Seeking for Certainty“Auntie?”
“Aigoo~ Our Suzy has gotten so big and beautiful~” the accent was already evident when the elder woman sitting beside her mother greeted her. Even if she was confused, Suzy still walked towards her and welcomed her with a hug.
“What is auntie doing here?” Suzy asked politely with a smile.
“I came from a friend’s relative’s funeral,” she answered. “I didn’t want to sleep there and it’s already too late if go back home so I decided to sleep here instead.”
The woman then glanced at Sehun who was behind Suzy. As they met gazes, Sehun politely bowed at the female which sent her giggling. She turned to Suzy once more as she asked, “How about you? What are you doing here? Are you going to introduce a new boyfriend?”
“N-No,” Suzy waved her hand in denial. She peeked at Sehun through her shoulders before continuing, “I-I’m on a vacation. My boss sent me here to unwind.”
“Then who’s that guy?” her aunt asked further.
“Just a worried friend,” Sehun replied. He bowed again as he said, “I’m sorry for interrupting. My name’s Oh Sehun. Nice to meet you.”
Suzy’s aunt then glanced at Mrs. Bae and both exchanged bright smiles before her aunt playfully slapped Sehun’s arm and said, “It’s nice to meet a handsome guy like you too~”
“But… if auntie would stay here for the night… then where is she going to sleep?” Suzy asked.
“I can share a room with my sister,” her aunt quickly replied.
“Then…” Suzy’s words trailed.
“You’ll have to sleep in your room, my dear,” her mother whispered.
“Where is Sehun going to sleep?” Suzy questioned once more.
“Here in the sala,” Sehun answered.
“No, you can’t,” Mrs. Bae shook her head.
“Why? What’s wrong?” Sehun asked.
“There are only three heaters,” Mrs. Bae replied.
Sehun nodded, gaping. He then stared at nothingness for a while before asking, “Then where would I sleep?”
“Are we going to share your bed?”
“In your dreams, Oh Sehun,” Suzy answered before laying down the futon on the floor. Sehun chortled in reply and helped her in fixing his makeshift bed. He then comfortably laid down on the futon until Suzy teasingly glared at him before saying, “Just try doing something nasty and I swear you’d never get back to Seoul alive.”
Sehun gaped and huffed, “Are you really doubting me right now? I thought we’re friends!”
“Yah,” Suzy bellowed. “For your information, I never slept with a guy friend in the same room before.”
“I thought Howon hyung and Key hyung have already been here,” Sehun said with his eyebrows knitted.
“Yes, they did but they did not stay overnight,” Suzy informed.
“Uwah,” Sehun mockingly smiled. “Somehow, this makes me feel special.”
Suzy replied by throwing him his pillows to wipe the smirk off his face. Sehun just chuckled more as he caught the pillows and positioned it behind his head. The girl just rolled her eyes at him before switching off the lights and climbing onto her own bed.
Somehow, this makes me feel nervous, she thought as she fidgeted on her bed.
When she turned, she was surprised to see Sehun’s head propped at the edge of her bed. She glared at him yet again and asked in a stern whisper, “What?!”
“Good night,” Sehun beamed.
“I understand. Go to sleep,” Suzy uttered and pushed his head downwards and away from her bed. However, Suzy also found the corner of her lips rising into a smile as she thought of the guy’s childish yet sweet side.
She then faced the ceiling and marvelled at how the moonlight perfectly illuminated her room. It wasn’t that dark to make her afraid and it wasn’t that bright either to make her sleepless. As she closed her eyes, it was still Myungsoo’s face that flashed in her mind. Suddenly, she found herself recalling all the lovely memories they shared together. She smiled once more, despite the heavy feeling building inside her heart.
When she opened her eyes again, the silence made her yearn for Myungsoo’s voice. She thought of the times when sleep was elusive to her and how the male would either sing or talk until she falls into a deep slumber. Before, his voice used to be her favourite lullaby and as the thought ring in her head, she found the silence she was in lonely and deafening.
“Sehun?”
Suddenly, the female blurted out her companion’s name.
“Hmmm?” the male hummed back.
“Are you already asleep?” she asked.
“I’m answering you so of course, I’m not asleep yet,” Sehun lazily said. “You?”
“I’m also talking too so that means I’m awake,” she answered.
There was a short moment of silence before the male questioned, “What are you doing?”
“Thinking.”
“What are you thinking about?”
“Just… things,” she mumbled. She sighed before adding, “Life, per se.”
“Suzy, let’s just go to sleep,” Sehun let out a yawn. “Life’s too complicated. It’s going to be hard to think about that all night, you know.”
Another silence lurked and the male was on his way of getting a good sleep but then he was awakened by Suzy’s voice. She called for him once more, “Sehun?”
“Hmmm?” the male just hummed, too sleepy.
“How…” Suzy hesitated for a moment but chose to continue nonetheless, “How are you supposed to start a life without someone whom you had planned your future with?”
Sehun’s words were almost incoherent but Suzy managed to listen and understand him as he said, “I told you… it all begins with acceptance.”
The girl let his words resonate both in the room, in her mind and in her heart. She found herself fluttering her eyes closed as she called him again, “Sehun?”
“Hmmm?” the male hummed again, but this time, shorter and quieter; perhaps because of the sleepiness that has consumed him. But despite the drowsiness, the male’s lips curved into a smile as he heard her mumble,
“Good night.”
Myungsoo carefully walked towards her apartment with the bouquet of yellow roses in his hands. As usual, his heart was thumping furiously because of nervousness. However, he had mustered a smile as he prepared himself for their reunion. Checking himself the last time at the mirror in the elevator, he made sure that he was at his best condition to face her.
But then, the smile quickly melted into a sad one as he saw the bouquets of roses he had brought for her, wilting at her door. He bit his lip as he knocked on her apartment but no one answered. Not wanting to give up, he tried and tried until he got tired of standing. Dejected, he sat by her door and sighed.
