Scarlet Heart Ryeo 2: The Aftermath

“Why are you staring at me?”

Ha-Jin jumped up in surprise, tightening the seatbelt around her chest. She squealed, surprised he caught her.

“I…what?”

Jae-Yeong cast her a side glance while he drove. “Don’t think I don’t notice,” he said, “You’ve been looking at me every now and then. And you’ve been awfully quiet. What gives?”

Ha-Jin couldn’t come up with a decent lie. She fumbled in her seat, touching the seatbelt nervously.

“I…I wasn’t staring,” she lied, “I was just…looking outside.”

“Why? Can’t you look at your side of the window?” he shot back.

“Your view…is better,”

“My view and yours are the same,”

An awkward silence ensued. Ha-Jin couldn’t think of a proper excuse anymore; rather than lie again, she just looked out her side of the window. She tried her best not to look at him again. Instead, she remembered what just happened.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in the company of Min-Suk and his wife. They told her of how Min-Suk and Jae-Yeong met through a drunken bar fight, which ended up with them being friends instead. Yoo-Hee gushed about her husband frequently, touching her baby bump then touching his cheeks. Jae-Yeong often joked of how the baby would probably end up looking like him.

They were a pleasant couple and Ha-Jin liked them instantly. Based on her observations, Min-Suk, apart from looking like Baek-Ah, also served the same role the 13th Prince had. He was one of Jae-Yeong’s closest friends.

The stars were plenty outside and Ha-Jin tried to distract herself with them. She didn’t want to stare at him again; she had already run out of excuses.

“I paint the pictures my brain tells me to.”

That image of the lake on his canvass haunted her. It didn’t help that when he finished it, he got everything down to the last detail. It was as if she was staring at the actual lake.

Oh my god, I don’t think I’ll sleep tonight, she thought to herself, rubbing her forehead. Almost everyone from her past life was here: the seven brothers (if she would have to meet the Ninth Prince, she didn’t know what she’d do), the Emperor and his Queen, and even Woo-Hee.

It didn’t help that Jae-Yeong showed signs of remembering the past.

What the hell am I going to do?

She cast him another secret glance. Jae-Yeong kept his eyes on the road, clueless to the inner battle commencing within his passenger’s head. Ha-Jin was torn between the old-age question: was he Wang So or not?

If I don’t die of brain damage, I don’t know what will kill me.

Thirty minutes later, they were parked in front of the Hwang Corporation Main Building. Ha-Jin had asked him not to drop her off at home, insisting that she wanted to take the train. She couldn’t sort out her thoughts well if he was still there. She’d go mad. Luckily, he didn’t insist further.

She got out of the car just as he did. He looked at her from his side; she, on the other hand, tried to avoid his gaze. But before she could leave, he made his way in front of her.

“So, were you de-stressed?” he asked.

“Uh…yes,” she said, “Thanks for bringing me along. I like the change of scenery.”

“Huh, that’s weird,”

“What?”

He was looking at her with those inquisitive eyes of his.

“Just minutes ago, you were staring at me,” he remarked, “Now, you can’t even look at me. What gives?”

“I wasn’t staring!” exclaimed Ha-Jin, “And I can look at you. See? I’m looking!” she told him, widening her eyes at his face, “I’m looking at you!”

She was immediately taken aback when Jae-Yeong shoved his face at hers—closing only two inches of distance between them. Ha-Jin found her backed-up against his car, his face so close to hers. Her body was frozen in shock.

He was so close.

She could see every detail of his face—from his thick eyebrows to his eagle-like eyes. She didn’t know what to do.

“Does this feel uncomfortable?” he asked her with that cocky smile on his face.

Say something, you idiot, she told herself, Tell him something. Shoot him back. ANYTHING!

All Ha-Jin did was fidget and look back at him. What did he want? Why was he so close? What is that sudden urge to just pull him closer? And why did she feel guilty about it?

“This payback for all the staring you did,” he said.

“Well, if it isn’t my hyung,” came another voice.

Ha-Jin jumped in surprise while Jae-Yeong maintained his composure at the sight of Il-Sung and Nari—the former sporting a patronizing look on his face, the latter looking scandalized (or was it shock? Ha-Jin couldn’t point out).

Jae-Yeong shoved his hands in his pockets. “What are you doing here this time of the evening and on a Saturday?” he asked, “Aren’t you supposed to be with Mother?”

