Every member in the island household is present at lunch
time. This includes Rafael.

I’m just glad, everybody is here.

PACO
Another day in paradise po, Lolo. I
wish something exciting will happen
today!

DONA CONSUELO
Saan ba ang balak niyong pumunta
mamaya?

ENZO
Doon po sa manggahan. Hitik na
hitik na siguro po ang mga puno
natin ngayon, di ba Lola?

DONA CONSUELO
Ay malamang! Naku, magpasama kayo
kay Julio, tatay niya kasi si Berto,
ang taga-pangalaga ng mga mangga.

JANNA
Talaga po, Lola. Sabi nga ni Enzo,
mas masarap pa raw yung mangga niyo
dito kesa dun sa mga galing sa Zambales
at Guimaras?

DONA CONSUELO
Naku, iha. Walang kasing tamis ang
mga mangga dito. At malalaki pa
ang variety namin dito. Special
breed kasi itong amin. Alvarez
strain ang tawag sa aming mangga.
Pang-export quality nga ang mga iyan.

LIZ
Talaga po? It must be worth a
fortune itong manggahan ninyo?

PACO
As if you really need more money!

DON IGNACIO
Hay naku Paco. Ang mga mangga
namin ay para lang sa consumption
ng mga taga San Nicholas at sa mga
karatig isla nito. Hindi namin ito
ginagawang business. Saka maliit lang naman ang
aming maggahan.

PACO
Lolo, but it should be! If you’ll
let me, I can manage it for you.
We’ll make the operations more
productive...

ENZO
Pare, pare, sandali lang!
Nakakalimutan mo atang medisina ang
kurso mo?

PACO
Pare, I was just suggesting...

Meanwhile, Tinay comes in with some desserts.

TINAY
Siya nga pala, senyorito, natanggal
na po ni Julio ang mga palaka sa banyo!

RAFAEL
(looking ignorantly at Lena,
then at Enzo)
Palaka?

JANNA
May naglagay ng frogs duon sa banyo
sa itaas.

ENZO
Merong tao kasing akala niya
nakakatawa siya, pero hindi.

LIZ
Honestly, how could those frogs end up doon
sa loob ng inidoro?

Lena continues to eat her lunch, smiling, trying to play it cool.

ENZO
(looking at Lena)
Obviously, somebody must have put
them in there. Someone who
obviously knows I don’t like them...

JANNA
Sweetie, I did not know you’re
afraid of frogs. Siguro sobrang
kinabahan ka kagabi ano?

ENZO
Correction! I’m not afraid of frogs,
I’m afraid of toads...Yung mga
malalaking palaka! They hideous.
Puno sila ng kulugo!

RAFAEL
Bro, I remember you used to scream
like a girl whenever makakakita ka
ng isang palaka...

PACO
Ha?! Pare, ikaw, screaming like a girl! ROTFL!

DON IGNACIO
R.O. T....ano yun?

JANNA
Rolling on the floor laughing po,
Lolo! Alam mo Rafael, kagabi he did
scream like a girl. Kala ko nga may
kalabaw na nanganganak. Si Enzo pala.

DONA CONSUELO
Nabahala nga kami sa sigaw mo
kagabi, apo! muntik na kaming magpatawag ng
pulis.

ENZO
Can everybody just cut it out.
It’s not funny! Those toads could kill!

JANNA
Kill? Killer frogs? Ha ha ha.

RAFAEL
Alam mo kasi, Janna, kaya takot si
Enzo sa palaka dahil ang kanyang
paboritong aso dati na si Tutong,
nalason dahil kumain ng isang palaka.

ENZO
Didn’t you know na merong ang mga
toads na poison sacs sa ilalim ng
kanilang balat na pwedeng ikamatay
ng mga maliliit na hayop o kaya
ikabulag ng tao?

LENA
Hindi naman lahat ng palaka meron nun!

ENZO
Sinong may sabi sa iyo nun?
Nakahawak ka na ba ng palakang may
lason? May aso ka bang namatay
dahil dito? Kasi ako meron, meron,
meron!

RAFAEL
Pasensya ka na kay Enzo, Lena!
Ganyan lang talaga yan kapag napagusapan
si Tutong. Favorite niya
kasing aso yun!

LENA
Tutong?

ENZO
Ops, ops,pinangungunahan na kita
Lena, huwag mong insultuhin ang
memorya ng asong iyon. Sinagip
niya ang buhay ko. Kung hindi, ako
sana ang nalason ng palaka! Kaya
hindi ko talaga siya makakalimutan.

