Eighteen
Hold My HandTears blurred her vision as her thoughts drifted back to that day almost seven months ago.
Seohyun stared worriedly at the pregnancy test on her hands. She felt a mixture of joy and fear in her chest. She quickly hid the stick and smiled as she imagined telling Yonghwa the news. She didn’t think he’d be upset, they were planning to get married soon and they often had conversations about starting a family.
She couldn’t wait to tell him. She searched her memory for what he had going on in the office today. He didn’t have any important meetings and he was supposed to be in his office the whole afternoon. That surely meant it was alright if she popped in to surprise him of the good news.
She hugged herself in excited as she grabbed her things to go out.
A noise from the living room halted her. Then she smiled to herself, “Oh this would be perfect, Yonghwa oppa is home early.” Today, his timing was indeed impeccable.
She started to call out for him when Jungshin appeared in the doorway to the bedroom.
She was momentarily speechless, while Jungshin did pop in frequently he never did it without Yonghwa around. He had to know Yonghwa was at work today.
“Jungshin chinggu-ah, what are you doing here? Oppa’s at work and I don’t expect him back until later.”
“I came to talk to you,” Jungshin replied coldly. The hair on her spine stood up as the room suddenly became smaller when he walked towards her. They were friends and through the months that she’d gone out with Yonghwa, the two had gotten closer. But this Jungshin before her for some reason was really scaring her.
“W-What’s up? Why don’t we go to the living room,” she asked as she started to head out but a hand shot out to grab hers to stop her. Anxiety was prickling through her veins as she felt that something was definitely off him today.
“How much would you need to walk away from Hyung?” he asked bluntly and Seohyun’s eyes widened as she took time to comprehend what she just heard.
“E-Excuse me?” she asked, thinking she just didn’t hear him correctly.
“Stop playing dumb Seohyun-ah. It doesn’t suit a smart girl like yourself. How much would it need for you to dump Hyung and leave him for good?”
“You’re actually offering me money to leave your brother?!!” she asked her voice raising a few octaves higher.
“Did your mother put you up to this? I’m not leaving Yonghwa! I love him, have me sign a prenuptial agreement or whatever. I don’t want his money, I do love him! And he loves me, we’re getting married Jungshin-ah.”
Something resembling genuine regret flickered across his face. He fidgeted nervously and pinned her with his stare, “I’d hope you’d make it easy for me. It’s not a small amount we’re offering.”
The “we” in his statement confirmed Seohyun’s suspicions about her future mother-in-law. She was about to tell Jungshin to back off when the look in his eyes frightened her as she hastily stepped back from him.
“I think you need to go now,” she said as she tried to reach out for her phone.
Jungshin suddenly lunged across the bed, knocking the phone from her hand. She was so stunned by the sudden attack that for a moment she didn’t--- couldn’t--- defend herself.
He shoved her down on the bed, his hands moving roughly over her body, pushing at her shirt, pulling her pants. She drew her knee up trying to catch him in the groin, but he dodged and then rolled her underneath him.
She cried out in pain at the rough mauling. She was furious and terrified at the same time. He fully intended to her in Yonghwa’s bed. Had he lost his mind? Yonghwa would su
