Let's Take A Picture

One Picture

_____________________________________________________________

I couldn’t help but smile, as I saw Kris sitting in front of me with a smile on his lips. It wasn’t the biggest smile, but you could see it and that was the most important part of it.

He was sitting with a mug of coffee in front of him, which he rarely sipped to. I was sitting with a cup of hot chocolate; I mean what did you expect? I think I have explained my obsession with chocolate; I just can’t get enough of it.

We were in a shop I never had visited before. It was small and nice, with light floors and walls. It was almost the opposite of Coffee & Cream, which were in dark and low colors; this new shop was so light and colorful.

“It’s so nice hear,” I said and continued to look around. I probably looked like some kind of child, who visited Disney Land for the first time. It wasn’t just as overwhelming.

“Yeah,” he said and looked around like I just did. “My sister took me here, when we were younger. She used to take care of me”.

“I didn’t know you had a sister,” I said, for some kind of reason was his sister stuck in my head. I didn’t know if I was offended by the fact, that he didn’t tell me anything about her, I mean I didn’t tell him about my family either.  I mean, if I told him about them, he would probably run away as fast as he could.

“I have,” he said and smiled as he looked down at the coffee in front of him. “And sometimes she is a pain in the , trust me… Don’t get too close to that woman”.

I smiled over his words. He was the first person; I ever heard talking like that about their siblings in that way. If I had had any siblings, I wouldn’t call them that… or maybe I would, I mean I don’t have any so, I can’t relate to it.

“I think, I can decide that by myself,” I said and smiled, when he almost glared at me.

“Do what you want,” He said and leaned back on the chair and continued to look around. There only went a few moments, when we were attacked by the famous awkward silence. We were only sitting and looking around, avoiding any kind of eye contact.

I tried to find something to say, but it was like my brain wouldn’t allow it. Should I comment his blonde hair or should I tell him it was a nice café… again?

“Sooo,” I said and leaned back on the chair. “Can I see some of your pictures?”

“Pictures?” He asked and looked up and then down at the bag beside him. “Sure”.

He immediately grabbed the bag and placed it on his lap, as he carefully began to pick up the camera. He quickly looked at it, before he reached it over the table, where I grabbed it. It was the same as the one I had.

It made me think about, how rich he was! I mean, he gave me a camera, when mine was destroyed and now he had one himself. What was the next he got? A car, maybe? Who knows?

I the camera and saw the first picture, which was a picture of the snow outside. It wasn’t on the field, but in some kind of garden, with a lot of bushes and tall trees. It was a really good picture. The sun, which you almost could see behind the skies, was on the right spot, and the skies… were just grey. In the end, it was a good picture.

I skipped to the next pictures. You could see that the camera were new, because there weren’t so many pictures and the pictures there were, were only winter pictures.

“They are good,” I said and continued to look through the pictures, until a certain picture were shown. I gulped for a second before I carefully and almost unnoticeable looked up at Kris, who were looking out of the window, where snow had filled the streets once again.

I recognized myself on the picture. It was taken in front of the school gate; I was standing beside MiYoung and Luna, obviously waiting for something. It was before the snow had fallen and of course before MiYoung and I became “enemies”.

I quickly skipped to the next picture and pretended I hadn’t seen it.

With flushed cheeks, I returned the camera and looked down at the cacao in front of me. Had it always been so… brown and creamy?

“I thought we were even, if I took a picture of you,” He suddenly said and gained all of my attention. “You take pictures of me, without my approval. It’s only fair I do the same”.

An awkward and almost embarrassed smile ran over my lips as I looked up at the ceiling.

“To my own defense,” I started and looked back down at him, “I was ordered to take the picture; I didn’t do it by myself”.

“I would say that too,” He said and looked at me with a huge smile on his lips.

“You don’t believe me?!” I almost yelled and stood up from the table. “Give me a reason for, why I should take a picture of you”.

He laughed again and was about to say something, when my phone suddenly started to ring. It was sliding across the table, and was almost on the edge of falling off the table. I quickly grabbed it, and saw it was Luna who was calling.

“Sorry, I need to take this,” I said and placed the phone by my ear. “Hi Luna”.

Hi Nana,” She said with a kind of worried voice.

