Wish You Were Not Here

Jung Yunho

I glanced at my watch again. It was almost fifteen minutes since I came here. I was waiting for Go Ara to dress. We were going to a big dinner which would be held at a hotel. It was actually a dinner amongst the chaebols for us to socialise with others. I had no problems with it because I always could claim new projects and secure new relationships in gatherings like this. Changmin would also be in there because Grandma told him so. Haish. I wished he couldn't come. I wished he would just lie and skip the gatherings.

After the incident, I didn't talk with Changmin at all. He was being a recluse and obediently did his work and attended meetings with focused look on his face. Something happened to him and I didn't know what. I wanted to know, of course but there's no way in hell I would ask about it. I suspected it could have something to do with the kid but I pushed the thoughts away.

Changmin could never be that concerned with someone. He couldn't give his precious time to someone else other than Grandma, and that was even because of he was indebted with Grandma.

I looked at my watch again and sighed silently. How long can a girl take to dress up?

Suddenly I heard her footsteps. I lifted my head and saw her coming down with ruby red dress that wrapped his perfectly toned body. Her figure was something every guy would drool for. I quickly rose up to my feet and smiled to her. Well, if whatever it was worth the wait. I offered my arm and she happily linked hers to mine. We walked to our car and off we drove there.

We arrived about fifteen minutes later. She was so stunningly beautiful that she attracted almost every pair of man's eyes that attended the party. I put a hand behind her waist just to remind everyone that she's my partner tonight.

Why this particular night?

She wasn't my girlfriend for a fact. She was a good friend of mine and the chemistry was there. Both of us didn't want to further our relationship more because we didn't want the original relationship between us falter if anything bad happened. I knew that it seemed like bull and we should care more about our feelings but I didn't want to be heartbroken later. She knew I still wasn't up to a steady relationship, but she was always up to it and she refused to wait for me to change my mind.

Well, she would rather be with someone who loves her so much, not me. I couldn't give my all to her, not yet and I didn't think I could in nearest time.

We went to a crowd of wealthy entrepreneurs and their partners. Almost all of them were in their forties, and I happened to like to mingle in this age group than in younger ones. There were also a bunch of young chaebols here but most of them were not matured enough to be here. They looked raw and arrogant for those who just graduated from overseas universities. I looked over the food and took a glass of alcohol and drank it. Go Ara was talking with a couple who was interested in her company. She was a promising director in her family's company and she did her job splendidly. I looked over the crowd, absentmindedly searching for Changmin. He was nowhere to be found. I looked at the grand staircase that was situated in the middle of the hall, which ascended to another hall with a rich interior. That was when I spotted a young man walking down the stairs. He was ethereally beautiful with his fair skin and his trendy styled hair. I watched closely.

My heart plummeted to the bottom of my gut when I realised he was none other than Kim Jaejoong.

I watched as he made his way to the crowd. He was painfully handsome for someone that age, and the way his innocence face lured people to talk to him bugged me. Who was he actually?

First, I saw him entering a building that only rich people could afford. Now, he was here in the middle of chaebols' meeting?

He was really an heir to a rich company or else he wouldn't be here.

But why did he choose to work and not do anything about it when he was bullied by me and Changmin?

"Ladies and gentlemen," suddenly the MC took the microphone and everyone's attention averted to the stage. Mine too. "Today is a brilliant day for us to know each other,"

I looked around for Go Ara but in the same time my heart actually longed to talk again to the kid.

"And to celebrate and welcome a really good acquaintance of us who is a really successful businessman from our very own Jeju Island," the MC did a gesture to welcome someone up the stage. I extended my neck and saw an attractive man in his mid-forties walked to the stage. He was the definition of charisma as he absorbed the applause directed to him. He smiled his pearly white teeth. He took the microphone from the MC and spoke to it.

"Good evening, everyone." he said with a very confident voice. I could feel the atmosphere started to change when he took over the audience with his charm. His name was Kim Hyuk Tae, which did sound like someone who was very authoritative about his territory. He smiled and I could see that Go Ara (who was now standing beside me) was mesmerized by it. For an ahjussi, he was very handsome. I wondered by the way, he reminded me of someone.

I shoved the thoughts away when a president of a networking company started a conversation with me. I remembered him as someone who loves to kiss Grandma's quite too often.

"Do you know him?"

"Yes, of course." I knew but I didn't know much particular about him.

"I heard he has a son,"

"Oh." I watched him, oh God I wanted to kick him in the face because of how erted he look right now. Did he have to have that look when talking about someone else's son? I quickly brushed him off and went to talk to Kim Hyuk Tae who had done talking. I actually just wanted to get away from that man. I took another glass of wine and again I was searching for the kid. I accompanied Go Ara when I was bored to talk to a computer programmer who was also an heiress. Then, I noticed that Kim Hyuk Tae was standing alone there. He had done talking with the crowd and was texting something in his phone. I walked to him, and waited for him to lift his head.

