Chapter 21

The Old & The New

YoonYul Past – Yuri’s POV

Yuri was sitting in the living room after putting Tiffany to bed. Whatever happened at the hospital was such a huge chaos. She couldn’t forget it and she felt guilty towards Yoona.

The two ladies hugged each other tightly before Yoona slowly released her grip around Yuri’s. Yuri was still holding on to her waist tightly; she was not willing to let go just as yet.

“I’m sorry, Yuri.”

“No, don’t say that. It’s me who was in the wrong. You’re never at fault, Yoona.”

“I’m sorry for hugging you like this.”

“No, don’t say sorry. I miss hugging you so much. Just let me hold you for a while longer, Yoona.”

Yoona nodded her head and placed her left cheek against Yuri’s shoulder. Yuri wept silently; she knew this was probably the last time she was ever going to hold Yoona like this. She wanted to capture this moment for a little bit longer. A moment later, Yuri then slowly released her grip from Yoona and both stood there; staring at each other.

“Yuri, I have something to tell you.”

“What is it, Yoona?”

Yoona bit her lower lip. She wasn’t too sure if she should let Yuri know but she knew it was only fair that Yuri knew about her relationship with Jessica. Yuri was so honest about Tiffany.

“I’m seeing someone new.”

Yuri smiled. She knew. Well, she guessed it before.

“I know. You’re seeing Jessica, right?”

Yoona’s eyes grew larger. How did Yuri know?

“I saw you with Jessica before. Both of you were so happy together.”

“Huh?”

“Yoona, I’m just glad that you’ve moved on well. I’m really happy for you.”

“You’re not regretting that you could have lost me forever now?”

Yuri shook her head. She knew she had lost Yoona a long time ago. And when Yoona fell in love; she would fall in love with that person for the longest time.

“I don’t deserve you, Yoona. You deserve better than me.”

“Don’t say like that. I loved you before.”

“I know and I’m grateful to have created some memories with you. I wanted so much to tell you to move on from me; I’m sorry that I broke your heart but Yoona, I loved you sincerely before this. I know you wouldn’t believe me but I really do.”

“I know. But your love for Tiffany is stronger.”

“Yoona…”

“Don’t worry about it. Let’s just move on together, okay?”

“Promise me you’ll be happy, Yoona.”

“I’m expecting the same from you too, Yuri.”

Yuri sighed. She never expected Yoona to be forgiving. She knew Yoona’s a fantastic girl and she was envious of Jessica to have Yoona as her lover now. But Yuri was afraid that Yoona might be losing Jessica eventually.

She saw what happened between Jessica and Yoona at the carpark. They fought and it was Tiffany who urged Yuri to run after them. Yuri saw the broken look on Yoona’s face; it was the same forlorn expression Yoona wore when Yuri broke her heart.

Yuri felt so much pain in her heart for Yoona. She wanted so much to come forward and console Yoona but she knew she shouldn’t be there to add the fuel to the fire.

Suddenly her phone rang and Yuri was startled by the sound of it. She answered it immediately.

“KWON YURI!”

Yuri was taken aback at the screaming voice on the phone. She knew who that person was and she was extremely furious with Yuri – Choi Soo Young, Yoona’s best friend.

“Soo Young?”

“What happened to Yoona? What did you do to her?!”

Yuri was worried.

“Is Yoona alright?”

“She has been crying ever since I picked her up from the hospital. She couldn’t tell me anything except for her tears and incessantly crying over something. Why is she so heart-broken? What did you do to her?”

Yuri felt extremely guilty.

“Soo Young, calm down. I’ll tell you what happened.”

So Yuri told Soo Young everything. There were gasps and pauses including silence in between the conversation. Yuri knew Soo Young was thinking of something but she didn’t dare to intrude. Soo Young wasn’t as forgiving as Yoona. And she knew Soo Young hated her guts so much because Yuri broke Yoona’s heart before.

“So you knew about Yoona and Jessica?”

“I saw them together before.”

“Sigh, I should have known such thing would happen.”

Yuri was surprised when Soo Young said that.

“I was the one who put them together. I thought they were a matching pair.”

“They are, Soo Young.”

