Thirty Four
On The Rooftop
It had been over a week since Lani had her goodbye stage with Woohyun. Chunji had recovered and was out of the hospital. He spent all his time resting at home and could not practice or promote with Teen Top. Lani and Woohyun kept in touch and often texted each other. Woohyun was a fun guy to be around and Lani enjoyed his presence, not to mention the fact that he was her most favourite idol in the world.
“I just don’t know what to do,” Woohyun whined to Lani. He had opened up to her pretty easily and had told her about his secret girlfriend that he has been having problems with lately.
“Just leave her if you’re really that unhappy,” Lani replied as she took a sip of her latte. They were sitting in a small café just after it had gotten dark. Not many people were there and no one could recognize them in their “disguise” of sunglasses and a hat.
“I can’t do that,” he complained.
“It’s the only thing to do oppa. You should date someone who will treat you better,” she tried to reason with him.
“Someone like you?”
“Well… uh I guess. You just need a girl who makes you happy,” Lani smiled.
“I don’t know… I’ll have to think about it.”
“Well think hard!” Lani cutely cheered. “It’s getting late, so I better get going.”
Woohyun offered to walk Lani home and he wouldn’t take no as an answer; Lani had no choice but to let him. They walked side by side casually chatting as Lani led the way. Finally, they arrived in front of Lani’s apartment building. Lani said goodbye and contemplated on if she should invite Woohyun in or not. Lani decided on not, realizing that she let too many men –well boys in Teen Top’s case- into her apartment. She thanked Woohyun for his kindness and he warmly smiled back. Lani watched as he headed in the opposite direction until she could no longer see his figure walking away.

Niel sat alone in his room talking casually with his best friend, Jungwan, on the phone. The two couldn’t get enough of the gossip going around about Lani since they had known about it for so long. Niel had nothing against Lani, but some of her life choices interested him greatly; Niel had always been one to gossip. But, he was curious as to how her secret came out.
The next day after school, Niel walked home with Jungwan who promised to tutor him in math. Once they arrived at the house, the two kicked off their shoes and headed straight up to Jungwan’s room. Neither cared much about the mess they had made by the front door since no one else was home. Once upstairs, Niel sloppily dropped his school bag on the floor and plopped on the bed with a sigh.
“Yah! Is that anyway to act at someone else’s house?” Jungwan lightly scolded as he placed his own things on his desk chair.
“Hey, this is practically my house too, I used to come over almost every day,” Niel replied as he sat up.
“Yeah, used to.”
“It’s not my fault I always have a schedule to go to…”
“Whatever,” Jungwan brushed it off. “I’m going to get us a snack, be right back.”
Jungwan walked out of the room leaving Niel alone. Niel sat on the edge of the bed just looking around when something caught his eyes. On the other side of the room, there was a small cage with a tiny wheel spinning round and round. Niel got off the bed and walked towards it. He realized that on the spinning wheel, there was a tiny, light brown hamster. A smile spread across Niel’s face and he automatically opened the cage gate. The small hamster stopped running on the wheel and scurried over to Niel’s open palm. Once the hamster was safely sitting in Niel’s hand, he lifted it towards his face.
“Aw, hello wittle hamster,” Niel greeted in a baby voice.
The hamster stared up at Niel with its tiny brown eyes and Niel just wanted to pinch its round, chubby cheeks. As he continued to talk to it, Niel walked back towards the bed and sat down. A moment later, the bedroom door swung open and Niel jumped at the sudden noise, accidently opening his hand too much and releasing his hold on the hamster.
“Gwi-gwi!” Jungwan exclaimed as he watched his hamster run out the room. He immediately put down the tray of snacks and dashed out the door. Niel wasn’t far behind him as they ran down the hall. It didn’t take long for the little hamster to disappear into the shadows and out of sight.
“I’m sorry I took him out of his cage!” Niel panicked.
“It’s okay, just help me find him before he hurts himself,” Jungwan replied with the same panic as Niel.
The search of Gwi-gwi continued into the evening. They started in the hallway and made their way into the rooms. They searched every corner of Jungwan’s room before moving onto his parent’s room. They proceeded downstairs and searched the living room and kitchen. They opened every cupboard and closet, searched every shelf and every box, they looked in almost every corner of the house.
“We’ve looked everywhere… this is hopeless…” Jungwan sighed as he slumped onto the couch.
“We haven’t looked everywhere,” Niel pointed out with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“You don’t mean…”
Niel just smiled and nodded.
“She’ll kill us if she finds us in her room!”
“Jaehwa noona isn’t even home! She’ll never know we went in there!”
“But she never lets anyone into her room!”
“Come on. Gwi-gwi has to be in there. It’s the only place we haven’t checked,” Niel persuaded.
Jungwan let out an exasperated sigh, “fine…”
The two boys headed upstairs and to the end of the hall. Niel placed his hand on the door knob and carefully turned it as he pushed the door open. They cautiously entered the room and looked around. It looked like a regular room, there was a bed on one side, and a desk in the corner; they didn’t see anything worth hiding. They were careful to put back anything they touched and tried not to move a thing.
“I’ll look under the bed,” Jungwan informed.
“’kay, I’ll check the closet,” Niel responded.
Jungwan laid on his stomach as he pushed things aside to look in the confined space. As he did so, Niel proceeded towards the closet. He gently pushed the door open and felt around the wall for the light switch. He easily flicked it on and his eyes wandered the rather large closet.
“What the hell…” were the only words that escaped Niel’s lips.