“Are you alright?” I asked and looked up at Kris, who had reacted to my words. He had the same look in the eyes, like I had. “You don’t sound too good”.

“Uhm… It’s just…” She stopped for a second and took a deep breath before she continued again: “I swear I didn’t know anything about it until… Uhm… You should check Facebook”.

“Alright,” I said and bit uncertain. “Uhm… I’ll check…. Bye”.

“Bye,”

With those last words, she hung up. I looked down at my phone and placed it on the desk beside me. I knew that I had “promised” Luna that I would check it now, but I honestly couldn’t do it, because Kris was sitting in front of me. It would be rude, if I turned all of my attention to my phone.

“Is everything alright?” He asked and looked at me with a worried look. He almost glared, but I had gotten used to it, he always looked like someone who would pull your soul out of your body.

“Its fine,” I said as I felt my curiosity growing bigger. “It was just Luna, who wanted me to check something out”.

Kris crossed his arms and leaned back on the chair once again. It was a strange habit he had; leaning back on the chair like it never could fall back and hit the floor.

“Are you sure?” He asked and suddenly looked like an adult, who wanted to lecture his child. “You sounded a bit worried and beside, I wouldn’t mind if you checked it out”.

I couldn’t help but smile. It was nice to see, that he actually cared about what was happening.

“I will check it then,” I said and grabbed my phone again, and clicked on the Facebook app. After a short amount of time, I was on my profile, looking through the daily updates. There weren’t actually anything unusual or something there seemed suspicious.

I heard a chair move and looked up, only to see Kris had moved over beside me to look too. I tried to hide the smile there slowly was overtaking my lips, but my plan failed as I felt myself smile over the entire face.

I continued to scroll down, when something there made my eyes wide, popped up. I quickly hid the phone under the table and looked down at my hands, which were almost hidden under the table.

I slowly looked up, at Kris, who slowly grabbed my wrists with one hand and pulled my hands out under from the table.

“I don’t think, you want to see it,” I said and tried to pull away from him, but he was funny enough stronger than me…

“I already have seen it,” he just said and looked at the screen.

It was simply just a picture of me. It wasn’t even because there was photoshopped any thing into the picture, it was just me lying in a bed… wearing nothing more than my underwear and a grey shirt which luckily covered the most of my . My thighs were exposed and the same were the top of my bra. It almost looked like I was some kind of lingerie model or port star.

Of course the picture made my cheeks flush and my heart beat faster, but it was the comments which were the worst: , , , Tramp, Hooker, Call Girl etc.

After a few seconds, I quickly pulled the phone away again and stopped it in my pocket, where no one could see it or the picture.

“I… I, think I should go home,” I said and looked up, at Kris. I tried everything to prevent the tears from falling. It was a hard task, since my eyes already were blurry.

Kris nodded and stood up from the chair. He quickly found some money and placed them on the table, before we left.

The snow was still falling and it didn’t make it any better at all. I felt like running away from everything, I can’t describe how embarrassing and humiliating the picture was, and now it was on the internet where everyone could see it.

I even remembered the day it was taken. It was a sleepover MiYoung and I held. She had taken it out of fun, and of course I didn’t get mad at her or anything, because she had promised that it would be our little secret. I honestly thought she had deleted it years ago, but I was obviously wrong.

We reached the bookstore, when I noticed that something heavy was placed on my shoulders. Carefully I looked to the side, only to see Kris’ arm. I must have spaced out since I didn’t notice he put it there.

“Thank you for following me home,” I said and slowly walked over in front of him. One thing had changed; I couldn’t look into his eyes any longer. I feared what he was thinking, was he thinking that I was cheap or a or something like that? Did he hate me?!

“You’re welcome,” He said and quickly looked up into the skies. “Listen Nana, that picture, it was nothing. Those people, who called you all of those things are just stupid and has no self-respect. Don’t let I bother you, okay?”

For some kind of reason, my heart started to beat faster as I slowly looked up.

“Thank you,” I said and threw the arms around myself. “I’ll try to ignore it… And thank you for a nice day, I’ll see you tomorrow”.

He nodded once before he turned around and started to walk away. I took one last deep breath, before I walked inside, where I could be alone and flee from the world, who now had seen everything…
