Mermaids part 1

Dark Side

Sunggyu lay in bed, thinking about Woohyun, to be more specific, he was analyzing the younger male’s behavior in hopes of finding some answers. He was more than a little frustrated that Woohyun hadn’t told him anything yet. But he kept remembering Mi Seon’s words about complete trust taking time, and knew he couldn’t force Woohyun into telling him anything.

On the other hand, it did seem like Woohyun had begun to trust him more lately, but maybe that had happened because Sunggyu had been more open with him as well. “That seems to be the key,” Sunggyu figured. “If I’m more open with him, maybe he’ll do the same with me…” He mulled over this, when his bedroom door opened and Woohyun came in with a tray of hot chocolate and cookies.

“Hyung? You still awake?” Sunggyu sat up, as Woohyun put the tray down on the night stand beside the bed. He handed Sunggyu a cookie before hopping on the bed beside him.

“Mom made cookies?” Sunggyu asked.

“No, I did.” Woohyun answered. “Are they good?”

“They taste just like my mom’s.” Sunggyu mumbled through mouthfuls of cookie.

“Is that a good thing?” Woohyun asked, and grinned when Sunggyu nodded happily.

“So what’s up?” Sunggyu asked after swallowing.

“I think its time I stop staying here.” Woohyun said, looking down at his lap.

“…If its about money—.”

“Hyung…I can’t live with you and your mom forever…” Woohyun sighed. “I have to go back…”

“You can’t!” Sunggyu sputtered. “That place is dangerous! I still don’t know why you have all that weird stuff there, but I won’t let you go back there! Just sell that place, and come live here!” Sunggyu demanded, and then paused when he realized what he had implied. “I-I mean until you find a better place.”

They locked eyes for a few seconds, before Sunggyu looked away, embarrassed. “Woohyun, you don’t have to—.”

“Gyu hyung…” Woohyun leaned closer, making Sunggyu uncomfortable.

“W-what?” Sunggyu backed away, but Woohyun kept coming closer, until Sunggyu’s back was pressed to the bed frame. “W-Woohyun what are you…?” Suddenly everything started shaking and a loud voice rang out.

“Sunggyu…Sunggyu!” Sunggyu opened his eyes slowly, and then quickly closed them when light dared to enter them. “It was just a dream…” He thought.

His mom was hovering over him, shaking him and pulling at his comforter. “Wake up already!”

“…mom…what is it?” Sunggyu groaned, as he sat up and glanced at his alarm clock.

“I’m going to work now.”

“…So?”

“So wake up already and go eat breakfast with Woohyun. He’s already downstairs making it. Go help him, and who knows? Maybe you’ll learn a thing or two.” She nagged, and then rubbed his head affectionately.

Sunggyu nodded sleepily. “Yes ma’am.”

 “Good.” Mrs. Kim grinned.

Sunggyu waited until he was sure his mom had left before collapsing back into bed. But sleep wouldn’t come, since his mind was filled with concern over the dream he had. “Woohyun was going to leave? Was it some kind of premonition?” Sunggyu wondered, then ruffled up his hair in frustration. “Why am I even dreaming about him? I really need to get some hobbies or something…”

♦♦♦

When Sunggyu walked into the kitchen, he spotted Woohyun, mixing something with his back to Sunggyu. He decided to scare Woohyun, and quietly crept up behind him. When he was right behind him and was about to make a grab for him, Woohyun sighed.

“Hyung I know you’re there.” He turned around with a bored expression.

Sunggyu pouted. “How’d you know?”

“I’ve been trained to hear little sounds like that. You know? To be perceptive.” Woohyun explained, and turned back around to continue his stirring. Sunggyu nodded, and stood beside Woohyun to see what he was making.

He noticed the cut on Woohyun’s chin made by the bogeyman’s sister the night before had been treated and bandaged.

“Hey…you ok?” Sunggyu reached out to touch the bandage, but Woohyun backed away slightly.

“Yeah…I’m fine.” Woohyun concentrated on his stirring, covering his chin self consciously. Sunggyu took the hint and backed off and instead made his way to the fridge. After scanning the fridge’s contents, he reached for the milk carton.

