Chapter XVII

His Uncanny Wife

NARRATOR

Kai happily pranced towards Sera’s room. He gave Jang a big grin as the old man escorted him. “I don’t think it’s a good time to wake her up yourself, Young Master Kim…”

“Oh please,” Kai snickered in response. “I’ve woken up that little brat a hundred times. I can handle her wrath.”

“But—“

Kai stopped and held Jang’s shoulder. “It’s really no problem, Jang.”

The old man could only sigh as Kai pushed the doors open.

He first ran to the curtains to push them aside. Sunlight quickly poured over the room. He next danced his way to her bed, but what he saw caught him off guard.

Sera was sleeping comfortablY, her head buried in a pillow. Her leg was outstretched and was comfortably rested on top of another pair of legs— Jungkook. The latter had his mouth slightly open, light snores escaping as his chest rose up and down. Because Sera was snuggled closely to his side, one of his arm was buried under her waist.

A deep chuckle woke Kai up from his daze. Jang shook his head as he looked at the two. A smile was playing on his lips. “They must’ve gotten cold last night.”

“Jungkook sleeps here?” Kai finally managed to say.

Jang gave him a smile. “No, but him sleeping over is not unusual. They must’ve slept late talking.”

“Oh.” His head turned back at the two. His jaw visibly clenched.

Jang walked to Sera’s side of the bed and gently tapped her cheek. Her nose scrunched as her lids slowly fluttered open. She saw Jungkook first and groaned. “Ya, Jeon Jungkook.” She groggily said, poking his stomach. The latter squirmed but didn’t wake up. She clipped his nose, and a few seconds he was up, gasping for air.

“What the hell was that for?” He said, frowning.

She just shrugged and slid out of bed. She came face to face with Kai, her head tilting. “Jonginnie?”

“Hey cupcake.” He smiled slightly, ruffling her hair. “I was thinking of sending you to school. I’m going to Macau for a few days.”

They heard the door shut close. Sera looked around to see that Jang and Jungkook had left. She turned back to Kai and nodded. “Sure, but first let me shower. And please don’t forget my egg tarts.”

“Of course.” He chuckled and plopped on the couch. She walked around the room to find her phone; his eyes following her. His brows furrowed when he looked at the bed once again.

“Sera.” He said, a deep sigh escaping his lips.

“Hmmm?” She replied, busy looking at her phone. He bit his lip for a second before speaking. “You’re really just friends with Jungkook, right?”

She finally looked up, one eyebrow raised at him. “Duh. Why?”

“Nothing. It’s just that… he slept here last night and stuff.”

“Kai.” She looked at him pointedly. “You and Sehun sleep beside me all the time. What’s the difference?”

He didn’t respond.

“I’m gonna hit the bathroom now.” She murmured and he heard the door shut lightly. Kai closed his eyes and reclined on his seat.

Only you just met him, and we’ve known each other for years.

Yoongi handed Sera the bowl of popcorn. She gave him a small smile and began eating. They wordlessly sat side by side in front of the television.

“How was school?” Namjoon plopped beside her, interrupting the silence she was evidently enjoying. She grunted at him and looked back at the tv.

Namjoon was not amused. He bopped her forehead earning him a death glare. “It was good, duh. Last day is always good. Now shush.” She almost seethed.

“Are you on your period?” He shot back, and Sera just looked at him glumly.

“Yes. And now you know you shouldn’t be bugging me, Oppa.”

Jungkook walked out the room, already changed into casual clothes. “The couch is white. Just saying.”

Sera looked up, jaw clenched. “Just because I have my period, doesn’t mean I’m gonna bleed everywhere and make a mess.”

“I know…” He muttered, slowly walking back to his room.

“Idiot, let’s go.” She trudged towards the door and Jungkook hesitantly trailed behind. Namjoon sighed and stood up, shaking his head.

“Bye Suga.” He gave Yoongi a tap on the shoulder and the latter just shrugged. As soon as the doors beeped closed he heaved a sigh.

“Finally.” He reclined on the couch and closed his eyes, but before he could drift to sleep the door beeped open.

“Hyung, we’re here!”

He immediately recognized the voices of the others, and he couldn’t help but frown and curse. “It’s ing hard to find peace and quiet nowadays.”

“What is this all about, anyway?” Sera looked around, observing the hustle and bustle of the company building. Namjoon was leading the way, his secretary trailing behind them. Jungkook was just walking mindlessly.

The elevator doors opened and they stepped in.

“Uncle wants you to not waste your semester break.”

She shrugged. “Unless he’s giving me an all-expense paid trip somewhere far from here, then I’m not wasting it.”

“I’m not wasting it as long as I have my bed with me.” Jungkook mumbled.

Namjoon wanted to hit them both so much. “Well sorry to disappoint you two pigs, but none of those things are going to happen.”

“Then we should just leave.” Sera shot back icily. The secretary clearly flinched a little.

“Just control your hormonal rage a little bit more, honey.” Namjoon said sweetly as they stepped out.

The topmost floor was the offices of the executives. Unlike the evidently busy atmosphere of the lower floors, the topmost floor was eerily silent. A lone reception counter was positioned on the middle of the floor.

“Young Master Kim, good morning. Your uncle is in the lounge with the Jeons.” She smiled politely and gave them a small bow. Sera couldn’t care less; she just wanted to go home.

They crossed a vast glass hallway that led to the lounge. As soon as they stepped inside, the silence was broken.

“Kids, you’re here!” Mrs. Jeon stood up and greeted them both with hugs and kisses. Mrs. Park was more discreet, offering them both a smile. The two elder men were standing by the glass walls, deep in conversation.

