Chapter XXXII

His Uncanny Wife

Sera opened her eyes. She lifted her palm to cover her face from the sunlight peeking through her curtains. She groggily got up, walking over to the coffee table.

Let’s skip class. I’m waiting downstairs.

A chuckle escaped her lips as she proceeded to the bathroom to change.

“Don’t you think we’re skipping class to much?”

Jungkook turned around and grinned at her. He was standing there for a while, letting his thoughts consume him. But seeing her was a different thing. It brought him back to reality.

He walked towards her and shrugged. “Who needs school?”

“Wow, Jeon. You’ve gone bad-.” She winked, and he chuckled, stopping just one step away from her place. “Does the bad boy image suit me, Young Miss Park?”

She feigned concentration and her chin. “Hmmm, a change of hairstyle and a car would sure build the image.”

He grinned and took her hand. “Come, we’ll have fun today. No questions.”

She let him drag her out to where a black Lamborghini Aventador was parked. He spread his arms wide as he jogged towards it. “Well, do you like it?”

“No ing way! We don’t even have our license yet!”

He chuckled and took out something from his coat. He flashed it to her proudly. “Who said that?”

She jumped to his place and clapped excitedly. “You never fail to excite me, Jeon.” She tapped his cheek twice and motioned for him to get in the car.

Namjoon lazily walked inside his office. He loosed his tie and plopped on his revolving chair, sighing. Not moments after his secretary stepped in.

He furrowed his brow a little as he let her speak. “Young Master,  the heir to Samsung is outside. He requests to see you for a few minutes.”

“Let him in.” He replied, thinking what exactly Oh Sehun wanted with him. The man was no man for leisure visits.

Sehun stepped in and gave him a curt nod. “Namjoon.”

“Sehun. What’s up?” He motioned for him to sit but Sehun remained standing. He exhaled and walked to the glass windows. “Something is happening and I… honestly don’t know if it’s for the good or bad.”

Namjoon stood up and stood beside him. “What is it?”

He faced Namjoon. “Jongin. He says he’s in love with Sera.”

It took seconds before Namjoon fully processed the words. “He… He’s… Jongin’s never shown any sign before. Why now?”

“Apparently, when Sera left for Seoul, he hasn’t been the same.”

Namjoon sat on the couch and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I don’t know, Hun. This should be a good thing, right? Sera’s been suffering and this… this will end that.”

Sehun exhaled again, turning to look at Namjoon’s troubled figure. “I can see hesitation on your side, Joon. I feel the same way. I’m… not too sure about Sera anymore. Am I right to assume that we’re thinking of the same thing?”

Namjoon looked up. Oh Sehun never beat around the bush. He liked that about him.

“Yes, I think we are.”

“Where do you want to eat?” Jungkook asked, glancing at Sera as he drove. Sera excitedly jumped on her seat. “Should we go to ahjumma, Jeon?”

“Ahjumma?” He echoed, confused.

She rolled her eyes. “Your ahjumma, silly! You think I forgot about her heavenly spring rolls? And oh, let’s buy her some flowers and pastries too!”

He nodded, smiling to himself. She remembered. He wondered if she remembered everything, though.

“I’m happy he finally found someone who can understand him. You know, our Kookie’s been so shy ever since he was young, but he’s this very abnormal kid when you get to know him. Don’t you agree?”

Sera nodded and looked at Jungkook who was still eating.

“Anyway, please understand if he’s subtle about his feelings. I’ll leave you two now to enjoy yourselves.”

He glanced at Sera again only to find her staring back at him. She quickly looked away and cleared . Jungkook looked away too, the silence a little awkward. But, he couldn’t help but smile.

The silence finally ended when Sera’s phone began ringing. She looked at the caller and hesitated for a while, before she turned her phone off and stuck it inside her bag. Jungkook couldn’t help but tilt his head in confusion. “Not taking any class?”

She bit her lip and sighed. “Kai. He’s been calling me since last night.”

“Why are you… avoiding him?”

She thought for a while. “I can’t keep anything from you, Jeon.” She looked at him and smiled. “To be honest, I’m not avoiding him because I’m scared. I’m way past that already.”

Jungkook was confused. Way past what?

“Isn’t he the only thing that you want most in the world?” He asked, a hint of bitterness in his tone that he tried so much to hide. He wondered why he even dared to ask; he knew the answer.

She chuckled dryly. “Maybe. I don’t know. But I’m sure of one thing.”

He glanced at her and she smiled again. “I’m starting to move on, Jeon.”

Sekyung forced a smile as Haena glanced at her. She was sitting in front of Haena and Junghyun, listening to their wedding plans. They were talking about a lot— from cakes to color schemes.

Honestly it all would’ve been bearable if not for her stupid feelings. She didn’t know if they were dense to not see the situation or she was just sensitive.

We’re basically brother and sister now, but we had a relationship before. Now she is marrying him. And she’s my best friend. I’m the bride’s maid. Is that perfectly normal?

“It would be so much fun if suddenly Miley Cyrus performs wrecking ball on our reception!” Junghyun cackled, and the two girls couldn’t help but roll their eyes. The elder Jeon was always about spontaneity and fun.

Haena cleared after drinking her coffee. “So, when am I gonna meet Sera? I’ve heard so much about her from you, babe. I’m really looking forward to meeting her.” She narrowed her look at her fiancé.