“Ah hyung…” Woohyun began, catching Sunggyu’s attention. “I was just wondering something.”

“Hm?”

“Do you have a girlfriend?”

Sunggyu choked on the milk he was swallowing down. He wiped his mouth and cleared his throat.

“W-why would you ask that?”

Woohyun shrugged. “I don’t know…it’s just that…well you know Myungsoo?”

“The vampire hunter guy?”

Woohyun nodded. “I was just thinking about what he said before…”

“About what?” Sunggyu asked.

“Y-you know…” Woohyun made a gesture with his hands, but Sunggyu merely tilted his head in confusion. “When he asked us that weird question…”

“What weird question?”

“Don’t you remember hyung?” Woohyun grumbled, not willing to spell it out for Sunggyu. “W-when he asked if we’re dating…”

Sunggyu’s immediately eyed the floor, suddenly feeling the room get a little warmer.

“O-Oh…that question.”

“I mean it just got me thinking. If we’re friends we should talk about those kinds of things with each other right? About whom the other one is dating and such…” Woohyun asked, swinging his arms around awkwardly. “So that’s why I…”

Sunggyu nodded. “Well fine, but I won’t tell you until you tell me something about you. I keep telling you all sorts of things, and yet you’re keeping all these secrets from me.”

“What’re you talking about hyung? You never told me anything about you!” Woohyun accused and pointed a greasy spatula at him.

“Ok ok…” Sunggyu jokingly put his hands up in surrender. “Just put the spatula down and then we’ll talk.”

Woohyun grinned and walked forward, causing Sunggyu to back up. “Wait…Woohyun.” Sunggyu’s paused as Woohyun kept moving towards him. “…What’re you doing?” Soon enough, Sunggyu was backed up against the fridge, and Woohyun had the greasy spatula right in front of Sunggyu’s face.

“Hyung, tell me your secrets or you’ll get the spatula treatment!” Woohyun threatened.

“…Seriously?” Sunggyu snorted. “That doesn’t even sound scary.” Woohyun frowned, and tossed the spatula behind him.

“Fine…not the spatula treatment…but the Nam Woohyun treatment!”

“And what exactly is that supposed to be?” Sunggyu didn’t seem intimidated in the least, until Woohyun grabbed both Sunggyu’s wrists and pressed them against the fridge, pushing himself closer to Sunggyu, with their faces mere inches apart.

Woohyun smirked and asked, “You want to find out?”

Sunggyu gulped, and tried to unravel his wrists from Woohyun’s grip, but all that monster fighting hadn’t gone to waste because Woohyun wouldn’t budge. Sunggyu had only one more weapon left in his arsenal.

He returned Woohyun’s smirk ten fold and asked, “Why do you want to know my secrets so badly?” However the question didn’t deter Woohyun like Sunggyu had hoped it would. Instead Woohyun leaned in, breathing slowly onto Sunggyu’s neck.

“I want to know all hyung’s secrets.” Woohyun whispered into his ear. Sunggyu couldn’t fight the heat coloring his face or the squeak that escaped his throat as he tried and failed to push Woohyun away.

“S-stop it!” Sunggyu clearly threw away all traces of maturity and manliness, as he whined and wriggled and writhed, trying anything to get Woohyun to release him.

“I give up…” Woohyun chuckled lightly and leaned his forehead on Sunggyu’s shoulder. He released Sunggyu’s wrists, and instead wrapped his arms around Sunggyu’s waist. He looked up into Sunggyu’s eyes with a delighted expression before pecking him on the cheek. “I can’t take it. You’re too cute hyung.” He watched amusedly as Sunggyu shoved him off, still red in the face.

“W-what—y-you…” Sunggyu pointed at him, still flustered and unable to form proper sentences. Woohyun grinned at Sunggyu’s stammering, until his phone started ringing.

“Ah just a second hyung.” Woohyun headed to the kitchen table to answer his phone, leaving Sunggyu standing there, an agitated, blushing mess. “Hello? Mi Seon noona? Ok, we’ll be there in the afternoon. Bye.” He hung up, and turned around to see Sunggyu walking up to him, with a determined expression.

He pointed at Woohyun with conviction. “You—.”