I offered my hand and he noticed me. His eyes flickered when he saw me.

"Sir, my name is Jung Yunho,"

"Oh," his lips curled into a sinister smile. I wondered what that was for. "I heard about you."

"I hope you heard only about the good things," he laughed at my retort. "I wanted to say that I'm impressed with your company," he nodded, as if he knew what was going on in my head. It was like he had anticipated about this. "And I'm looking forward for our future friendship,"

"I'm looking forward to working together with a young star like you, Jung Yunho-ssi. I wished my son would be like you one day," I gave him a smile. I wondered if the smile looked genuine enough because I was so used in doing business like this that my smile had become fake. My heart however was at ease when he patted my shoulder and stared at me with his big brown eyes. The orbs were beautiful even with the wrinkles around them that showed he was a man with a lot of experiences, full of scars inside his heart and that he had lived with joy and sorrow laced together in his life.

"It was a pleasure to me, sir even though you shouldn't praise me like that. I still have a long way to go before I can get to where you are now." he laughed again. Then we proceeded to talk about his business and about my future plan in my own field. He was impressed I might say because a lot of times he would nod and praise me again. I was flattered but I should not let it make me snobbish.

We ended our conversation after a bunch of another old people came surrounding us. I bowed down to him and left to find a seat. I was exhausted and I lost Go Ara again. She really loves going to social functions like this. I found one at the food table. I sat down and sighed. Ahh...my feet felt relieved. I took another glass of wine and browsed the sushis that were arranged neatly. I took one and ate it. I don't always love sushi but this one was really nice. I was having the time of my life when I saw him again.

I watched as he savoured the sushi in his mouth and then drank the fruit juice. He was eating like a little child, like it had been so long since he had any decent meals. His face of satisfaction and the little smile that appeared after he his lips for residues were all intoxicating to watch. Maybe finally my aura arrived at him because he suddenly stopped eating and turned towards my direction. It was too late for me to pretend like I didn't know he was here because our eyes locked almost immediately. He put the last piece of sushi in his hand into his mouth and got up from his seat. I didn't want to lose sight of him so I chased after him. He went out of the hall and into the hallway.

"Jaejoong!" I shouted after him but he didn't stop. I quickened my pace and finally I grasped his tiny wrist and spun him around.

"What do you want?"

"Why are you here? What business do you have here?" I asked in one breath. He blinked for several times before he pushed me away from him.

"What the hell is wrong with you?"

"Are you rich? Why are you here with the rest of us?" he didn't answer. He grabbed his wrist free from my grasp and hugged himself. He glared at me and wanted to flee again but I put a hand on his left side. "Where do you want to go?"

"None of your business!" he looked as if he loathed me so much. "Why do you want to know?"

"I can't know about my dongsaeng?"

"Who's your dongsaeng?" he wanted to flee from the other side but I put a hand on his right making him stuck in the middle of my arms. "Go away!"

"Who's in power right now?" of course it was me, I'm taller and I'm stronger. "Come with me!"

"No!" I held his tiny wrist and dragged him, intending to talk with him outside. I didn't really have anything to talk about with him but I just wanted to speak with him, to have conversations with him and just listen to his voice. "Hey! Let me go!"

"You'll never going to talk to me kindly if I ask you too,"

"What?" he pulled his hand harshly. "Are you a e? Do you really do stuffs like this to young people like me?"

"I don't..."

"Are all Seoul men like this?" I turned around and roughly I pushed him to the wall again and trapped him there. I bent down and our faces were inches from each other.

"What did you say?" he glared back at me. Sure, he had courage. "Are you not from here? Don't ever generalise Seoul people..."

Then it hits me.

Did it mean he wasn't from here?

"Are you new here?"

"I..."

"Jaejoong!" both of us turned towards the familiar voice. My heart jumped when I realised it was Kim Hyuk Tae. I let go of Jaejoong immediately and he froze there. He didn't make any effort to go near the powerful man. I ran my hand through my hair and faked a smile. I glanced sideways to Jaejoong and saw how red his face was. He was biting his lips. "Are you having fun, Jaejoong?"

"Yes," he stood up straight but still in the same spot. I couldn't help but notice the sarcastic tone in his voice. Kim Hyuk Tae grimaced but didn't let it falter the awkward conversation.

"I see you met with this great young man already," I bowed my head when Kim Hyuk Tae gestured at my direction. "You see I was going to introduce him to you later, Jaejoong,"

"Whatever," Jaejoong mumbled and without further notice he walked away from us. I looked at Kim Hyuk Tae as he watched the kid strutted to the direction of the hall.