“We just met her actually. Nari and I told her about our wedding plans,” said Il-Sung, “Then I decided to drop by to pick up some papers for next week. Didn’t think I’d run into you and…your date?”

The second Hwang son looked at Ha-Jin from top to bottom, smirking as he did.

“I see you’re into the cosmetic specialist,” he commented, “Nice to see you again, Miss Go.”

Immediately, Ha-Jin bowed politely. When she got up, she saw that Nari was looking at her with the same suspicious expression she had a week ago. It wasn’t even just suspicion—it was a mixture of disbelief and annoyance.

“Where did you guys go?” asked Il-Sung.

“Somewhere up North,” answered Jae-Yeong, “Had to do some stuff.”

“Like go on a date,”

“What are you trying to say?

“Nothing,” shrugged Il-Sung, a cocky smile, similar to his brother’s, spread on his face, “I’ll be dropping Nari off. I’ll see you back at home or are you going alone again?”

“I’ll just surprise you,” said Jae-Yeong, “You’d better get going. Nari looks like she might catch a cold.”

Il-Sung glanced at his fiancée and wrapped an arm around her. “We’ll see you tomorrow, hyung. We’re having a family lunch,” he said, “Why don’t you bring Miss Ha-Jin?”

“That won’t be necessary,” said Jae-Yeong, looking at her, “I’ve dragged her along enough.”

There was that familiar of tension surrounding the two brothers. Ha-Jin hated being sandwiched between these two—but she had Nari to endure it with. Before anything got out of hand, Il-Sung nodded at his hyung and took his fiancée by the hand, leaving Ha-Jin with a tensed Jae-Yeong.

Ugh…why am I always the one defusing the bomb? she complained, mentally cursing Il-Sung for always provoking his brother. She anticipated the coldness to come any second now.

Jae-Yeong whistled and diverted his attention to her again. Surprisingly, he wasn’t glaring or angry.

“I guess this is good night,” he said.

“I…I guess so,”

He flashed a small smirk, “Next time, don’t stare at people. It’s rude,” he said, “Do you understand?”

Ha-Jin bowed her head, hoping her hair would cover her blushing cheeks. “Ye…yes,” she said, “Thanks.” Then with a quick deep bow, she bid goodbye and made her way.

Her heart was still racing. With everything that happened today, she didn’t know how she’d sort her thoughts. Ha-Jin felt she would explode at the revelations and what had just happened. Could she sleep? Could she put this away for tomorrow?

She got out her phone and dialed. After a ring or two, he picked up.

“Hi it’s me,” she said, “Do you have time?”

--

“It’s weird to have you here at ten in the evening, Miss Ha-Jin,” said Presenter Ji-Hyun, “But this must be important for you.”

“Just helping a friend in need, Ji-Hyun-nim,” answered Ha-Jin, perusing through his books on reincarnation and past lives. The senior shook his head as he watched his junior studiously read his books in his mini library.

“Would you like a cup of tea or coffee?” he asked her, “This looks like a long inquisition.”

She laughed. “Not really…well, maybe. I guess I’m just curious,” she said, “And no thanks, I’m good.”

“So, what does your author friend want this time?”

Ha-Jin straightened up while browsing through a history book, “Uh…I was hoping for your insight about one of her characters,” she replied, “Was wondering if it were in real life…what it could mean.”

“Ahh it seems that your friend’s obsession with past lives has reached your shores,” he remarked, “What is the story?”

“Well uhm…what happens when the protagonist suspects one of the other characters is part of her previous life?” she asked, “I mean, this character, the protagonist initially thought he just looked like that…friend of hers in the past. But then, he gets this sort of memory.”

“Memory?”

“Like…an image from the past, but he doesn’t consider it significant. He thinks it’s just an image in his head,”

“Ahh…so are you wondering if that person could be part of the protagonist’s past life?”

“Uh…yes,”

Ji-Hyun looked at her thoughtfully. “Shouldn’t you be asking your author friend? After all, it’s her story,” he said.

“But I’m just curious. What if it happened in real life? What does that mean?”

The senior took a moment to think about it; Ha-Jin, on the other hand, wondered if she sounded too urgent. After all, she was just asking about a fictitious book from a fictitious author friend. Would the presenter see through her?

“Then, that means he remembers,”

Oh my god.

Hope flooded through Ha-Jin as she took in this new detail. So, it’s possible that Jae-Yeong—?

“But then again, he doesn’t,”

Wait, what?

