Hourglass

Day X Night

[The 78 Cafe Bar, Glasgow, Scotland- NIGHT]

Wearing a manly coat, facial hairs and a thin moustache, Min was slowly sipping her cappucino while watching the couple sitting on a table next to the bar. They looked like a real couple there, talking, laughing, glancing at each other, Min almost believe that Fei and Max were really into each other that night.

“I think Min wants to say hi to you.” Max, in his comfortable winter black jacket that night, sent a quick smile to Min across the tables. The girl fixed her moustache nervously, not wanting to blow her cover as an-awkward-lonely-man-in-a-bar.

The small cafe bar wasn’t too crowded that night. They chose that cafe simply because it was a perfect place to talk things out, and Fei planned on making Max spill everything out that night. With live music in the back, the sound of clinked glasses, her feminine body-fit winter coat and a few strands of hair falling at the side of her face beautifully, Fei was more than confident.

She chuckled, “Hmm, don’t try to change the topic. Let’s get back to the code again, shall we?”

Max smiled, “There’s nothing left to talk about,” he paused, staring at their empty glasses of beer, “unless you want to turn this date into a date. Your call.” he gave her a warm genuine smile.

Fei nodded to his invitation. This could lead her to another series of information, and if she was lucky, she could even peel off the part about the brotherhood.

Their glasses were filled, and a new conversation started. Max looked comfortable, and Fei started a new approach on him. “So, how did you meet Amber for the first time?”

Max didn’t answer right away, as he was staring at his glass of beer, obviously uncomfortable with the topic. Fei could sniff the scent of victory already.

“I.. met her at our kindergarten. She was a tomboy, even back then.” he said, a bitter smile could be seen across his face.

“Oh that’s cute!” Fei squealed, part of her was actually imagining a little version of the tomboy. “Who knew she was going to be this popular now?”

There was this silence afterwards, where they could only hear the female vocalist of the band behind them singing with a tender jazzy voice. Fei tried to read his mind, but the man before her was just there, staring back at her with a poker face.

“Max. You know it’s not just about Amber right?” Fei smiled at him, holding his hand gently, still smoothly playing her role as a lover, “It’s about the Profiler. You know what’s going to happen if- -“

Max clenched his fist around the glass beer, piercing her a look, “Listen,” his calm attitude suddenly disappeared, “..you gotta protect her no matter what. It was all my fault, all my fault that she’s living such a difficult life. Please, you gotta protect her..”

Fei wasn’t expecting such a reaction from him, and it itched her even more. “Of course. It’s what I do, it’s what me and my girls do. But you have to work with us, Max.” she said, trying to sink her words deep into his mind before continuing, “The ‘Hero’, Kim Jaejoong.” she finally mentioned the name. “With just a click on the Profiler, Kim Jaejoong can be located, and it’s our job to never let that happen. You know it too right? Think about it.”

Max looked at her with a painful look, “I can’t. I can’t betray my hyeongs.. I’m sorry I can’t..”

“If you love Amber, then this is the right thing to do. Help us stop this, and maybe Amber can return to her happy-normal-college-life. That’s what you always wanted right?”

He didn’t  reply, his eyes wandered around, avoiding her gaze.

“So this is where you spend your weekend, Max.” a new voice popped between the two of them, and along with the voice Fei felt a cold steel poking her back bone. She quickly glanced at Min, who was dealing with the same situation. Jung Yunho pressed the glock* to her back, and in less than a minute she knew the place had been surrounded by their men.

[*a type of gun]

“Hyeong, please. Stay out of it..” Max said in a low voice, trying not to attract any attention.

“Fei, I know you’re smart enough not to make me pull the trigger right?” Yunho whispered, yanking her off from the seat after putting a roll of money on the bar table.

Fei didn’t reply, as she obediently followed him out of the cafe, wondering if this meeting was a set up from the beginning. She turned to see if Max was saying anything, but he remained silent. At the far table, Min had a man locking her from the back as well, and they both tried to exchange messages, when suddenly Min heard a ringing in her ear. One of the henchmen just crushed Fei’s earplug with his boots. “No talking, girls.” said the henchman behind Min.