“But this happened. I don’t think Jessica would ever believe in Yoona or anyone else.”

Yuri bit her lower lip. She was not willing to let Yoona’s happiness fly by just like that.

“Soo Young, do you need my help?”

“What? How can you help them?”

“Tiffany had a good talk with me earlier on. I told her about Jessica and Yoona. Tiffany felt really bad and I feel guilty for causing Yoona’s heart to be broken again. It was not her fault; it was ours. We can talk with Jessica about this.”

“You think Jessica would listen to you?”

“I’m sure she would if Tiffany talks to her.”

“Tiffany still loves her, doesn’t she?”

Yuri acknowledged it.

“Kwon Yuri, are you stupid or what?”

“Why did you say that?”

“How could you stay with someone who doesn’t love you the same way anymore?”

Yuri sighed softly. She didn’t mind it anyway. And she could totally understand why Soo Young felt that Yuri was silly like that.

“I promised her before that I’d stay by her side if she needed me. Maybe my destiny is with Tiffany. I don’t mind staying by her side even though her heart may not be with me anymore.”

“Oh my god, you’re doctor but you’re a complete idiot when it comes to love.”

“I acknowledged that, Soo Young. Maybe this is how I’m supposed to live my life.”

“You’re insane, you know that? You let go of Yoona who loved you so much; and did you remember how the both of you fell in love?”

How could Yuri forget that moment? It was almost magical.

“Yuri, did you know Yoona wanted to kill herself 3 days after you left?”

“WHAT?!”

“Hyoyeon found her. If my girlfriend didn’t find Yoona earlier, Yoona would have been dead by now, Yuri.”

Yuri was stunned.

-

Yuri returned to Korea after completing her studies in UK. She had a doctorate in medicine and she took up physiotherapy as her major. She returned to Korea after 5 years and her parents were ecstatic to have her back home. They were proud of Yuri – their only daughter, Dr Kwon Yuri. She was immediately accepted by Seoul National Hospital and Yuri finally settled down.

But Kwon Yuri was a changed person. Her parents knew what happened to her; their daughter came back as a broken-hearted girl but Yuri tried her best to do well in her studies. They knew Yuri didn’t want them to worry about her but they couldn’t help but wondered if Yuri had totally got over her broken relationship with her first love.

Yuri never mentioned anything much but she remained cheerful for the sake of her parents. But her older brother knew Yuri hasn’t really gotten over the relationship yet. She was confiding in him all this while.

“Yuri, how are you?”

“Oppa, I’m in so much pain.”

“Does Tiffany know you’re back in Korea?”

“Yes, she does. She kept apologising for breaking my heart.”

“Do you still love her, Yuri?”

Yuri shrugged her shoulders. She couldn’t say anything much.

-

Yuri bought an apartment closer to her parent’s place. She wanted a place of her own and her father agreed to let her live on her own. She promised to find a place nearer to them and she did. The apartment was pretty small but cozy and Yuri fell in love with it. It was a studio with just one bedroom. Yuri moved in and she found peacefulness while having her own freedom and personal space to live with.

Her parents saw the change in her and acknowledged that this might be a better choice for their daughter. Yuri had always been independent and this gave Yuri a chance to grow in her style. Yuri slowly got over the heartbreak and returned back to her normal self. Her family was really happy for her.

Yuri became more active and she visited the gym just below her house very often. The gym was one of the main contributing factors for her to choose this place. She had checked out the gym before the apartment and realized that the equipment and programmes there were suited to her needs. So Yuri hung out at the gym more often when she had the free time; she developed firm abs and healthier body. She also made some good friends especially with one of the trainers – Ok Taecyeon.

“Yuri-shi, you’re here again.”

“I just finished work and needed some work out.”

“You’re stressed out at work?”

“Yeah, as usual but anyway, I’m hitting the weights first.”

“Okay, I’ll see you later. I have a new client. She’s coming over later on.”

“Sure, don’t bother about me. I’ll take note of my own training.”

“Okay!”

Taecyeon smiled before patting on Yuri’s shoulder lightly. He left her alone and Yuri some music on the background. Kwon Yuri was a woman of steel; she took up boxing which Taecyeon had introduced and enjoyed that new sport ever since.

