Word count: 2077

Genre: Fluff; AU where you and Minghao are in college and living together

Characters: You, Minghao, and Junhui

“Minghao, would you hurry up!” you cried from your bedroom as you put on your new earrings. They were a gift that you had promised only to wear on special occasions, but in your world, even something special didn’t usually require this much dressing up. Tonight was extra special.

When there was no answer, you tried again. “Minghao!”

Instead of Minghao, you got a reply from someone only a few marks off from him. Junhui popped his head through the doorway and said, “He can’t answer you. He tried to put on his bowtie and nearly choked himself.”

You chuckled as your roommate crossed his arms and entered the room you and Minghao shared. Looking you up and down, he gently smiled. “I’m impressed,” he declared, giving a supportive nod. “You clean up nicely.”

Smoothing out your hair, you shot him a quick look through the mirror. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“It was a compliment.” he pointed out.

Turning around, you smacked him on the chest with your clutch. “Not from you it isn’t.”

Junhui grinned and watched you, his best friend’s girlfriend, step out to look for your man. Sometimes Junhui wasn’t sure if it was alright to refer to you like that though. It didn’t seem totally fair since you and Minghao were together long before he and Minghao even met. Nevertheless, that’s who you were, and Junhui was thankful. You also made an excellent roommate.

You went down the short hall and quickly knocked on the bathroom door. “Ready, love?” you asked the boy sweating at his own reflection. His thin stature was impressively framed by his tuxedo, an outfit he had to rent for the night.

Able to pause his discomfort, Minghao smiled back at you. He spread his arms apart and looked down his chest. “Does this look right?”

You tilted your head to the left and tried to be as objective as possible, but that was just too hard to do staring at your boyfriend in such nice attire. “You look great,” you answered, coming over to adjust his collar.

Gently wrapping his arms around you, Minghao squeezed tight. “So do you.”

You stared into the pair of eyes you’d fallen in love with when people still told you you were just young and naive. It was just a phase and you’d grow out of him one day. But five years later, they were all proven wrong.

Bouncing on the balls of your feet to peck him on the lips, you quietly asked, “Ready to go?” Even in heels, you were much shorter than him.

“Yeah,” he said, “Let’s go.”

Taking his hand, you lead him out of the bathroom and towards the front door of the apartment. Seeing the way he moved so unnaturally in the tux made you laugh. “Minghao, can you try not to waddle?”

“Hey!” he laughed, straightening out the blazer. “We never get this fancy so excuse me for feeling a little uncomfortable.”

You scrunched your face and nodded in agreement. Looking down at your elegant, red gown, you pulled at the edges. “I know. I feel a little out of my skin, too.”

“But you still look fantastic in my favorite color,” Minghao reassured you. Holding open the door, he let your step out first. “It’ll be worth it though. We’ve tolerated each other for five years. We deserve to celebrate.”

You scoffed and rolled your eyes. “You’re a loser.”

Used to your loving insults, Minghao nodded. “And your tolerance is still impeccable.” With a laugh, he called back to Junhui, “Don’t wait up! Who knows when we’ll be home.”

Junhui came to the front and saw you two out. Leaning on the door frame, he laughed, “You guys have fun!”

“Bye, Junhui!” you said with a wave.

He smiled and shut the door.

Within the next half an hour, you and Minghao were walking up to the fanciest, most expensive restaurant either of you had ever been to. A few weeks back, when you both were trying to figure out what to do for your anniversary, many people recommended the place, saying it was perfect for something that important. But as you were making your way in, you found it necessary to stay as close to Minghao as possible, afraid that if you didn’t you’d be lost in a sea of expensive ties and overpriced handbags.

Minghao noticed and gave your shoulder a reassuring squeeze. He approached the materdee and smiled politely.

The host asked, “Do you have a reservation?”

“Minghao Xu. Table for two.”

You couldn’t help but giggle at the accidental rhyme, earning you a less-than-approving glance from the host. But as he was busy scanning through the names on his list, Minghao leaned over and kissed the top of your head, always happy to recognize your lame sense of humor.

“Yes, Minghao Xu. Your table will be ready in thirty minutes.”

Minghao furrowed his eyebrows, but it was hard to tell in the dim lighting. “What? I made a reservation.”

“Yes, but sir we get very busy. If you didn’t have a reservation, you could be here for hours.”

With a sigh, Minghao shook his head and stepped aside with you. “Sorry, dear.”

“It’s okay. I don’t mind waiting.”

Minghao took a second and scanned his surroundings. “The wait’s probably the thing I mind the least about this place.”

Standing next to a bunch of people who clearly fit into the ambiance of the restaurant, you gestured for Minghao to shrink down to your height. You whispered, “I know. I thought I was uncomfortable before, but this is kind of ridiculous. Do you think anyone here makes less than two million a year?”

He laughed and gently placed his hand on your head, a unique sign of his affection that you learned to read early on in your relationship. “Yeah. Us.”

