Back in Seoul
Seeking for CertaintyAs the car speeded its way, Suzy stared at her family and she watched as the figures became smaller and smaller until they were completely gone. She then comfortably rested her back at her seat and sighed as her eyes remained at the side window, watching as the scenery slowly changed. Noticing the silence that lurked inside the cab, she glanced at the male who sat beside her, and like her, he was just staring at the window.
“Sehun-a.”
“Hmm?” Sehun snapped out of his daze and looked at her with a smile.
“You’re quiet,” she commented.
“Ahhh,” he sheepishly scratched the back of his neck. “Should I tell you a story instead to keep you entertained?”
“Ani,” she shook her head. “I was just saying that this part of you is so unusual.”
He gave a small smile before mumbling, “I’m just thinking of the place and people that we left behind. I’d surely miss them.”
“Then, you could visit them sometime,” she suggested.
“Really?” he asked with a hopeful smile.
She just nodded as she answered, “I think my mom likes you. You’ve befriended the three too… so I don’t think there would be any problem if you’d come visit again.”
“I envy you for having such a great family,” Sehun whispered.
Suddenly, Suzy remembered Myungsoo saying the same exact words. She gave a bitter smile as she replied, “So I’ve been told.”
There was a mischievous smile on Sehun’s lips as he said, “So… does this mean that me courting you is okay for your family?”
“Even if they’re okay, as long as I say no, there’s nothing you could do, Oh Sehun,” she playfully glared at him.
“Tsss,” he hissed and she chuckled in reply.
But then, Suzy noticed how Sehun just stared at her for a moment so she asked, “Why?”
“Are you sure that you’re okay now?” he worriedly asked.
She shrugged her shoulders before her gaze fell on the window once more. “I don’t know but I just can’t keep running away from my problems like this.”
“Hmmm,” Sehun nodded in approval. Then, a short silence formed between the two until Sehun said, “I have a very random question in mind.”
“What is it?” she asked as she turned towards him.
“Why didn’t you pursue photography?”
“I actually dreamt of travelling the world and freezing every special moment into a photograph or trapping every beauty in a photo. But it was too expensive,” she answered. “I can’t possibly battle with others using an outdated camera. Besides, it’s hard to find a job with such course. I needed something that could make me and my family alive.”
“But it’s what you love to do, right?” he asked again.
She gave a sad smile before nodding. She sighed yet again before whispering, “But practicality outweighed my love for photography. I decided to let go because I thought that it was not meant for me.”
“Do you still love photography?” he asked.
“It was my first love,” she mumbled. “And truthfully, a part of me yearns for it every time.”
“You could always start where you stopped. Dreams are for keeping anyways,” Sehun beamed.
“You’re so optimistic about everything,” Suzy commented before chuckling. “Anyways, it’s my turn now to ask a very random question.”
“Shoot.”
Suzy’s smile slowly melted and her gaze turned sad as she asked, “How long does it take to move on from a past love?”
Sehun sighed before averting his gaze, “It depends on how much you love and value the person. But there was never a computation for it. People just start moving forward.”
“Does time really heal all wounds?” Suzy asked quietly.
“I think so. But how much time one needs… I don’t think there’s an answer for it,” he replied.
“Then what about you? Have you had any past love? How did you move on?”
“Yah. That’s not fair. You’re asking three more questions,” he laughed as he turned towards her but Suzy noticed how he felt uncomfortable and sad at the questions she blurted.
“Sorry,” she just mumbled before looking back at the window.
But then she heard him reply, “I’m a er for unrequited love. Same old story. I was in love with a girl who loved another man.”
“Then where is she now?”
She saw how he smiled yet his eyes showed how his heart shattered at his own answer.
“She’s already married.”
Suzy woke up and as her eyes adjusted to the light, she realized that she was back to her apartment. She tilted to the side and petted the dog that had been barking since 7am. She smiled as she said, “Good morning, Damon.”
As she finished giving food to her dog and cooking breakfast for herself, Suzy stared at the empty chair beside her. Earlier, as she brushed her teeth, she couldn’t help but notice the other toothbrush in the glass and the other towel that hung by the door. Everything in her apartment just reminds her more of Myungsoo. Everything reminds her that she was alone. Even the empty side of her bed told her so.
But then, the ringing of her doorbell snapped her out of her trance. She stood up to open the door but as she grabbed the knob, the possibility that the person on the other side was Myungsoo started to make her anxious. She gulped before she tiptoed and peeked at the small hole at the door. With a smile, she had gladly welcomed her visitor.
“Why are you here?” she tried to act cold.
“I was thinking that you might wake up feeling lonely so I decided to drop by,” Sehun beamed. “I brought breakfast too!”
“I was actually eating,” Suzy answered. “Come on in.”
As the boy settled at the empty chair, a small smile of relief formed on Suzy’s lips. But even before the two could start eating breakfast, her phone started ringing. She looked at the Caller ID first, making it sure that it was not Myungsoo before answering the call.