“I’m sorry?”

“Remember what I said about life trying to correct itself and how it could affect those it uses to do so?” he asked.

“Yes,”

“I think there’s a possibility that you friend’s other character also has a role to play in the said change,” explained Ji-Hyun, “If it were to happen in real life, it means he might be the past incarnate incapable of fulfilling his job.”

“Why?”

“Because he can’t remember. He does, but he doesn’t,” said her senior, “Makes me think that your character’s friend might be caught in between. His previous life must’ve been too turbulent that the Self is torn between wanting to recall and wishing to forget all together, if that is the case.”

Ha-Jin was stumped. “So…the soul…there’s a chance that it’ll just give up like that?”

“Depending on the soul, I guess. If it has lived a troubled life and wishes not to do it all over again, it could convince the present incarnation to forget. But if the Self’s role is significant, I doubt fate will let it go that easy,” said Ji-Hyun, “It’s similar to the paranormal concept of Step-In—the old soul steps into a new body, which rejects the former’s intentions.”

“Your friend is setting up an interesting yet sort of tragic character here, Miss Ha-Jin,” he added, “This type of character is in for an unpleasant ride.”

“Wait, why is that?”

Ji-Hyun was watching his lit candle, observing the flame. “We all know that our greatest enemy is the Self. In this case, your character is battling himself unknowingly,” he explained, “Only one side, however, will prevail. In most cases, it shouldn’t be harmful but when the person gets in too deep and confused, he might self-destruct.”

“Self-destruct? Isn’t that a bit…too much?”

“In fiction, hardly. In real life, however, it might be,” said Ji-Hyun, “I don’t know how it ends but the individual could end up rejecting one life altogether. This is why some people stay away from past life regression; they don’t wish to mess things up.”

There was a wave of silence as Ji-Hyun read his book.

“Is your friend attempting to incorporate fantastical concepts? This sounds all too familiar,” he asked, “Like destiny trying to regain composure the second time around.”

“Is there no way to help him out?” Ha-Jin asked, “Is he doomed to self-destruct?”

“Triggers, they say, usually help but I don’t know what sort,” he replied, “My Miss Ha-Jin, you seem really invested in this story. I’m starting to think it’s not just about helping out a friend anymore.”

He was looking at her seriously; was he trying to guess what she was really after?

She smiled cockily at him. “I am trying to help a friend,” she replied, “Just really invested in it. When she becomes famous, she can’t deny my hand in it.”

This seemed to have satisfied the presenter’s curiosity as he chuckled heartily and sorted his books. “She’s a lucky friend then,” he commented, “But her subject matter is very interesting, makes one think about their potential past life. Always thought of myself existing as a chef or a teacher during those periods.”

She looked at the thoughtful presenter as he happily stacked one book on top of the other. Ha-Jin remembered nights filled with stars and the reliable astronomer teaching the Fourth Prince about them.

How long has it been?

“If I the protagonist in your friend’s tale, I wouldn’t push it,” he said, “Who knows what could happen when one tampers with a confused soul.”

Confused soul?

“But then again, what’s a good story without the trouble…am I right, Miss Ha-Jin?”

--

“This is definitely one of the perks of our job,” commented Si Eun as she brought out boxes of products, “We get to see a photo shoot ourselves.”

“The Goryeo line looks so promising,” said Luna, taking one bottle of perfume, “I can’t wait to see your concepts come to life, Ha-Jinah.”

Ha-Jin smiled as she watched her busy surroundings. It was another day of work, but not at the makeup store or at the Hwang Cooperation. This time, everyone was at a local studio for the product shoot. Manager Park sent the three girls to oversee the preparations, as well as the handling of their products.

“I wonder who the model is,” wondered Si Eun, “She has to be super pretty to do these products justice. I mean, look at these bottles!”

“Wow, this is what it feels like to be in a set, huh?” said Luna, “I feel special! Hey, Ha-Jinah, take my picture!” she said, handing her phone and striking a pose. Ha-Jin obliged and took her friend’s “model” photo. Si Eun joined in the fun and flashed her fiercest look, holding the bottle here and there.

People were too busy with their own responsibilities as they passed the cosmetic specialists. The set saw producers, photographers, and designers. Ha-Jin couldn’t help but be excited, despite the nagging worry every now and then from Ji-Hyun’s revelations.

