#17 Chanyeol's Friend and Past
When You Loved the Other Half of MeAfter spending 3 hours at the Namsan Tower, the three of you felt hungry and wanted to eat together somewhere. Minkyung suggested Hongdae, because there were so many cool cafés and restaurants. It didn’t take too long from Myeongdong Station to Hongik University Station—probably around 15 minutes—so you didn’t mind. Chanyeol agreed enthusiastically to Minkyung’s suggestion. On the subway, it was quite packed because many people also headed to Hongdae. It was devastating you because your feet were hurting for walking so much earlier. Minkyung and Chanyeol didn’t complain and chatted happily, so you stayed quiet. As the person who sat in front of Chanyeol got up from his seat, Chanyeol let Minkyung to sit. Minkyung thanked Chanyeol and sat comfortably. You tried to hide your envious expression so hard at that time. Well, it was not too bad because you could stand beside Chanyeol the whole time on the subway.
Minkyung got excited when she won rock-paper-scissor and got to choose where three of you would eat. She was craving of budae jjigae (spicy sausage stew) and you were honestly afraid that she would choose a very famous budae jjigae restaurant in Hongdae. You noticed that Chanyeol couldn’t hide his nervous reaction too.
“Kyung, you know that I can’t eat spicy things,” you complained. It was better to complain first before Minkyung really went inside the restaurant. Imagining your stomach would hurt so bad if you ate budae jjigae, you stared at Minkyung with puppy eyes.
“Honestly, I can’t eat something spicy as well,” Chanyeol confessed shyly.
Minkyung laughed shortly. “Really? This is the first time I met a guy who can’t handle spicy food,” she said. Chanyeol’s ears got red. “Hmm.. Then, let’s go to Tiffany’s uncle rib barbeque restaurant. We went there before and it was delicious,” Minkyung continued.
You jumped a little in excitement because you liked rib so much. Chanyeol seemed okay to eat rib, so Minkyung led you and Chanyeol all the way to the rib restaurant. Hongdae was really crowded on weekends, causing you to slow down your walk.
“Yeol!”
The three of you stopped walking and turned your heads to the source of the voice who called Chanyeol. Chanyeol’s eyes widened and he immediately rushed to the owner of the voice. It was a guy with firm body and pretty good looking. Minkyung and you stayed motionless because both of you didn’t know how to respond. Chanyeol hugged him tightly and so did the other guy. They were exchanging pats and smiled ear to ear, indicating that they were so happy to see each other. You were observing the guy. He didn’t seem familiar, clearly not a student of your school. Minkyung also had a clueless expression. Minkyung was an active student at your school—almost everybody knew her and she tried her best to recognize our school-mates’ faces—so if Minkyung had a clueless expression, it means she didn’t know him. You barely heard their conversation.
“What are you doing here?” Chanyeol asked in surprise.
“I was searching for a new guitar,” the other guy answered.
Chanyeol shook his head. “I thought your guitars are still fine?”
The guy chuckled. “I joined a competition and it will be held one month from now in Gangnam. I better buy a new guitar, for luck.”
Then, Chanyeol gestured his hand toward you and Minkyung before walked back to your spot with his friend beside him. “This is my high school friend before I transferred to our school,” Chanyeol explained.
The guy bowed a bit, so did Minkyung and you. “Hi, I’m Kim Taewoo,” the guy said.
“Hi, Taewoo-ssi, nice to meet you,” Minkyung replied with friendly smile. You were still surprised, so you just smiled at him. You were always wondering about Chanyeol’s past high school and his reason to transfer school, so meeting Chanyeol’s friend from his previous high school was surprising you. “My name is Cha Minkyung,” Minkyung added, snapped you back from your thought. She took the initiative to shake hands with Taewoo.
“Ah—my name is Cha Miyeon,” you stuttered shyly. Taewoo gestured to shake hands with you as well, so you shook hands with him.
“Oh? You guys have the same surname?” Taewoo asked as he released his hand.
“We are twins,” Minkyung answered.
Taewoo made an ‘O’ with his mouth and looked surprised. “Fraternal twins,” you added before Taewoo would say something like ‘you guys don’t look alike’. Taewoo nodded in understanding. Fortunately, he didn’t comment further.
“Taewoo-ssi, we are about to have lunch. Late lunch—actually. Would you like to join us?” Minkyung invited warmly.
Chanyeol seemed to be grateful that Minkyung invited Taewoo to have lunch together.
“I’d like to,” Taewoo agreed coolly. He seemed like an easy-going guy, so you weren’t worried about eating together with him that might bring awkward vibe. “Where would we eat?” Taewoo asked.
“Minkyung won a rock-paper-scissor and she chose a rib restaurant,” Chanyeol answered.
“It’s my friend’s uncle’s restaurant. Don’t worry, I have been there and the food is delicious,” Minkyung added.
“Sounds great!” Taewoo chimed. Minkyung again led the way to the rib restaurant while three of them were chatting continuously. You felt small beside these talkative people so you stayed quiet and walked not far behind them. Chanyeol slowed his pace a bit and he patted your shoulder once. He smiled encouragingly to you, made you feel more comfortable than before. I should loosen up a bit. Minkyung made a turn to a modern looking restaurant and went inside.
