Trek 101: Machu Picchu
Travel loveHere's the second part of the trip in Peru.
Our flight to Cuzco was smooth. Our guide met us at the airport and then brought us for breakfast at Cicciolina bakery. Man! The aroma of freshly baked bread was amazing. Jong Hyun ordered himself his favorite grapefruit juice. I tried their hot chocolate. It was heaven. It's not your ordinary hot chocolate filled with lots of sugars. It was a brew of dark, and intense chocolate with lots of fruit overtones. Its mahogany flavor was intensified by a cinnamon stick steeped in the chocolate for stirring it.
Jong Hyun tried the local sausages, scrambled with eggs and roasted peppers and mushrooms over a toasted half peasant bread. While I ordered poached eggs on top of fresh asparagus and fried tomatoes over a pancake. The first bite we all inadvertently moaned. The flavors were well combined, beautifully presented, and intense. Jong Hyun was satisfied with his food. He even offered me to try his and I did few bites. I let him try the poach egg and the asparagus.
Cicciolina Bakery is a must try while in Cusco.
After breakfast we went straight to the train station. I wanted to take the Inca trail but time is not enough so we opted for train. It was a more than 3 hours ride to Aguas Calientes. It was an entertaining. The scenery were awesome. It was right along the Urubamba River with canyon walls on either side.
We explored Aguas Calientes. Eat local foods. Drink local wines. We retired early as we have to rise up early for the real trip.
Be that as it may, expect your first glimpse of the Machu Picchu ruins to be awesome and then some. Highlights of the ruins include The Sun Gate, The Temple of the Condor, the Plaza Principal or Main Square, and The Temple of the Three Windows.
Part of the big deal surrounding Machu Picchu is how it was built. The Incas mastered the technique of polishing large stones until they perfectly fit next to one another. No mortar was used to keep the stones together, yet they fit so snuggly that not a sheet of paper can slide between them. That is a mystery I wanted to find out.
My heart on history overpowered my scintific heart.Standing and basking at the majestic thing eyes could have ever seen, I felt lost. Awesome is a much over-used word, the bane of English teachers worldwide. Seeing the sun rise over Machu Picchu promises to stand out as one of the most spiritual moments of your life.
I felt like tearing up just by the sight. I didn't realized I gripped on Jong Hyun's arm tightly.
"You okay?"
"Oh... yeah," my voice croaked.
"Are you sure? You sounds sick." his hand landed on my fore head.
"Are you feeling sick?" our guide was worried.
"No.. No.. I'm fine. I just uh... became emotional." I assured him.
"Wanna take a break." he suggested and motioned us on a clearer area.
"Ya... are you sure you're okay? I know the altitude is a bit different. I thought I'm getting sick earlier." Jong Hyun admitted.
I turned to him. "Are you okay?" It's my turn to get worried. I dragged him here. I'm responsible.
"I am now. You?"
I nodded. "Let's go." I got up and saw our guide's worried face. . "I'm fine. Don't worry "
The walk around the ruin was tiring but I can't feel it. I was so excited and blown away with the scenic view. The stones walls. Our guide was explaining to us about the history as we ascend Huayna Picchu. It's a summit gives trekkers a bird's-eye view of Machu Picchu. I can't help myself but cried when we reached the summit. The view was spectacular. Jong Hyun and our guide pretended to ignore m
