Twenty Two
Free My Heart“Thursday calls for a pop quiz!” The English teacher put down his binder.
“Did you study?” Yena whispered to Ara.
“Do I ever?”
“What am I gonna do? I can’t fail. My parents will take away my credit cards and phone if I do!” Yena worried.
“Don’t worry, remember ssaem told us we have one chance to fail...as long as everyone fails.” Ara reminded her.
“Just hope that everyone fails.” Ara finished.

“Time’s up! Work on this assignment, work on it while I mark the papers.”
“Mr. Edwards?” Ara raised her hand.
“Yes?”
“Is it true that if everyone fails then the mark doesn’t count?”
“In English please.”
“Uh…” She stuttered.
“Can anyone help her?”
“Fail…no mark?” Jaehwan attempted.
“No. You’ll still get a mark if you fail.” Their teacher answered in English.
“I think she’s wondering whether the mark still counts if everyone in the class fails.” Aeri spoke in fluent English.
Everyone turned and looked at Aeri.
“Woah Aeri…since when were you good at English?” Kwangmin gasped.
Even Hoya was shocked.
"English academy?" Aeri shrugged.
“Oh, as I said before. You all have a onetime chance. If everyone fails, then the mark won’t count. But! If even one person gets a good mark, this mark will count.” He explained in Korean.
“Okay.” Ara nodded.
“See you’ll be fine.” Ara assured Yena.
But after hearing Aeri speak, Yena wasn’t so sure anymore.
“Kim Aeri, you better mess this up.” She said to herself, glaring back at Aeri.
~
Everyone was handed back their paper; they all failed.
“Kim Aeri.”
“Yes?” Aeri look up at the teacher.
“I’d like to talk to you after class.” He gave her a serious look.
He kept her test paper.
“Since everyone failed. I’m going give you a retest next class. Study hard.”
“And for a second I thought she knew something about English. She’s such an act.” Yena laughed.
~
“Mr. Edwards, you wanted to see me?” Aeri
