The other woman
Seeking for CertaintyMyungsoo was sitting beside Soojung in a rounded table with both of their parents. It seemed like the families were planning to have lunch together in a five star restaurant. Unfortunately, it was the same restaurant where Suzy and Sehun were supposed to meet Fei.
“Isn’t that Myungsoo-ssi over there? Why is he with a girl?”
Suzy didn’t answer Sehun. Instead, she tried to analyze the situation. She could’ve called Fei again and agree with her to transfer to another restaurant. She could’ve stepped out right at that moment; she could’ve chose to walk away and just explain things to Sehun when they’re already far enough but Suzy was already tired of running away. She knew that at one point in time she had to face these kinds of situations. It just turned out that it was now.
She looked around and realized that they had to pass by Myungsoo’s in order to get to the table Fei had reserved. She hoped that they could go unnoticed because if they succeeded to do so, then all would be well.
“Do me a favor,” Suzy said sternly. “Shut up until we get to our table.”
Sehun saw the girl glare but she still refused to meet his eyes. He didn’t even have the time to ask because Suzy had already started walking. He bit back a sigh as he followed and walked behind her. However, his eyes never left the people on the table, especially Myungsoo and when the latter finally realized their presence, he was petrified. Sehun noticed how Myungsoo stiffen upon seeing Suzy and him.
She was about to sigh in relief as she passed by the table until she heard someone call her name.
“Bae Suzy? Is that you?”
She fought the urge to roll her eyes as she turned and forced a smile while Sehun stood beside her.
“Omo. It really is Bae Suzy,” one of the elder women stood up and hugged her. She was confused but out of respect, she gave the hug back. However, when the woman noticed how puzzled Suzy looked, she let out a soft chuckle. “I don’t think you remember me anymore. I’m Jung Nam Joo. I was the one who bought your photo book years ago.”
At the sudden memory, Suzy made a smile that was bittersweet. Slowly she nodded as she answered, “Yes. I remember.”
Nam Joo smiled at her husband and the other four people as she presented Suzy, saying, “This girl took marvelous photos. It was a pleasure adding her work into my collection.”
The photo book was made as an entry for Suzy to enroll in a Photography Class. However, in senior high she had to sell her camera to pay for her and her siblings’ school fees. By that time, she knew that her family’s economic condition couldn’t make her take the path she wanted. As she sold the book, she also decided to let go of her dream.
She snapped out of her trance and introduced the male that stood beside her, “This is Oh Sehun. A co-worker.”
“This is my husband, Woo Sung and my daughter, Soojung,” Nam Joo took the turn to introduce the people she was with. “And this is her husband, Kim Myungsoo and his parents, Kim Min Jong and Kim Hye Soo.”
Suzy took note of how Soojung tried hard not to meet gazes with hers. Myungsoo’s mother and father flashed forced smiles but Suzy knew that by the way they gripped their glasses tight, her presence made them tense. However, she regretted looking at Myungsoo, because by the way he stared at her, she knew that he was suppressing all his emotions.
“Nice to meet you, Suzy-ssi,” Hye Soo extended her hand.
There was a pang in Suzy’s chest in that simple action of Myungsoo’s mother. She was hinting that she never knew Suzy at all. Jung Nam Joo remembered her with just one meeting, but here are Myungsoo’s parents, pretending that it was their first. Suzy felt her stomach crawling towards - the act made her sick.
“Omma, you’ve already met her,” Myungsoo said, trying to act calm as possible. He managed to fake a smile as he added, “We used to be in the same school.”
Hye Soo withdrew her hand which received nothing from Suzy but a cold stare. She flashed a smirk and her stare at the girl was unwavering as she replied, “Really? I’m sorry. I tend to forget people who are unremarkable or those who are of mere importance.”
Suzy felt her blood boil by hearing those words. Hye Soo was humiliating her in front of everyone, including Nam Joo who admired her so much. Suzy’s anger was getting higher and higher to her head, begging to explode. However, she knew that if she’ll show how affected she was, she would be the one in the losing end.
“Omma,” Myungsoo said sternly, slightly glaring at his own mother. He then looked at Suzy with pleading eyes as he whispered, “I’m sorry, Su.”
But then, to his surprise, Suzy took Hye Soo’s hand, shaking it as she replied, “It’s a pleasure to meet you too, Mrs. Kim. Don’t worry…”
She flashed her own smirk at the woman before adding, “…I’ll work hard so that the name Bae Suzy would always ring a bell.”
The two were having a staring contest before Nam Joo broke it, saying, “So you and Myungsoo are old friends? That’s interesting. Would you and your friend here, Sehun, like to accompany us to our lunch then? I would like to know more about you my dear Suzy, and of course, your works.”
Kim Min Jong awkwardly coughed as he asked, “But isn’t this supposed to be a family lunch?”
Suzy bit back a scoff. Even Myungsoo’s father wanted to get rid of her so much. She knew that one of the possible reasons was because Myungsoo’s parents were afraid that a conversation would shed some light to her real relationship with Myungsoo, which they also believe only remains in the past. Even before she could be shamed further, she linked her arm with Sehun. The latter looked at her worriedly because even though she kept a strong façade outside, he could still feel her shaking.
“I’m sorry Mrs. Jung,” Suzy smiled apologetically. “I’m afraid the two of us already have an appointment.”
“Really? I’m sorry for holding you back,” Nam Joo replied sincerely. “But it was nice seeing you again. I hope to see you again next time.”
She smiled again before both of them politely bowed at everyone. She tried so hard to hold back the glare she wanted to give but as soon as she turned around to head to Fei, her face had turned sour. She had practically dragged Sehun and her fast movements only stopped when they have arrived in front of Fei. The woman has her hair tied at the back and was wearing a short white dress but her elegance was outshone by the worry written all over face.
Suzy hugged her unni tight, desperately seeking warmth to boost her energy up. Fei gladly gave back the hug as she whispered to her ears, “I’m sorry that we had to meet this way.”
“It was not your fault,” Suzy replied before breaking the hug. She then turned to Sehun as she introduced, “This is Wang Fei