Sera walked to her father’s side. The conversation abruptly ended, and Mr. Jeon gave her a smile. “Sera, you’re here. Where’s Ju—“

“I’m right here, Abbeoji.” Jungkook stpped forward and bowed a little.

Mr. Park clasped his hands together. “Good. We’ve been waiting for the both of you.” He went to the wooden table beside the room and picked up two folders. “I know your semester is not that long, but it’s good that you have something to do.”

Jungkook wanted to run out of the room. He felt suffocated. He didn’t want any responsibilities. He just wanted to relax on his break and work on his music.

“Here you can find all the basic information on the subsidiary merger project.” He handed the folders to the both of them. “I want you to review them.”

“Why are—“ Sera stopped short when Namjoon shot him a look. She cleared and again began.

“Forgive me for asking, but don’t we have analysts to do that?”

A smirk played on Mr. Park’s lips. “Yes, correct.”

“We want you in the project, kids.” Mr. Jeon declared, and Sera couldn’t help but grin. “Really?”

The smiles on the elders confirmed her question. She opened the folder and browsed over the files.

“Finally, some work.” She muttered, her face brightening up as she excitedly looked at the papers.

“We’re trusting you in this, okay? This is a big project. Namjoon will be beside you to help. Treat this not just as your training grounds but also an outlet to showcase what you can do.”

Jungkook hid his annoyance. Of course she’d be delighted, he thought. But he wasn’t like her. He didn’t want any of this. Not yet.

“You’ll be under my supervision.” Namjoon said, tapping his shoulder and waking him up from his thoughts. He reluctantly nodded and mindlessly browsed the papers.

The room returned turned busy with all the talks and planning.

Sera glanced t Jungkook and noticed his unease. She stepped out of the cirle and sat beside him.

“Jeon.”

He looked at her and offered a small smile. She didn’t know why, but she hated that smile. She hated seeing something forced. “.” She mumbled, hitting his leg. He frowned in an instant. “I swear, your mood swings are the worst.”

“I’ll be beside you all the time, you know.” She looked away, looking at the views on the glass walls.

She heard him grunt. “Like that’s a good thing.”

“I mean on this work thing they want us to do.” She replied, and he sighed. They remained silent for a few seconds before she scooted closer to him. “Just work on your music. I’ll work on this.” She muttered.

His head turned to her direction. “What do you—“

“Just help me on some things. I know this is not what you want right now, but I do want this. So win-win situation, let me work and I’ll let you work.” She winked.

He stared at her for a while, all the while wondering how cunning the girl sitting beside her was. Sure, she was uncanny, weird, and all of those things, but she was also straight to the point sly.

A smile played on his lips. “You like making deals, don’t you?”

“As long as I get what I want. So?”

“Sure. We stay together and we get what we want, right?” He chuckled lowly. Suddenly it didn't seem so diasppointing for him anymore. She sure knew how to handle these things.

She smirked and tapped his cheek. “That’s what friends are for, Jeon.”

They both looked away from each oher when the doors suddenly opened.

“Noona.” Jungkook gasped. Sekyung walked in gracefully, offering her respects to the elders. She handed them some files and discussed for a while before she went to Jungkook’s place. He stood up and hugged her lightly.

“I see you’ve heard the news?” She raised an eyebrow, amused. She glanced at Sera who wasn’t paying any attention. She was browsing through her folder.

Jungkook nodded. “Yeah, some work for us. Oh by the way,” He tugged on her wrist and pulled her up. “This is Sera, my fiancé.”

“Nice to finally met you, Sera. I’m Sekyung.” She extended her hand and Sera shook it firmly. “Nice to meet you.”

“So, what do you think about the progress of the project? I heard you’re enthusiastic to be on the team. Your Namjoon Oppa and I will be supervising you both.”

“To be completely honest, I think it’s unjustifiably slow.” She spoke.

Sekyung’s eyes focused on her instantly. “Really?” She smiled, now amused. “Why do you think so?”

“It’s behind the target time schedule, and the planning is dragging along.”

Sekyung shook her head. “Sera, these projects are not the usual ones. It takes critical planning stages and meticulous inspection before it can go thru.”

“I know about that, and I also know it got delayed because the board was waiting for the arrival of one member of the team. Projects like these also require full commitment and professionalism.”

Jungkook was getting bored.

“For a high school student, you are good at this, Sera.” Sekyung said. “I’ll make sure you’ll learn more on the days ahead. For now, I hope you’ll find my supervision enlightening and helpful.”

Sera smiled a little. “Yes, I’m sure it would.”

Namjoon joined them. “I’m hungry. Want to eat?” He whispered.

“Dinner?” She smiled.

“Go ahead, fatso. I’ll sat with noona. We have some catching up to do.” Jungkook answered, and Sera shrugged. “Sure, see you.” She nodded at them both and turned to leave when Jungkook held her wrist.

“What?”

“Is… Kai going with you?” He asked, and she shook her head. “He’s in Macau for some business.”

“Okay. Don’t eat too much, you’re getting fat.” He muttered and let go. She rolled her eyes before leaving.

When they stepped inside the elevator Namjoon automatically spoke. “How do you find Sekyung?”

“Typical business woman. Is she family?”

“Of the Jeons, yes.” He replied as he leaned on the side. “She’s handling the Jeon’s western offices, I heard.”

She just hummed in understanding.

“Oh by the way,” she turned to look at her cousin. “Who was that executive that everyone was waiting for? The reason for delay?”

“Oh. That’s her.”

She chuckled in amusement. “I just called her unprofessional and uncommitted.”

“Wh-what?” He gaped at her. “You did what?”

“My bad.” She just shrugged and pulled him out.