Realizing that Jae-Yeong could be Wang So turned out to be a blessing and a curse. If it was true that he could remember, it was good news; but if he destroys himself in the process, it might mean disaster. Ha-Jin, however, wanted to learn more. She didn’t want to give up on him. Ha-Jin knew that Hae Soo would be mad at her if she did.

After all, there were other things Ji-Hyun revealed that night—not just about his knowledge about past lives, but on Jae-Yeong as well.

“Ahh! I see a pretty woman over there! They’re flocking over her! She must be it!” exclaimed Luna. Both Si Eun and Ha-Jin tipped on their toes to see amidst the crowd.

“Waah, she’s so beautiful!” said Si Eun, “Glamorous and gorgeous, don’t you think so Ha-Jinah?”

Ha-Jin agreed that the model was beautiful, but her surprise got the best of her. As Kang Nari made her way through the studio, surrounded by attendants and fans, Ha-Jin felt a lump on .

So, Princess Yeon-Hwa’s incarnate was a model. Ha-Jin also found it odd to see Nari without Il-Sung, instead followed by assistants and stylists. She watched as a make-up artist applied last-minute blush on Nari’s sculpted cheeks. The latter smiled graciously at the people around her, obviously charming them. You'd think she was a princess waving at her loyal subjects.

“Go Ha-Jin!” called the director, “Please bring the bottles here!”

“Uh…yes, right away!” she said, immediately grabbing a box.  Her heart pounded wildly as she approached the main set. The staff cleared her path and made a way for her, until she reached the director.

“Ah, these bottles are beautiful,” he said, “Can’t wait to see the rest of your products, Miss Ha-Jin.”

“Thank you so much,” she replied, “Can’t wait for you to see them, as well.”

“Let me introduce you to our star first!” he said, then he disappeared for a while and returned, pulling Nari, “Go Ha-Jin, this beautiful lady will be modeling for your product. Nari, this is Ha-Jin—a specialist in collaboration with the Hwang Cooperation.”

Ha-Jin was surprised when Nari flashed a pleasant smile. Up-close, she was beautiful beyond words; those dimples complemented her angelic smile and her eyes sparkled. It didn’t help that she was done up so fabulously. Ha-Jin felt insecure in her make-up artist attire.

“We’ve met. I’ve seen her around the company whenever Il-Sung brings me,” she said.

“Oh yes, your fiancée is one of the sons!” remarked the director, “So you have seen Miss Go around.”

“Yes, but we’ve never got to talk much,” she said, “Busy scheds and all. But I’m glad you’re here, Ha-Jinah. The new line looks amazing.”

“They’ll look even more amazing when you model them!” exclaimed the director, “Which reminds me, it’s time to start the photo shoot! You can chat with Ha-Jin later, Miss Nari, but for now, I must photograph your beauty!”

Nari blushed and looked shyly at the director, “I’m more than honored, director-nim,” she said, then she looked at Ha-Jin, “I guess I’ll see you later.” The two then proceeded to the set for their shoot, leaving Ha-Jin astounded.

“Wah, you got to talk to the model!” gushed Luna once Ha-Jin returned to their spot, “You’re so lucky!”

“She seemed nice, didn’t she?” asked Si Eun, “I heard from one of the producers that she’s Hwang Il-Sung’s fiancée too. God, what a blessed girl. She’s beautiful, nice, and has a rich guy in tow! What I’d give to be her.”

The cameras flashed as Ha-Jin watched Nari from afar. Everyone admired her beauty as she flawlessly struck one pose after the other.

“Hwang Il-Sung is a lucky man!”

“She’s the perfect combination of everything. I read about her charity works; she’s such an inspiration.”

“I read that she finished a graduate’s degree on special education. She’s that passionate in making a difference.”

“Do you think I can use makeup to copy her look?”

Ha-Jin couldn’t help but feel jealous at Nari. She hadn’t confirmed it yet, but she was sure that something happened between her and Jae-Yeong. Otherwise, why would he look hurt whenever Il-Sung and Nari were together? She could still remember that look in his eyes when he stared at them during their engagement party.

It didn’t help that Ji-Hyun also sort of filled her in with information about them.

She’s still a princess in this life, apparently.

“God, how can you not fall in love with that woman?” sighed Si Eun, “I’m reading more about her tonight. It’s no wonder my sister idolizes her.”

The cameras continued to capture Nari’s beauty. Ha-Jin still couldn’t believe the model smiled genuinely at her. Her gracious smile was far different from the suspicious looks she gave the past months. Did she have a change of heart or something?