“Let’s have fun! Saturday night is lonely to be spent in such a boring place.” Yunho said, as she shoved Fei into the back of his limo. “I know a better place, where we can talk, share, and where I can listen to all of your problems, girls.” he shot a glance to Min as well as they threw her next to Fei and slammed the door before them. Yunho gave a sign to the one driving, and with that, the black limousine drove away from the bar, leaving him, Max, and a couple of henchmen behind.

“So this is what you said your new plan?” Yunho smirked, patting his shoulder proudly before getting into a car stopped in front of him. “Well done.”

Max simply smiled at him, nodding to his statement.

Inside his pocket, his thumb quickly pressed the gps-patch, hoping that the JYP headquarters would respond soon to his S.O.S signal.

“This is G-Dragon speaking. Who wants to play?”

The screens in the control room were covered by his face, and the IT technicians had been driven crazy for the past 15 minutes. Red sirines roamed all over the place, the library, the corridors, the laboratory, all personels were aware of the security breach by the Yellow Dragon.

Key quickly ran to the lift, the first thing crossed his mind was to find Suzy. As soon as he hit the lift button, his face turned white. The lift stopped functioning. He was trapped on that floor. He saw security guards passing by, and a flock of researchers locking their rooms immediately, securing their works, fear was written all over their face.

Back in the control room, Suzy tried to negotiate with GD while Jia helped the technician to block his attack. It was hectic, and all GD did was laugh and laugh, even when he was responding to Suzy’s demand.

“You guys are hilarious seriously! HAHAHAHAHAH!” he laughed, and his laughing face were shown in each and every possible screen available, including their cell phones. They all threw their phones to the floor, quickly unplugged the batteries to stop his annoying laughters.

Suzy wasn’t pleased at all, especially since this was the second time he attacked today, and they need to stop him before any confidential informations were gone. “YAH! What do you want?!” she yelled at him, losing her temper.

The eccentric guy chuckled, ignoring Suzy, “Ah, really? Can’t anyone break my spell? Come on. Even a grandma can solve this.”

Suzy checked if Jia and the technicians were close to stop the attack, but they were still struggling. She thought of another way to get his attention, to soften him down, a kind of deal of something, when suddenly GD said, “Hmm. Boring. Boring boring people.”

With that statement, his face vanished from the screens, and their system slowly returned. The electricity, the security system and everything followed were freed from the ‘spell’.

“How long will it take to restore our network?” Suzy asked to one of the technician.

“30 minutes till an hour.”

“Suzy!”

Hearing her name called, she turned to find Key storming into the room.

“What the hell just happened?? And where’s Amber?! I’ve been looking for her everywhere!” he said, looking somewhat pissed and panic at the same time.

Suzy and Jia exchanged glares, followed by Suzy’s rage as she raced herself out of the room, “It was G-Dragon all along!!”

Jia couldn’t help but smiled at the thought of it, “Amber, you smart kid.” as she made her way out of the room as well, knowing that they have to move fast before Raven got herself into trouble.

***

“That’s it. Off you go. Shoo!”

Though GD couldn’t see her, Amber smiled while pressing the cellphone to her ear, “Thanks man, you’re the best! Should I buy you milk tea sometimes?”

The boy across the line chuckled, “Nah, but some cute Japanese girls might do..”

“Ahahahahah, okay, let’s see if there is one who wants to be with a geek like you.” Amber laughed, while glancing to the information screen where her flight number just popped. “Okay, I gotta go now! Seriously, I can’t thank you enough for what you did. I’ll repay you someday.”

“Try to live long enough to do so! Good luck.”

“Gomawo.. I’ll contact you when I’m arrived!”

Click.

Amber threw the cellphone to a nearby trashbin before quickly heading toward the bridge to her airplane. Her flight to Fukuoka tonight was all credits to GD’s information about Dr.Noh’s whereabouts. For the past few years since the death of her parents, this man had been hiding in Tokyo. But when a rumour about Raven as the key holder of the Profiler spreaded, Dr.Noh silently moved to a more secluded place. Trying to protect what’s left from Prof. Lee Mun Hee, -the profiler 2.1.

She slumped her backpack into the cabin, and took her laptop to her seat. At the moment it was the only thing she was holding on. Her research tool, her right hand, and for the next few hours, or maybe even days or weeks, would be her only access to G-Dragon.