She was lifting weights to tone up her muscles when she saw a young lady walked in through the front door. Taecyeon was in the washroom. The lady sat at the nearby bench and Yuri continued her weight training.

Yuri was facing the mirror as she lifted the weights; she was breathing in and out as her muscles crunched when she lifted the weights. She was too concentrated that she didn’t realize someone was watching her.

“Yoona-shi, you’re here!”

Yuri glanced to her side. Taecyeon was with the lady.

“Hey Taecyeon-shi, I’m sorry I was a little late.”

“No worries, I’m just glad that you’re here. How are you? It has been a long time since I last saw you.”

“That’s right, after you graduated from university; we didn’t see each other anymore, right?”

“Yeah, my god! You’ve grown really beautiful!”

“Yeah, right! I’m still so skinny.”

“You won’t be anymore. We’ll start training and you’ll have perfect abdomen just like Yuri over there.”

Taecyeon was pointing to Yuri and the latter was taken aback. She could see the lady smiling at her through the reflection in the mirror and Yuri returned it with a shy smile.

“Let me introduce her to you.”

And that was the beginning of a new friendship between Yuri and Yoona.

-

“Arghhhh~~~!”

Yoona was screaming into the air as she did her final set of cardio exercises. She wanted to die, literally and fell flat to the ground after a hundredth push-up.  She was breathing heavily and Taecyeon did a high five with her; Yoona glared at him.

“You did well!”

“You almost killed me!”

“Oh come on, you’re getting better and it’s only the third week.”

“My muscles are crying out for help!”

“You’re such a funny person. You were the one who didn’t stop.”

“Let me whine. I’m allowed to!”

“Fine, fine. Here, drink this. Let’s stop here for tonight.”

“That’s it?!”

“You want more?!”

Yoona looked at Taecyeon nervously; she’s having a meeting tomorrow so she better not risk it.

“Nah, I’ll be fine. But let me do some weights to cool down.”

“Sure, just do the simple ones. I’ll see you next week!”

“Okay!”

Yuri was watching them all the while. Yuri was amused with Yoona. She had seen her trained before; most of the time the girl was whining but her stamina and energy level never died out. She just wanted to whine because she knew Taecyeon wouldn’t yell at her.

She has seen Yoona a couple of times; there were times when Yuri caught Yoona dancing in the studio where Taecyeon would conduct his boxing lessons. Yoona hated boxing so when the studio was empty; she would turn on some music and dance to it.

Yuri was fascinated by her moves. But Yoona was completely unaware of Yuri’s presence. She was totally a different person when she started dancing. Yoona was going to dance again tonight. Yuri saw her peeping through the door and realized the studio was empty. She could see Yoona’s cheeky smile and Yuri giggled to herself. Yoona was such a prankster.

Yoona was wearing her track-pants and her shirt was already exposing her firm abdomen. That was the first time Yuri saw her flat tummy. Yoona’s slender built and slim body was just to die for. Yuri couldn’t help but staring at Yoona’s flat tummy as the latter danced.

Yuri was watching her quietly when suddenly Yoona fell on her back when she did a somersault and missed her landing.

“Ow!”

Yoona screamed out in pain. It was a nasty fall and Yuri was already running forward towards her.

“Are you okay?”

Yuri knelt down beside her.

“Heh?”

“Sorry, I was watching you dancing just now.”

“Oh.”

Yoona’s cheeks turned crimson red and Yuri was amused.

“Why are you blushing?”

“Nothing! I’m fine!”

Yoona tried to move but her back was hurting like mad. She winced in pain and Yuri was already putting her hand behind Yoona.

“Be careful; I think you might hurt your back. Let me help you.”

Yuri slowly put both of her arms behind Yoona to support her back and then lifted her up carefully. Yoona was blushing like mad and Yuri was tickled by her reaction.

“Is everything alright?”

“Ye-s-ss.”

“Hang on, I’ll bring you up to my place.”

“HUH?!”

“I’m a therapist. Let me check if you have any serious injuries with your back.”

Yoona’s face was completely red.

