Since I was assigned to America for about a year, I decided to talk to my superior about my last day with them ten months into being an expatriate.

"You're leaving?" He gestured animatedly, eyes widened in shock.

My expression mirrored his. I was sure my boss back in Korea told me it was only for a year, and his reaction caused a frown to form on my forehead. "Did you not know? I was sent here for a year, sir."

"Ah, it might have slipped my mind." He sighed, scratching his head. "Maybe there was something like that, maybe there wasn't."

I pressed my lips together at his reply. I wasn't completely fluent in English but I knew enough to tell he wasn't ready to let me go.

This isn't good. I should have raised this issue earlier.

"You see, Donghyun." I tried a smile, still unused to my accented name. "I can't afford to let you go. You're doing such a good job and it's going to be hard to find a replacement for you."

"But maybe you could put up a job notice from now onwards." I suggested, trying my best not to sound pushy.

"I was sure you were going to immigrate here. Don't you like America? The girls are pretty here." He tried selling, and I really didn't want to have this talk with him. "I could introduce you to a few."

"I have a lover back in Korea, sir." I cut him off and forced my facial muscles to pull off a polite smile.

"She hasn't moved on?" He raised his eyebrow in mild amusement, shrugging lightly. I didn't want to take the pronoun he used to offence, nor his skeptical tone.

"I apologise, but I really came here to talk about being transferred back to Korea."

"Well..." He frowned deeply, patting my shoulders a moment after. "I have to keep you around for another six months at least, Donghyun. I'm sorry, but your dear girlfriend will have to wait. That is, if she's waiting."

I clenched my fists behind my back and felt my fingernails dig into my palm. Not only was he insulting Minwoo, but also extending my stay for another four months.

"Alright, I'll be leaving in six months."