It didn’t take her long when she made the decision of leaving the facility. She knew that Key would be returned home, and the girls, Jia and Suzy, would be searching for her, but she had the information, she had GD who was willing to help, so she put on her jacket, grabbed her laptop and just like that escaped the security system after she and GD did a little trick to their cameras and censors around the gates. Plus, a little performance by GD to buy her some time just now.

The little lights outside the plane window flickered in turn, signaling that the plane was about to take off soon. Her fingers clasped around her laptop, tucking it closer to her, trying to ensure herself that this trip was the right thing to do. She deserved the truth, and this was her problem from the beginning, so either Suzy or JYP shouldn’t keep anything from her.

“Excuse me, sir. Please fasten your seat belt, we’re about to take off.” a stewardress came by her seat row and politely reminded. The passenger next to her was a middle-aged woman, so she was quite positive that the sir the stewardress addressed to was her. Amber chuckled, but she nodded and thanked her anyway before fastening her seat belt.

Returning back to his studio in the club house was not what Key had in mind for the last 24 hours. It was rather embarrasing because the last thing he did was storming out of the house and said goodbye, and now there he was, sitting behind his desk full of sketches and doodles for the upcoming Street Fashion Mob. All the boys had been asleep already, but when he heard a knock in the door, he knew who noticed his presence.

“Did you climb through the window??” Jonghyun whispered as he squeezed himself between the door and the cardbox blocking his way. This studio was surprisingly messy, even for Key, he thought.

“Yeah. They threw me back here. Why are you still up this late?” Key replied, still leaning on the back of his chair.

Jonghyun stood by the desk, “I don’t know. I can’t sleep.” He paused, they paused. Until he continued, “How’s Amber? Why back so soon?”

“How do you know that I met her?”

“Well, you said ‘they’, so I bet that must be Suzy and the super secret agents. Something happened?”

Key let out a heavy sigh. “A lot. Me and Amber were attacked, and then Suzy scooped us to their headquarters, and some crazy hacker guy messed around with the security system, and then she’s gone.”

“What- - it all happened in one night? And Amber’s gone? What do you mean? Is she okay?”

“I don’t know. She escaped the facility. Not even telling me anything before. I hate her.”

Jonghyun noticed the stiff tone of his voice. He took a seat on a stool behind him, “Key, what’s going on?”

Key spinned on his chair to turn to him, “Aish, didn’t I just tell you what happened?”

“No. What’s going on with you?” Jonghyun threw him a look. “You seemed to be troubled, ever since Amber met those.. people. We’re all worried and the girls couldn’t stop asking us about Amber. But you went further, Key. Don’t you realize?”

“Well? She’s my best friend. I’ve known her since junior high. I’ve known her longer than you guys.” He sounded possesive.

Jonghyun laughed, “Yah, seriously. We met her in junior high too, only 2 months apart from you. That makes no difference.”

“So? Is it wrong to at least try? Are you telling me to back off as well? Because I can’t do anything to change anything? Is that it? And let her being attacked by some random dangerous men every single day?” Key said, not sitting on his chair anymore.

Jonghyun was a bit surprised. He pushed Key back to his seat, calming him down. “Listen, we care about Amber as much as you do- -“

“No. You’re not!”

Once again Jonghyun was surprised by his reaction. A little smile was hanging at the corner of his lips, “Then tell me, why is that? Why do you have to care for her more?”

Key wanted to reply, but nothing came out of his lips. He was just standing there, with his jaw opened, watching as Jonghyun smirking in front of him.

“You know what? Trust those agents. Let them take care of Amber. She’s a tough girl, she will survive, okay?” Jonghyun patted his shoulder as he got up from the stool. “Cool yourself, resume your classes, your fashion show,” he shoved him the sketches. “We’re worried about you as well. The thing that happened with Nic.. uh, yeah you know what I mean- must’ve shocked you, and we don’t want anything bad happen if you keep messing around with those agents and their dangerous life.”

Jonghyun gave him a smile before going out of the room, “Take a break, have some rest. I’m off to bed.”

Key blinked when the door closed before him, throwing himself back to his chair, spinning. Something bugged him. He thought he would be devastated when Jonghyun mentioned Nicole, but nothing happened. He was still upset, yes, but the thought of letting Nicole go was a little easier to take somehow. Honestly, he was more concern on Amber’s whereabout. Jia and Suzy were tracking her down, and he had decided to wait, since he couldn’t contact them.