“Hyung we have another mission.” Woohyun cut him off. “It’ll be for a few days and we’re going to be staying in a hotel so you should probably pack.”

♦♦♦

“Hyung are you still mad at me?” Woohyun asked, as he followed Sunggyu into the police station that afternoon.

“I’m not talking to you.” Sunggyu grunted and marched into the office.

“Aw c’mon hyung!” Woohyun pouted and latched onto Sunggyu’s arm.

“Trouble in paradise?” Sungyeol walked up to them with Dongwoo not far behind.

“Sunggyu hyung’s mad at me.” Woohyun told them, as Sunggyu stomped off to the break room.

“Why?” Dongwoo asked.

“What did you do to him?” Sungyeol questioned Woohyun, narrowing his eyes suspiciously at the shorter male.

“Me?” Woohyun rubbed the back of his neck. “I didn’t really do anything…” But then he stopped himself and grinned, remembering Sunggyu’s cute reaction when he kissed him on the cheek.

“What’s that smile?” Sungyeol pointed at him. “You did do something to him!”

“N-no I didn’t!” Woohyun waved his hands up in protest, though his expression was as guilt filled as could be.

“He’s totally lying!” Dongwoo bounced up and down in excitement.

“Liar, liar pants on fire!” Sungyeol sang for the whole office to hear. Woohyun ignored the choding’s accusations and headed for the break room in hopes of making amends with his grumpy partner.

“Gyu hyung~” He called out as he entered the break room, but was caught off guard when he saw said partner in the middle of a conversation with a female officer. He paused, hanging in the door way, straining to hear what they were talking about.

He noticed the way Sunggyu smiled at her.

He never smiles like that with me…Ah I guess he likes girls like that…so that’s his type huh?” Woohyun thought. “Well I guess it doesn’t matter since I could never be—wait! It’s not like I want to be his type…why am I even thinking about this?!” Woohyun groaned and hit himself in the thigh continuously in hopes of erasing these thoughts.

He looked up just as the female officer was passing him. She smiled at him. Woohyun forced a small grin in return and walked over to the table Sunggyu was at. He planted himself down on the chair that was previously occupied by the female officer.

“Hyung,” He began, “honestly you could do better—.”

“Here.” Sunggyu slid a mug of coffee towards Woohyun. “Drink this. It tastes like crap and I don’t want it.”

Woohyun frowned. “That’s why I told you not to drink the coffee. Why do you think Sungyeol always brings coffee with him?” Sunggyu ignored him and started to get up. “Wait hyung!” Woohyun stopped him. “If I drink this, will you forgive me?”

Sunggyu scoffed. “Are you serious?”

“I’ll drink the whole thing ok?” Woohyun lifted the mug to his lips. “Then you won’t be angry with me anymore right?” Sunggyu merely rolled his eyes and walked off. Woohyun sighed and slumped in his chair, staring at the mug in front of him. “What should I do? I don’t even know why he’s mad…” Woohyun thought. “Maybe he needs some space?”

“For this mission you’ll be traveling to the Hysterie hotel.” Mi Seon told Sunggyu and Woohyun, as they settled into her office. “This may very well be your toughest mission yet.”

Sunggyu eyed her suspiciously. “That’s what you said last time.”

“Yes I know. But this time I mean it.” Mi Seon replied. “…Because this time you won’t be doing any fighting.”

Woohyun blinked. “What? But I always do fighting missions.”

“Woohyun, the boss and I want you to expand your range beyond just fighting. And now that you have Sunggyu with you, to ease you into difficult changes, I only thought it appropriate for you to tackle this kind of mission.”

“Ok, but what is it?” Sunggyu asked.

“Near the hotel is a beach called Atargatis Beach.” Mi Seon began. “There have been reports of men drowning and being left for dead along the beach’s shore. We think it’s the work of a mermaid.”

“So there’s mermaids too?” Sunggyu asked, not even bothering to be surprised anymore.

“Yes, however they’re very rare and mostly known to be good natured.” Mi Seon said. “However this one doesn’t seem to be. We think she seeks out men in clubs and bars, seduces them, lures them to the beach and drowns them.”

“Wait…she can walk on land?” Sunggyu questioned.