-

Days went by and Yuri got closer with Yoona. Yoona’s back was fine. Yuri did a massage and Yoona was visiting her more often than usual. The two ladies got closer and almost spent their time together every single day. Yoona came for her training and this time, she did her own training with Yuri. Taecyeon knew something was going on between them but he just kept quiet. The ladies would figure out themselves; he reckoned.

Yuri was enjoying her moments with Yoona. She felt really happy whenever she was in Yoona’s company. They did a lot of stupid things together like playing a prank on Soo Young, Yoona’s best friend. She was introduced to Yoona’s friends along the way and Yoona suddenly declared that Yuri was her best buddy much to Soo Young’s chagrin.

Tiffany was long forgotten and a certain someone was slowly filling up the emptiness in Yuri’s heart. But Yuri didn’t dare to confess; she was still scarred by her past relationship with Tiffany. She still dreamt of Tiffany at night but when Yoona entered her life; she was slowly recovering from her broken-heart.

Things went really good with Yoona until one day. Yoona called her up and told her to dress well. Yuri’s a doctor so she didn’t have many dresses to wear. She got Soo Young’s help and borrowed a nightgown from the taller lady.

“Are you going out on a date?”

“Yoona called me to dress up.”

“Oh?”

Soo Young had that wicked; cheeky smile on her face.

“What?”

“What? What?”

“Why are you smiling like that?”

“Nothing, here. This is going to kill all the other ladies!”

“What?”

“Nothing, I’m just excited like that. But this is the dress that got Hyoyeon’s attention.”

“You seduced Hyoyeon in this gown?”

Soo Young blushed and Yuri was smiling sheepishly.

“It’s not seducing but Hyoyeon was attracted to me because of this gown.”

“Oh, it really looks great.”

“Good! So kill Im Yoona with this dress.”

“Huh?”

“Kwon Yuri, you like Yoona, right?”

“NO!”

“Haha, have fun!”

Yuri was red-faced the whole night.

-

“Wow…..”

Soo Young was right. Yoona’s eyes were almost popping out. She was pretty herself but Yuri was definitely the most outstanding between the two ladies that night.

“Hi?”

“Err, hi gorgeous!”

“Yoona, why are you drooling?”

“I’m not! Never mind, let’s go!”

Yoona grabbed hold of Yuri’s hand tightly and pulled her along. Yoona was planning something which Yuri wasn’t too sure about. There were flowers in Yuri’s seat as Yoona pulled the car door for her.

“Thanks.”

“Here, this one for you.”

“Wow, this is lovely.”

Yoona grinned. Yuri was slightly flushing in her cheeks. This was a date; Yoona was taking her out for a date.

“Are you feeling hot?”

“No, it’s okay.”

“I am.”

“Huh? Why?”

“I have a gorgeous lady beside me; and she’s so freaking hot tonight!”

Yuri was blushing like hell. Yoona was such a teaser and had the sweetest tongue. Yuri felt extremely good that night. She was the one who used to chase after Tiffany but now it was the other way around. Yoona was wooing her. And that girl really knew her stuff well.

They had dinner together; and Yoona brought her back to her house. Yoona’s apartment was slightly bigger than Yuri’s but it was beautifully designed. Yuri knew Yoona’s an architect but she did some interior designing as well.

Yoona was romantic in many ways. They had wine and Yoona put on some soft music that night. They were talking; chatting about everything and anything. Yuri hasn’t spoken about Tiffany in many months but Yoona was so persuasive and Yuri confided in her. Tears couldn’t be avoided as Yuri teared up as she spoke about her broken love with Yoona.

Yoona was attentive; her hands were slowly caressing Yuri’s arms as a form of encouragement and at times; her fingers would be wiping Yuri’s tears away. Yuri knew that her heart was taken again this time and Yoona was the culprit.

Suddenly the silence was filled with intense staring and Yuri was concentrating at Yoona’s lips all the time. They were too inviting and Yuri couldn’t stop imagining how sweet those lips would taste on hers. But she didn’t have to wait long.

“Kwon Yuri, I’m in love with you.  I fell in love with you from the very first time I set my eyes on you.”

Yuri was stunned. The first time they met was at the gym.

“I saw you lifting weights; looking all so gorgeous and hot. You were breathing in and out as your muscles crunched the weights. I was falling hard and madly in love with you and I still do.”

