You were at the hospital for your routine check-up and scan but this time, Kibum was nowhere in sight. He had classes to attend and you convinced him that you would be alright on your own. You didn’t want him to skip school just because of a routine check-up. He agreed, albeit grudgingly, but you also knew that he actually did care about his school work, even if he didn’t show it.

Your number appeared on the board and you headed to the doctor’s room, knocking lightly on the door before entering. “Nice to see you again, Ms. Lee.” Dr. Reed greeted you warmly. “Your husband didn’t come with you today?” He asked.

“He’s really busy today so I persuaded him you let me come on my own.” You replied.

He nodded. “Quite frankly, I’m surprised that you succeeded.” He looked genuinely surprised and you returned it with a confused one. “He’s been keeping in contact with me over these couple of weeks, asking me what sort of food you should eat, what kind of vitamins you should take, and recently, even what type of music he should let the baby listen to.” Your eyes widened in shock.

“I take that he didn’t tell you?” He grinned, finding your expression rather amusing.

You shook your head. “Um… No, I didn’t know. So sorry, he gets a little too… excited sometimes.”

Your doctor chuckled. “No no. Don’t worry. I don’t mind at all. It’s great to see that he’s so excited about the baby and wants to get involved. Many husbands do feel a little left out during their wife’s pregnancy because all the attention is around her, but your husband seems to be coping just fine. You must really mean a lot to him.” He said kindly. You smiled and nodded because you didn’t know how else to respond.

“So, how had everything been since the last time?” His voice suddenly became quite serious and you knew that he was back to ‘official business’ again.

“Nothing unusual happened but I started to feel little kicks about two weeks ago and especially when I was playing music for her to listen to.” You said.

“That’s normal. Babies can usually hear sounds from the outside from 17 weeks onwards. I know some parents who talk to their baby a lot and swear that their baby can recognise and respond to their voices but it isn’t the same for everyone. Your baby seems to respond well to the music so you should play it often.” He advised.

After that, he took your blood pressure and then drew some blood for your blood test before asking you to lie on the bed for the ultrasound scan. You tilted your head to look at the screen and saw that your baby had grown quite significantly since the last scan.

“Everything looks normal, the development of the organs look fine too. Would you like to know the of your baby?” He said after moving the transducer around and freezing the image on the screen.

You hadn’t expected to be able to know so soon. “Yes, I would!” You exclaimed, pleasantly surprised.

“Ok, you see this here?” You doctor circled an area on the screen. “These are the organs. You’re having a boy.” He concluded and gave you a small smile.

“A boy!” You said airily, you never had a preference but knowing that you were going to have a son, you could hardly contain your happiness.

After you had left the hospital and was on the way to the flower shop, you got a call from Kibum. “Hello.” You answered.

“Hey. How did the doctor’s appointment go?” He asked.

“It went alright. I found out something but I’ll tell you what it is tonight, ok?” You replied.

“What? Why?! Just tell me now.” He demanded.

“Nope, I’ll tell you when we’re Skyping with Jinki oppa and the rest. Ok, I’m at the shop already, got to go! See you tonight!” You said quickly and ended the call.

You were pretty sure that Kibum was fuming right now. It was payback for refusing to tell you about the conversation he had with Soojin. You still didn’t know even until now! You decided that you would text Soojin and tell her the news first since she couldn’t spoil your surprise. While you were texting her, your phone vibrated. You received a text from Kibum which read “You’re really mean [sad emoticon]”

You laughed out loud. You quickly sent the text to Soojin and went to work.
