The sister
Seeking for Certainty“You’ll do well. You’ll do just well,” Suzy said as she looked at herself in the mirror and checked her appearance. Her eyes then travelled to the watch and she frowned as she realized that her nervousness made her ready a little too early. As she plopped herself back to the sofa, her gaze landed on the pile of boxes near her door. Convinced that a few minutes would be enough to label those boxes, she smiled to herself and grabbed a marker.
“For donation,” she read her handwriting and another contented smile grazed her lips as she saw that she had successfully labelled all of the boxes. Two were destined for charity, another two for junkshop while she was planning to send one back home but a realization suddenly hit her: a special box was missing from the pile.
The plan to label the boxes had then become the search for the missing box. Suzy checked every corner of her apartment but still found no trace of the box that contained Myungsoo’s belongings together with their memories. She bit her nails as she tried hard to remember the last place she had seen the box but she couldn’t come up with a conclusion. All this time, she thought that it was just with the other boxes.
Just then, her doorbell rang cutting off the trance she was in. She immediately opened the door and Sehun’s smile welcomed her sight. The male then , “What’s this? Are you not ready yet?”
“I am…” but her voice faltered when she saw her reflection yet again. She was already drenched in sweat and her hair had become messy. Sighing, she told the male, “Come in. I’ll just change in five minutes.”
Staying true to her words, Suzy was done in less than five minutes. However, Sehun noticed how Suzy seemed to be consumed in a daze every now and then. He nudged her and asked, “What’s the matter?”
Without hesitation, she asked back, “Sehun-a. Have you seen a box… that has another long rectangular blue box inside?”
The smile that was playing on Sehun’s lips and the glitter in his eyes turned dull but he didn’t reply so Suzy tried adding a few more details, “The things inside the box are not homogenous. They’re very random but most of them were personal. Have you seen it?”
“No,” he shook his head. Sehun lied further as he faked an apologetic smile and said, “I must’ve taken it away with the other boxes.”
“To where? To the trash area?”
“I think so,” he whispered his reply.
“Maybe they haven’t thrown it away yet,” her voice echoed the little hope in her. She smiled at Sehun and said, “I’d just go and ask.”
Sehun could only watch as she inquired with the guard and the janitorial staff but as her shoulders slumped, he knew that all she got were sad news. He walked towards her and tapped her shoulder and Suzy just replied with a small smile as she mumbled, “They already threw it away yesterday.”
The male stared at her intently as he asked, “Was that box really that important? Were you intending to keep everything inside it?”
Suzy met his gaze and by the gloominess in her eyes and the sadness and loss painted on her face, Sehun already knew that it wasn’t merely a box of random stuff for Suzy – it was her treasure chest. Myungsoo’s memories and his belongings were still treasures that Suzy wanted to keep.
With a bitter smile she told then him, “Even if it’s important… even if I wanted to keep it, it doesn’t matter anymore. It’s already gone.”
Not wanting to dwell on the subject much longer, Sehun wrapped one arm on Suzy’s shoulder and said, “That box is a part of the past. Let’s think about the present…”
He then glanced at his watch before continuing, “…and the present says we’re about to run late for our appointment with Jessica Jung.”
Suzy has seen Jessica Jung in magazines and news before, but never in person. However, she knew very well that she was Soojung’s sister and she too, was Soojung’s bridesmaid in the wedding. Jessica’s work was based in New York but Suzy still knew that sooner or later, the world would become small for a designer and a clothing line manager. However, the least she expected was to meet the woman while she was in the crucial process of moving on from Jessica’s brother-in-law. But she couldn’t blame Fei for the assignment for she could gamble on the idea that her boss doesn’t have a clue about it.
While Jung Sooyeon wanted fame, Jung Soojung wanted to keep her life quiet so the relationship between the two was not that well-known unless you are acquainted with one of them. Suzy’s acquaintance with Soojung was not one that she wanted but one that she had to deal with especially when she’s about to work for her sister.
Suzy gulped as the door opened once more revealing a lean lady dressed in fitted jeans and plaid long sleeves. It was a casual look but the curled blonde locks of the woman still elucidated an elegant aura. Awed by the beauty in front of her, Suzy almost forgot to greet her with a bow but it was Jessica who greeted them first with a simple hello in English. Both Suzy and Sehun bowed politely and then, Jessica spoke, “I don’t think there’s a need for introductions. We know each other well, don’t we?”
Suzy chewed on her lower lip and gulped as she didn’t know the proper reply for Jessica’s statement. She then glanced at Sehun hoping that the male could be the one to make the conversation going, but as she did so, she realized that Sehun was also stiffer than usual and his face is unexpectedly pale.
Gaining no response from the two, Jessica chuckled and said, “I mean, you’d be working for me and I’m the one who requested the two of you. I think you should know my name and I should also know yours. Right?”
Suzy managed to give a little smile as she stuttered, “Y-Yes. Nice to meet you, Ms. Jung.”
“Sica,” Jessica corrected. “Just call me Sica. Come on in.”
She then opened the door for them and Suzy’s eyes marvelled at the sight of the place. It was a long hall packed with designers, models and more. There were spaces provided for tailoring, sewing, designing, photo shoots and the like. Overall, the place looked busy yet organized. Time passed with only Jessica talking, showing them the place and telling the names of her co-workers which were too many for Suzy to memorize, and the two did nothing but bow each time they were introduced.
“I just need your measurements for now then I’d call you again for a photo shoot once the clothes are done,” Jessica flashed a smile. “Ladies first. Suzy, please come with me.”
With nervous steps, she followed Jessica to her office and to make things more awkward, the two of them were left alone. She was sure that Jessica had many staff who could take the measuring work from her and having the thought that the woman had an underlying motive just made Suzy more worried. Without a word, Jessica started taking her measurements.
But as if she was possessed by some courage, Suzy managed to ask, “Why me?”
“Hmmm?” Jessica hummed.
“I don’t want to sound impolite but I’m curious,” Suzy gave her a knowing stare. “I’m sure you know me more than my name.”
“Don’t flatter yourself Suzy,” Jessica gave a crooked smile as she lifted Suzy’s limbs. “I know the both of you beyond your names.”
“Is it the reason why?” Suzy bravely asked. “Does my acquaintance with your s
