Chapter 5

My Private Tutor

Cheater, Cheater?

I was standing in front of Sheng Yi in the library. He had totally changed his appearance since I had seen him last time, but on the other hand, I didn’t look like myself at all either. He was smiling, with a set of completely perfect, white teeth at me. I smiled back. He hugged me.
“Woow…” we said at the same time… But then Aaron’s face crossed my mind. Though he and Sheng Yi had some features in common, Aaron was much more handsome.
“Yi, long time no see… How’s life going?” I asked, and smiled in a free way. Seeing his face actually reminded me of something. It reminded me of who I was.
“Wu Ying Jie?” I heard someone say behind me. I turned around, and saw Show with a random, pretty girl. I flashed my perfect teeth.
“Heey Show… This is Wang Zi, my old classmate” I said. I lifted my eyebrows a few times, while saying classmate, to make him think it was more that that. Show smiled in an I-get-it way.
“Okay, pleased to meet you…” he said and nodded. “This is Jolin, my current girlfriend” he said. I smiled in the same way as he had just smiled.
“How long have you guys been dating?” I asked the girl.
“Three years…” she answered and smiled in an arrogant way.
“Three years? Then… Oh, you’re the girl Show was talking about! The one who was something special?” I asked. Show hadn’t talked about any girl, but if he started to like me, my chances of becoming popular were even better.
“Yeah, exactly!” – Show looked at Sheng Yi – “hey, Wang Zi, don’t you want to eat lunch with me, Ying Jie, Hebe, Selina and the guys?” Show asked. I smiled, and touched Sheng Yi’s arm. He started shaking, while smiling in a silly way. I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Of course I want to…” Sheng Yi said, still smiling in a silly way.
“I mean, Wu Ying Jie’s boyfriend should eat with us… Hebe especially picked out Ying Jie to be a part of her clique” Show said, and winked. I smiled.

Already the next day, rumors were starting. I was at that time officially dating Wang Zi, as everyone called him. The good thing about it was that he knew me pretty well, and we could go out, so it looked like dates, when it was actually not.
The girls had also decided to give my school uniform a makeover. They had made the skirt shorter, made me wear pink tights, and made me wear a wide, elastic belt (also pink) a bit over my waist. My problem was that I had class with Aaron that day, and as I hated math, I really had to get myself together.
“So you divide with one hundred, and multiplies with the percent?” I asked. Aaron nodded, and smiled. He should smile more often… He looked cute while smiling.
“So… Then I guess that you can find out what forty-five percent of one hundred and twenty is?” he asked. I started writing in my notebook. It was already full with hearts, as I had been drawing while Aaron was speaking. After calculating (without a calculator!) I had the results.
“It’s fifty-four” I said, and looked at my paper. Aaron nodded.
“Correct.” He said, and then looked at the notes he had prepared.
“What about sixty percent out of five-hundred-and-sixteen?” he asked, while smirking. I was baffled.
“It isn’t that hard. First you divide five-hundred-and-sixteen with one hundred. You just put in a comma before the last two digits, and there you go. Five point one six. And then you multiply it with sixty, which gives you Three-hundred and nine, point six” Aaron smiled. I didn’t know what to do… How could someone on earth just do that in his head?
“Oh, I understand it know…” I lied.
“That’s good, because you now have time to make the eight pages of pieces to give you” he said, back to his usual arrogant attitude.
“Eight pages?! I also have an English essay, a project in social science, and a biology report! Okay… I’m paying a poor kid to do the project and report, but still…” I was baffled. Eight pages?!

At the lunch table Wang Zi was of course placed next to me. Hebe already seemed to like him as a part of our clique. Mostly because she was afraid that I would steal her Aaron.
“How do you think I would look as a blonde?” Selina suddenly asked. Both Hebe and Ella looked at me, like they wanted me to answer.
“Honey, your hair is so perfect, why risk ruining it?” I asked. Selina nodded.
“Then I’ll just get bangs instead… I know that looks nice on me” Selina said and smiled. Hebe, Ella and I nodded at the exact same time. Then Hebe looked at Wang Zi.
“So, Wang Zi, I guess that Ying Jie invented that nickname for you, right?” she asked. I started talking before Wang Zi got to.
“Yes, in fact I did… You know, he has always been my little, personal prince… isn’t that right, honey?” I asked, and looked at him. He nodded.
“You guys are such a cute couple! Wang Zi, how was our Ying Jie in the past?” Selina asked. Though she tried to sound curious, her voice had an evil undertone.
“Well… Cute, nice and pretty. If I’m her prince, then she’s my princess.” He said. His voice sounded very sincere, like he actually meant it. I couldn’t help but smile, though I didn’t like him. Maybe it was more like the look on Aaron’s face, which I though looked jalous I reacted on.
“Aw, that’s so sweet… Aaron never gives me that kind of compliments” Hebe said, and looked at Aaron in an anticipating way.
“Honey, that’s not true… You know how beautiful I think you are.” Aaron said, and smirked. For some reason, it felt like a hundred knifes went through my heart in that moment.
“Gui Gui, shouldn’t we go out later?” Wang Zi asked me. I looked at him with a big fake smile on my face.
“Sheng Yi, of course…”
“She can’t.” Aaron cut me off. Of course everyone at the table was staring at him.
“Why can’t I? And why is that any of your business?” I asked him, with a fake pissed off look on my face. I saw Wang Zi smirk.
“Of course it is… I’m your tutor, and I gave you eight pages of math homework” Aaron pointed out. I got an idea, and looked at Wang Zi.
“Then, do you wanna help me with that, honey? You know how bad I am at math…” I said, just to see Aaron’s expression.
“Of course… You’ve been bad at math ever since middle school… Remember when I had to make your assignment so you didn’t miss practice?” he asked, and laughed.
“Practice? What were you playing?” Ella asked me.
“Oh… Well, you must not laugh, but I was getting piano lessons…” I said. It was only half a lie; I did get piano lessons back then, but when Wang Zi had to help me out it was about basketball.
“No way, you play piano?!” Ella asked, and looked all excited. But of course Aaron had to laugh.
“She’s actually a pretty good piano player…” Wang Zi pointed out. I laughed in a shy way, though I wasn’t shy at all. Show suddenly looked at me in a serious way.
“I’m going to confess to a girl tomorrow with a song, and my piano skills are pretty rusty… Could you please play the piano for me?” he asked. I smiled.
“Of course I can.” I answered.

