Chapter 25

Someone As Cold As Me

Jessica’s POV

It was 1pm when I finally woke up. After I had woke up I headed down for some lunch. On my way to the cafe I always eat at I passed the park. There I found a familiar face. She was a little girl happily running around with a friend of hers. She was so precious. I could only smile. Before I knew it I was making my way towards the two.

“Auntie Jessica!” Hyojin’s face lite up as she realized I was walking towards them. The little girl excitedly ran towards me and hugged my legs. I looked down with a smile patting her head. “Aunt Jess I want you to meet someone!” She said grabbing on to one of my hands and guiding me to the little girl in front of us. “This is Soomi, my best friend!”

“He-hello Aunt Jessica.” Soomi bowed nervously, “I'm Soomi.”

“Why hello Soomi.” I chuckled at her cuteness.

“See Soomi I told you Auntie Jess will love you as much as I do!”

“Oh, and how much is that?” I asked her.

“This much!” She said spreading her tiny arms out as far as possible. Soomi and I giggled at her.

“Me too!” Soomi followed along and wrapped her arms around Hyojin and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

My mood suddenly went down at the sight. “Yah yah yah!! Break it up you two!!” I yelled separating the two with my hands. “Soomi you are not allowed to do that to Hyojin! You got that?”

“But Auntie Jess, Soomi loves Hyojin. That's why Soomi gave me a kiss. It's like when mommy gives me a kiss.”

“Yeah what's so wrong about that?” A voice that was all too familiar said.

“Mommy!”

“They're too young to be doing that.” I said.

“It's not like they're doing anything  ual. They're kids.” She blankly stared at me and said.

“Still you shouldn't be letting your daughter do this.”

“They do this all the time. What's the big deal? She's not your daughter.”

“...” I kept quiet. I had no right in telling her what to do. “You're right. I'll just get going then.” I said and began walking off before a tiny hand stopped me.

“Aunt Jess, can you stay and eat lunch with us? Mommy made food for us.” Hyojin pleased with her pout and big eyes. I looked up at Yujin and she let out a sigh.

“Of course I would love to.”

“Yay! Soomi, Auntie Jess is going to stay and way lunch with us!” Hyojin jumped with joy. She ran to her best friend and hugged her.

“YAH! Not too close!” I yelled at the two. Then I heard the sound of laughter next to me. She was smiling and laughing. Something I missed oh so much. A smile was spread across her face as she watched the two girls run around the playground. I didn't say anything else. When will be the next time I see her smile like this again.

“I know you like me,” she turned towards me, “but you don't have check me out.” she arrogantly said tilting her head to the side.

“Wh-what? Who said I was.” I looked away and played with my jacket.

“Whatever. Go grab the kids. I'll get lunch set up.” She said walking to the picnic table under a very large tree.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Alright dig in!” Yujin said. “I'm going to buy some drinks I'll be right back.”

“Wow it looks so good.” I said taking a bite of the sandwich in front of me. As I casually ate my food Yujin came back, but had a panicked look on her face. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“That sandwich has cucumbers in it!” She shouted.

My eyes grew wide. I quickly spit what I had in my mouth out and I immediately threw up behind the big tree next to the table. Yujin had been kind enough to hold my hair up and pat my back as I did my said business. After I was done, she sat me back at the picnic table. The sandwich was nowhere to be seen and a water was present to me.

“I’m sorry.” She lowered her head in regret, “I should have told you before I left.”

“It’s okay. It’s not your fault.” I smiled at her before taking a sip of water.

This was all so weird though. I usually would be able to smell and taste the cucumber, but I didn’t. I actually liked it? For the first time in my life. I didn’t feel sick right after either, well not until she told that there were cucumbers in the sandwich. Maybe I’m still hungover and not thinking straight. I mean today has been pretty strange so far. As I thought about the situation, the two little voices beside me broke me out of my trance.

“I’m going to miss you so much Jinnie. Make sure to always remember me and and come visit okay?” Soomi said.

“Of course! Mommy said we will always come back, don’t worry.” Hyojin gave her a reassuring smile.

