4-
Letting You Go
This routine went on for 3 months, except that during weekdays, you woke up even earlier to prepare breakfast and then leave for school. Despite being only 16, you had a scholarship to go to Seoul National University and were studying for a degree in Art History. You actually managed to make a friend, Soojin, who always attended lectures with you. You were really surprised that she wanted to be friends with you because no one, except Junhyung, seemed to want to be your friend in your previous school. So when Soojin had introduced herself first on the first day of school, you quickly became close friends with her. You found out that she was 2 years older than you and that she has a boyfriend who is the same age as her.
After school though before you had to leave for your part-time job, you liked to hang out at the library to do research for your assignments or just read. The library had an extensive range of books, much more diverse than you’ve ever seen. Also, it was always quiet and peaceful there. And lately, you craved quiet more than anything.
Junhyung had been on edge recently. He took part in almost any audition that he heard of but kept getting rejected. You always cheered him on and tried to keep his spirits up by spending time with him on weekends when he didn’t have auditions to cheer him up. Sometimes, it would just be parks or the arcade or karoke and it worked in the beginning but recently, he had started to drink with the friends that he made from his auditions. He kept coming home in the middle of the night reeking of the stench of alcohol. That was exactly what happened the previous night and it had caused you and Junhyung to have a major argument. You told him that it wasn’t good for him to keep drinking and he immediately accused you of spending all your time with your new friends and forgetting all about him.
You had spent the whole night laying in bed and thinking after the argument. You were hurt that he didn’t understand that you were busy trying to juggle school and work but you also understood where he was coming from. You had been spending much lesser time with him and that on top of all the rejections he kept getting must have been really hard on him.
You breathed out a loud sigh and immediately put your hand over your mouth and looked around to see if anyone in the library noticed. Thankfully, there wasn’t anyone sitting near you. You checked your watch and saw that it was almost time for your shift to start. You quickly put your untouched assignment back into your bag and hurried to the café that was just across the university.
“-----, are you alright?” Na-eun, your fellow co-worker, whispered with a concerned look on her face when she noticed that you were staring off into space for the fifth time.
You immediately stopped stoning and gave her a small smile. “I just have a lot on my mind. By the way, where would you bring your boyfriend if you want to spend the day with him and have lots of fun?”
She thought for a moment. “Hmm, I would take him an amusement park. Why? Do you have a boyfriend?”
You quickly shook your head. “No no, my best friend needs cheering up and he’s a guy so I thought you might be able to help.”
She nodded in understanding and smiled. “Bring him to Lotte World then! He’d love it.” She said before walking past you to attend to a customer.