"He's difficult, that kid," Kim Hyuk Tae looked at me as though he was so exhausted. I wondered why he would know that kid. I was curious about their relationship. He smiled weakly as he patted my shoulder. "He had so much potential, now..." and he's talking to himself only loudly, so I didn't say anything. "...I wish he would be more like you,"

"No," I was flattered again even though I didn't know his true intention. "You praise me too much."

"No, really, I knew about you a lot." he insisted and immediately I tried to think if my company did any advertisement on me. "Well, since I came here people would tell me about young businessmen like you." he sighed. "I had always thought that one day I would entrust my son to someone who's reliable to train him."

"What are you trying to say? I'm sorry, but I didn't get what you're trying to convey,"

"Will you work with my son when he's ready?"

I looked at him, still wishing he would elaborate.

Then he laughed heartily.

"Don't you want it? Being close to me?" he asked, making me more confused.

"But your son..."

"You just met him." my heart stopped and I wondered how pale my face was. "Kim Jaejoong." my words were stuck at the back of my throat. That's it! That's why Kim Hyuk Tae's face reminded me of someone! "Why do you look like that? Have you met before?"

Oh yes, yes, we did!

But I just smiled at him like nothing's hurt. He flashed back his pearly white teeth at me. I would have never thought Kim Jaejoong was someone from our community. He was someone so humble; he even didn't say anything about his father was a very powerful businessman back in Jeju and now planning to take over the world over here. Even Grandma was impressed by this man's charisma and hard work. But what interest me more was the behaviour of the son.

I met Go Ara after that, and it looked like she had a little too much alcohol. She was still sane and aware of her surroundings but she told me she was sleepy and needed rest. I felt the need to bring her home when suddenly someone poked my shoulder. I turned around and saw Changmin smirking at me.

"Way to bring your drunken girlfriend to your home," he remarked making me scowl.

"What about you, you dirty skunk?"

"Hey, I just found out that you're actually here..."

"I was surprised that you're here. Are you in the right mind?" he laughed at my reply and shook his head. Did he know that the kid was here too? Did he know what I know?

"Well. What can I say?" suddenly his eyes caught something. "!" I spun and felt my body froze when I noticed Changmin had caught a glance at the kid. He dashed at him and without any notice at all, he was standing before the kid.

I was the one who was breathing really fast when I saw the kid lifted his head and the expression on his face changed. His colour on his face drained almost immediately. He took a step back when Changmin's lips broke into a smirk. He looked away only to make Changmin stood on his other side. He changed his position and this time Changmin wasn't patient enough. He held both the kid's shoulder and gazed directly into his eyes.

I let go of Go Ara and rushed towards them. I pulled Changmin away.

"What are you doing?" I hissed. Changmin scoffed.

"You should ask yourself that!" he pushed me. "Now piss off. This is between me and him,"

"What?" I glanced at the kid who was dressed handsomely tonight. He made my heart jumping and there's butterflies in my stomach too when I saw his innocent face.

But was he innocent if he kept making us cousins fight all the time?

"Is the bet still on?" Changmin sneered.

"No, of course not." I didn't want that stupid bet anymore.

"Then don't you know how to mind your own business?"

"I have my business here."

"I won the bet,"

"Bwoh?" Changmin nodded proudly. If only I could just punch him in the face and hit the light out of him. "Changmin, the bet was invalid."

"Who says?"

"Me. You. The bet was invalid,"

Both of us then turned towards the kid but he wasn't there. He took the chance to run away when we were arguing about him. I wished he could have stay and see how I'm protecting him from this evil person. We looked at each other and cursed because of course, we lost him again.

The next day, I went through the first three hours the usual way. It wasn't exhausting at all, and in fact it did make me forget about last night event. I tried to make myself distracted by looking for new projects and talking with Grandma to ask for her opinion. Changmin too was working hard. I noticed that since he was young. He would do his work really hard if he tried to think about something. He tended to make his mind occupied with a lot of things at the same time. I suspected he too was trying to figure out who the kid really was. But considering that he didn't say anything about Kim Hyuk Tae to me, I assumed he was still in the dark about Jaejoong's real identity. It sounded silly whenever I thought of it. It was like Jaejoong was some kind of superhero that had double identity and I'm one of the people who knew who he really was.

During lunch break, I didn't stay at work. I drove my car to a random place to eat. I was alone because I love my alone time. I was always surrounded by people that I got sick of it at times. I then decided to stop by SeungHyun's coffee shop in case I could get a beverage that the kid would make for me.

When I arrived, he wasn't there at the counter. His best friend wasn't there too but I had faith in them still working here. I took the place where it was most secluded and waited for a little time before I decided what I wanted for my lunch. I was quickly become edgy when I waited for five more minutes and only his best friend was there. He was receiving orders at the counter and making coffee and sometimes prepared doughnuts for the customer. I watched him for a while before SeungHyun spotted me.

"Hey," SeungHyun took a seat beside me. It's been a while since we'd met. "Buddy, how it's going?"