Yuri’s eyes were filled with tears.

“But as days went by, you were still a very reserved person. You didn’t really enjoy watching lovey dopey movies; you would always look away when Soo Young and Hyoyeon have their sweet moments together (well, I hate them sometimes too!) but I know you were hurt before because you always have this dazed gaze in your eyes each time a couple walked past us.”

Yuri was surprised at how attentive Yoona was. She was watching Yuri all the time.

“I know I have to be different and I know I must be sincere in confessing my love for you. So that’s why I chose to chat with you tonight; instead of doing the normal dating game. Well, maybe you’re overdressed but I like it that way. You’re so gorgeous, Kwon Yuri. The person who left you had no idea what she was missing out.”

That was how Kwon Yuri fell for Im Yoona. Yoona’s perfect and her definition of love were just so simple and sincere.

Yuri fell in love with Yoona beautifully.

-

The relationship was flawless; Im Yoona was the greatest and sweetest girlfriend Yuri could ever need from anyone. They were completely in love and Yuri poured her feelings out to her only love; slowly forgetting about her broken past.

Her parents love Yoona and her mother in particular really loved Yoona a lot. Yoona grew up without her mother but she was as perfect as she could be; filial and polite towards the elders. Yuri’s older brother was fond of Yoona too and Yuri knew she had found the perfect girlfriend.

They had so much fun together; Yoona’s love was unconditional. Yuri was completely smitten with her and they would kiss all night on Friday nights as they hung out in Yuri’s apartment. Yoona’s kisses were sweet and her lips tasted like heaven.

Their first night was almost perfection and Yuri had a whiff of what heaven could have smelt like. Yoona was simply gorgeous without her clothes and Yuri couldn’t have enough of her. Yoona was surprisingly shy and it was Yuri who was bold enough to make the right moves and touches. They were almost in-sync and Yuri often teased Yoona whenever the feeling was right.

But all that was just for a while when Yuri bumped into her old flame – Tiffany Hwang. The lady was in Korea with her new girlfriend; living together just few blocks away.

-

Tiffany was completely foreign in Korea. She grew up most of her time in US and her girlfriend was often busy with her work. Tiffany followed her back because they would be married soon and Tiffany didn’t want to spend her time away from her girlfriend.

Yuri was often caught up with jealousy and envious of Tiffany’s new girlfriend. She spent time with Tiffany; taking her around Korea much to Yoona’s chagrin.

They often quarrelled over Tiffany. Yoona didn’t really like the idea of Yuri spending most of the time with Tiffany. Yuri didn’t really think much of it because she loves Yoona. But Yoona was a different person when it comes to jealousy.

Yoona often accused of Yuri for having feelings for Tiffany which drove Yuri mad sometimes. They fought all the time but Yuri would be the one who would apologise because technically; it was her stubbornness that got Yoona mad with her.

But one day Tiffany came running to her and told her about her illness, Yuri was caught in between. She was torn between Tiffany and Yoona. Tiffany refused to let her girlfriend know and Yuri refused to let Tiffany be on her own.

So one thing led to another and Yoona was left heart-broken. Yuri was heartbroken too but she couldn’t let her first girlfriend living on her own; struggling to come terms with her medical condition.

-

Yuri’s eyes were watery as she reminisced those moments with Yoona. And now she was indirectly causing the heartache that Yoona was feeling right now. Yuri wanted to make amends and she knew she had to do it fast.

“Yuri?”

Yuri turned to find Tiffany smiling at her.

“Oh, you’re awake?”

Yuri went over her and carried Tiffany who was sitting in her wheelchair. She lifted Tiffany up and placed her comfortably on the sofa. Yuri sat next to her after that.

“Have you decided what to do?”

Yuri nodded.

“Let’s put them back together, Tiffany.”

Tiffany nodded as tears fell.

“Yes, let’s put Yoona and Jessica back together.”

Yuri hugged Tiffany tightly and then whispered softly in her ears.

“I’ll stay with you, Tiffany. You still have me.”

Tiffany nuzzled her face into Yuri’s chest as Yuri strengthened her grip around Tiffany’s body.

Yoona, I’ll help you. Let me make amendments for the pain I’ve put you through.
