Day Twenty-seven

A Month of Kim Jongdae

-LUHAN-

Seeing that she was now living in a small apartment, he couldn’t help but feel bad about her. She was a soon to be mother. Surely, she can’t live in a place like that – let alone in a city where polluted air is all around. It won’t be good for her and the baby.

He checked himself in an apartment not far from Eastwood City. At least they’ll get to see bright and colorful lights, and he would get to feed her the foods she needed. He was alone. Sehun wasn’t with him this time and it was kind of strange but since he was already in the situation, he might as well live with it. Katherine needs him most now.

‘Kat, take a rest. I’ll buy you food,’ he offered, as he made his way down the ten-storey apartment. He didn’t know where to go, and he doubted if he could ever get used to the environment. But nonetheless, he was willing to try. At least for Katherine.

-JONGDAE-

He came home at around four in the morning. He was exhausted physically, but he wasn’t tired. He couldn’t grow tired now knowing that Kris was out there somewhere, trying to hunt Katherine down.

Wu Fan, you crazy son of a .

He was sleepy but the thought of Kris getting his hands on Katherine barely made him want to take a nap. He was stressed out. She was nowhere to be found.

He opened the door to the room and made his way to their bed. Why did the sheets of the bed look so gloomy? It’s like someone died there. Inching his way towards the desk where he hid the ring, he took a seat and opened one of the cabinets.

He opened the box and the diamond ring shimmered brightly in front of his eyes.

After Luhan ate breakfast with her, he decided to buy things that she would need. He wasn’t sure at all what Katherine would need, so he decided to find the answers through the internet. He didn’t know anything about being a father so he might as well search the net.

‘Luhan, why are you up so early? You need to rest,’ Katherine went out of the bathroom and saw him in front of his laptop. Luhan faced her, ‘don’t mind me, Kat. Why are you up so early?’

‘I guess it’s what they call the morning sickness. I hate it,’ she huffed and Luhan chuckled. It was cute seeing her like a kid despite the fact that she’s a soon-to-be mother. Guess it’s in her blood.

She pouted deeper and scooted next to Luhan on the couch. She rested her head on his shoulder and sighed, ‘I’m scared, Luhan. This is all too soon, and Jongdae’s not.. with me anymore,’ she heaved a sigh and Luhan frowned.

‘Don’t you have plans on going back? I’m sure he’s hell worried about you,’ he whispered. She could only slump her head down. She knew it was her fault, yet she refused to admit it. After all, it was his wrong doing, right? He was the one who lied, not her. No matter how she tried to flip the situation around, the main cause is still Jongdae. Had he not lied to her, she wouldn’t have left.

By any chance, was she over-reacting?

‘I know you’re probably hurt, Kat, but I’m sure he’s hurting too,’ Luhan turned to face her fully before continuing, ‘you left without saying anything. How do you think he would react to that?’

She felt guilty, but at the same time, she knew what she did probably was the best thing to do at the moment.

‘I know, Luhan, but I couldn’t face him that night. I just couldn’t.’

‘You haven’t even heard his side of the story yet, and you jumped into conclusions right away.’ Luhan wasn’t accusing her. He was just telling her what happened and how she reacted childishly on the situation. Thinking that maybe he could at least try to fix things, he added, ‘I’m sure he had his reasons.’

She furrowed her brows together in confusion. Should she go back? Should she say sorry?

She stood up and went to her bed. She grabbed her phone and dialed Suho.

‘Hello?’

‘Suho, uh, it’s me,’ she squeaked. She could hear hustling sounds from the other line and she could immediately tell that Suho was walking up the stairs.

‘Suho,’ she called.

‘Hm?’ he hummed. She could sense that he was nervous about something since he took the opportunity to ask, ‘Kat, where are you?’

She thought twice if she would answer. She weighed the possibilities and when the answer wasn’t in her favor, she decided to just close about her location.

‘Look, Suho, I know he’s worried-‘

‘He’s worried sick, Kat-’

‘but please, please don’t tell him I called,’ her voice pleaded. Suho on the other line, dropped his hold off the doorknob on Jongdae’s door. Something about Katherine’s voice sounded like she was desperate and that she needed all the help she could get.

, screw this.

‘But why, Kat? I’m worried about him too. He hasn’t eaten since you’ve left,’ Suho said firmly. Her heart clenched at the thought. But no, she refused to lay down her flag.

‘Please, Suho, just.. don’t,’

‘Are you okay?’

I hope I am. Her thoughts ran off to different possible meanings of Suho’s question. Was she okay being alone? Was she okay there inside her small apartment? Was she okay mentally? Physically? Emotionally? She wasn’t sure about the context of the question, but nonetheless, she answered, ‘yes, I’m okay, Suho. Just please, don’t let him worry about me.. anymore,’ she whispered the last word as if it just slipped accidently from .

She heard Suho sigh, ‘fine, Kat. But I’m not sure if I can handle being inside this house with Jongdae knowing that I can’t tell him that I’ve talked to you.’ He sighed heavily, and so did she. They were not in the most convenient situation, but she knew it was better to leave things as they were. She couldn’t possibly handle all matters at once.

‘I’m sorry, Suho. But please trust me on this. I’ll be back.. soon, I hope,’ with that, she muttered a ‘thanks’ before ending the call. She sighed, and turned around. Luhan was looking intently at her.

‘What?’

‘You’re hopeless, you know that?’ Luhan sighed as he shook his head. She stared off to space, ‘yeah, I am.’