"Fine. Everything's just fine. How come I never seen you at Kim Hyuk Tae's party?"

"I was on vacation. Just got back last night."

"Oh."

"Are you looking for him?"

"Him?" of course but I wanted to keep it cool. It was kind of weird for someone my age seeking someone the kid's age without proper excuse.

"Well, you know. He quit."

"Bwoh? He quit?" I wanted to ask why but I was too dumbfounded.

"Yes. Don't you want to know why?" I gazed at SeungHyun and he smiled lightly like he wanted to avoid himself from thinking about an unpleasant thing.

"Did it have to do with me bullying him?" I wanted to rephrase. Me? No. It was us. Changmin and I.

"I don't know." SeungHyun gave me an accusing look. Well, he did blame me by it. I knew him too well to be so blind. "What do you think?"

"Fine, and I'm sorry..."

"He quit so that he could focus with college,"

"He's attending college?" I remembered last night and what his status really was. It had occurred to me that he had a high chance to continue his studies overseas. Kim Hyuk Tae seemed like the person who loves to give his son the best.

"Yes. University of Seoul,"

"Wow."

"On scholarship," SeungHyun added and he grinned. His behaviour reminded me of a proud father boasting about his favourite son.

"That was...impressive."

"Indeed."

"So, he won't work here anymore?"

"I don't think so." Such a waste, but somehow I felt quite proud of him even though I had no right to.

"What scholarship?"

"He didn't tell me. It was just as much as he could tell."

"Hm..."

"I told you to stay away from him,"

"I know." I bowed down, yes; I regretted making him leave like this. I wished we could have more things in common and have a good relationship. But everything just stayed inside my head. I wanted to spill them to the kid himself, but he just wouldn't listen. For him, I was just a monster and I wished I had treated him better.

We talked for a while before his best friend came to us and served us fruit juice. I looked at him and our eyes accidentally met. His gaze was quite taunting but I preferred to not take it too seriously. He walked away, and I couldn't help but watch his buttock. I blushed. Should I not...

"He's interesting, right?" SeungHyun suddenly broke my trance. "Junsu, interesting person with a cute personality,"

"Well..."

"He's good to the kid. He's very protective of Jaejoong."

"I can see it."

"He's going to college too." SeungHyun used the spoon to stir his orange juice. I could see the pulp at the bottom of the glass. Were they supposed to be there? SeungHyun took a large gulp. "I think they're taking the same course,"

"What course?"

"I don't know." he shrugged and he waved his hand to attract one of his workers. A girl waiter came and put a plate of peanuts. I looked at SeungHyun, a playful smile appeared on my lips. It lingered for a while when I watched SeungHyun popped the peanuts one by one into his mouth. His action was careful that if I didn't know him well, I would thought he grew up in a rich posh family. He was so meticulous even when he was walking or talking. He was cautious about what he was doing most of the time. I didn't notice since when he had picked this habit up but it was more prominent now that he had risen to a higher new position.

"Is he quitting? Junsu?"

"I don't know. Maybe not because he needs money,"

"He can work for me."

"You bastard. No, I won't let him work with predators like you."

"What?"

"I saw the way you watch his bum," SeungHyun laughed.

"No, no, no, no. It was for entertainment..."

"No, you didn't just say that his bum is for entertainment..."

"I didn't mean it that way!"

"What do you mean? Yunho-ah...did you like him for real?"

"SeungHyun, let's not talk about this, okay?"

"Okay. Suit yourself," and both of us fell into a fat silence. He was picking on his food in a very meticulous way, like he was scanning them for flaws. I stirred my juice and subconsciously my eyes travelled to the counter. Junsu was there diligently doing his work. He seemed bored. Maybe it was because the kid wasn't there. I felt guilty because I made the kid decided to quit even though it wasn't solely my fault.

I went back to the office. Changmin was nowhere to be found. Might be he was out visiting sites. I entered my office and sat on my chair. My secretary went in.

"What's up?"

"Kim Hyuk Tae came."

"Bwoh? Why didn't he...? Why did he come here?"

"He wanted to ask you a favour,"

"What is it?" my secretary walked out for a while and I heard her called someone. The door opened again from outside and I looked up.

My heart stopped when I saw him in front of me dressed smartly in a suit well-tailored for him. It was Jaejoong. He bowed down as I rose to my feet. My secretary stood beside him, and smiled at me.

"Jaejoong-ssi, this is our director. He will tell you everything that you need to know here,"

He looked up and saw me. His face turned pale. His legs moved a bit like he wanted to start to run but didn't. Our eyes met and I could hear the pulse pounding in my ears. God. How could this be a coincidence? He really didn't know he would be here?

a/n Hello. everyone! the story came out after two days, because i was having a writer's block! aah...can someone tell me what should i do if ever it happen to me again? well, i always got it.