RAFAEL
Tol naman, kaya naman nalason ng
palaka si Tutong ay dahil di niya
mapigilan na kagat-kagatin ang
kawawang palaka, kaya ayun nagsecrete
ng poison ang palaka. Yung
aso mo, actually died of katakawan.

ENZO
Basta, I had great times and good
memories with that dog.

JANNA
Sweetie, hindi ko alam na may pet
obsession ka pala dati.

ENZO
Hindi lang siya basta pet, kaibigan
ko yung asong iyon. Limang taon
kaming magkasama nun.

RAFAEL
Guys, siya talaga ang first real
relationship ni Enzo, si TUTONG.
First love never dies ika nga. You
guys should see the grave na ginawa
namin para sa kanya. Andun malapit
sa garden, may lapida pa yun.

LENA
Ay, gusto kong makita yan!

ENZO
Pare naman! They must think I’m
really wierd...

JANNA
Oh my gosh, that was the
understatement of the year! Pero
di bale sweetie, mahal pa rin kita,
even if that convoluted mind of
yours will take you directly to a
mental institution, I will still go
with you.

ENZO
Thanks sweetie! That’s what I’m
"crazy" about you. You are always
on my side no matter what.

JANNA
Yucks, Cornicks...

Enzo gives Janna a peck on the cheek. Lena rolled her eyes
in disbelief. Rafael and Paco could not stop themselves from
laughing. The rest of the meal though proceeded "normally."

INT. ISLAND MANSION - STUDY - FEW HOURS LATER

Lena enters the study. It has been a while since she last
entered it. The far end of the room opens up to a veranda
over-looking the ocean. In the middle of the room, facing
the door is a large mahogany work desk. It contains the
main personal computer that the family uses. Behind the
desk is a built-in bookshelf containing of more than a
thousand wall-to-wall books.

A picture on the corner of the room catches her attention.
The frame holding appears to be old. It was a picture of
Enzo and his Lolo Ignacio in a city foreign to Lena. Enzo
was about 10 at the time. His lolo Ignacio did not have as
much gray hairs then than he has today. She moves in closer.

Both Enzo and Lolo Ignacio in the picture, seemed to be
enjoying the scenery and each other’s company. Lena thought
it was adorable.

From behind her, out of nowhere, Dona Consuelo suddenly
appeared, startling Lena.

DONA CONSUELO
Lena, andito ka pala? Hindi ka pala
sumama sa kanila sa manggahan?

LENA
Ay...hindi na po ako sumama Lola,
nagpaiwan na lang ho kami ni Rafael.

DONA CONSUELO
Eh, saan na si Rafael?

LENA
Nagpaalam na ho siya, kailangan daw
niyang umuwi ng maaga.

DONA CONSUELO
Ah ganon ba?

LENA
Ang ganda ho ng picture na ito.
Saan ho ba ito kuha?

DONA CONSUELO
Ay yan ba? Kuha yan nung una
kaming nagbakasyon sa Europa. Ako
ang kumuha niyang litrato.

LENA
Ang ganda ho Lola ng lugar na ito.
Saan ho ba ito?

DONA CONSUELO
Ah sa Espanya yan...sa Madrid!

LENA
Madrid?

DONA CONSUELO
Oo, alam mo iha ang ganda ng
Espanya. Kahit yung Barcelona at
Ibiza, sobrang ganda din. Di bale
sa susunod naming trip, isasama kita.

LENA
Talaga po? Hindi pa ho ako
nakakarating sa ibang bansa, kahit
na ho sa ibang bahagi ng Pilipinas
maliban sa Manila...ngayon pa lang.

Lena suddenly remembers her and her brother’s ill-fated
trip.

Noticing that she was a bit down, Dona Consuelo moves closer
to her and wipes the tears from her cheeks.

DONA CONSUELO
Alam mo Lena, hindi na iba ang
turing namin sa iyo. Parang ang
tagal tagal mo nang miyembro ng
aming pamilya. Ganyan ang pakiramdam
namin sa iyo. Parang ikaw yung
missing piece dito sa bahay. Siguro
plinano talaga ng Diyos na mapunta
ka dito sa amin.

LENA
Lola...

