Forty Three

On The Rooftop

Lani exited the bathroom and entered her bedroom wearing only a towel. It was already past noon they were both starved. L.Joe sat on her bed with a wide smile across his face.

“You better get dressed for our date,” he remarked, “unless that’s what you’ll be wearing,” he smirked.

Lani glared at L.Joe before heading to her closet and opening the door. “How am I supposed to know how to dress if you won’t tell me where we’re going?”

“I don’t expect you to know, come sit,” he motioned for her to take a seat on the bed.

Lani obediently did as she was told and sat next to L.Joe. She watched as he got off the bed and reached under the bed, her curiosity rising. He pulled out a big rectangular box, wrapped in white with a giant red ribbon.

“Omo,” she exclaimed when L.Joe placed it on her lap. “What is this?”

“The next part of your birthday surprise,” he smiled.

She carefully untied the ribbon and lifted the lid off the box. Her eyes widened in awe when she saw the mint green dress, patterned with perfect pink flowers sitting in the box. She lifted it as she stood up to take a closer look and pressed it against her body. The dress was strapless and fitted at the top; it flared out at the waist and came done to right above her knees.

“It’s so pretty! Thank you L.Joe! Thank you so much!” Lani threw her arms around his neck, the dress still in her hands, and gave him a tight squeeze.

“You’re welcome babe,” he responded. “Now why don’t you get dressed as I shower?” L.Joe suggested.

Once L.Joe left the room, Lani slipped the dress on and carefully zipped up the back. She looked at herself in the mirror and couldn’t help but smile. The dress fit perfectly and the colours went well with her peachy skin. She blow dried her hair in the mirror before curling it into perfect spirals and applied her light, spring coloured makeup. She finished off her look with a pair of pink flats and a chic white purse.

“You look stunning…” were the only words L.Joe could manage to say once he saw Lani sitting on the couch waiting patiently for him.

The two left her apartment and jumped in a cab. L.Joe gave the address to the driver without letting Lani see. Lani stared out the window watching the scenery as they drove through the heart of Seoul. After about 20 minutes, the cab came to a stop and L.Joe opened the door for Lani. She stepped out and straightened her dress before looking up at the restaurant in front of her. Her jaw dropped when she saw the name: Le Saint-Ex.

“Omo!” was all Lani could say.

L.Joe’s smile widened, “surprise~” he chanted.

“I’ve heard so much of this place before! They make the best French food!”

“Well I thought you’d like to try something different.”

They entered the restaurant and were led to their table. L.Joe politely pulled out Lani’s chair for her before taking his own seat. They carefully read the menu and ordered appetizers then entrees. Lani and L.Joe both tried food they’ve never even heard of before each of which were delicious. Once they were done their meals, they ordered little French desserts filled with chocolate. They left the restaurant hand in hand, chatting and laughing. They openly walked along the streets of Seoul, people staring at them from all directions. Fan girls of L.Joe gave Lani intimidating looks and she couldn’t help but feel hurt and scared. L.Joe told her to ignore them, but that was almost impossible.

Finally, the harsh comments died down when the sun began to set and less people were outside. L.Joe had taken Lani to the amusement park and they spent the time on rides, playing games, and eating junk. Lani stood with cotton candy in one hand and ice cream in the other as she watched L.Joe attempt a basket ball game.

“I’m really good at basket ball,” L.Joe gloated.

“Yah, I don’t think this is the same thing,” she replied.

“Don’t worry baby, I’ll win you a nice prize.” A cocky smile spread across his face making Lani roll her eyes.

L.Joe grabbed a ball and shot it towards the hoop; it hit the hoop but bounced off. “That was just a practice. I’ll get it this time.” L.Joe tried once again, but like the first time, it bounced off. “One more time!” he gave the man running the game more money in exchange for the balls. Three more tries, three more fails. “Yah!” he yelled getting annoyed.

“It’s okay, let’s just go,” Lani suggested, slightly embarrassed.

“Aniyo, I said I’ll win you a prize.”

“You could probably buy me something nicer with all the money you’re wasting on this game.”

“No. I’m going to win.” L.Joe stubbornly handed the man more money. Each time he tried, he failed.

“Come on L.Joe,” Lani tried to pull him away.

“Just one more try.”

“You know these games are rigged… it’s not worth it.”

“One more time, just one more.”

Lani rolled her eyes and stepped back. L.Joe picked up the basketball, carefully aimed and shot it towards the hoop. It hit the backboard and then the rim before the ball finally went through the hoop.

“WOO! Did you see that! Told you I’d get it in! Hahaha!” L.Joe jumped up in delight as Lani stood there staring at him. “Pick a prize baby, any prize you want.”

“Actually,” the man running the game intervened, “you can pick any from the first two rows.”

L.Joe was dumbfounded. He stared at the stuffed animals that were no bigger than a foot tall. “I spent all that money for one of these little stuffed animals…?”

“I told you…” Lani muttered.

“Whatever, just pick something.”

Lani carefully looked at all the plushies and decided on a little white bunny with a pink bow on its ear. “I want this one,” she held it up to L.Joe with a cheeky smile, “isn’t it cute?”

“Yeah,” L.Joe smiled, “…but not worth all my money.”

It was now dark out and the park was no longer crowded. L.Joe led Lani to the other side, to the giant lit up Ferris wheel. L.Joe helped Lani into one of the cars and got in next to her. The ride started and he wrapped his arm around her shoulder. She comfortably rested her head on his chest and smiled up at him with the bunny plushie still in her hand. They sat in silence enjoying the view; the city looked like a million little lights shining in the night.

“Thank you L.Joe,” Lani quietly spoke, “for making this the best birthday celebration.”

“Anything for you,” L.Joe leaned down and gently pressed his lips to Lani’s forehead.
