Chapter 1

Attention

Chapter 1

The rain was pouring down and creating huge puddles on the road, but nobody cared about the bad weather. People were walking down the sidewalks with huge umbrellas, laughing and talking like they hadn’t even noticed that the rain was creating a chaos among the cars.

Among all the black umbrellas and the sea of people, there was one figure, which stood out. The yellow umbrella, where thousands of small drops of rain were falling from, were almost shining like a neon sign in the darkness. Under it, its owner were standing, looking around with an impatient look in her eyes.

She was tired and just wanted to go home, but because she had lost track on time, she was now forced to wait for her friend to come and pick her up.

She tapped her foot against the wet pavement and looked around, trying to spot the familiar face she had known since her childhood.

“Lee Joon, where are you?” she mumbled to herself and looked up towards the skies. Although it was night and the skies were dark, she couldn’t see that stars, the thousands of lights from Seouls tall buildings were outshining the starts and almost the moon.

She quickly looked down again before the rain could make her clothes more wet than it already were.

Suddenly a pair of arms sneaked around her waist and pulled her back, so she almost dropped the yellow umbrella. She was about to hit the person behind her, to kick him and push him to the ground, until she noticed who it was.

“YAH Lee JOON!” She yelled and hit him over and over on the arm, gaining attention from the people who walked by. “Don’t scare me like that!”

Joon only laughed as he grabbed the yellow umbrella from her hands.

“You should have seen yourself,” he said with a grimace on his face as he tried to hold back his laughter.

“It’s not funny” Hyuna said and let a hand run through her long brown hair, which was humid because of the rain. “You are not funny, only annoying”.

They started to walk down the sidewalk, bodies pressed close up against each other, so they wouldn’t get lost from each other.

Hyuna quickly grabbed Joons arm and looked up at him with a smile plastered on her face. They had known each other since the beginning of Elementary School, where they had been placed beside each other in every class. Since then, they had been inseparable.

“Hey Hyuna,”

Hyuna looked up to meet a pair of brown eyes staring down at her.

“What were you even doing at the library this late?” he asked and tightened the grip around the umbrella as the wind became stronger.
It was in the middle of spring, but everything reminded about the fall. The trees were still without any leaves at all, the rain was still falling and the mornings were still cold and dark like the night. Spring was normally a time, where everything should be filled with joy and happiness because of the new life of the nature, but to Hyuna it wasn’t anything special. Nothing were.

“Studying,” Hyuna answered and placed her arms around herself in an attempt to block the wind from hitting her body more than it already did. “What else should I do?”

“I don’t know,” he said and pulled on his shoulders, lifting the umbrella a few centimeters up in the air so the rain hit them. “You’re just always sitting there, reading stuff”.

Hyuna sighed and grabbed Joons arm again as the walked. Among them laughter and loud talking could be heard, the sound of music playing in the clubs could be heard everywhere, drunk people staggered around and sang loud to one of Girls’ Generations songs.

A few minutes went by like this, where they just walked in the rain, linked together and smiling.

Hyuna kept looking around, her eyes falling on teens who were stumbling over each other, laughing every time one of them got hurt, all of them with a Soju bottle or a cigarette in between their fingers.
They all seemed so carefree and filled with no worries or thoughts about the consequences. They all seemed so free and happy.

How she wished that she could be a part of that, being free and have a more exciting life than repeating the same things day after day, going to school and then going home again.

As they walked past the drunk teenagers, an idea suddenly popped up inside her head. Beside them were huge clubs with bouncers and colorful neon signs and long queues of people.

“Hey Joon!” Hyuna said with a smile on her lips as she got his attention. “I have an idea”.

“And what is that?” He asked and smiled down at her, happy to see that the smile had returned to her lips once again.

“Let’s go out and have some fun,” She said, her voice filled with excitement as she grabbed Joons hand and started to drag him towards one of the many clubs.

She felt his muscles tens as she tried to drag him towards the door, but before she even got a chance to do anything she was dragged backwards and ended up with bumping into a hard chest. She quickly looked up at Joon, only to see him starring down at her with a serious glare.

“No Hyuna,” he said and grabbed her arm to pull her away from the club. “It’s dangerous in there!”

She couldn’t help but pout as Joon continued to drag her away from the club and loud music. For some kind of reason, she knew that Joon would have reacted this way, she had tried this trick many times before and every time he said no and gave her a long lecture about how dangerous and bad it was.

