~ 1 The Beginning ~

The World As I See It

Plain.

Old.

Boring.

Nothing.

There’s nothing worth reading in here.

The books left in this house, I mean.

I can’t live without amazing books.

Reading is like my best past time.

Next to sleeping that is.

Why did our dad even plan to move back here again?

I don’t even remember much of my child hood here.

They told me that we used to live here when I was young.

And that was it, because I can’t even remember living in this town.

It’s because my parents decided to live in the city.

They need to be there. That’s where their job is.

And then my baby sister came along, Krystal.

But after her birth our parents became even busier.

They only went home sometimes.

We only had private tutors who guided us.

Maids who took care of us.

It was pretty boring in our house.

Others would call it a mansion.

If it weren’t for my sister and reading, I would have been insane by now.

They’ve never even seen us grow up, our parents.

Maybe mom did.

Just a little bit.

Then something happened.

She died.

Our mom died.

Dad said she was caught in a car accident.

Probably, she was.

It was all over the news.

“Wife of JGC’s CEO, caught in a car accident.”

That was it for our mother.

She lived a short but I must say a meaningful life.

After that, our dad decided for us to move back here.

In little old Green Town.

This was where our parents grew up.

Where they met each other, and fell in love.

Where I was born and where I spent a few of my child hood days.

I wasn’t actually happy that we’re gonna live here again.

This place is a total stranger for me.

Same as my sister.

She wasn’t even born here.

But I guess this is what our father wants.

To rest for a bit.

For the atmosphere to cool back down before he returns.

Yes. You heard me right.

He’s the only one going back in the city.

He wants us to stay.

Said it’s a lot better living a quiet life here rather than living a busy and head splitting life in the city.

Dad isn’t like one of those demanding fathers.

He’s more of the protective type.

He doesn’t even want us to take over his place at the company until he’s old enough to manage it.

He wants us to be free and to enjoy life while we’re young.

He’s awesome that way.

He may not be able to see us grow up but he always wants the best for us.

Our mom probably thinks the same.

She has always been there for us, maybe not physically but she’s always been with us.

I don’t hate my parents.

I understand that they only want what is best for me and my sister.

My sister’s smart enough to notice that too.

Anyways, that’s enough reminiscing.

I haven’t even unpacked some of my things yet.

I should start unpacking again.

Before my sister goes here and nags me about it.

Oh man, someone’s knocking.

I think I know who that is.

“Who is it?”

“Who else do you expect? Daniel Henney?”

“That would be great but heh, in my dreams.”

“I know right? Why don’t you just open the damn door, Jessica unnie?”

“It’s open. Come in. And stop saying bad words!”

The door then opens.

“It isn’t a bad word. And I’ve heard you used that word a lot of times too.” Krystal sat by the edge of my bed.

“Well, I’m older.”

“So? Doesn’t mean you’re more mature than I am, unnie.” She stuck her tongue out.

“Are you challenging me right now, Soojung?”

“No. Just saying.”

“Now that’s a good girl.”

“Whatever unnie. What are you doing?” She asked.

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m unpacking some of my things.”

“I see.”

“Of course you can see it. You have eyes, dumb dumb.”

“Why are you always so sarcastic, unnie?”

“It is how I show my love for you, dear sister. You should be aware of that.”

“Oh I am aware. Big time.” She rolled her eyes.

“Can you help me with this?”

“Sure, unnie.” She sits up and went where I was standing. Then she tried to carry the box. “Oh god, this box is heavy! What’s in it? I think my back’s gonna break!”

“Just put it right beside my study table. Thanks!”

“Sheesh. You’re always demanding.” She said while rubbing her back.

“Get used to it.”

“I’ve gotten used to it since I was born.”

“That’s great.”

“Great for you, not for me. What’s in the box anyways?” She asked again.

“My books. What else could it be?”

“I don’t know.. cucumbers, maybe?” She grinned.

“You wanna die young?”

“Oh please, spare me.” She said with sarcasm.

“You’re so sarcastic, Soojung.”

“Learned it from the best. That’s you.” She smiled wildly.

“Tell me, why do we always have this kind of conversations?”

“Beats me. We’ve grown up this way.” She has a point there.

“Guess so.”

“Are those books really important?”

“Yes! Without them I wouldn’t have survived with just bothering you.”

“Should I thank the books, then?” She glared at me.

“I’m just telling the truth. Maybe you should.”

“Yah! You’re so mean, unnie.” She pouted.

“I’m just kidding, Soojung. Books are just a part of my life now, like you are.”

“Is reading really that important for you?”

“Of course it is. While reading a book, it’s like the only place where I can think freely. It’s where I can imagine things that are out of the ordinary, things that we can’t see in this world, characters that can only live inside a book.”

“You really are that into it. Reading, I mean.”

“You can say that. It’s fun to read.”

“You only read fictional books.” She crossed her arms.

“What can I say? Fictional books have always been the best genre for me.”

“You have always love Twilight. Not to mention Harry Potter. And that, uh, what is it called again? Percy Jackson and the hooligans?”

“Dummy. It’s the OLYMPIANS. Where did you get hooligans from?”

“Yeah. Sure. Whatever.” She stared at me blankly.

“Why do you always have that expressionless face?”

“I should ask you the same question, unnie.”

“Eyyy. You’ve grown mature, kid.” I ruffled her hair.

“I know that, unnie. And what are those in your desks? A new set of books?”

“Two new sets, actually. The Mortal Instruments and Beautiful Creatures.”

“Augh. I can see your eyes shimmering while explaining it. I’ll just leave you alone, so you can return to your silent sanctuary.” She air quoted.

“Fine. Do what you wanna do.”

“Are your things for school ready, unnie? Classes are starting in a week.”

“Yeah. Yeah. They’re ready. Now, shoo. I shall begin reading.”

“If you say so. Later then, unnie. Dinner’s at 7.” After that she closed the door.

I then turned to my study table and grabbed a book.

Reading, reading and reading.

That’s what I’m planning to do the whole afternoon.

Now, this is life.