“Yes. Some mermaids have shape shifting abilities. But even if they don’t, they can easily get their hands on a potion that would do the job.”

Sunggyu nodded in response.

“I still don’t really get what you want us to do.” Woohyun said.

“I want you to go undercover and seek out the mermaid.” Mi Seon instructed. “You’ll have to go to the bars and clubs close to Atargatis Beach and pretend to be interested in her long enough for her to reveal herself. But you have to be careful to not get charmed by her, or it’ll be over for you. Since this won’t be an easy mission, you two won’t be going alone. Hmm…let’s see…” She opened the door and looked around spotting Dongwoo and Sungjong at the front desk, chattering away about something. “Jang Dongwoo, Lee Sungjong, come here.” She called them.

They exchanged looks of horror like students being summoned to the principal’s office. They hesitantly walked over to her office, and Dongwoo spotted Sunggyu and Woohyun sitting down inside.

“Oh hi guys!” He greeted.

“These two will join you.”

♦♦♦

“Can’t I go with Sungjong and the others?” Sungyeol pleaded and begged.

“No.” Mi Seon sighed. “I already told you Sungyeol, you’re going to be working with the vampire hunters to—.”

“No!” He shook his head in disbelief.

“Lee Sungyeol…” Mi Seon gave him a threatening glare.

Sungyeol cowered slightly. “B-But…those stupid hunters are so annoying. They’re all old and smelly and they keep thinking that the spots on my neck are vampire bites!”

“I’m off to the hotel! Bye hyung! Good luck dealing with the hunters!” Sungjong practically danced out of the office.

“Wait!” Sungyeol called after him. “You traitor! Take me with you!” He suddenly froze when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He slowly turned around to see Myungsoo staring at him. “Holy fu—!”

“Language Sungyeol!” Seungho called from behind them.

“Why?!” Sungyeol yelled back. “I don’t see any kids around!”

“Really?” Myungsoo piped up. “Because I think I’m looking at one right now.”

“Hardy har har! You think you’re so funny don’t you?” Sungyeol gave him a look of disgust.

“No, not really.” Myungsoo merely stared at Sungyeol as if he was an enchanted forest elf, while some female officers glanced at Myunsoo and giggled while passing by.

Sungyeol scowled at him, and then looked around. “Where’re the other hunters?”

“They left.”

“What? Why?”

“I told them to leave.”

“Why would you do that you idiot! I thought we were supposed to have a meeting.”

“We can still have a meeting.”

“How’re we supposed to do that with only two…?” Sungyeol gasped as realization donned on him. “You don’t mean…” Myungsoo smirked, as Sungyeol started to understand what he meant. The choding groaned and shook his head. “Fine, but just one.”

♦♦♦

“We’re going to the beach! The beach oh yeah!” Dongwoo sang as he skipped into the train station, followed by Sungjong, Woohyun and Sunggyu. They were taking the bullet train, since it was the fastest way to get to the Hysterie Hotel.

“This isn’t a vacation hyung.” Sungjong sighed.

“Then what’s with the camera and sunscreen!” Dongwoo accused the youngest.

“T-that’s just because…” Sungjong looked down, trying to come up with a good excuse, but failed, resulting in Dongwoo laughing at him. Woohyun who was walking beside Sungjong laughed as well, when Sungjong slapped Dongwoo’s arm.

Sunggyu walked behind the trio, feeling a little left out.

Normally Woohyun would walk beside him, but now all he could see was Woohyun’s back as he walked in front of him joking with Sungjong and Dongwoo.

When they got on the train, Woohyun immediately sat next to Dongwoo. Sunggyu stared at him and frowned, but Woohyun barely spared him a glance. Sunggyu slumped down on the chair beside Sungjong and crossed his arms.

He tried his best to ignore Woohyun making a joke and Dongwoo laughing like it was the most hilarious thing he ever heard. He closed his eyes and tried to get some sleep, since the trip was going to be a couple of hours.

“We should share a room at the hotel.” Woohyun told Dongwoo, causing Sunggyu to twitch, but he refused to open his eyes. He didn’t understand why Woohyun was being like this. Why Woohyun was suddenly so attached to Dongwoo, and seemingly forgot Sunggyu even existed.

