Chapter 24

Peach

You felt someone tap on the side of your desk, and turned to your colleague, only to find her gesturing to the door.

And couldn't help but to grin when you saw who was there.

Glancing down at the time, you smiled slightly when you saw that he was there on the dot, again.

'You're done with your portion already right?' You snapped your head back up to look at the person next to you, before nodding slightly as you smiled apologetically. 'Then you should go first. Don't keep the director waiting.'

'Thank you!'

'Oppa you could have dropped me a text and I could just meet you at the carpark straight away.' You said softly as you nudged him with your elbow when you ensured that there was no one within hearing distance.

But you knew what the look that he gave you meant without him having to say anything.

'Jaebum oppa, they'll feel pressured if you come every day and just stand there and stare.'

'But I didn't even say anything!'

Now, it was your turn to narrow your eyes at him. 'You know you don't have to say anything to pressure them.'

'Aren't you being a bit rude? I'm three years older than you if you don't remember.'

'Then shouldn't you act like you're three years older?'

'Excuse you? Are you looking down on your husband right now?'

'No I'm not. How can I look down on you when you're tall-'

'Shh. SHH.' You giggled when he raked his hand through his hair frustratingly, only to have him glare at you. 'You better watch out. I'm the one planning our trip for the weekend.'

'You wouldn't do anything~'

'Wait till I throw you into the water and laugh by the side!'

'And you still say that you're three years older than me.'

You quickly pulled the covers over your head when you heard him stepping out of the washroom and closing the door behind him.

And you waited, waited and waited.

But your blanket was never pulled off, and neither were you attacked with tickles to your waist.

In fact, there was absolutely no signs of your husband.

To your disappointment.

Is it another one of his childish plays again?

After contemplating whether or not to, you finally peeked out from underneath your sheets only to realize that the lights were already switched off. Yet he was nowhere in sight.

And in the next moment, you found yourself creeping through the dark house in search for that one person, hoping not to crash into something by accident.

Fortunately for you, it wasn't long before you found a room with its lights switched on.

'Jaebum oppa, are you not going to sleep?' You asked as you poked your head into his study, with him seated behind his desk, and noticed that he wasn't in his robe.

'I still have work to do. You go sleep first.' A glance was all he gave you. Not even a smile. You were pretty sure it lasted for less than a second.

'Oppa.'

'Hmm?' His eyes remained fixed on the stack of files before him, not looking up at all. And you never knew you could be this upset from not receiving a proper acknowledgement of your presence. But you soon reasoned out that it was because he was Jaebum, and was also the reason as to why you always experienced extreme emotions recently.

'Are you mad at me?'

'Why would I be?'

'I don't know... Because of what I said just now?'

Jaebum finally looked up when he heard how wavery your voice was getting, only to find you still hiding behind his door. He even had the feeling that you retreated further behind it. 'What are you doing there where I can't even see you clearly, come here.'

And he saw how you frowned when you reluctantly allowed yourself to be summoned to his side, and pulled onto his lap.

'Yes, my dear?'

'You could have bathed first, then you didn't have to wait for me to finish. You could have started on your work earlier.'

'It's not much. And of course I'm not mad at you. Now, do me a favour and go to sleep first hmm?'

'But oppa have work tomorrow too!'

'Do you really want us to be bickering over this when you can go to sleep and I can quickly finish this up and join you?'

'I can just stay here quietly and wait for you 'till you finish your work too...'

'Hyewon, it's late.'

'No. I don't want to. I sleep better when I'm with you.' You pouted, hoping that it would work. But Jaebum managed to resist himself against the faces you were giving him, and how you were clinging onto his arm.

'Hyewon, I wouldn't be able to concentrate if you stay here. I'll even take longer than necessary. So please go to bed first? I'll join you as soon as I can.'

He immediately smiled when he saw you dragging your feet back to your room, silently relieved that you finally gave in.

Never did he expect his father to increase his workload, just simply because he was going to take a few days off. But then to think about it again, he only had himself to blame, as it was actually more or less reasonable of his father to do so since he wasn't actually keeping up with work recently.

Why can't he just do this after I come back? What if she gets all pouty and upset during the trip too? It wouldn't work out that way...

Jaebum quickly stacked up the signed files, before heading straight to your shared room.

She should be asleep by now right? She'd better be.

