseok had accompanied Risa to the airport to pick them up and the rest was history.
They adored him. Even though Risa had told them about his gang years—with his consent, of course—they acted as if he’d never been the type of person who hurt others willingly, even eagerly. They had been learning Korean ever since Risa had stayed with them, so even the awkward language barrier he had expected was practically nonexistent.
They had stayed a week before continuing onto France in their efforts to “see the world.” Hoseok was surprisingly very sad to see them go.
They were like the adoptive parents he always wanted but never had.
Risa kept thanking him again and again, so much that he was annoyed, actually. It wasn’t that big a deal and definitely didn’t warrant so much of her gratitude. In fact, he was the one who was thankful to her for introducing the couple into his life. He wanted to do something for her, but every time he asked she would gape at him and shake her head, saying, “I don’t need anything, Hoseok! Honestly, just being with you is everything.”
Not that he didn’t agree, but.
He just wanted to do something nice for his girl. So with that in mind, he picked up the phone and dialed a number.
“Hyung!” Hoseok whined childishly, stomping his feet. “You have to let me do something! How else am I gonna learn?”
Jin looked at him blankly from where he was casually chopping up some vegetables. “I would if you knew how to do anything.”
“You’re supposed to teach me!”
“But you .” Hoseok gasped in indignation. “And I refuse to make or eat ugly food.”
“Ah, Hyung! I’m not that bad.” Hoseok pouted, fiddling with the ties on his apron as he stared grumpily at Jin’s speedy dicing. “Maybe I’ll just ask Noona—”
Thunk.
Hoseok froze in place, not daring to move even a centimeter as the large knife wobbled in the wall beside his head.
Or not, he thought faintly, his heart threatening to burst out of his chest in fright.
“Fine, I’ll teach you,” Jin muttered distastefully, motioning for Hoseok to retrieve the knife.
Hoseok sighed and stepped away to yank the weapon form the wall. “You can take a guy outta the gang, but ya can’t take the gangster outta the guy,” he grumbled under his breath.
“Get over here before I throw another knife at you,” Jin called out and Hoseok threw himself at the cutting board, for fear of losing his life.
Risa groaned and stretched, blinking her eyes open slowly and flinching away from the bright sunlight filtering in between the shutters. She frowned as she noticed a distinct lack of Hoseok beside her and sat up, rubbing her eyes and looking around for him.
“Hoseok?” she called out hoarsely, clearing . “Hoseok, where are you?”
“Coming!” he yelled back. She frowned in confusion and prepared to get out of bed, but then he appeared in the doorway, fretting over a tray of food.
“Wait, don’t get up! Stay in bed!” he instructed her as he slowly made his way towards her. He carefully set the breakfast tray down over her legs and stood back, beaming at her.
She glanced from him to the food and back. “What’s going on?”
“I made you breakfast!” he explained needlessly. “Go on, try it!”
Furrowing her eyebrows at him, she nonetheless picked up a spoon and scooped up some rice before dipping it into the bean sprout soup. She blew on it and lifted it to , eyes widening when she tasted it.
Hoseok watched her nervously. “So? How is it?”
Risa chewed and swallowed and looked at him in shock. “Hoseok. This is really good!”
“Oh, thank god!” He wilted onto the bed with a heavy sigh of relief. “It was worth all those hours of hell with Jin-hyung.”
Risa laughed as she spooned up some more and held it out to him. “Here, try it! It’s really good!”
Hoseok tried it and jumped up, affecting a superhero pose. “As expected! Jung Hoseok can do anything!”
Risa just shook her head and kept eating. “Is today a special occasion or something? It’s not our anniversary, and it’s neither of our birthdays…”
Hoseok grinned climbed back into his side of the bed. “Nope! Just thankful for you. Man, your bed hair is so cute.”
She glared playfully at him but allowed him to softly comb his fingers through her hair. “Thankful for me? Well, duh, but…”
Hoseok laughed and leaned forward to kiss the corner of , away a drop of soup. He smirked when she blushed, even though she should be used to his touchiness by now. “Well, aren’t you humble. I mean, I wanted to thank you for being in my life and introducing two of the nicest people in the world to me.”
She in a breath and dropped the spoon. “Hoseok.”
He smiled softly at her, holding her face in both hands now. “I’m sorry it took me so long to get over myself. If I had been ready sooner, we could’ve spent way more time with them already.”
“It’s okay, Hoseok, I know.”
“I know you know,” he teased, chuckling. “Just thank you for…everything, I guess. Now finish eating before it gets cold!”
She leaned in and pecked him on the lips before returning to her food. “Where’s your food? Eat some too!”
“Feed me. I wanna play with your hair.” He slid in behind her, cradling her between his legs.
“What are you, five?” She rolled her eyes, but dutifully filled the spoon for him, sighing blissfully as she leaned back and felt him surround her, felt his face dip into the side of her neck and his lips linger there.
Yes, this—this was happiness.
notes: Ugh. I'm dead. I'm so tired. I'm so done with school. I just - ugh. Life is too hard right now. I had a meltdown earlier and totally sobbed pathetically into my sweater. Yuck. I'm writing my stress away.
