Twenty-six
Hold My HandJungshin’s expression was one of resignation when he opened the door and Yonghwa stood there fuming with an equally furious Minhyuk behind him. Yonghwa didn’t even give him time to say a thing or explain as he grabbed his brother’s shirt and propelled him backward into the small studio apartment Jungshin lived in.
“What the?!” Jungshin shouted as he tried to get back to his feet after the sudden attack.
Yonghwa merely silenced him with a fist sending Jungshin sprawling. He stood there with Minhyuk, a few feet away, waiting for his brother to pick himself up off the floor.
Jungshin wiped the blood off his mouth as he stumbled to his feet, “What the hell is wrong with you, Hyung?!”
“WHY THE DID YOU DO IT?” Yonghwa asked in a deadly quiet voice.
“Why, Jungshin?”
Silence followed as an uneasy expression crawled across Jungshin’s face. His lips drooped and his eyes became dull. At least the little er wasn’t pretending ignorance.
Jungshin dragged a hand across his mouth again, his hand coming away smeared with blood, “I know it won’t mean much now… But I’m really very sorry, Hyung…”
Yonghwa exploded right then and there. Jungshin didn’t even try to defend himself. He went down on the floor and this time he didn’t get up. He allowed Yonghwa to pound his fist to his face, the force was enough to kill him. But Jungshin didn’t even fight back.
“Sorry? You’re saying sorry?!” Yonghwa raged at him. This man before him was no longer his brother. He didn’t recognize who his brother had become. Sure, he tried his best to give Jungshin the love and support he needed but this was too much.
What did he do wrong for things to get so ed up?
“You tried to her, goddamit! Who does that sort of thing?!! And you even had the guts to lie to me about it… about her! What the hell is wrong with you?!! You were even close to her, and she treated you like a close friend and a brother! She was the woman I was going to marry! I love her so much, why oh why, would you even do something like that, Jungshin-ah?”
“M-Mom,” Jungshin whispered in a weary voice.
“MOM? She put you up to this?” Yonghwa took a step back, stunned. Sure he knew his mother didn’t like her, but to think she was a woman and yet she’d subject another to this treatment?
Why?
What the hell was wrong with his family?
If he didn’t meet Seohyun and asked her out, she wouldn’t be lying on that hospital bed right now fighting for her life. He was the cause of all the suffering she’d gone through. He had inevitably changed the course of her life and instead of giving her love and care, all he’s done is hurt her time and time again.
Jungshin dragged himself only to lean against the wall, putting hand through his hair. His expression defeated. He was panting and tears ran freely from his eyes. He knew he deserved this. He hadn’t experienced a peaceful night of sleep ever since he tried to hurt her. That scene where she begged him to stop would always replay before his eyes and he hated him