For now, hopefully.

[Somewhere in Scotland, -DAWN]

“It’s a simple question. Where is Amber Liu?”

Fei could still hear the question clearly, though Yunho’s face started to blur before her eyes. A cut across her temple earlier was still bleeding and throbbing. She spit her hair out of , trying to keep herself as comfortable as she could though her hand was tied around the pilar pressing cold against her back.

Yunho sighed, his hand rose up to the air, signaling his men to do their job. Two of them approached Fei with a bat in their hands, each of them swung their bats in turn straight to her abdomen. Seeing her coughing up more blood, Yunho stopped his men. “It would be a pity if I was forced to kill a beautiful woman like you. Alright? So just tell me, tell me where Amber Liu is.”

Fei lifted her chin up so she could get a better look at his face, “Tell me.. after Kim Jaejoong comes back, what’s going.. to happen..?” she managed to say more words, despite the pain resonating from her torso. She was exhausted, and it’s been five hours since they’d been interogating her. Min was separated from her and was put in a different room. Guards were all over the place, the door, and even one behind her if she was trying to escape. She had been trying to draw an escape plan, but all exits were blocked.

“That’s a secret. All you have to do is answer. Again, Where-Is-Amber-Liu?”

Fei chuckled bitterly, “Well.. then that’s a secret too.”

Yunho gritted his teeth in madness, “You won’t last long, honey.” followed by his hand signal and soon, the same two men with their bats lunged their attacks on her torso. She moaned in pain, gasping for air when blood started dripping from again. Before she knew it, she dropped to the ground, her wrists were scratching against the pole as her body slid down.

The door was slammed open and Fei wished she could scream in joy when she saw Min barging in with her handguns. The henchmen was quickly attracted to her and swung their blades and bats in harmony, but those bullets were faster and one by one they dropped to the ground. Behind Min was Max, guarding her back with a browning (a semi-automatic handgun) in hand.

“Eonni!” Min screamed when she saw Fei sat lifelessly on the ground. She charged in and fearlessly aimed her gun to Yunho. One of the guards immediately pulled him away in a protective manner, while shooting his firearm toward the girl. She ducked and rolled to the side, without stopping her shots for Yunho. One of her bullets finally managed to hit his shoulder, but by the time it hit, a flock of guards came and covered for him, so Min hinted Max to grab Fei quickly before the zombies started to attack them.

“Hey, stay awake okay? We’re getting you out of here.” he said while untying her wrists. He winced when she saw her face caked with blood, and part of him was feeling guilty. The confident and attractive agent he saw a few hours ago, now looked powerless and he didn’t like seeing her like this. Sensing that she was keeping a distance from him, Max forcefully scooped her up bridal-style. “We’re at the same side. I’ll explain later.”

Fei didn’t know why she felt uncomfortable being so close to him when usually she was the one who flirted and lured guys to get informations. But the pain on her insides was overwhelming, so she just nodded and rested her head on his chest.

Putting Fei’s safety on priority, Min pushed both of them out of the room while she tried to keep them away from Yunho’s henchmen. She closed the door in a hurry, before catching up with Max through the corridors. It was an underground hideout, but unfortunately not the brotherhood’s main headquarter.

They arrived on the roof where a helicopter was waiting for them. The med team stretched out a bed and carefully Max laid Fei there, letting the doctor and his medical team brought her into the chopper. Max wanted to apologize to her, but she seemed to be unconcious. The doctor nodded at him, “Thanks for your cooperation, Changmin-ssi.”

The guy didn’t even say a word, as his eyes kept following the sleeping face of Fei. He turned to find Min when one of the staff called them to enter the chopper as well. But she was no where to be found.

“Yah pali! If she’s dead before we get to the hospital, I’ll kill you for sure!”

Max turned to find Min sitting next to the pilot in the cockpit and smiled in relief, “She won’t die.” he said as he climbed into the helicopter, and sat across Fei’s bed.

“How long do you think until Yunho finds out about it?” asked Min, her voice were competing with the roar of the blades spinning above them.

Max shook his head, “In less than an hour, his men would start a search party for her throughout Tokyo..”