-JONGDAE-

He fell asleep with his head slumped onto the table. Good thing he had managed to sneak in the ring inside the box before he fell asleep or else the ring would’ve rolled across the floor.

For now, it was the only thing that reminded him of Katherine. For now, it was the only connection they had.

He stood up and rubbed his eyes. For a good minute, he stared off to space. His mind was blank – and so were all his senses. How could he possibly move when there was no light to guide him this time? It was still early, and he wondered how the hell would he be able to make it through the day without her?

He exited his room and went down to get himself a glass of water. Suho was sitting on a stool on the kitchen counter, his arm supporting his chin as he was in a deep thought. Jongdae walked up to him and slumped himself on the chair beside Suho’s and sighed heavily. He could feel his eyes water, but he deemed it was best not to break down. He wouldn’t arrive at somewhere if he cried, would he?

‘Jongdae,’ Suho called, ‘have you ever thought that maybe Katherine wouldn’t want to come back?’

What?

Jongdae widened his eyes a bit, clearly displeased with the question his friend just raised.

‘What are you talking about, Suho?’ there was a hint of mockery in his voice, but nonetheless, everything inside him was serious. His face was serious. His mind and heart were serious. Why wouldn’t she want to come back? This place is our home.

‘Nothing, I just,’ Suho sighed as he bowed his head down. Jongdae tilted his head a bit looking so confused.

‘It’s just that I thought that maybe, just maybe, she wouldn’t want to.. come back anymore,’ Suho sounded serious and as much as he didn’t want to be, he knew he had no choice but to make Jongdae realize the possibility that Katherine may not want to come back at all. Although she didn’t make it seem like she wasn’t going to come back, Suho couldn’t settle with that fact alone. If there was something he wanted most at the moment, it was to make Jongdae feel less hurt than he was feeling now.

‘Don’t say things like that, Suho,’ Jongdae tried to laugh off, ‘it’s not funny.’ Suho noticed the slight cracking of Jongdae’s voice and he couldn’t help but feel guilty all of a sudden.

‘I’m sorry, Jongdae,’ Suho shut his mouth up to avoid any more of the useless things that may slip out. Jongdae lightly patted Suho’s back, ‘it’s okay.’ Jongdae stood up, chugged down the remaining water from his glass, and hastily walked away. Suho watched him and couldn’t help but accommodate the frown that was creeping to his lips.

I’m sorry, bro. Suho sighed and stared at the glass on the counter.

-KRIS-

He dialed Jongdae’s number, but to no avail, no one answered. It wasn’t a surprise though, since Jongdae didn’t mind charging his phone or even checking on it since he was busy sulking around all day. Kris had practiced what he would say, but he was disappointed that he couldn’t get the chance to talk to Jongdae.

It was already getting dark, and he deemed it was best to call Jongdae at this time of the day, knowing that Jongdae probably was tired at this period of the day. But he has Katherine. That thought alone was enough to make his blood boil. When he was tired, he didn’t have anybody. He only had headaches and tons of paper works – not to mention a nagging father as well.

It doesn’t even matter if Jongdae’s tired from work. At least he’d have Katherine when he gets home.

Kris held the phone tighter in his grasp, wanting to crush it into pieces. But he figured that he would need his phone, so why the hell would he break it?

No one answered. Kris grew impatient.

That’s when he just decided to send Jongdae a text message.

I’m back, Jongdae. Keep Katherine close. You never know when I’m closer.

-KATHERINE-

She was practically forced to lie down in bed the whole day. Luhan kept on saying that she shouldn’t be too stressed out since it was bad for the baby – or so the internet said.

It was somehow funny to think that she ended up at that situation when all she ever did was to meet up with Jongdae for their third year anniversary.

But things seemed to get a tad bit out of hand and now, she was pregnant. And her life was a mess. And being with Jongdae . Big time. At least she had Luhan now. She couldn’t imagine herself being all alone at that kind of situation. She would probably want to just end everything.

-JONGDAE-

He was praying, God please bring her back.

Would God heed his prayers? It wasn’t like he meant wrong, right?

But he knew what he did was wrong. It was wrong to get her from Kris in the first place. But even so, he didn’t regret anything. It was his own will and feelings acting upon what happened and he didn’t have any intention on bringing back things he couldn’t possibly bring back. After all, there was nothing to regret about. He loved Katherine, and he was more than glad that she loved him back.

If there is one reason in the world for which he hated himself most, it was taking advantage of the chance given to him. He was supposed to make her feel happy and loved – not cheated on.

-KRIS-

He couldn’t wait to see her. No matter what happens, he needed to see her. She was the reason he came to the Philippines anyway. Fact is, she was the sole reason that he did all stupid things in life. He talked back to his father for the first time because of her. He completely ignored his friendship with Jongdae because of her. He was practically going nuts because of her.

If he couldn’t see her, -- if he couldn’t have her, then he wouldn’t let anyone have her as well.

As simple as that.

‘Suho, it’s me,’ he called. And knowing that Suho had been good friends with Jongdae, he knew well enough that he wouldn’t get much from Suho.

He heard a slight gasp on the other end of the line and he mentally scoffed. Oh Suho.

‘Listen, if Jongdae’s there, tell him I have to get something from him. Something that’s already mine in the first place. I’m pretty sure you’re aware of what that is, Suho. Good night then,’ he ended the call and soon after, a smirk played upon his lips.

Was he crazy?

Maybe. Maybe he was. But as usual, the reason behind everything he’s ever done was her. And soon, even though he might go nuts by the time he’s face to face with her, he was going to make sure he’ll make her his.