Junghyun snorted. “I heard Jungkook took out his new car this morning. Probably out with Sera. Maybe tomorrow?”

“So, how is she?” Haena turned to Sekyung, unsatisfied. Sekyung smiled and thought for the right words. “She’s… not the typical chaebol daughter.”

Haena her chin. “I heard people call her the dragon lady?”

“They do.” Junghyun smiled proudly. “And I agree a hundred and one percent. Sera’s very good at what she does, for such a young age. And she’s really fun to be with. I’ve never seen my little bro so fond of someone before.”

“But I heard recent… issues concerning her days at the US?” Her brows furrowed a bit, to which Junghyun snickered and waved one hand. “Kids are kids. We all have our moments.”

“I’m excited to meet her. We should have like a girls’ night out.” She winked at Sekyung, who nodded in return.

Sera frowned as she stared at the crumbs on Jungkook’s lips. He was animatedly telling her a story about some movie he watched while gobbling down spring rolls. She sipped from her straw, but she was too bothered.

“Aish, you eat like a child.” She mumbled and bopped him on the forehead.

He stopped talking and frowned at her. “What?”

“You have food all over your lips, . It’s so dirty to look at.” She pointed at his lips, and he smiled sheepishly. “Oh,” he the sides of his lips and grinned. “All good?”

She almost face-palmed as she took out her handkerchief and wiped his lip hastily. “You can’t even look after yourself. What will happen to you when you grow old?”

He chuckled and grabbed her hand, to which she gasped a little. He wiggled his brows. “That won’t be a problem. I’m marrying you, right?”

She was about to give him the meanest remark possible but Ahjumma stepped in and gave them two bottles of Chilsung soda. “Omo, kids nowadays are so vocal.”

Sera smiled widely, almost too wide that Jungkook suppressed his laughter. He went on to play his part and kissed her hand. “Of course, Ahjumma, I want to show my fiancé how much I adore her.”

She met his playful stare and she faked a sweet chuckle. “Sorry, he gets really weird sometimes.”

“No, no! I perfectly understand. It’s good that he’s finally opening to someone, this little boy.” She turned to Jungkook and ruffled his hair, to which he whined in annoyance. “Ahjumma!”

Sera couldn’t help but laugh.

“Alright, kids, there’s nothing wrong with showing your affection.” She chuckled heartily and pinched Jungkook’s cheek. He made a face and turned to Sera, grinning at her. “Are you full, sweetie? Do you want to eat something else?”

She wanted to strangle him so bad. “I’m good.”

Ahjumma giggled and took their empty plates. “Well, I have more customers so I’ll leave you two.” She turned to leave, shaking her head. “Your honeymoon must be a jam-packed with all that love.”

Sera froze on her seat, blood rushing to her cheeks. Jungkook forced a chuckle and looked away.

The sun was already setting.  The two found themselves walking side by side on the busy streets of Myeongdong. Sera was looking around aimlessly at the shops, while Jungkook walked with his hands in his pocket, following her wherever she decided to go.

“Do you still have that pair of sneakers we bought when we ditched that company party?” She stopped abruptly and turned to him, only to bump on to his chest. He chuckled and held her shoulders. “Why are you so short?”

She rolled her eyes. “Blame it on my parents’ genes, idiot.”

“I like it. Makes you look vulnerable to me even if you’re not.” He ruffled her hair and she groaned. “Stop.”

He chuckled and slung an arm around her shoulder as they walked again.

“Why do you like it when I’m vulnerable?” She mumbled, almost inaudible but he caught it perfectly. He smiled to himself and shrugged. “Because you’re too strong.”

Her brows furrowed in confusion. “I’m not following your train of thoughts here, buddy.”

Jungkook heaved a deep sigh. “You’re too strong, Sera. And that’s good.”

“Then.. why do you—“

“But that makes you so independent.”

She snickered. “Isn’t that a good thing?”

“For others, yes. For me, I don’t know.”

They reached a bench and she sat down, stretching her legs as she yawned. He sat beside her, leaning his back and looking at the sky. She really wasn’t getting him. She impatiently nudged his arm. “You’re really confusing me, you know.”

“You did that to me few days ago.” He muttered lowly. But now I perfectly know what you are to me.

She frowned now, crossing her arms in frustration. “I couldn’t hear you! Ya, why are you being so… cryptic?”

He exhaled and turned to face her. “What is your problem?”

“You.” She mumbled. “I don’t even know what we’re talking about anymore.” She waved her hand dismissively and sighed. Her eyes followed a young boy who walked in front of them, busy with his cup of ice cream. She turned to him and grinned. “Can we get ice cream?”

He wasn’t even given the chance to reply for she was already prancing her way towards the stall. He watched her go and shook his head.

Pabo. Of course I like it when you’re vulnerable. That way I can protect you.

He got up lazily when she turned to face him, waving him to quickly come over.

Tell me now, what am I to you, Park Sera?

Sera bit her lip as she watched Jungkook trudge towards the stall. His eyes were staring back at him, almost as if he could read her mind.

But he couldn’t. And she comforted herself with that fact because honestly, she wasn’t so sure of what was happening anymore. She knew what she wanted. She was sure of who she was and the things she was afraid of. She knew her problems well, for they somehow made her and defined her.

Now, she wasn’t sure if her problems were still problems. Thus, she didn’t know who she was anymore. However, the presence of the man with the lazy grin walking towards her somehow made her feel better. It always did.