You laughed with him. “We’re students! We each literally make maybe 200 bucks a week! What’re we doing here?”

Trying not to draw in the attention from those around, Minghao smiled and thought it over. He glanced back at the materdee before gesturing his head to the door. “You wanna get out of here?”

Of course you did, but it was your anniversary. You under the impression you had to do something bigger than your usual, low-key celebrations. “But it’s for our anniversary.”

Minghao, on the other hand, was never one to conform to social convention. He could tell you wanted to leave just as badly as he did. With a playful grin, he took your hand. “Come on.”

Having trouble following in your barely worn heels, you let Minghao lead you out. Without stopping, he quickly told the materdee, “You can take off ‘Minghao Xu.’” And with that, you two left.

Back inside the car, you gave a sigh of relief and shut the door. “Well, that was nice, dear. I had a great time.”

“Where to, my love?”

You thought it over, but you couldn’t come up with anything. You were too busy being distracted by the pain in your feet. Taking off your shoes, you rubbed the soles and groaned.

“(Y/N), you okay?”

“Yeah,” you replied. “My feet are just killing me. I guess this is what we get for trying something different.”

Minghao watched you fondly until he remembered something. “Here!” he exclaimed, reaching to the backseat of the car. You looked up and turned with him. A huge smile on his face, Minghao brought forward a plain, plastic shopping bag. “It’s a bit early in the night, but you can open your present now.”

You looked at him confused but overwhelmed with joy. You two had never been the type to get presents just because the time called for it, so you were surprised to see he actually got you something. At the same time, it was no surprise that it wasn’t wrapped. “Baby, you didn’t have to get me anything.”

“I know,” he laughed. “And I know you didn’t get me anything.”

You scoffed and took the present, placing it in your lap. “Who says I didn’t? It’s at home. Err, it will be at home.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I ordered it online and it hasn’t come yet,” you lied.

Not buying it, he raised an eyebrow at you. “You mean you’ll order it tonight and it’ll come after that.”

You looked away and couldn’t help but blush. “Maybe.”

“You’re so cute,” he mused, shoving his hand towards what was in the bag. “Now open it!”

Eagerly, you opened the bag and squealed when you took out a Converse shoe box. “Aww, Minghao! You know I’ve been needing new shoes!”

He flashed a huge smile and helped take out the other item in the bag. “I got you socks, too.”

“You’re such a dork,” you complimented him, taking out the sneakers. “Ah! They’re so nice!”

“What can I say, my favorite color looks good on you,” he said as you held the red shoes. “Now, put those on so we can go eat somewhere! I’m starving!”

Glowing with adoration, you smiled at your boyfriend before grabbing the back of his neck and pulling him in for a kiss. “Thank you, dear.”

“I love you,” he said, your foreheads together.

You’d known that for a while, but it never hurt to hear it again. “I love you, too.”

You two had always been like this. From the very beginning, when Minghao and you were still just best friends in middle school, there was always a very special bond between you two. Everyone who knew you both could see it, even if it was hard to describe. You had a weird way of showing your love for each other, never in anyone’s face about your relationship or overly affectionate in front of others. To a lot of your friends, you both were “relationship goals,” but to each other, you were just happy.

You had never been the type to fall head over heels for someone or let your loving emotions cloud your judgement, so when you were 15 and agreed to go out with Minghao, you took every precaution. You never wanted to be that dumb girl who fell for a guy and lost all your senses. You refused to be that person. But as the years went by, you realized that you never had to worry about that with Minghao. Together, you both grew into two strong, independent people who knew what it meant to love someone else. It was the greatest bond you ever had, and you couldn’t be more thankful.

In terms of the relationship, Minghao never feared as much as you. He had no problem making you the center of his world, even though you did. You always made sure that he was level headed when it came to your emotions, and in turn he tried his best not to be too obsessive. But that was hard to do since he was so in love with you. Minghao was a smart kid, and now at age 21, he was proud to say he was smarter than he was when he first asked you out. That being said, asking you out was still the smartest thing he ever did. It was you that made him the person he was, someone who was a lot more caring than his original self, someone more confident, more deserving.

It had been a long road coming, but with the two of you enrolled in university, Minghao only a year ahead of you, you both felt like your lives were headed in the right direction, and thankfully that direction had you going together.

Having left the parking lot, it only took them twenty minutes to get to your new dinner spot. After ordering and sitting down, you didn’t need to wait too long before Minghao came back with the food. “Now this is more like it!” he cheered.

You laughed and greedily took your burger from the tray. Taking a huge bite, you noticed the curious glances from the few other people at McDonald’s at 9pm. “I think we’re a little overdressed,” you joked.

He smiled and stuffed a few fries in his mouth. “Doesn’t matter what we look like, I will always feel at home here.”

“Cheers to that,” you said as you tapped your burgers together.

“Happy five years, my dear.”

Your cheeks full, you mumbled the same. “Happy five years.”