I looked at them curiously. Then I turned my head towards Yujin, who already had her head turned to the side so that we wouldn’t make eye contact. She then sighed and looked down at her hands that were holding a carton of apple juice.

“We’re moving back to South Korea. I think it’d be best for Hyojin. Plus...” She explained, “I don’t like it here. Hong Kong is a great place to live, but… it’s not where I want to be. I want to see someone too. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen her. It would be nice to see her again.”

I could hear a hint of sadness in her voice. It was different from the usual monotone no emotion voice she had. Something was telling me that she wanted to go back for something more. I couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. Whoever was on Yujin’s mind was someone lucky. I hoped it was me, but who am I kidding. Why would she be thinking of me? I’m nothing to her.

End POV

----------------------------------------------------------

“Ah, it’s good to be home.” Sunny yawned as she stretched her body. It wasn’t a long flight, but it made her exhausted.

“Yeah, it really is.” Yujin said looking around gate. It hasn’t been too long since she’s been back in Korea, but a lot has already changed. Yujin looked down to see her daughters amused expression. It had been the first time since Hyojin’s been outside of Hong Kong. Everything sparked the little one’s curiosity. From security check to the airplane, she passed everything with a “wow” as her mother can remember. The little girl was especially excited when they began to fly above the clouds and that when she bombarded her mother with thousands of questions of what they were made of and what did they taste like and if birds lived in them. All of which made her mother laugh to no ends.

After claiming their baggage, there were two cars waiting for them outside, one a black van and one a black BMW. Sunny walked towards the van leaving her suitcases near the rear for the driver to load them in the back and seated herself in the passenger seat. Yujin walked towards that car and lifted up Hyojin into the van while the driver loaded their luggage as well.

“Mommy, you’re not coming with us?” Hyojin sadly asked.

Yujin shook her, giving her daughter an apologetic smile. “Mommy has somewhere to go. Jinnie has to go to with Auntie Sunny. Okay?” Hyojin nodded and hugged her mom. “Alright, be a good girl. Mommy will be back home for dinner.” With that she buckled her daughter in, gave her a kiss on the forehead, and closed the door. She then started walking towards the black BMW park in front of the van.

“Here you go Ms. Choi.” Driver Park said handing Yujin the keys, “The tank’s full and everything is running smoothly.” He then bowed.

“Thank you Mr. Park.” She said a slightly bowing as well. After starting the car, she headed out to her first destination. It has been almost 2 years since she was last in Korea. She had some catching up to do.

When she got out her car, she looked at her phone to make sure she was at the right location. When walked until she met the right stone that read, “Stephanie Young Hwang.”

That's right. Her first destination was the cemetery. She had visited this place once before. It was when she lost her memories and Sunny took her out to remember some of them. It’s not like she remembered any of them, but that's how she found out about her resentment against her father. As she stood in front of the tomb, she realized there was a piece of paper stuffed inside a mason jar that were next to the old weeping flowers. She unscrewed the top of the jar and found a letter. She opened and read it.

Dear Tiffany unnie,

I finally met her. Your angel, or should I say our angel. The one you always told me about. She’s exactly who you said she was. Stubborn, quiet, moody, but also kind, loving, and...beautiful. Don't tell her I said this, but I still think you're the prettiest girl I've seen.
We have been spending our time at the beach house ever since the accident. I brought her back though home. With Sooyoung and Sunny unnie going back in forth from the city, people began to become suspicious and would eventually find us. She also deserves someone better than me. That’s why I’m leaving. She needs to finish school and become someone great. She shouldn’t be with someone like me. A cheat, a liar… a killer.
Although I’m gone, I assure you Jessica will be safe. I won't let anything happen to her. Not matter what. Thank you. For bringing us together. I will forever be grateful to you unnie, but I have to break this bond that we have. You have showed me how evil this family is and you’ve showed me how to love. Please watch over us.

Love,
Yujin

After reading the letter she crumbled it up and tears ran down her face. She never, no she couldn’t cry. She didn’t let herself cry. She couldn’t let anyone see how weak she really was and when it came to Jessica she couldn’t help but lose it. She broke all the promises that she made and like always she did nothing about it. It was done. Nothing else could be done. Ot so she thought.

