Picking up the pieces

Jaeha arrived on Sunday and they ate whatever was left in the house but on Monday, Jinyoung decided they needed to go buy food at the nearest supermarket to be able to have enough food to survive a week. He told Jaeha that Mark and he were not eating a lot, just mixed salads and a dessert, but for Jaeha, they were willing to eat more and to cook her delicious food. She insisted on saying she was fine eating the same things as them, but Jinyoung didn't let her the choice: he wanted to cook for her and nobody would stop him.

That was how they found themselves doing groceries shopping in a big supermarket where there weren't a lot of people considering it was Monday and a lot were working so Jinyoung didn't have to worry about going all anonymous and covered. For the week, he had decided no matter would they would do and where they would go, he wouldn't be Park Jinyoung the actor but only Park Jinyoung the dad and lover, nothing else. No autographs would be signed, no pictures with fans taken. His manager had a break week and Jinyoung had warned the CEO of his company he wouldn't answer any of his call: he didn't have to want anything to do with work while Jaeha was with him.

Mark was pushing the cart slowly through the shelves, following Jinyoung who was choosing all the products and thinking about what they could cook, and Jaeha was absent-mildly holding the cart with one hand. It was an old reflex she had from her younger days when Jaebum and Jinyoung insisted on her holding the cart and never letting go of it while doing shopping because they didn't want to loose her. Twenty years later, she was still doing it.

You like meat, right?” Jinyoung asked his daughter, “what kind of meat?”

Everything is fine, I'm not really picky.”

Beef? Mark and I like it but if you don't-”

Beef is my favorite, don't worry.”

Great,” Jinyoung smiled and chose the best pieces of meat he could find to put it into the half-full cart. “And what about vegetables? What should we eat?” Jaeha shrugged off and Mark copied her, not knowing what to answer. “Well... mom and dad brought us kimchi last week and we have lettuce in the garden... with the meat we can do wraps.”

Grand-pa and grand-ma came?”

Hum,” Jinyoung nodded, “I told them you were coming so they should be coming during the week-end, most probably on Saturday.”

Jaeha couldn't even figure out when was the last time she had seen her grand-parents. It had sure been more than a year, maybe two. They were living in Busan, on the complete opposite side of the country and Jaeha was never thinking of going to see them and they weren't often coming on Seoul either. A call on her birthday and on Christmas, that was all they shared. But it didn't mean Jaeha didn't love them or whatsoever, far from it! She loved them more than her dad's parents for example, at least they had accepted their son's ual orientation and his choice of partners and most of all, they had accepted Jaeha. The thought of seeing them again was a really good thing.

We can make sundubu jjigea too... Mark likes it a lot and the one he does is really delicious... I'm sure you'll like it Jae. And I know you like to make porridge, with octopus. You can do it for us.”

I'm not the best cook ever though...”

It doesn't matter, a love-filled dish is always the best.”

She opened to answer but no coherent words came out so she kept mum.

Oh! And there's that soup you also like a lot, I'm sure Mark hasn't taste it yet, we could also try that together. What's the name already? With spicy chicken and potatoes...”

Dakbokkeumtang?”

Oh that's it! That dish! Does it ring a bell, love?” Jinyoung asked Mark who shook his head, “then let's try to do that at least once.”

Since he didn't know all the ingredients for the dishes mentioned, he asked Jaeha to look for it on her phone and they wandered all around the place to find what they needed. However, when it came to fishes and sea food, Jinyoung decided they would buy it at the local market so that it would be fresh and tastier.

From the other people's point of view, those who didn't know who was Park Jinyoung, they would probably think they were a family. A real family. Two dads, their daughter, the three of them gathered to share a moment of their everyday life and to talk about futile things such as food.

Jaeha was conscious of this fact but she didn't mind. Somehow it even felt good. It was something foreign for her; she was used to go groceries shopping, for example she had gone with Youngjae not even a week ago, but never was her dad coming. They had their dad/daughter's days but it was only to buy clothes and to hang out together, it was not to plan something such as meals for their family. And while doing it again, especially with her father, she really enjoyed it though Jinyoung nor Mark could tell since she wasn't smiling whatsoever.

Even if she liked it, she still wasn't completely at ease yet stuck between her father and Mark. They had been together for two years when Jaeha hadn't been with Jinyoung for over ten years, and obviously they knew each other extremely well, maybe more than Jinyoung knew her. And although she knew her father had talked a lot about her to Mark, a child (even a grown-up one) was never part of their couple and her coming into their life after two years made her feel really awkward. She couldn't help thinking she wouldn't fit with them and wouldn't find her place; even when knowing they had accepted her presence and were extremely happy about her being with the two of them.

Maybe she would warm-up by the end of the week (she hoped she would) but for now, not even twenty-four hours after her arrival, she didn't feel completely alright. She was enjoying the moment but not everything that came with it and what would stay once it would be over.

If there's something you want just put it into the cart,” Mark told her, “you don't need to ask us.”

A-Alright,” she stuttered nervously, “I will.”

And since she couldn't find any watermelon ice-cream, she took vanilla ice-cream instead; it wasn't her favorite one but for a week, it would sure be enough.
