51-
Letting You Go
You woke the next day when the nurse came in to check on you. You looked around and saw that Kibum wasn’t in the room. The nurse smiled at you when she saw that you had woken up. “Good morning! How are you feeling?”
You smiled. “Much better. I don’t feel so tired anymore but I’m really hungry now though.” You added sheepishly.
“Don’t worry, your breakfast should be here anytime now. If there is anything else that you need, just press that button.” She motioned to the button she was referring to. “But if everything goes well, you should be able to go home by tomorrow.” She added and left the room.
True enough, your breakfast came soon after the nurse had left. You wondered where Kibum was but decided to satisfy your stomach first. When you were in the middle of eating, you heard the door open and Kibum walked in, wheeling Minhyuk’s cot in front of him. Kibum gave all his attention to Minhyuk while you finished your breakfast.
“You done?” Kibum asked when you put down your spoon.
You nodded. “Have you had your breakfast?”
“Yup, I went to the cafeteria before you woke up. You need to fill that up by the way. The nurse dropped it off last night after you fell asleep.” He pointed to the piece of paper on the chair beside your bed.
You reached out and took the paper from the chair. It was an application form for a birth certificate. You filled it up after rummaging through your bag for a pen. Kibum slowly made his way to the chair, that once had the piece of paper on it, and sat down with Minhyuk still in his arms. He watched you fill out the form and when you didn’t fill out the section for the father, he cleared his throat.
“Umm, I’ve been wanting to talk to you about something actually.” He said.
You turned your head back to look at him before putting your pen down to show that he had your attention and could continue. He looked very awkward though, as if he was struggling with himself to find the right words to say.
“I don’t want to be Minhyuk’s godfather.” He blurted out. You opened your mouth to say something but he continued, “I want to be his father.”
Your eyes widened at that statement. You closed your mouth, not knowing what to say anymore but at the same time, trying to think of something to say. “Huh?” You were sure that you sounded like an idiot but that was the best you could do right now, seeing that your brain wasn’t functioning.
He pointed to the application form. “I want to be the father.”
“Why?” You were still stuck on monosyllables.
“Because… Minhyuk needs a father. Besides, it’ll only mean that I’m his father in writing and it’ll be easier for me to help him. You don’t have to read into this.”
You were baffled at what Kibum was suggesting. He was right in that Minhyuk needed a father but why would he volunteer?! You couldn’t understand that at all. “Aren’t you afraid that people might find out? You’re going to be an idol soon, remember?” You said, hopingly that it could snap some sense back into him.
“Are you going to apply for Korean citizenship for Minhyuk?” He asked.
You shook your head. “I can’t.”
“Then are you intending to become a celebrity in Korea… ever?”
You stared at him. “Are you crazy?”
He chuckled. “There you go. I don’t see how there would be any problems with me becoming Minhyuk’s father as long as his birth certificate doesn’t get submitted in Korea.”
You narrowed your eyes at him. “You seem to have thought a lot about this. You’ve been planning this, haven’t you?”
“Well…. I won’t say that I planned this but I have thought about it every now and then.” He began.
You looked at him with an eyebrow raised.
“Ok ok. I thought about it a lot. Happy?” He admitted.
You expression softened. “I understand what you’re saying and I know that you mean well but Kibummie, I just can’t let you take this risk. I don’t want Minhyuk to become a burden to you, especially not after all that you’ve done for the both of us.”
“He’s not a burden! He won’t ever be a burden to me. Please?” He pleaded.
You really couldn’t understand why he wanted this so badly. “Can’t you just be happy being his godfather? We won’t have to worry about anything if you were just his godfather.”
He sighed. “I didn’t want to have to say this but I love him, probably more than I care to admit but I’ve loved him ever since I saw him at the first ultrasound scan I went with you. I don’t want him to just be my godson. I want to be his father. Can you understand that? Will you allow me to be Minhyuk’s father, in writing, at the very least?”
He looked and sounded so sincere that there was just no way you could turn down his request without hurting his feelings. You let out a heavy breath and he knew that he had won. A huge smile spread across his face.
“Hi you, I’m your appa now. Yes, I am.” He cooed happily to Minhyuk, who had surprisingly stayed awake throughout your discussion.
You took Minhyuk from his hold and played with him as Kibum filled in his details on the application form. You pondered silently about what Kibum had just told you. Looking at Minhyuk now, you felt like you could understand Kibum. If it was possible, you felt like you loved Minhyuk even more than you did yesterday. It was as if everytime you looked at him, he made you fall in love with him all over again.