After visiting the cemetery it was already getting dark. She debated with herself on where to next and the one place she wanted to go the most was the place she tried to keep herself from. After what felt like hours of thinking she finally took out her phone, texted someone, and made her way to her next destination.

Are you awake?

Now I am. What do you want?

Can you open the door?

And why should I do that?

You know why. Please?

She’s not home.

Don’t lie to me. I know she’s home.

And how do you know that?

I have my ways. Now please open the door it’s cold out here.

Then there was a knock on the door. “What? How?” Said the girl before opening the front door revealing that person. “Yujin?”

“Hey Krys. Long time no see.” The girl in the door smiled only to have the door shut on her. She knocked on the door again. “Come on Krystal please don’t do this.” She said from the other side of the door. After a minute of waiting the door sung open again. “I know you’re mad at me, but I’m here and I have something planned. I can’t tell you what it is, but I’m to make things right.” She was then gestured to come inside the house. At that she smiled and the girl a hug.

“She’s in her room. She just got off the plan an hour ago. She might be sleeping.”

“Thank you Krys.”

“How do you even remember me?”

“I don’t, but I have your profile.” With that she headed towards the staircase.

“That’s creepy.” Krystal said stopping Yujin in her tracks and making her chuckle. Before continuing she turned around to ask the girl a question, but…

“Last door on the right.”

“Thanks!” Again she headed up to the stairs and towards the said room.

She hesitated before knocking on the door, but when she did there was no answer. She slowly opened the door and was presented with a sleeping beauty. Pun intended because there she was, Jessica. Wearing a beautiful blue dress with her high heels still on. It looked like she passed out the first chance she got. Yujin closed the door quietly and walked towards the sleeping beauty. She took off the girl’s shoes and took the blanket from under the girl and tucked her into the bed. After doing so herself she climbed onto the other side of the bed and watched the other girl sleep. She watch how the girl furrowed her eyebrows if she was the slightest bit uncomfortable and how her hair always managed to get in her face and Yujin would always sweep it back behind her ear. The night became darker and sleep soon took over the girl’s body. Her eyes slowly began to close and she was finally asleep.

---------------------------------------------------

As soon as the morning sun came up Yujin’s body began to shift. She rubbed her tired eyes and stretched her arms. Remembering where she was, she looked across at the person who was still in deep sleep. She fixed Jessica’s messy hair and admired the beauty that was present to her by the morning light. A light kiss was placed on top of Jessica’s forehead which made the latter stir.

“Jessica.” Yujin called hoping the she would wake up.

“Jessica.” She tried again.

“Hmm?” Jessica hummed.

“Wake up.”

Jessica tried to open her heavy eyelids, but it felt like an impossible job. As soon as she realized there was another body next her, she tried concentrating on the person's face. She thought her eyes were playing tricks on her though. The one person she least expect to be here was...here.

“Y-Yujin?” Jessica’s groggy voice said. Yujin only chuckled at the confused little cat in front of her.

“Wake and get ready. I’m taking you somewhere. I’ll be downstairs when you’re done.” Yujin gently said to the girl as she her hair and smiled at her.

Yujin then got out of Jessica’s bed and headed downstairs like she said. She looked around the slightly large house and made her way to the kitchen. Unexpectedly, she found Krystal already awake and eating breakfast.

“Hey! Do you want to eat?” Yujin shook her head. “Ookay~ Would you like some coffee?”

“Black please. Thank you.” Yujin bowed her head as Krystal poured her a cup of coffee. “Why are you up so early?”

“I have early class today.” Krystal said and Yujin nodded. “So tell me Yujin-ah, why are you back in town?”

“I have unfinished business.” This time Krystal nodded.

“Yujin if...If you’re going to this again...please promise me that you won’t hurt my sister again. I-I can’t see her fall apart again. The first time you left she...I can’t even explain how she was it was so bad.”

“....” Yujin could not say anything. She couldn’t promise that Jessica wouldn’t get. That’s why she kept her distance. She was determined to get away from this girl, but she keeps popping up everywhere like if Hong Kong and Seoul were small villages. How is it that in these two big cities that they meet again. BUT if she was going to break away and do what’s better for everyone, this was the first step.

