“I can’t promise anything, Sera,” Lee Chan told his girlfriend of two years, “I have to go back home to see my father.”
She exhaled and put her forehead on his, “I know. It’s just wish that you could be certain.” He ran his fingers through her hair and kissed her forehead.
“I am certain that I will be back within a week, just not in three days.” He lifted up her chin, “Lighten up a little, okay?” She gave him a half smile and pulled him into a hug. He exhaled and broke away because a familiar buzz was heard, “Looks like my ride is here.” She furrowed her eyebrows and embraced him for one last time.
“Bye Chan,” she whispered softly and looked into his eyes with sincerity, “Have a good time over there with your dad, don’t worry about me.” He smiled and kissed her cheek.
“If I can’t be here on time,” he grasped her hand, “Happy Birthday, Sera.” He stepped out onto the pavement and got into the car. Through the windows they bided another farewell through their waves and eyes.
Moments became hours and hours became days. Then, suddenly it was the day. Sera’s birthday.
“Happy, Happy birthday!” Sera’s sister stormed into her bedroom and called out for the whole neighborhood to hear, “Guess whose birthday it is today!” She pounced on the bed, “Yours!”
Sera covered her sister’s face with one of her pillows, “You are being too noisy.” She sat up fast with her mane trailing behind her. She glanced around the room as if expecting more than just a wake-up call, “Is there anything else, Mae?”
Her sister ran her fingers through her hair, “No, why would there be. You are not that special. You are just turning 16.”
Sera blew a raspberry and got up from her bed, “You know, with an attitude like that I’m going to have to beat you up.”
Mae gasped and smacked her sister’s head, “May I remind you that I am four years older than you.” An audible groan was heard from Sera as she trudged to the bathroom. Turning on the light, she started to turn on the faucet. She washed her face and at the corner of her eye she saw a neon purple sticky note that read, “Good morning! You look lovely in the morning! – Chan” She took it off of the mirror and smiled as she brushed her teeth.
After rinsing up, she headed downstairs to eat breakfast. The windows were open and the curtains pulled back to reveal a beautiful evening. Her mother had set up the dining table with an American style breakfast: pancakes, bacon, and eggs.
“Wow, this looks really good!” She lifted up the plate of pancakes and found yet another note underneath, “Mhm, breakfast seems really tasty!” she read aloud with a chuckle to herself. The house
