Planned cracks
Seeking for CertaintyMyungsoo watched as Suzy remained quiet but he saw how thousands of emotions was registering in her eyes in a split second—disbelief, anger, anxiety, devastation. Thousands of questions were running in her mind, but there was one that she needed to be answered first. Her lips quivered as she opened and her voice broke as she asked,
“A-And y-you’re the father of her child?”
He lowered his gaze in shame before nodding slowly but as soon as his reply came, Suzy brushed his hands off and took a step away from him. He tried to grab her again but she avoided his every attempt, as if disgusted of the touch that she used to love.
“Su,” Myungsoo whispered in begging. “Please. I can explain.”
But Suzy could no longer hear anything nor can her mind process an explanation from the man who admitted of betraying her. Her head was already spinning with questions—questions that she was not even sure if she still wanted answers. However, she needed to vent it out, in an attempt to save at least a little of herself from entirely breaking.
“What…” She took a deep breath before continuing, “What did I do wrong? Why… why am I not enough?”
He observed as her gaze remained on the ground. She couldn’t even bear to look straight into his eyes, not oven onto his face. He found his heart breaking with hers as she trembled and tears started accumulating in her eyes.
“No, please no. You’ve done nothing wrong,” he said. “It’s my fault. It’s mine alone and you… You’re still more than enough for me-“
“Liar,” she cut him off and this time, he found her eyes looking directly at him. A few minutes ago, those eyes were narrating love, but now, they have nothing for him but anger.
“You’re a liar,” she repeated.
He bit his lip, and let her be because he knew that she had every right to be angry. If being angry could lessen her pain, then Myungsoo could even take punches from her if she wanted to but her words were sharper than any knife that could stab him alive.
“Would you have told me that something happened between the two of you if she did not get pregnant?” she asked and let out a scoff. “How many times were you doing it behind my back? Was she better than me? Is that it?”
“It was an accident…” his words trailed as he attempted yet again to hold her hand, but Suzy vehemently tapped away his hand.
“Don’t touch me,” she glared at him. “You’re disgusting.”
She thought of every smooth caress Myungsoo gave her, and him doing the same thing with Soojung. Suddenly, every memory of the touch and act of his love made her sick. She then felt the food that she prepared and they ate was starting to climb back to again. She felt nauseous and as the feeling of vomiting grew stronger, she run towards her bathroom. As soon as she got a grip of the sink, she started puking out all that she had eaten.
She heard a soft knock on the door as soon as she was done, but instead of opening it, she locked it, refusing to see the man who has made her sick up to the pit of her stomach. She dropped herself onto the tiled floor and rested her back at the door as if all the life and energy have been drained from her. She pulled her knees closer towards her as the tears started escaping from her eyes and her breaths started to become short sobs.
Myungsoo was on the other side, and as he listened to her cries, his heart clenched more. The girl he treasured so much was breaking because of him. He had promised her happiness and a forever, yet here he was again, causing her pain. He again, had dragged her into a situation which he was afraid was too difficult for them to survive further, especially with her trust for him, already broken. He would do anything to lessen her pain but unfortunately, she doesn’t even want to take any help from him.
“Suzy,” she heard him call at the other side of the door.
“Leave,” she tried her best to sound firm. “I don’t even want to see you right now.”
He closed his eyes tight and sighed before nodding, “Okay. I understand.”
He knew that she needed time and space to pull herself together first before they could properly talk. He didn’t want to leave her alone in that state but he knew that his presence would only bring her more agony.
“I know that you would take everything I say as a lie… but it was really an accident,” he added in a hoarse voice. “I was too drunk. I couldn’t even remember how it happened.”
He was about to say goodbye, but he feared that it might be his final farewell for her if he would do so, so instead he said, “I’ll take my leave.”
He looked back to her table, and saw how they were supposed to celebrate the night together yet he ruined it all. He walked back to the broken pieces of the bottle of champagne, and he picked up the pieces one by one until he had pricked his finger. He looked at the blood that slowly trickled down and wondered about its comparison to the agonizing pain Suzy was undergoing. Remembering that it was his fault, and how the broken pieces could also represent their relationship which could never be brought back, he blinked off his tears away. He successfully fixed everything, except for the heart of the girl in the bathroom whose cries still echoed as he left.
Myungsoo had no clue why his parents have called him over for dinner and he became more flabbergasted when he saw Soojung and her parents in the same round table. Thinking that it was another family gathering, he tried to calm himself. Showing off his casual smile that he had practiced faking since a long time ago, he approached the table and greeted.
“Good evening,” he bowed before sitting beside Soojung.
“Oh! Myungsoo! Come, here, my son,” Woo Sung, Soojung’s father, greeted him back joyfully.
“We’re here to celebrate,” Nam Joo added quickly with a wide grin.
Myungsoo reflected the smile, hiding the confusion in his eyes as he briefly threw Soojung a questioning look but the latter avoided it by also smiling to her mother.
“What are we celebrating for?” Myungsoo politely asked which caused a dead silence in the table.
“I see that your daughter here loves to make surprises for our son,” Hye Sung tried to salvage the situation with a chuckle, which proved to be effective as it was followed by an uproar of laughter.
“Could I do the honours for my son?” Min Jong asked and he got a series of nodding. He then turned to Myungsoo and with a crooked smile and a pat on the back, he whispered, “You’re going to be a father.”
At this time, Myungsoo could no longer hide the confusion but a wide grin was still plastered on his face as he faked joy behind his shock and asked, “W-What?”
“Ohhhh. Look at him. I also remember having disbelief because having a child is such a blessing that it is sometimes unbelievabl