An hour later, the director raised his hands.

“And that is a wrap!” he declared and turned to face his staff, “Thank you all for the help! Your hard work is much appreciated. And thank you to Kang Nari for gracing us with her presence.”

Nari waved her hands and shook her head. “No, the pleasure is mine. Anything to help!” she said, “A free bottle of this perfume is enough payment!”

Her tinkling laugh rang across the studio, amazing everyone. The staff began to wrap up while others took the time to ask the model for a photo.

“Wow, she was amazing!” remarked Luna, packing up the returned bottles, “Do you think we can ask for a photo?”

“Once the crowd subsides, I guess,” said Si Eun, “But damn, what a girl!”

Ha-Jin said nothing; she pretended to be too busy with the makeup to notice. She didn’t know if her worries about Wang So or these new feelings of insecurity were the main cause of her discomfort. All she knew was she wanted to get out of the room.

I have to study. I have to do research. Really, I just have to get out of here.

“Ah, Ha-Jinah, there you are,” came a melodious voice.

Ha-Jin turned and saw Nari with her assistant, both smiling at her. Ha-Jin could hear her friends holding their squeals behind her. Immediately, she politely bowed at the model.

“You were great today, Miss Nari,” she said.

“Thanks a lot,” said Nari, “And are these your friends?”

“Ah, yes. This is Si Eun and Luna, my fellow cosmetic specialists,” introduced Ha-Jin. Her friends giddily bowed at the model and shook her hand, showering her with fan girl compliments. Nari’s face lit up at their words, humbly waving them away.

“It’s all in a day’s work,” she said.

“No, you were really cool, Miss Nari!” exclaimed Luna, “So fabulous!”

“Really means a lot that you appreciate,” said Nari, “Thank you! But if you don’t mind, can I talk to Ha-Jin for a second?”

“Me?” asked a surprised Ha-Jin.

“Yes, you,” said Nari, “It’s about the line. It will take just a second, I promise. Mind following me over there?” she asked, pointing to a small corner on the set.

“Uhm…sure,” answered Ha-Jin uncertainly. Nari nodded at her assistant and bid the other two goodbye as she went ahead with Ha-Jin in tow. The latter didn’t know what to expect. What questions does she have about the line?

Once they got to the corner, Nari looked around the set then got out her phone. The silence was too awkward for Ha-Jin’s comfort; she figured she should at least break it.

“You were really beautiful today, Miss Nari,” she began, “The ads will surely be priceless due to your—“

Nari snapped her phone shut and just looked at Ha-Jin.

“You,” she began, “You stay away from Jae-Yeong.”

A/N: I was just wondering: did no one notice the appearance of 10th Prince Eun in the last chapter? I was hoping someone would talk about him, but apparently, Baek-Ah took much of the attention. Should I do more of Eun for him to be noticed? I just love Baekhyun that’s all. But Kai, mostly.

Anyways, Yeon Hwa—in this life or the last—will always be that cruel witch. Or is she? I dunno. You decide.

Chapter 17: I've just spent the last 2 hours on this and I do fear the future. This is my 2nd read of your book and I realised you mess with emotions just as bad as the writers. Like no. I don't want soo-wook/hajin-taewon interactions. I hated him in the drama too much. Also someone explain to me how girls in books, movies, shows and tv don't understand that they are entertaining 2nd male leads advances. It is always so obvious even to strangers in these fictious mediums that the other dude likes them but they act so shocked when the guy makes a confession. Like no it bothers me. I had a similar incident irl with my fiance (love of my life, literal soulmate and only man I'll ever allow to have me) and an old high school classmate. My fiance and I liked each other but this other person thought it was fair game despite being both of our friends. I told him up front that I don't like homewreckers and if he cared half as much as he claimed then he wouldn't be trying to destroy my happiness for the sake of his own. Most dramas glamourise this concept that it's only fair game unless they're married but it shouldn't be fair game when they couple is officially involved. It's gross.

Chapter 3: They didn't even put in the scene where someone gave Ha-jin a handkerchief. I was devastated.

Anyway, your writing is good. There might be some typos or even missing words, a bit of grammar issues here and there but not enough to distract from the story. I rarely read fanfics from other authors because I trust only a few but I'm adding you to my list of go-to authors. 😊 You obviously have talent and skill; a bit of polishing will help you a lot.