And he could not help but to smile at what greeted him.

You had your back resting against the headboard with a book in your hands atop the pillow on your lap.

But your head was nodding off as your body tilted slightly to the side.

This silly girl...

'Her. That's her. I've heard that they're arranged.'

'There's still arranged marriages today?'

'She has guts, to actually ask to work here too.'

You had barely entered the company cafeteria but you've already heard a few comments and gotten a few looks.

Jaebum had a lunch meeting, and you had to join your colleagues at the cafeteria instead, which was a first for you. And you might have forgotten about the badmouthing that you would get with Jaebum occupying your mind nearly the entire time you were there.

Now that you actually heard what others were saying, you definitely didn't feel too good about it.

Thankfully, your colleagues disregarded the looks from others and gestured for you to follow them once they saw you lagging behind. Though that didn't mean that they weren't interested in what was going around.

'You know, I've never seen the director that often until you joined us.'

'All we heard about him are from rumours.'

'That he is extremely strict and cold.'

'He doesn't look that way though, when he sees you.'

'How did you first meet?' Three pairs of eyes fixated on you as they waited for your response excitedly, their cutleries in hand but food untouched.

'He came over to my house for dinner with his parents.'

'Awww, that's cute.'

You tried not to let your expressions show, but you were confused with what was being referred to as cute. Him coming over to your house for dinner, or him coming over for dinner with his parents. But Jaebum oppa is cute. Really cute.

'When?'

That was when you hesitated. 'Two months ago.'

'You first met each other two months ago?'

And you couldn't help but to be doubtful again. Especially with the word 'arranged' repeating continuously in your head.

'Oppa,'

'Hmm?'

'When did you start liking me?'

He knew that something was wrong the moment he picked you up from work, from the tired and empty look in your eyes, and your slightly slumped shoulders.

But he was glad that this time, you spoke without him asking.

'Did somebody say something again?'

'Not really...'

You could hear him sighing and you knew what it meant. He thought that you would speak to him, and you thought so too. But you didn't know how to start.

Looking down at the bucket of popcorn in your hands as you rested next to Jaebum comfortably on the couch, you took a while before you turned back to him.

'If the caramel popcorn is chosen, I get to ask you a question. If it's cheese, oppa can ask me a question.'

'Sure.'

'Then we'll take turns choosing? No peeking! And I'll go first!'

Caramel. 'When did oppa start liking me?'

So is this where it's going? Jaebum shifted slightly as you did not remove your eyes from him, and he could feel his blood rushing through his veins.

'When I saw you with your halmoni through the window.'

And your eyebrows perked up at the new information, though he was soon reaching out for his turn. 'Really?'

Cheese. He smirked. 'When did you start liking me?'

I should have poured more caramel popcorns just now...

'Come on~ I merely repeated your question.' And he couldn't help but to grin at how your cheeks blushed as you looked away slightly.

'D-During the photoshoot.'

Caramel. 'How many girlfriends did oppa have?'

'Two.'

You went silent for a moment, unsure if you were supposed to be glad that he was honest, or to be upset that he didn't give you the answer that you wanted to hear.

Caramel. 'Why do you like me?'

Silence ensued, as he stared into your eyes, and you could feel his grip around you tightening. Before he finally gave an answer. 'Do I need a reason to?'

'It's not fair to answer a question with another one!'

'You didn't mention that rule from the start.' And he proceeded on with picking another one.

Cheese. 'What did they say to you when I wasn't there?'

He wasn't expecting it when he saw your name popping up on his phone screen. But at the same time, he couldn't remember when was the last time you called him.

'Youngie oppa! I left my DSLR at your place didn't I?'

'I think so, why?'

'Can I come over to get it in the afternoon during lunch break?'

'Today?'

'Mhmm!'

'I can just past it to you tomorrow though, maybe we can meet outside?'

'But I'm going out tomorrow! I'll only be back in three days, and I wanted to bring my camera with me.'

'Out?'

'Jaebum oppa is bringing me on a trip! If you're not free I can just drop by and get it myself, I just wanted to check with you first!'

'Sure, the passcode's still the same. It's probably in my room. Drop me a text when you're reaching?'

'Okay! Thank you oppa!'

Jinyoung couldn't help but to notice how excited you sound when you spoke to him.