I was sitting in the schools instrument room, and was practicing the notes that Show had given me. I couldn’t help but laugh at the lyrics; they were so innocent. Love wasn’t like that. It wasn’t that simple. Someone walked in, but I ignored them.
“Wu Ying Jie, you are aware that your little prince is flirting around with freshmen, right?” I heard Aaron’s voice say. I turned around.
“Why would I believe you?” I asked him.
“I never asked you to; I just wanted to let you know… But maybe you don’t care about him.” Aaron said, and smirked.
“Of course I care about him; he’s my boyfriend.” I lied.
“Then I bet that you’ll call him, without an answer, when I tell you that he went out with a girl named Joanne.” Aaron said, and looked at me in a challenging way. I returned the look, and called up Wang Zi.
“Hello?” he asked. He sounded like he tried to catch his breath.
“Hi honey, what are you doing?” I asked him.
“I just returned to my room.” He answered me.
“I miss you. Do you miss me?” I pushed it on purpose. I wanted him to either call me honey, or say he loved me or… Just something. Just because I didn’t like him, it didn’t mean that he could just cheat on me. That wasn’t a part of the routine.
“Yes.” He answered shortly. I rolled my eyes.
“Sweetheart, are you alone?” I asked in a fake cute voice.
“Of course…” he answered.
“If you’re alone, can the girls and I come up then?” I asked. If we could, he was alone.
“Not right now… I still have plans for today” he said.
“Wang Zi, who are talking to?” I heard a girl say in a very annoyingly-cute voice. That was all the evidence I needed.
“Honey, who was that?” I asked.
“Just someone.” He answered. I didn’t know whether it was to me, or to her.
“Oh, well that someone seems very interested in you, and if you don’t explain yourself within two minutes, I don’t know whether or not I’ll keep on being your princess.” I said. I didn’t know why, but the tears that started to take place in my eyes weren’t fake. Though I didn’t love Wang Zi, I still cared about whether or not he stayed true; we had known each other for so many years.
“Would you please stop assuming things?!” he asked.
“Well, if you want me to stop assuming things, then just tell me that you love me, or say the same thing that you said and the lunch table today…” I said. I hated the feeling of warm, wet tears running down my cheeks. I hated showing weakness.
“Of course I meant what I said, but right now is pretty inappropriate…” he said.
“Say it, or I’ll hang up.” I threatened.
“Listen, now’s not…”
“Bye.” I said, and pushed the red bottom. I then looked at Aaron.
“Would you please accompany to Wang Zi’s room?” I asked him. He nodded.

When we arrived to Wang Zi’s room, I decided to hide, and let Aaron knocked. Of course I eavesdropped when Wang Zi opened.
“Hey, Aaron dude…” Wang Zi greeted. I could see Aaron’s smirk from where I was hiding.
“Hello, Sheng Yi. I thought you were with Hebe’s friend Gui Gui, what happened to her?” he asked. I could see that he was looking at something – or someone.
“She’s probably doing homework or something…” Wang Zi said. Judging from the look of Aaron’s face, it there was obviously a someone.
“I never thought that I would befriend one more person with that bad a moral towards girls… And yet I don’t know if yours is worse, ‘cause Jolin cheats on Show all the time herself” I heard Aaron say in a very cold voice. “Pardon my choice of words. I didn’t mean to say ‘befriend’, ‘cause after cheating on Wu Ying Jie, we probably won’t meet again.”
“What do you mean by that?” Wang Zi asked in a confused way.
“I guess you don’t know Ying Jie as well as you’re saying? Last time a guy cheated on her he ended up being completely ditched by her everyone, even though he was the most wanted guy in the whole school. The girl was sent to an all girls’ school in Japan” Aaron said and smiled. I wondered how he knew it, but at that time I didn’t care.
“Alien Huang…” Wang Zi said, but then he noticed that Aaron had already walked away – towards me.