DONA CONSUELO
Nagpapasalamat ako sa araw-araw na
nandito ka sa amin. Natutuwa
talaga ako sa iyo iha. Sinasabi ko
nga sa sarili ko, kung meron sana
akong anak na babae, sana katulad
mo na lang. Sana nga, kung pupuwede nga lang,
gusto ko tunay na
kitang apo.

LENA
Lola, andito naman po ako...

DONA CONSUELO
Alam mo Lena, naiisip ko pa lang na
balang araw, pag naisipan mong
umalis, masasaktan talaga kami ng
husto kasi napamahal ka na sa amin...

Lena gives Dona Consuelo a hug. The old lady is close to
bawling now.

LENA
Lola, tama na ho. Hindi pa naman
ho ako aalis.

DONA CONSUELO
Sana nga Lena. Sana huwag ka nang
umalis, gusto ko maging komportable
ang buhay mo. Siguradong matutuwa
si Ignacio, pati na rin si Enzo
pag permanente ka na dito sa amin...

LENA
Si lolo siguro. Ewan ko lang ho kay
Lorenzo...

DONA CONSUELO
Alam mo ganyan lang iyan si Enzo,
pero alam kong natutuwa iyon sa iyo!

LENA
Talaga ho? Hindi ko ho maramdaman.
Palagi niya kasi akong inaasar eh.

DONA CONSUELO
Ganoon lang talaga iyon.

LENA
Ay Lola, kaya ho pala ako nandito
kasi sabi ni Lolo, kumuha daw ako
ng aklat na gawa ni Constancio Madrid.

DONA CONSUELO
Ay hindi mo makikita yan diyan.
Dito yan sa drawer niya. Dito niya
itinatago ang mga espesyal niyang
mga libro. Teka, mas may naisip
akong ipapabasa sa iyo. Di hamak
na mas maganda itong basahin kesa
sa kay Madrid.

Dona Consuelo drags Lena towards the main study table. She
opened the topmost drawer with a special key she fished out
of a miniature fishbowl display on the table top. She opened
it revealing at least 10 books, penned by several authors.

She picked out a rather old, almost tattered book.
The look of it is that of something that has been used and
flipped over several times. On the front page of it is the
name "NUESTRA PERDIDO EDEN."

LENA
Lola, kanino ho ang mga librong iyan?

DONA CONSUELO
Yan ang koleksiyon ng Lolo mo. Yan
ang mga pinakatangi-tangi niyang
mga libro. Ito ang pinakapaborito
niya.

LENA
Talaga po?

DONA CONSUELO
Oo, kasi ang ama niya ang sumulat
niyan.

LENA
Jose Alejandrino Alvarez? Manunulat
pala ang ama ni Daddy Iggy.

DONA CONSUELO
Oo Lena, noong mga panahon ng mga
Amerikano, bago ang pangalawang
digmaang daigdig, si Jose Alvarez
ay isa sa mga tanyag na manunulat
ng bansa!

LENA
Talaga po Lola? Naku po, sige
babasahin ko po ito.

DONA CONSUELO
Sabihin mo sa kanya na iyan ang
pinabasa ko sa iyo, kasi diyan mo
malalaman ang halaga ng isang
pamilya. At paano ang bawat
miyembro nito ay mahalaga sa
kaunlaran ng bansa. Perfect sa iyo
ang librong iyan.

LENA
Lola, sabi ni Lolo hindi daw kayo
mahilig sa libro.

DONA CONSUELO
Maniwala ka naman sa Lolo mo.
Gusto niya lang isipin na siya ang
expert sa literatura, hindi niya
alam na napag-aralan na namin iyang
librong yan nung ako’y bata pa.

LENA
Ganon ho ba, Lola?

DONA CONSUELO
Sige na anak, humayo ka na, ingatan
mo nga lang iyang librong iyan.
Antigo na kasi iyan.

LENA
Salamat ho dito. Sige po. Sigurado
akong mag-eenjoy ako dito.

INT. MANSION - TV ROOM - ALMOST MIDNIGHT

Enzo, Paco, Janna, Liz, Lena and Tinay are watching a movie
on the wide screen TV. It was an old horror film - Patayin
sa Sindak si Barbara.

Janna and Liz are with their boyfriends
on the couches. Both of which are obviously too afraid to
watch the scary scenes. Tinay is pretty much the same. Most
of the time she pinches Lena if a scary scene comes up.

LENA
Kanino bang idea tong manood tayo
ng horror?