It had always been like this, no partying, no drinking, and no being out in the middle of the night. Her parents had always told her about how dangerous the downtown were and how only bad people and criminals lived there. They always told her that, if she ever entered a club, got drunk, or even just tasted a cigarette, her future would be destroyed and they would disown her.

She had heard those words so many times now, that she didn’t believe in them any longer. When she had been younger, she didn’t even dare to go against her parents, which to their pleasure had been a good thing, but all that changed when she went to high school. High school meant new friends and most of all a new social environment.

She had been happy about the new people around her, they had learned her that there was more in the world than just staying home and hiding in your room. They had several times tried to get her to a party, to get her drink and have some fun, but every time she tried to get out Joon, Jihyun, Gayoon or whoever found out, would stop her.

“We should just go home,” Joon said and tightened his grip around her arm so she couldn’t drag him after her again. “You know, there’s only bad people at a place like that”.

Hyuna only shook her head and sighed with a longingly glare in her eyes as she looked back towards the club. Why even try?

They continued to walk in silence until the music started to get lower and lower until the sound of cars and the wind was the only thing there could be heard. The noise from the center of Seoul was now gone and a small residential neighborhood were shown. Apartments in reddish bricks could be seen down the entire street, with small fences separating the apartments from the sidewalk, small green trees was placed behind the fences and lampposts were shining down onto the pavement.

They walked towards the apartment, where the lights still were , until Hyuna stopped and turned towards Joon, who was standing by the edge of the small staircase with his hands in his pockets.

“I’m sorry Joon… you know, about before,” Hyuna sighed and looked down at her feet. “It was stupid of me”.

She felt a pair of arms lock themselves around her as she was being pulled in for a hug. She felt so small in the embrace of the taller boy, she almost felt like a little child.

“It was stupid,” Joon said with a smile on his lips as he pulled away to look down at her. “But it’s alright… it’s always alright when it comes to you, and you know it”.

She looked up to meet a pair of brown eyes, which almost reminded her about a puppy’s eyes. There had always been something about Joon, which she always had liked, and that part was his eyes. Even if he was tired or simply just bored, his eyes were almost smiling; he was always wearing an eye-smile.

She pulled away as the sound of something tapping against a window, sounded behind her. With her hands placed on Joons shoulders, she gave him one last smile, before she told him goodnight and walked inside.

She quickly took her pink jacket off and hung on the coat rack, which already were full of dark and sand-colored coats and jackets. Under the coat rack, numbers of shoes were placed, where she now placed her own.

The hall wasn’t that big, if you wanted you could place six people in there. The walls were painted in light colors, the same was the wood floor. A small table, with a lamp on it, was placed right beside the door, where keys and letters were being stores, plants were placed in the corners and family pictures hung on the wall.

“Umma! Appa! I’m home,” She yelled towards the living room, where the sound of TV could be heard, before she ran up the stairs towards her room. As she ran up the stairs she couldn’t help but let her eyes wander over the pictures which hung on the wall. There were all kind of pictures, from family pictures to pictures of her, her brother, some flowers etc.
Normally she would always stop when she looked at the picture of herself. She always thought that she looked rather empty as she smiled towards the camera, her smile wasn’t real, everybody could see that, everybody except her own parents and friends.

With one last sigh she continued to walk towards her room, where she slowly and silently closed the door behind her to enter a small room. Her room wasn’t anything special. It was small with white walls and a wooden floor, a bed was placed right beside the window, a big white closet was being squeezed into a corner and a small table was taking up most of the space in the middle of the room. Pictures hung on the walls and big, heavy curtains were covering the window. Light chains hung from the ceiling over the bed and reminded about thousands of small stars on the night skies.

With heavy steps she dragged herself towards the bed where she immediately let herself fall down head first. She laid there for a couple of minutes, until the feeling of regret started to take over her beating heart.
She always knew that, it would end up like this, her, lying there and thinking about the things she should have done. She always ended up regretting not doing what she wanted, she always regretted how Joon could keep her from having some fun, but in the end, she never did what she really wanted.

With a quick motion, she turned around, facing the ceiling, which was painted with different shadows from the light outside, thoughts filling her head and making her heart beat with regret.

Why couldn’t she just do what she wanted to do?