“Krystal…”Yujin sighed.”I can’t promise you that she won’t get hurt, but I promise to love your sister until my last breath. I may not be able to protect her emotionally and mentally, but I will try my best to make no harm comes to her. I promise you that.”

“Th-thank you.” Krystal began crying and hugged Yujin. Yujin remained unmoved though. “Thank you.”

“Ehem!”

The two bodies sitting around the dining table looked up to see a ready Jessica in front of them. She wore a simple white T-shirt and high waist jeans with a leather jacket and her signature sunglass in hand.

“Ready to go?” Yujin asked with a faint smile. She received a quiet nod from Jessica. “Bye Krystal. Thank you for the coffee. Take care of yourself okay?”

“Take care of yourself too Yujin-ah.”

“I always do.”

---------------------------------------------------

The silence in the car was killing Jessica. She had so many questions running in her head, but couldn’t say any of them. She had no idea where the Yujin was taking them too. They had stopped by Sunny and Taeyeon’s place to pick up Hyojin, but the little one was still fast asleep. Something Jessica wished she was still doing. Yujin had told her to sleep, but she couldn’t. As she looked out the passenger window she started see the familiar landscape that they were passing by. She looked over to the driver's side and saw Yujin with a small smirk on her face. When Yujin saw that Jessica finally got where she was taking them she couldn’t help smile, but it turned out to be more of smirk.

When they arrived at the said destination Hyojin was now fully awake and excited about playing in the sand by the ocean. The spring weather was warm and today has sure been the warmest. Yujin watch as her daughter ran closer the ocean and played in the sand not too far from it. It seemed like Jessica was still in shock. She said nothing and just followed the others to where they were going.  Yujin and Jessica stopped walking as they hit the edge of the sand and silence I'm engulfed the two. Yujin laughed at her daughter having fun in the sand. She began walking g towards the girl and expect Jessica to follow suit, but she stood still.

“Come on Jessi. Let's go.” Yujin said reaching out to grab Jessica’s hand. Jessica pulled away though and shot a glare straight into Yujin’s eyes.

“Why are we here?” Jessica finally asked.

“What does it look like? We're here to have fun.”

“No Yujin. Why are we here?” Jessica now asked sternly. “You’re acting weird. First you were in my room and acting all innocent and sweet. Now you're calling me Jessi again? Do you think this is some kind of joke?”

Yujin sighed. She was hoping Jessica would just go with whatever was happening, but it seemed like that wasn't going to happen. She slowly approached the latter closing the distance between the two. This shocked Jessica a little bit or a lot. “Like I told Krystal,” Yujin moved in closer and caressed Jessica’s cheek. “I have unfinished business to do.” she whispered onto Jessica’s lips before planting her own lips on the latter’s.

After the long needed kiss the two pulled away. This left Jessica breathless and wanting more, but she knew this wasn't the place for that. After regaining her breath Jessica slowly opened her eyes to meet with a pair of eyes staring right back at her.

“Am I still dreaming?” She asked herself.

“No, you're not. I'm here and I'm going to make things right between us. I might not remember what we used be Jessica, but I promise you that we can be better. Like I said I have unfinished business and it's about time I make everything right.”

“So I'm just business you need to finish?” Jessica placed a hand on her hip and raised her eyebrow at the former.

“I mean I could take you home and make sure that I never see you again. Is that better for you?” Yujin said in the plain and very serious tone. This scared Jessica. Yujin was being serious and she immediately retracted her words.

“No, no, no,NO. I was just kidding. I didn't mean to say that.” Jessica quickly explained until a smile crept up on Yujin’s face.

“I was kidding Jessi. Plus I know how much you want me. Why would you want me to go away?”

“I don't. I never did. So don't go anymore. You hear me? If you leave me again I'll make sure to kill you myself.” Jessica scolded the younger as she hit the formers shoulder.

“Ow! Ow! Ow! Okay! Okay! I'm sorry. I promise I'll never leave you again, ever.” Yujin wrapped her arms around Jessica holding her tight as if the latter was going to run away. “Never again.”