JANNA
E di kanino pa, kundi dito sa mga
ungak na to.

ENZO
Guys, it’s not that scary.

PACO
Oo nga, hindi naman nakakatakot. Pakipasa
nga ng popcorn.

ENZO
Shhh....nanunuod ang tao, eh.

TINAY
Naku, mag-isa lang ako matutulog
mamaya...

LIZ
Ay nako, Tinay. Imagination mo lang
yan.

PACO
Eto namang isang ito
(referring to Liz)
Nagtatapang-tapangan pero ito o,
nagtatakip din ng mukha pag
kakatakutan na.

LENA
Buti nga sa iyo yan lang, itong
kasama ko nangungurot pag
nakakatakot na. Pasa-pasa ako nito
sigurado pagkatapos.

ENZO
Hindi ka ba natatakot Lena?

LENA
Hindi...likhang isip lamang ang takot.

PACO
Talaga? Hindi ka man lang natakot
ni minsang beses.

LENA
Sa multo hindi. Sa buhay, takot ako.

JANNA
Really?

TINAY
Naku, ayan na si Ruth! Eeeeek!!!

JANNA
Naykupo!!!

LIZ
Paco...yakapin mo ko! Takot ako!
Eeeeee!!!

PACO
Bro, I tell you...I’m starting to
like this movie.

Their joyful mood ensued.

INT. LENA’S BEDROOM - PAST MIDNIGHT
Coming off the movie, Lena started to dress for sleep. She
went out of the room to brush her teeth in the adjacent
washroom.

When she returned to her room something is amiss. Something
is wrong. The window shutters are now open, making creaky
sounds each time the wind passes by. Lena quickly rushes to
close them.

Then, the big wooden closet doors started to creak too. It
started to open then close. There is something inside it.
Fear started to creep now into Lena. She is starting to get
goosebumps from the breeze from the other window.

All of a sudden, her lights went off. It was a full moon
outside and a little bit of light is still visible. Lena
mustered the courage to move towards the closet to fully
close it.

From the door came a white, floating figure. It held a
candle, and seemed to be dragging a chain behind it. It
moved closer to Lena.

LENA
Kuya, ikaw ba yan kuya? Huwag mo
naman akong takutin!!!

The figure moved even closer... Lena was so shocked, she
could not move from where she was standing! As the hooded
figure lifted it’s cloak to reveal it’s face, Lena let out an
ear-deafening scream!

LENA
Eeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
Muuuuullllttooooooo!!!!

Suddenly the lights . The hooded figured hugged
her and shook her out of her fear.

ENZO
Lena, Lena, ako to! Si Enzo!!!

Paco came out of the closet in fits of laughter.

PACO
Kuya....kuya...huwag po....riot ka,
Lena!!! Kala ko ba di ka takot sa
multo?!!

Lena, suddenly realized that she has been punked.

LENA
Gago ka! Gago ka!!!Eto sa iyo!

She started to pounce on Enzo, who is almost in tears from laughing.

ENZO
Sandali, Lena let me explain....Ha
ha ha...

Feeling hopeless, she turned to Paco.

LENA
Ikaw din, eto sa iyo, demonyo ka!
Peste kayo!!!

The two still could not stop themselves from laughing. Lena
never felt so hopelessly clueless in her life.

She started to cry.

LENA (CONTINUOUSLY)

Umalis na kayo dito! Alis! Alis!

ENZO
You’re such a liar Lena...Kala mo
kung sino tong matapang...ha ha ha...

LENA
Salbahe ka! Makikita mo. May araw
ka din sa akin.

ENZO
Alalahanin mo Lena, I don’t back
down on any challenges. Alam kong
ikaw naglagay ng palaka. Isa lang
masasabi ko, kung ano ang itinanim
siya rin ang aanihin. Ang sakit ng
tiyan ko...sandali...he he he.

LENA
Alis na nga kayo sabi!!!

She was pushing the two boys out of her room. The two boys
are still relentlessly laughing like drunk hyenas.

PACO
Goodnight, Lena.

ENZO
Sweetdreams, Lena. Check under your
bed, baka may mumo diyan.

When she managed to get the two boys out, she slammed the
door and slumped on her bed to cry. Not because she was
afraid, but mainly because she was exposed for who she
really was. A little girl still afraid of ghosts --- ghosts
of her past and ghosts of her imminent future...and like any
other girl, she needed that somebody to chase them all away.
