Accepting the path ahead

Should we act like nothing's wrong?

Soo Yun let out a sighed after exiting the meeting room; one word was still lingering in her head: probation.  Her professor just had a meeting with her telling her that her boss at the hospital had made a complaint against her, saying they weren’t pleased with her work and that her sick leaves had made her be behind her other classmates in her internship, so they where only giving her this week to change her attitude or they will asked her to leave.

She run to the closest bathroom and lock herself in one of the stalls.

What the hell, just because the patients are taking my advice better and like me better, that is making my life a living hell, bullying me and looking down on me and now I’m the one on probation? You have got to be kidding me, but there is no way they can kick me out, is her word against mine and everyone knows I have being doing my job perfectly” she said to herself and walk out of the stall, washed her face and carry on with her  day.

Despite her small pep talk, deep down Soo Yun knew she had everything to lose, after all, her boss was a close friend with her professor and her professor had always look down on Soo Yun for having such a fragile health condition. The fact that she had being hospitalized for 4 days at the middle of her internship because of her kidneys, hadn’t help out her situation.

She decided to just focus on her work and let things go, but she was scare to death. Each new day, she felt on the verge of having a nervous breakdown, the pressure her boss was placing on her was too much, to the point she began to wonder if some of her personal information, the one about her depression,  had leaked into the hospital and they were trying to get rid of her.

She knew very well that in society’s eyes, having a mental sickness was frown upon, even between health professionals.

But she didn’t had to wait too long to know the truth, on Friday she got a call, telling her she had being called down to a meeting on Monday at the university, to revise her case and her continuity on her internship. In that moment, she knew… they knew everything.

Soo Yun finished up her day and said goodbye to her patients, deep down she knew she wasn’t going to see them anymore. She began her trip back home, but could feel the sting on her eyes, the countless tears that were fighting to get out “wait, Soo Yun, you are almost home, just a little longer” she kept repeating in her head.

She got off the bus and began walking aimlessly, trying to reach the next bus stop, but rain began pouring down, forcing her to step into the subway. It will take her longer to reach her place, but at least she will be under cover.

Soo Yun made her way into the wagon, that thankfully was almost empty and took a seat on the farthest part of it, not paying attention to her surroundings.  She knew she couldn’t keep it down longer and let a small tear fall down, she quickly tried to wipe it away, but soon another and another one followed.

She looked down and let them fall down, the pain in her chest was too big and she was too scared of what could mean to her if they kick her out. Another year lost since she will have to retake the whole thing all together and another disappointment at her father’s eyes.

After a while, she saw that someone had being seating in front of her almost all the ride on the subway and she felt embarrassed that a total stranger had seeing her so vulnerable. Thankfully the voiceover announced her stop had come and she got up, but as soon as she did, she saw the person seating in front of her, Choi Seung Hyun.

He had notice her when she sat down in front of him, but he didn’t know what to say to her, deep down he was still trying to process their last conversation, but he knew he had to say something, but before he could say anything, he saw her crying.

Seung Hyun had never being good with his own feelings, let alone anyone else; but when he saw Soo Yun crying it made his heart ached. He knew her too well, she hated being exposed in public, she had never let anyone see her cry that he knew off, but there she was in the subway of all places, crying her eyes out.

“What happen? Why is she like this? What should I do?” he began wondering in his mind, deep down he knew he had to do something, but he stopped… he didn’t knew what to say.

When he finally took courage, she got up and realized he was right in front of her, and then he knew he had taken too long. He saw her eyes looking straight to his and saw something he had never seeing in hers, from a surprise first glanced; they quickly changed into pain and disappointment.

Soo Yun got off as quickly as she could from the train and ran to the exit. The rain was still pouring down but she no longer care about getting wet, she needed to get as far away from that place as she could.

“He saw me, he saw me crying and he didn’t do anything. He saw me break down and didn’t even care… this is truly the end…”

She kept on running until she reached her place and quickly locked herself on the bathroom, jumping into the shower and letting her heart cry out her frustrations regarding the hospital and Choi Seung Hyun.

