The Kings of Hallyu
As You Leave: A Tribute
The Kings of Hallyu
Just like Girl’s Generation with Gee, DBSK with Mirotic, and SHINee with Ring Ding Dong, there always was a time when a group releases the it song. That one song that determines their fate, and is their rocket ship to fame. For Super Junior, the song is “Sorry Sorry.”
The popular dance is known for its simple moves. The hand rubbing motion and the pelvic s are what made the dance so trademark, as well as the foot movement. After a not as successful comeback with “Don’t Don,” Super Junior knew they had to come back with something new.
The company showed them a new concept, something that would late be coined as the “SJ Funky.” The tune was something new and at first, some of the members didn’t buy it. They were a bit skeptical. This would be a different move forward in KPop. They would be going for a new look.
Donghae was all for it. “This would be the next big thing,” he confidently said. Everyone went along with it, soon getting used to the new style of song. The choreography was also designed by world acclaimed dancers. Most transforming was their new concept.
The boys all dyed their hair back to black and went for suits and ties, paving the way for a classier look in their musical genre. Their photoshoot went smoothly and when the album dropped in March of 2009, “Sorry Sorry” quickly skyrocketed to international acclaim.
They won award after award and the group quickly climbed into their current positions. The boy group was able to establish names for themselves and “Sorry Sorry” became the number one representative song for KPop. Groups everywhere mirrored their sunbae’s dance and Super Junior won first place in all the music shows they performed in.
Fans everywhere were addicted to the rhythm and the catchy dance. The album quickly became Korea’s number one selling album throughout Asia. At the end of the year, the album was awarded the Disk Daesang, the highest award for an album. The song was learned by everyone throughout the globe.
There were videos showing the dance remixes and parodies, and the song was even the exercise music for prisoners in the Philippines. The popularity of the song quickly turned Super Junior into one of the leading groups in the industry.
The group has stayed in this position ever since. “Sorry Sorry” was on Taiwan’s Kbox Music Chart for thirty consecutive weeks. This was the beginning of success, as well as the beginning of an illustrious career for the popular group. Already making a name for themselves, this album and this title track was the ultimate clutch.
As for myself, I heard “Sorry Sorry” after a friend introduced me to “Super Girl.” The smooth, classy feel of the black and white music video captivated me and I was impressed by how amazing everyone looked.
From a fangirl’s point of view, I think it would be safe to say that this era has to be one of the best eras. All thirteen members participated, with Kibum showing up in the honorary photoshoots and having some parts in the video. This was the most complete, and the most successful era.
Even to now, “Sorry Sorry” remains to be the one KPop song people think about, regardless of whether they are into the genre or not. The legend that this song has started, as well as the popularity it has is a testimony to the nickname given to them. Super Junior – Kings of the Hallyu Wave.