Dongwoo grinned. “Sure…” But then he paused. “But what about Sunggyu hyung? I would think you would want to share a room with him.”

Woohyun glanced at Sunggyu, feeling super guilty. He felt like he was cheating or something, but he had to be like this in order for Sunggyu to have some space.

“He can share with Sungjong.” Woohyun said.

♦♦♦

When they got to the Hysterie Hotel, it was already well past midnight. Sunggyu went to check them in at the front desk, while Dongwoo and Sungjong scanned through the tourist brochures.

Woohyun sat in the lobby and watched Sunggyu who looked more down than usual. He wondered if something was bothering the older male, and wanted to find out what it was, to comfort him, but he held back. “Space…I have to give him space.” Woohyun reminded himself.

He walked up to Sungjong and Dongwoo just as Sunggyu was handing out the room keys.

“Come on…let’s go.” Sunggyu told Woohyun with a grim expression as he grabbed Woohyun’s wrist.

“But I’m sharing with Dongwoo—.”

“Not anymore.” Sunggyu pulled Woohyun to the elevator and closed the doors, not even waiting for Sungjong and Dongwoo to get on.

Sungjong shook his head. “There’s definitely something going on with those two.”

Dongwoo nodded in agreement. “Yeah usually Woohyun would be all over Sunggyu hyung. You think they’re fighting?”

Sungjong shrugged. “They’ll work it out.”

♦♦♦

“Why are you doing this?” Woohyun asked, as he watched Sunggyu unlock their room and open the door. He shoved Woohyun in. “What’s your problem?” Woohyun frowned, “I already promised Dongwoo—.”

“What’s your problem?!” Sunggyu cut him off. “Did I do something to you?”

Woohyun blinked. “Huh? No…what’re you talking about?”

“Then why do you keep ignoring me?!”

“Hyung I wasn’t—.”

“Yes you were!” Sunggyu threw his bag on the floor, and ripped off his jacket, tossing that to the ground as well. He sat down on the bed folding his arms.

Woohyun could tell Sunggyu was frustrated, but he couldn’t help but think that his hyung throwing a tantrum and pouting was adorable. He sat beside Sunggyu and put an arm around him. “I thought I was doing something right for once…I thought you…”

“Hyung you got it all wrong.” Woohyun said. “I wasn’t ignoring you. I was trying to give you some space.”

“Space? Why? I never asked for space! I don’t want space.”

Woohyun chuckled. “But this morning you were mad at me so I thought I should leave you alone for a bit.”

“I wasn’t mad at you though. Not really…I don’t know, I guess I was sort of mad at myself.” Sunggyu said. “Because when you’re all you know…touchy…I don’t mind it. But it’s weird. Like I feel like it should bother me or something.” He turned to Woohyun. “But its worse when you ignore me, so you’re not allowed to do that anymore got it?”

Woohyun grinned and nodded. “Yes sir!” He saluted.

Sunggyu rolled his eyes. “Don’t do that.” He sighed and slapped Woohyun’s hand down.

“Ok how about this then!” Woohyun tackled Sunggyu onto the bed.

“W-what the hell?!” Sunggyu gasped. “Didn’t you hear what I just said?”

“All I heard was, you didn’t want space~” Woohyun sang as he gazed into Sunggyu’s eyes.

“I-I didn’t even say that!” Sunggyu blushed.

“Yes you did.”

“No I didn’t!”

“You’re so cute hyung.”

“S-stop saying that…” Sunggyu refused to look at Woohyun. “I’m a man I’m not supposed to be cute. Now get off me…we have to sleep.”

“Can’t we just sleep like this?” Woohyun rested his head on Sunggyu’s chest.

“No!” Sunggyu shoved Woohyun off the bed. Woohyun pouted and rubbed his back.

“Fine…” He grumbled and went into his own bed.

“Don’t even think about sneaking into my bed while I’m sleeping!” Sunggyu warned, after he turned off the light.

Woohyun sighed, “Yes hyung…”

“Oh and one more thing.”

“What?”

“Good night Woohyun.”

That made Woohyun smile.

“Good night hyung.”