Monday arrived way too quickly and Soo Yun could feel her heart racing, she was about to faint over fear of what may happen to her in the next 2 hours. After that meeting her faith was going to be decided and she was going to have to accept it whether she like it or not.

She didn’t even bother to do her makeup, despite the mess she was looking right now, deep bags hang under her eyes and dark circles finished up the picture, but she no longer cared and she decided to just make her way to the bus stop.

Soon Soo Yun heard a beep from a car stopping in front of her, she looked up and realize it was Young Bae.

“Hey baby girl! Where are you going?” he said to her, alarmed by the way she looked but tried his best to conceal the concern.

“Bae hi, I’m actually on my way to university” she said almost in a whisper.

“Jongmal, I had to go that way today too, common kaja” he said sensing that something was completely off with her. He did have his suspicions over the weekend since she hadn’t replied to his texts but as soon as he saw her, he knew something big was happening.

Soo Yun got in the car and simply stared out the window, while Young Bae drove, after a few minutes he finally spoke up.

“Nam Soo Yun, come on, out with it. What is going on?”

Soo Yun took a deep breath and began to tell him everything that had happen to her with her boss at work and about her unexpected unpleasant encounter with Seung Hyun on the subway.

Bae had to took a deep breath and he gripped strongly to the steering wheel, one of the things he hated the most was seeing his baby girl down and he fell like killing his hyung, they had met on Friday night and he didn’t even mention the fact he saw Soo Yun on the subway.

Soo Yun finished up her talk at the moment Young Bae parked his car. He got off and went to open up her door and engulf her in a hug.

She began to cry in his shoulder, she felt torn to pieces and without none else to lean on. He let her cry until he felt her calm down a little bit.

“Gomawo, I really needed to talk to someone” she said pulling away from his arms and drying her tears.

“Baboya, you should have called me the minute all of this happened. Common, I don’t want you to be late for your meeting” he said grabbing her hand.

“Don’t worry, I can go by myself” Soo Yun said to him, trying to push him away.

“Nam Soo Yun, I am not letting you go alone” he said while passing his arm around her shoulders and made her walk.

“Jongmal gwenchana, you have work and I can go by myself, I promise to text you as soon as the meeting is done”

“No, I am going with you and that’s final, I am not letting you alone, you are not alone, you have me, arasso? Remember what I promise you a long time ago, even if everyone leaves you, I will remain by your side” he said looking into her eyes and giving her one final hug.

She couldn’t resist to anything anymore and just let herself being dragged by him to accompany her.

Young Bae give her one final hug and a kiss on her forehead before she got inside the meeting room and whisper something in her ear “remember, no matter what happens, I am here with you and I am not going anywhere”.

Soo Yun nodded and made her way inside, but then she realize that not only her professor was there, her hospital boss was also inside together with her major’s dean.

They began talking and talking, not even letting Soo Yun defended herself and then her boss said it:

“I am sorry to say this, but at the hospital my colleagues and I feel like we can’t trust Nam Soo Yun-sshi with patients, she is too unstable and her sickness leaves are making her fall behind her other classmates and we can’t let that happen, we simply need to be fair with everyone”

Soo Yun tried to intervene, but her professor wouldn’t let her utter a word, replying that she was worried for Soo Yun and her stability and they had done everything in her power to help her, but she simply wasn’t listening to their advice.

Soo Yun felt her blood boiled, she could tolerate almost anything in this world, except being called a liar. She hated lies with all her heart, because almost everyone that had meant something for her and that had ended up betraying her had lied straight to her face.

She pleaded for them to let her stay, she was just 6 weeks away from ending her internship, but they just wouldn’t listen and notify her that until she was more healthy, she was being asked to leave and that she could retake her whole internship in a different hospital the upcoming year.

After that was said, Soo Yun stopped paying attention but she could have sworn she saw her now ex boss smirking at the sight of her being defeated. Yun looked down; afraid she might begin cursing her out with all her heart and made matters worse.