And he couldn't miss the faint 'Stop moving around, you're distracting me.' in the background either.

The feeling of guilt swelled when you answered his call on the first ring, showing that you were actually already waiting for him.

He was the one who suggested bringing you there, so that it was more convenient for you, yet he has to call you back because of a change in his schedule.

'Jagi, I have some proposals to sign by the afternoon, can you head over first and I'll drive you back afterwards?'

'Oppa do you want me to wait for you?'

'It's okay, I'm not too sure how long I'll take. But you'll be fine going alone, right?'

'Yeap! Don't worry oppa, I'll call you if anything happens.'

Jaebum frowned as he saw the new stack of files by his desk. Let's get this done asap.

Great timing to send this in, dad.

Placing your bag down on the couch by instinct, you smiled when you took in the familiar environment. It has been ages since you've last been there, and to think about it, before everything happened, it was probably your most frequented place.

Shaking off past memories, you quickly headed to his room and retrieved your treasured camera.

There were countless of pictures of you and Jinyoung, and you smiled unknowingly as you scrolled through it, excited to include more of you and Jaebum. Also taking a mental note to go on a trip with the both of them, and just by the thought of it, you couldn't even imagine how fun and ridiculous it would be with the two childish males.

Right at that moment, you heard the door click, and quickly headed out to greet him. 'Youngie-'

If I rush over, I shouldn't be that late, we'll probably have time to grab lunch together-

But his ringtone broke his train of thoughts as he headed out of the company.

Why is he calling me now?

'Hello?'

'Hyung, are you sure you're going to keep this on?'

'What? Is Hyewon not there yet? I asked her to head over first-'

'Just what are you trying to do? You made her fall for you, now what?'

'What are you saying-'

'Was the bet not enough?'

Wait, this- He has no reason to-

'Jaebum hyung. Stop making a joke out of her. If you don't stop it soon- I'll tell Won that you made a bet and all this isn't real-'

All he remembered hearing was that loud, resounding crash.

'W-Won? When did you-'

You shook your head as you stepped back, your hands shaking before you, while the camera lens scattered all over the ground, the camera broken beyond repair.

'I-It's not true.'

'Hyewon, listen, I can explain-'

'Tell m-me it's not true. H-He wouldn't-'

He knew it was weird once he received a call from Jinyoung. Especially when he was already nice enough to let you go over to his place first.

But he never should have picked up the call.

Never did he expect it to happen. When he wasn't there. All he heard was a crash. But he knew, that whatever that came from, it wasn't going to be the only thing breaking.

Hyewon, you have to wait for me. I can explain, I will explain everything to you, just don't do anything rash.

The road past in a blur of red and white lights as he stepped on the accelerator, the car honks all blocked out as he held his phone to his ear, repeatedly trying to reach you.

As long as you answered his call. Just once, even for a second, he would have been able to calm himself down for the slightest.

Hyewon, please answer- He looked down to redial your number, only to spot you walking off in a daze on the street across once he looked up-

But what he did not notice was the red light that he went past.

It's not true. There must be a reason. Jaebum oppa wouldn't do this.

I must have misheard, yes. He was probably talking about someone else.

A bet? This is all a bet? I-It can't be-

Hyew-

You snapped your head up when you thought you heard someone calling for you. Him calling for you.

But all that was in front of you was a huge lorry in the centre of the cross junction, and a glimpse of the car that was blocked by it.

You were certain that you heard him.

And unconsciously, your feet moved on its own until you got a clearer look of the capsized car.

The silence in your eardrums was piercing in contrast to the chaos that was happening on-site as your feet were now rooted onto the ground in the middle of the road.

You don't know that car. It's just a similar car. Everyone has that car.

But as soon as you saw fumes seeping through the shattered windows, you broke into a run.

You vaguely remembered arms reaching out to you, pulling you back, restraining you as they yelled that it was dangerous. But nothing went into your head when you finally got a glimpse of him. His jet black hair, the bright shimmer on his finger, a hint of the pastel blue dress shirt that you chose for him just that morning.

Glasses. Shattered window pieces surrounded him.

And most importantly, red.

Blood.

[A/N] I tried. And as usual, I am horridly bad with descriptions.

I have a feeling that I did a bad job with this ><

(Runs off to hide before any of you come and hunt me down)