When the meeting was about to come to an end, her ex boss looked up to her and said “Soo Yun-sshi, I know you are amazing academically speaking, I truly hope you get better” and she smirked to her, like telling her she had won after all.

As soon as the meeting came to an end, Soo Yun got up from her seat and got out, the second she opened up the door, she saw Young Bae getting up and walking to her, but all she could do was walked quickly to him and surrounded him with her arms.

“Get me out of here, please get me out of here” was all that she could said to him.

Young Bae knew right there, what had happened, he grabbed her strongly in his arms, while giving a glare to the people that were coming out from the meeting room who were honestly surprised that someone was waiting for her.

Young Bae had to almost carry her out all the way to his car, she was silently sobbing and he could feel she was about to break down.

He began driving and instead of taking her to her place, he drove straight to his apartment, letting her cry out in silence in the passenger’s seat.

“Bae, wae? You need to go to work” she said almost without any force in her voice, after seeing him parking his car in his building.

“Shush, today you are with me, I already asked for a sick day, one of the perks of being so efficient” he said getting off the car and practically picking her up in his arms again, afraid of what she might do to herself if she was left alone in this state of mind. He cared about her too much and seeing her this broken, only made his own heart shred to pieces.

He punched his code and let her in, making his way into his bedroom, carefully helping her lay down on his bed and began to her back as she broke down in more sobs. She cry herself to sleep, so Bae decided to step out to give her some privacy.

Bae sat down on the couch, clenching his fists, he hated he couldn’t do anything to help her out this time; he knew how much this meant for her, how much she had struggled to be able to study, all she had to endure, how many times in the last months she had literally getting out of the ER after getting an IV and two hours later be ready to be doing rounds. She had stuck up all the verbal abuse she had received from her former boss, telling herself that she was about to finish, for them to take away all of her hard work in one single meeting.

The afternoon arrived and Soo Yun opened up her eyes and that’s when it hit her that she was at Bae’s place. She walked out of the room and found him taking something out of the microwave oven.

“You are up just in time, I made you my famous brownies” he said smiling to her.

“You mean your famous made from mix brownies?” she said pouting at him.

“You still love to shove them down, common I even got you some coke light, my addicted friend” he said ruffling with your hair “and is that a pout? Aigoo uri baby girl is truly living up to her nickname today”

“Well, you know beside my parents, you are the only one that I allow to see me like this, besides you love to spoil me rotten” she said and a small smile formed in her lips.

“Common, is being long overdue since we saw a movie” he said dragging her to the couch and placing the brownies on the coffee table.

He grabbed the remote and hit played and soon Catching Fire was playing on the tv. He grabbed a brownie and shove it on Soo Yun’s mouth who didn’t even flinched, after all, this wasn’t the first time he had feed her, their dynamics were so complex this days that they weren’t comfortable if they were apart for too long.

Young Bae has always being afraid that Soo Yun might relapse and he knew that the upcoming days where going to send her down a spiral of depression, but he was going to do anything in his power to help her out of it.

Soo Yun snuggled into Bae’s arms and finally spoke up.

“Thanks, for everything, I mean it” she said while another tear roll down her face.

“Don’t mention it, you know that I will do anything for you baby girl” he said while placing his head over hers.

“Really Bae, I can’t understand why you have being always so nice to me, I am a mess, a mental patient that have spend almost half of the time since we met pinning over a guy that didn’t deserve me and the other half struggling to remain sane. Why haven’t you fled like everyone else has?” she said while another tear roll down her cheek.

Bae looked at her and realize something he had kept on ignoring for a long while now, but he said to himself this was neither the time nor the place, he simply planted a soft kiss on her forehead and reply:

“Because you are my mess, when I promise you that I was going to be there for you I meant it, you are my best friend and I don’t care if the whole world hates you, I will never leave your side” he said hugging her.

Yun was exhausted, both mentally and physically, but that pair of strong arms around her where the best place she could ever wish to be in right now.
